loc al writer
Pheobe Evans “Her eyes are startling. They are always changing; one day a placid sea green, the next a stormy grey. Like the ocean tides, always changing, never stopping.” Phoebe Evans is the winner in the young adult category for the 2016 CityLibraries Townsville Short Story Competition, sponsored by the Queensland Writers Centre and Townsville Writers and Publishers Centre. Phoebe wrote Bleached, the story of a young woman’s life long relationship with a fish. Phoebe has been an avid reader from a young age. Her early years were spent on a small rural property outside the hamlet of Hoskinstown NSW, 30 kilometres east of Canberra. As a 5 year old she amused herself writing and illustrating her own short books on folded and stapled A4 pages. In 2012 at age 8, Phoebe's family relocated 2,000 kilometres north to Townsville. While she missed her friends back south she adapted well to her new environment and quickly settled in at Belgian Gardens State School. In her first term at the school she won a Principal’s Special Award for some prose she wrote about the country life she left behind in NSW. BGSS continued building her passion for reading, writing and music. Her growing skill on clarinet was rewarded with a place in Pimlico High Junior Symphony while in her final year at primary school. She started her first high school year in 2016 at Townsville Grammar which she is enjoying very much. An insatiable reader, she invariably has a pile of 10 or more books on her bedside table with several on the go at once. Recently she has become a fan of feature articles in The Australian's weekend magazine. You can read Phoebe’s short story and other winning stories on the Townsville City Council website: www.townsville.qld.gov.au/facilitiesand-recreation/libraries/programs-andactivities/short-story-competition-2016
