The city is the central access point to these diverse landscapes however it is tropical Magnetic Island that is the Region’s most renowned natural asset. The Townsville North Queensland Region extends north to the captivating Hinchinbrook district, east including the Palm Island Group and Orpheus Island, south to the thriving Burdekin and west to historic Charters Towers. The Northern Life

The spectacular North Queensland weather from April to September makes this time of year the most popular time to visit. Travellers will revel in the Region’s huge line up of entertainment and events with sports, food, cultural and music festivals in full swing. The blockbuster event line up is an indicator of the Region’s development, however it has not lost its laidback, vibrant lifestyle. Shorts and T-shirts are the adopted local apparel as North Queensland’s 240,000 residents enjoy 300 days of sunshine each year.

Townsville City

The city is home to approximately 200,000 of the Region’s overall population and is an essential services hub for northern Australia. Positioned in the centre of its regional counterparts, Townsville offers the perfect home base to explore the wonders of our reef, islands and beaches, the former golden days of the west and the mysteries surrounding our acclaimed wetlands and rainforests. The diversity of closely positioned destinations, signature events and hallmark attractions makes filling your Townsville itinerary an easy one. 4

The Strand

The Strand is the perfect place to unwind during your Townsville escape. The popular foreshore stretches 2.5km and offers views across Cleveland Bay to Magnetic Island. The Strand is a favourite with locals and visitors, offering wide boulevard style walkways, swimming enclosures, freshwater showers, playgrounds, waterfront dining and BBQ facilities. The Rock Pool draws its water supply from the ocean, while the state-of-the-art water park is a must for the kids. The most amazing views are on offer in the early morning when the sunrise glistens across the water.

Castle Hill

A centre point of the city, the pink granite monolith of Castle Hill provides a stunning backdrop to the CBD and The Strand. This giant red rock stands at 286m – just short of a mountain – and is easily accessible by the 2.9km road to the summit. Castle Hill has several challenging walking tracks for early morning and late afternoon exercisers. Follow the 1,000 plus locals per day and conquer the revered goat track. Stunning views and gentle breezes will ensure your efforts are well rewarded.

Riverway

Spread along the banks of the Ross River, the Riverway precinct mixes modern facilities with the great outdoors, offering two huge swimming lagoons, playgrounds, parklands and BBQ facilities for family occasions. Regular cultural performances are held at the Riverway Arts Centre, while significant sporting and cultural events take place in the precinct’s stadium.

Get a feel for the city heart by walking to the intriguing attractions nestled in the inner city. Reef HQ Aquarium is the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium and is your opportunity to visit the reef without getting your feet wet. The Aquarium boasts a range of exhibits, talks and tours along with a dedicated Turtle Hospital where visitors can see live turtles in rehabilitation (provided there are patients). Just next door discover the natural and cultural heritage of North Queensland at the Museum of Tropical Queensland, suitable for visitors of all ages. Learn about HMS Pandora, the ship sent by British Admiralty to capture the Bounty and her mutinous crew or test your skills at the interactive science centre, Mindzone. The Townsville Cultural Centre offers an authentic Indigenous experience. The Centre showcases regional artists with performances of dance, music, storytelling and an interpretive gallery providing insight into the Indigenous people of the north. On the outskirts of the city, Billabong Sanctuary is an interactive wildlife park set in 11 hectares of wilderness. Hold a koala, cuddle a wombat, smile at a crocodile or wrap a python around your neck. Animal talks and feedings occur throughout the day – don’t forget your camera! Riverway

Shop ‘til You Drop

Townsville boasts four major shopping precincts – the Central Business District, Castletown, Stockland and the Willows – offering shoppers a wide range of stores. Local fashion boutiques are located in and around the CBD and in the larger centres for those looking for some authentic North Queensland threads. Townsville is also home to retail giant Myer at Stockland, perfect for those looking for the latest fashions. Markets are regularly held throughout the Region, with fresh produce, homemade sweets, plants, flowers and crafts available. Please check the Events Calendar for dates.

The Townsville Civic Theatre, home to the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, is North Queensland’s premier cultural facility. Time Lapse

In addition to the Museum of Tropical Queensland, there are many other museums well worth visiting, including the National Trust Heritage Centre, which showcases three typical North Queensland houses from as early as 1884, displaying furnishings and items made locally. The Maritime Museum has a collection of historical items and is a good place to learn the complete history of the S.S. Yongala. The Townsville Royal Air Force Museum and the Army Museum of North Queensland display the aviation and military history of North Queensland from WWII to the present, while the Townsville Museum portrays the city’s history. 6

Townsville 400 V8 Supercars

Rev it Up

North Queensland, start your engines… GO! Townsville will again throw open its doors to thousands of visitors in July with the race that stops a Region. The glitz and glamour of the racing car scene, including star drivers such as James Courtney, Mark Winterbottom and Jamie Whincup, will converge on the city as part of the V8 Supercars Townsville 400. In what is truly a ‘rev-heads heaven’ the Offshore Superboat Championships will also grace The Strand in the lead up to the main event. For horsepower of a different kind, head to Home Hill for the annual Burdekin Grower Race Day in May. This event attracts crowds of up to 5,000 people. This is, however, a Race Day with a fruity twist. Punters never go home empty handed with the Region’s farmers providing fruit and vegetable give-aways. The racing season continues in Townsville with several big meetings at the Cluden Turf Club over the glorious winter months. The Townsville Cup draws 10,000 punters each year and is one of the highlights of the North Queensland social calendar.

Rock it Out

If rocking to world renowned artists is more your style, then the Groovin’ the Moo in Townsville is a must. This event, held in early May each year, is a favourite of young music fans, attracting crowds of up to 15,000. Townsville and the North Queensland Region also play host to internationally acclaimed musicians during the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in July and August. Now in its 23rd year, the Festival is a happy meeting place for locals and visitors alike, who enjoy the opportunity to hear and meet musicians in a wonderfully inviting tropical winter setting. Magnetic Island plays host to Australia’s only Full Moon Downunder Party at Base Backpackers. The event, attracting world famous DJs, draws thousands of people each month who party on until sunrise on the beaches of Nelly Bay.

Roar Your Support

While in Townsville lend your support to our national sporting teams. North Queensland is represented in three national leagues. The North Queensland Cowboys compete in the National Rugby League, the Townsville Crocodiles take to the court in the National

Basketball League, while the Townsville Fire does battle in the Women’s National Basketball League. If you enjoy a little bit of western culture, then the Troy Dunn PBR Invitational Bull Ride is for you. Watch the world’s best cowboys take on 1,000kg plus beasts when the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre is transformed into a rodeo arena. If you prefer to compete then head to Charters Towers on the Australia Day weekend each year for the famous Gold Field Ashes Cricket Carnival. Be prepared to wear an embarrassing outfit or dress if you drop a catch to emphasise the social aspect of this famous cricket carnival.

Remember the Past

Ingham is home to a rich Italian history. The annual Australian-Italian Festival pays homage to the role of Italian migrants in the town’s development. The town comes alive with a distinct Italian flavour at the start of August, culminating in a weekend street party complete with spaghetti eating competitions. For more information on the fantastic events around North Queensland, please see the Townsville Shines Events Guide or visit www.townsvilleshines.com.au.

Walk the North (Heritage Walking Trails)

Townsville’s Heritage Walking Trails are a must do for guests wanting to know the full story of the city and its past. The walks are filled with interpretive information and hundreds of photo opportunities to help you discover the real Townsville. Guide yourself around the city by collecting a brochure at the Flinders Square Visitor Information Centre, The Knowledge Centre – City Library or the front counter of the Townsville City Council. Simply head off on foot following instructions, building markers and interpretive signage. Townsville CBD

Trail 1 - Civic Pride

Retrace the growth of Townsville’s CBD, particularly the westward movement, with the expansion of insurance, commercial and banking institutions. Marvel at the grand qualities of the buildings and how they contributed to Townsville’s emergence as the north’s administrative centre. Allow half an hour for a brisk walk or longer for a leisurely stroll.

Trail 2 - Early Townsville

Trace the 1880’s transformation of the original ‘heart of the city’ and port related Flinders Street East. The evolution of single storey timber structures to one and two-storey masonry buildings reflects the development of the city’s character in the fabric and function of these buildings. Visit Reef HQ Aquarium, Cultural Centre and the Museum of Tropical Queensland along the way. Allow half an hour for a brisk walk or longer for a leisurely stroll. 12

townsvilleholidays.info

Trail 3 - South Townsville and Port

South Townsville was a hub for industry with many male residents in the suburb employed at the Port and in associated industries. Reminisce about the early social make-up of the suburb through the architecture and get a snapshot of the daily social interaction between wharfies, seamen, meatworkers and railway workers at one of the many historic pubs in the area.

Bruce Muller

One of Townsville’s many historic buildings

Little did you know... The first European contact in the area occurred in 1819 when Allan Cunningham, aboard the survey vessel Mermaid, landed at Cape Cleveland. A further 45 years elapsed before John Melton Black and Robert Towns, after whom the city was named, founded Townsville in November 1864. Originally, Townsville was a slowly developing seaport serving pastoralists in the hinterland. The discovery of gold in North Queensland in 1867 saw the city develop rapidly and by 1880 it was the port for five major goldfields and the main supply centre of Northern Australia. Later it became the centre for rich sugar growing districts to the north and south. Today, Townsville is a flourishing modern city and the administrative centre of North Queensland, but still preserves a rich heritage from its golden past.

Magnetic Island Maggie – as it is affectionately known to the locals – is North Queensland’s most renowned and visited tourist attraction. Located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, just 8km off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is a perfect escape. With 23 beaches and bays, Magnetic Island has the natural beauty and serenity of an untouched paradise, all the luxuries of today’s modern cities and a thriving community. Snorkel fringing reefs around Magnetic Island

Sunset on beautiful Magnetic Island

Skip Across The Bay

Magnetic Island is a carefree 20 minute SeaLink Queensland ferry ride from Townsville and once you’ve docked it’s straight into Island life. If you haven’t brought your own vehicle over on the Fantasea Cruising Magnetic barge, the public bus service makes tripping around the Island a breeze or you can always hire a bicycle, scooter, colourful topless car or baby four wheel drive. Other options for the fitness conscious traveller include exploring the wilderness via walking tracks or bike riding from bay to bay.

Green Scene

The Island is two-thirds protected national park and is home to some amazing adventures that are guaranteed to make you wish you’d stayed longer. Magnetic Island has 25km of walking tracks guiding visitors from bay to bay through thick bushlands of dry wattles and eucalypts and pockets of rainforest. The Island’s national park is also home to a large colony of koalas and abundant wildlife. These bush walks allow native animals to be viewed up close in their natural habitats. 20

townsvilleholidays.info

Koala Central (Forts Walk)

See the Island on horseback

The Forts Walk is home to Northern Australia’s largest colony of koalas. The approximately 90 minute return walk is the most opportune place on the Island to see koalas in the wild. You’ll increase your chance of seeing them in the early morning or late evening, so be prepared with water and sun protection. Along the way you will also come across fascinating WWII history. A reminder as to how close Australia came to being invaded in WWII is evidenced by The Forts gun emplacements which are still intact. Survey the sweeping 360 degree views of the coast and Coral Sea just as our protectors would have all those years ago.

From scenic flights over the Island to challenging your mates to a game of golf, Maggie is the ideal holiday spot to do as much (or as little) as possible.

Sneak a Peak

Find Out What Swims Below

Birding enthusiasts will enjoy searching for kookaburras, sulphur-crested cockatoos, red-tailed black cockatoos, brahminy kites and of course the Island’s iconic bird, the bush stone-curlew.

Tropical Adventures

The Island is the perfect launch pad for reef based activities. Reef trips, diving charters, sea kayaking and fishing charters are all available. The Island is also well equipped for other water activities, including sailing and jet-skiing, with a majority of activities happening at Horseshoe Bay. Swimming is a must on Magnetic Island with 23 beaches and calm tropical waters sheltered within the protected bays. Be mindful of stingers in the summer months from November to May. Swimming enclosures are located at Horseshoe, Picnic and Alma Bays. While Florence, Radical and Arthur Bays are somewhat off the beaten track, these secluded areas allow keen snorkellers an opportunity to walk off the beach and discover the fringing reefs.

If you’re a keen fisherman or would just like to try your luck, there are plenty of great spots to cast your line including the historic Picnic Bay jetty. Exotic tropical fish and marine life flourish in the surrounding coral reef and tranquil waters, meaning tight lines are a common occurrence. Chartered fishing trips are available for those wanting to fish the hot spots. You can hire gear on the Island – remember to be up to date on Marine Park Zoning Areas.

Little did you know... Queensland has the highest number of boat registrations out of all Australian states.

Island Imagination

Great Barrier Reef and Islands Explore the depths One of Australia’s most remarkable gifts is the Great Barrier Reef, a treasure which the Townsville Region is most proud of and a ‘must do’ experience for visitors. From Townsville or Magnetic Island you can take a dive or snorkel trip to the Great Barrier Reef. For the uninitiated, dive operators offer scuba diving lessons with wetsuits, tanks and face masks available for hire. Snorkellers can hire gear and dive in straight off Magnetic Island’s beaches to discover fringing reefs. Explore the recently constructed snorkelling trails at Nelly and Geoffrey Bays and be sure to keep a look out for the WWII aeroplane propeller in Geoffrey Bay. Experienced divers should visit the S.S. Yongala, a 28m deep shipwreck that sank off the coast of Ayr (just south of Townsville in the Burdekin) during a tropical cyclone in 1911. Rated one of the world’s top 10 dive wrecks, the S.S. Yongala is home to a captivating array of hard and soft coral and spectacular marine life including sea turtles, sea anemone and thousands of inquisitive reef fish. Dive trips to the S.S. Yongala depart Townsville, Magnetic Island or Alva Beach in the Burdekin. This historic wreck will leave you with memories that last a lifetime.

Ravenswood Step back in time and explore this unique heritage listed gold mining town. A short 40km detour off the Flinders Highway, en-route to Charters Towers, you will find historic Ravenswood.

Ghosts of the Past The late 1800s was a boom era for the town, with 48 hotels and shanties quenching the thirst of the early gold miners. Today two hotels, both more than 100 years old, remain as magnificent reminders of the town’s prosperous beginnings. Both hotels are believed to be haunted, with many visitors having ghostly experiences.

Stepping Back in Time The main street looks like a movie set with its beautiful old buildings, mullock heaps and chimney stacks. The Court House Museum, the restored School House, Thorp’s Building and Butler’s Cottage are just some of the treasures of this tiny town. Take a self-guided walk to visit them all or climb to the top of the local lookout to view the amazing open-cut mine. Travel just 5km out of town to admire the unusual geological formation that is White Blow Conservation Park, where a unique white quartz outcrop stands.

The Hunt For Gold Continues

As mining declined, the tiny town survived by relying on the surrounding cattle properties. A new lease of life came about in 1995, when the population of 100 locals was boosted by the arrival of some 300 miners to once again reap the rewards of gold mining.

Once the second largest city in Queensland, Charters Towers is as rich in history as it is in gold. Today, Charters Towers is the rural hub for graziers and the mining industry while it is probably best known as the host of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest cricket carnival – the Gold Field Ashes – every January. Eureka!

Gold was first discovered in Charters Towers in 1871 by an Aboriginal horse boy, Jupiter. Thousands flocked from across the globe in a mad rush to Charters Towers. The city was believed to have everything a civilised person could want and soon became known as “The World”. The magnificent heritage buildings evident throughout the town are testament to the prosperity of the era. The heritage listed Stock Exchange Arcade, the World Theatre, City Hall and the Post Office Tower will have you reaching for your camera.

Golden Charms

The nationally significant Venus Gold Battery is the largest surviving battery relic in Australia and the oldest surviving battery in Queensland. Built in 1872, the Battery offers a fascinating insight into the milling process of the time and the ‘business’ of gold. A few ghostly characters will also share some secrets with you. For those looking to explore life on the goldfields, the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Trail brings to life some of the city’s most colourful and influential characters. 30
