MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR CR JENNY HILL The North Australian Festival of Arts is back! Bigger, better and even more outrageous than before. With over 400 events locked in across a number of genres and locations around our city, Townsville City Council is once again proud to present the wonders of NAFA throughout the month of July. As a Council we made a commitment to the people of Townsville to create an annual arts and culture festival our community could be proud of. Three years on from the inaugural North Australian Festival of Arts, I am pleased to see our community’s appetite grow as it continues to back NAFA and the world-class experiences showcased throughout our region.
NORTH AUSTRALIAN FESTIVAL OF ARTS
From world-class headliners to undiscovered talent from right in our own backyard, NAFA provides our community more than a month of entertainment, it brings our city to life and highlights why we choose to live in Townsville, the capital of Northern Australia.
4
The challenges of the past 12 months have taught us as a city to become more adaptive than ever, watch in awe as Townsville is transformed into an arts and culture mecca through the wonders of the Northern Fringe Festival - setting our pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes abuzz with activity and joy. The North Queensland winter is the perfect summer, Townsville is the place to be and NAFA certainly has plenty to see. So join us as we get out and about to enjoy the North Australian Festival of Arts in all its glory in a COVID-safe manner in 2021.
MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR TOURISM INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION AND MINISTER FOR SPORT THE HON. STIRLING HINCHLIFFE MP Welcome to the North Australian Festival of Arts, a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Townsville, North Queensland’s local culture and community, and hopefully explore some of the superb tourism experiences on offer here. The impacts of the pandemic have provided incredible challenges, but thanks to the hard work of Queenslanders our state was one of the first to put in place a COVID Safe Event Framework which paved the way for events such as this one to take place. The Queensland Government is proud to support the North Australian Festival of Arts, through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program and it is a feature on our It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. Events are an important part of our state’s economic recovery from the pandemic because they attract visitors to the region which stimulates the local economy and supports local jobs. Events are also an important opportunity for communities, friends, families and visitors to come together, creating community pride and reconnecting us. Congratulations to the event organisers and all those involved in organising this event – may it be a successful one. If you are visiting for the event, I encourage you to make some time to explore the diverse tourism experiences on offer in this beautiful region. The Hon. Stirling Hinchliffe MP, Minister for Tourism Industry Development and Innovation and Minister for Sport.

Huddle up and place your bets on this brand-new show by Mel Buttle. This is a show for anyone who’s ever played sport, gone to the gym, and still woken up as a size 14. Mel has had a go at playing softball, touch footy, hockey and AFL, all at intermediate levels but rest assured her comedy is grand final worthy. Sit on the sidelines and soak in one of comedy’s top players. Full credit to Mel who’s torn up the blindside of comedy appearing on The Great Australian Bake Off, Hughesy We Have A Problem, Patriot Brains and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!.

By a Thread was created to bring a new dimension to these ‘acrobatic’ relationships, and the parallels they draw to our everyday interactions. Virtuosic acrobatics and intricate choreography weave through moments of confusion, hilarity, romance, playfulness, fear and friendship. The relationships between ensemble members on stage mimic the everyday relationships we have as human beings. The acrobatic ensemble is the vehicle through which ideas of risk and trust are explored, creating an intimate experience around the dangers and joys implicit in engaging with others.

MEL O’CALLAGHAN, CENTRE OF THE CENTRE 10 - 29 JULY
NAFA
Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts & Flinders Lane Centre of the Centre is a major new commission by Australian-born, Paris-based contemporary artist Mel O’Callaghan that traces the origins of life and its regenerative forces, iterated through video, performance and sculpture. Centre of the Centre plunges audiences 4km below the surface in the Pacific Ocean to encounter fascinating lifeforms in extreme environments, pushes the material boundaries of glass, and reveals how breath can create both calm and excitement through the depth and rapidity of inhalation and exhalation. Mel O’Callaghan’s Centre of the Centre was curated and developed by Artspace and is touring nationally with Museums & Galleries of NSW. Centre of the Centre is co-commissioned by Le Confort Moderne, Poitiers; Artspace, Sydney; and The University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane. With Commissioning Partners Andrew Cameron AM & Cathy Cameron and Peter Wilson & James Emmett; and Lead Supporter, Kronenberg Mais Wright. The development and presentation of Centre of the Centre is supported by the Fondation des Artistes; Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the US National Science Foundation. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
