WELCOME TO NAFA Welcome to something very special… The North Australian Festival of Arts, NAFA is the culmination and celebration of the artistic and cultural life of northern Australia held over the month of July in Townsville, Australia’s largest tropical city, where Townsville’s winter is the perfect summer. North Australia is a unique and beautiful place. It is home to some of the most stunning and naturally significant places on our continent. But northern Australia is also an artistic and cultural melting pot of creativity – of artists and artisans, makers of music, dance, visual arts, spoken and written words, and of 40 000 years of stories, songs, music and dance of the traditional custodians of this place. NAFA will present a menu of shows, events, exhibitions and performance unlike anywhere in northern Australia. This month long arts and cultural festival follows the successful Commonwealth Games Festival 2018 and features the acclaimed Australian Festival of Chamber Music and the renowned biennial waterfront ephemeral art exhibition - Strand Ephemera. NAFA will present national and international acts complimented by the month long curated arts and cultural program of music, dance, theatre, comedy, exhibitions, Spiegeltent shows, illuminations, Townsville’s Festival of Stories and much more. The Northern Fringe Festival will also be in full swing throughout Townsville as part of NAFA. Featuring live acts, music, comedy, cabaret, freaks and funk the Northern Fringe – in the spirit of Fringe Festivals across the globe – will be an inclusive and organic festival hosted in theatres, cafés, pop-up venues, laneways and street corners right across Townsville. Art and performance of any and all forms can play in what will become over time a respected festival on the national Fringe landscape. NAFA truly has something for everyone. Enjoy. From the Festival Team
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR The community response to Festival 2018, as part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games was incredible. People from across the city and the nation turned up in huge numbers to celebrate and experience what was truly a milestone event for Townsville. Last year, we took serious note of how our community has a real appetite for an inclusive, all-encompassing event we can be proud of. This is why Council committed to prioritising the vital role of arts, culture and annual events with the creation of the North Australian Festival of Arts and the Northern Fringe Festival. NAFA will be unlike anything our city has seen before. Establishing NAFA will serve as a welcome reminder to locals why we choose to make Townsville our home, and demonstrate to visitors that we truly are the events Capital of the North. The celebrations for Festival 2018 certainly set a high standard, but this year NAFA 2019 promises even more. Our local artists will be sharing the spotlight with a lineup of national and international entertainers; with the likes of San Cisco, Joe Camilleri and the Black Sorrows, Tom Gleeson, Akmal and Bernie Dieter’s Little Death Club just the tip of the iceberg. Townsville’s very first accompanying Northern Fringe Festival will turn our parks, pubs, retail precincts and open spaces into live performance venues, providing a stage for comics, musicians and artists of all forms to dazzle and excite. The benefits of NAFA goes beyond the joys of being entertained; it will bring our city to life with music, colour and dance. This is a guide to NAFA, to make sure that you, your family and your friends can make the most out of our month-long festival and all it beholds. NAFA is set to light your imagination on fire. The biggest problem is going to be figuring out how you’re going to fit everything in throughout this jammed-packed July! NAFA is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR THE ARTS
MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL PARTNER
The Queensland Government is delighted to support the North Australian Festival of Arts (NAFA), an exciting new arts and cultural celebration for our state. One year ago, Festival 2018 showcased Queensland’s arts and culture to the world, as part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and it has left a lasting legacy for our arts and cultural sector. Through NAFA, Townsville is capitalising on that momentum. There is an amazing depth of creative talent in this region and NAFA is a fantastic opportunity for regional Queensland to experience world-class arts and cultural experiences in their own community. NAFA will not only foster growth in our arts sector and nurture local talent, it will also offer significant tourism, economic and employment benefits, building on the success of two of North Queensland’s signature arts and cultural events – the long-running Australian Festival of Chamber Music and the Strand Ephemera – acclaimed festivals activating the city during the winter months. There is also a rich culture in North Queensland and NAFA will capture this too, with contributions from First Nations’ artists from across the north. Including the premiere of Legacy: Reflections on Mabo exhibition, bringing together 26 Indigenous and nonIndigenous artists in celebration of the life and cultural legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo. Townsville has shown its strength and resilience after the devastating flood at the start of the year and I congratulate the city for bringing this festival together during such a challenging period, demonstrating the strength of the community to not just recover but to forge ahead stronger than ever. Enjoy exploring this fabulous program, and the many arts and cultural delights of North Queensland. Leeanne Enoch MP Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts
Cultural and artistic endeavours make our community a richer and more vibrant place. Associated activities bring people together to share in creativity and storytelling in its many shapes and forms. The North Australian Festival of Arts is an important community event that provides a platform for North Queensland’s artists, performers and writers to shine, while also attracting national and global talent to our region. That is why CQUniversity is proud to be a partner of this year’s event. The NAFA program will allow the people of North Queensland to enjoy a diverse array of talent from dance and comedy to music and a multitude of exhibitions. Importantly, this event will allow us to showcase the Townsville region as a world class destination for tourism and events. As well as supporting NAFA, CQUniversity is also getting behind creativity in our region by delivering courses in the creative arts space. Courses include creative and performing arts, music and digital media. Our students and academics get involved with community arts projects and we also conduct research into regional arts, creativity and culture. We are extremely proud to support emerging creative talent in our region and we hope that this can build strong future foundation for the creative industries in North Queensland. I hope you all enjoy the activities on offer as part of NAFA and that you continue to support arts and culture in our region. Kari Arbouin Associate Vice-Chancellor, Townsville and North West Queensland Region CQUniversity Australia

A touring exhibition of works by Robert MacPherson explores language, related systems that seek to categorise knowledge, and how changes to both can affect the gradual disappearance of specialist knowledge as generations pass. The immense ambition and scope of this project represents 20 years of thought and deliberation by the artist and reflects Australia’s diversity, history and complexity. Robert MacPherson: Boss Drovers is a touring exhibition developed by the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art.
LEGACY: REFLECTIONS ON MABO FROM 5 JULY | UMBRELLA STUDIO CONTEMPORARY ARTS
National premiere and opening night: 6pm, Friday 5 July at Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts. Reflections on Mabo celebrates the man behind the game-changing Native Title Act, Eddie Koiki Mabo, and the ongoing influence and impact he has had on Australian society and culture. This travelling exhibition brings together 26 Indigenous and nonIndigenous artists in the spirit of reconciliation, 27 years after this historic achievement. Each artist has responded to an aspect of Mabo they were drawn to, whether it was his life, politics, activism or legacy. The artworks come together in surprising ways, with reverence, compassion, anger, sadness and respect, celebrating a man who was both a rebel and a dreamer. Umbrella Studio is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.
