FOREWORD
Welcome to the Townsville City Galleries Exhibition Calendar for July 2024 to February 2025.
We are proud to showcase a diverse range of high-quality exhibitions which celebrate the best of local, national, and international artists.
Our exhibitions feature worldrenowned artists and exciting competitions such as The Percivals and the North Queensland Ceramic Awards. These competitions celebrate the best of Australian artists in portraiture and ceramics, respectively. We are excited to showcase these exhibitions as they are a testament to the exceptional talent that our city, region, and country have to offer.
The arts are an integral part of the unique cultural landscape of Townsville, and we are committed to promoting the growth of the arts, cultural events, and recreational activities in our city.
During the end-of-year school holidays (December 2024 and January 2025), we are also proud to present a new exhibition, Yucky Yum Yum, where little kids and big kids alike can spend a day enjoying art and activities at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville's CBD.
Our exhibitions and public programs offer something for everyone, from contemporary art to more traditional works, and we hope you enjoy what we have in store.
We invite you to visit the Galleries website and the Townsville City Council’s What’s On website to find out more about the public programs and workshops on offer at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and Pinnacles Gallery at the Riverway Precinct.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Townsville City Galleries.

THE PERCIVALS
UNTIL 1 SEPTEMBER 2024
PERC TUCKER REGIONAL GALLERY
Townsville City Galleries is proud to present the 2024 Percivals Portrait Prize exhibition. This biennial competition is Northern Australia's premier portrait prize. This year, The Percivals features 86 exceptional artworks across three categories in painting, photography, and the depiction of animals.
The Percivals celebrates contemporary approaches to the centuries-old genre of portraiture. It showcases diverse subjects, bodies and settings. Some of the sitters are known intimately to the artists, some are self portraits, while others may be recognised as more public figures.
Beginning in 2007, The Percivals has since been showcasing the best artists from the region, the state of Queensland, and across Australia.

SEVEN + SEVEN: PRINTMAKING ACROSS UNKNOWN TERRAIN
12 JULY – 15 SEPTEMBER 2024
PINNACLES GALLERY
Seven + Seven: Printmaking Across Unknown Terrain explores visual dialogues and contemporary ideas among 14 artists from Canada and Australia. The resulting exhibition invites audiences to regard not only the vast distances across both these nations' geographical and psychological landscapes, but to also consider how relative perspectives in these two hemispheres examine similar themes of colonialism, extreme weather, and human impacts on nature (and ourselves).
Through hybrid applications of printmaking and the international diversity explored in the exhibition, we might find that two different cultures have more in common than we think.
Featuring artists:
Australian Rebecca Beardmore, G.W. Bot, Tamika Grant-Iramu, Barbie Kjar, Wendy Murray, Janet Parker-Smith and Judy Watson
Canadian Derek Besant, Sean Caulfield, John Dean, Liz Ingram & Bernd Hildebrandt, Alexandra Haeseker, Walter Jule and Jewel Shaw

TRANSITIONS
14 SEPTEMBER – 13 OCTOBER 2024
PERC TUCKER REGIONAL GALLERY
Transitions is a partnership between Townsville City Galleries and Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts, that combines mentorship, critiques and development for emerging visual artist mentees. Now in its fourth iteration, mentees have worked one-on-one with established North Queensland artists to develop their arts practices, gain valuable insights into working professionally and to begin to forge a career in the arts. Mentees self-define their goals and receive support and feedback from their mentors, gallery professionals, guest mentors and their program peers.
To celebrate Transitions and its outcomes, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is pleased to present an end of program exhibition displaying artworks created by the mentees.
The exhibiting artists are Hannah Aiello, Sabrina Toby, Vicki Katthagen, Sarah Treadwell and Lisa Gianni. The work they have developed spans portraiture, breastplates, photography and sculpture.

YUCKY YUM YUM
29 NOVEMBER 2024 – 9 MARCH 2025
PERC TUCKER REGIONAL GALLERY
Do you find joy eating food in fake rainbow colours, even though it might be bad for you? Do you like watching videos of objects being squished, or even people popping pimples?
Even if you answered ‘no’ to all the above, you would know that some things can be both delicious and disgusting at the same time. Or they can be funny and sad. Sometimes we actually desire things because they are scary or dangerous.
The artists in this exhibition have made works that you might find both yucky and yum. Hopefully, the art sparks your senses. It may ignite your emotions and memories too.
Many of the works in this exhibition are connected by themes around food, nature and the ‘unnatural’, disgust and taboo. These themes have complex and challenging histories, presents and futures. The artists don’t shy away from tough subjects, but their works are also filled with fun and irreverence.
Yucky Yum Yum will be packed with new, artist-designed activities to keep you entertained and engaged over the long summer months. Just don’t eat ice-cream off the pavement.
Featuring: Ebony Russell, Elizabeth Willing, Hotham Street Ladies, Jan Hynes, Kenny Pittock, Lisa Ashcroft, Smac McCreanor and more.

6 DECEMBER 2024 – 23 FEBRUARY 2025
PINNACLES GALLERY
Showcasing six moving image artworks by Australian artists, this exhibition celebrates ACMI’s vibrant collecting and commissioning program.
Working in video offers artists the opportunity to use editing as their primary technique; mixing and matching elements from other films or their own work to tell new stories. By remixing or rearranging footage they build different rhythms and moods, create hilarious juxtapositions or shed new light on cultural cliches and presumed histories. The works in this exhibition all demonstrate an irrepressible desire to bring deep themes to the surface with humour and an incredible attention to detail.
An ACMI touring exhibition.
