With over two-thirds of the Island classified as National Park, Magnetic Island offers an array of walking tracks to explore, and provides a haven for native wildlife including rock wallabies, possums, more than 100 different bird species and Northern Australia’s largest population of koalas living in the wild.
Enjoy alfresco dining, urban street art, coffee along the beachfront, vibrant night life in laneway bars and eateries, boutique shopping and explore the art, culture and entertainment which brings the city to life.
Charters Towers See page 36
Basking in more than 300 days of sunshine each year and surrounded by a myriad of natural wonders, Townsville is a nature lover’s paradise. Ideal for families, couples and friends to explore tropical islands, wetlands, the Great Barrier Reef, wet tropics rainforests and a glorious beachfront. No matter what your holiday style, Townsville offers you a diverse range of historical, military, outback, island, active and tranquil experiences.
Take a step back in time and discover the laid-back charm and elegance of Charters Towers, a whole different world where you can really live Australia’s story and see the Outback just 90 minutes inland from Townsville. Driving through the streets of Charters Towers is like viewing a living montage of Australian history and heritage. When gold was first discovered in Charters Towers in 1871, Charters Towers became a gold rush town and quickly grew to become the second largest town in Queensland. Today, you can really feel the history through the magnificent heritage buildings which are testament to the prosperity of years past. Visit the drive-in cinema for an experience of an era of picture shows under the stars, pan for gold at the Miner’s Cottage, take in the views of the vast and stunning landscape from Towers Hill Lookout, enjoy a true outback encounter at Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours or take a guided walking or bus tour throughout the town.

Famous for being the sugar capital of Australia, the Burdekin district is located about an hour’s drive south of Townsville. Nestled in the delta of the Burdekin River, its two popular townships - Ayr and Home Hill - are linked by the iconic Burdekin Bridge. The region produces the biggest sugar cane crops in the country, together with a diverse selection of vegetables and tropical fruits. Along the coast you will find Alva Beach, a popular launching spot for dive boats heading out to explore the SS Yongala shipwreck. This shipwreck has been ranked as one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world due to its abundant marine life and corals. The Burdekin region is also a popular spot for fishing and the town centre offers a number of great specialty stores.
