Life and Laughs – a HEB: A Retrospective Until Sunday 21 August pinnacles gallery Proudly presented by Pinnacles Gallery in partnership with the Townsville Bulletin, Life and Laughs is a major retrospective of the works of acclaimed political cartoonist Robert ‘HEB’ Hebden. A Townsville local, HEB created over 4,000 cartoons during his lifetime, many of which were published in the Townsville Advertiser and the Townsville Sun for a period spanning four decades. HEB’s cartoons regularly delighted readers (and occasionally sparked controversy), as he turned his undoubted talent as a draughtsman and acerbic humor to local and national issues and events, identities and sporting teams. This exhibition is made possible thanks to the generosity of HEB’s family who have kindly loaned his original illustrations. Magnetic Island

a

Past, Present and Future Tuesday 27 September, 7pm –8pm citylibraries thuringowa central Nestled between Capes Cleveland and Pallarenda, Magnetic Island has been a beacon toward which Townsville has orientated itself. For the traditional owners its origins were embedded in creation stories. They found a harvest and identity in its bays and hills. After settlement, it became a quarantine station, picnic ground, and fruit basket. Its bays teemed with jetties and yachts escorting locals to hotels and camping grounds. Magnetic Island’s beauty and importance for recreation have been much celebrated. This lecture explores that history while examining how development has caused concern about how to balance the Island’s beauty and recreation.

Glencore Children’s a Exhibition: Metamorphosis The Art of Tom Moore Until Sunday 23 October perc tucker regional gallery Metamorphosis is the 2016 Glencore Children’s Exhibition, and focuses on the stunning hybrid life-forms of leading Australian glass artist, Tom Moore. Moore’s menagerie of characters combine botanical, zoological, and mechanical elements. Drawing inspiration from “the sharp observational wit of literary absurdists such as Edward Lear and…Dr Seuss”1 (Slade, 2016), the works are simultaneously humorous and insightful, giving us great joy, while also providing pause for thought about the human impact on the natural world. A warrior on the fields of war, felled by the sharpness of whispered words, Othello is a man swept up in desire, quickly turned to murderous rage when he is betrayed by his military brotherin-arms, the cynically destructive Iago.
