Magnetic Island See page 32 Uncover a tropical island paradise surrounded by secluded bays, golden beaches and activities to excite everyone. Just a short 20 minute ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island has the natural beauty and serenity of an untouched paradise within a thriving community. With over two-thirds of the Island classified as National Park, Magnetic Island offers an array of walking tracks to explore, and provides a haven for native wildlife including rock wallabies, possums, more than 100 different bird species and Northern Australia’s largest population of koalas living in the wild.
Charters Towers See page 36 Take a step back in time and discover the laid-back charm and elegance of Charters Towers, a whole different world where you can really live Australia’s story and see the Outback just 90 minutes inland from Townsville. Driving through the streets of Charters Towers is like viewing a living montage of Australian history and heritage. When gold was first discovered in Charters Towers in 1871, Charters Towers became a gold rush town and quickly grew to become the second largest town in Queensland. Today, you can really feel the history through the magnificent heritage buildings which are testament to the prosperity of years past. Visit the drivein cinema for an experience of an era of picture shows under the stars, pan for gold at the Miner’s Cottage, take in the views of the vast and stunning landscape from Towers Hill Lookout, enjoy a true outback encounter at Texas Longhorn Wagon Tours or take a guided walking or bus tour throughout the town.
Hinchinbrook
See page 40
Hinchinbrook is a nature lover’s dream! Home of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest single drop waterfall, Wallaman Falls, Hinchinbrook Shire is also the southern gateway to the Wet Tropics World Heritage listed rainforests and provides awe-inspiring scenery around every corner. The town centre of Ingham is known for its large Italian community and is a popular place to taste authentic Italian cuisine as well as a diverse range of local produce. Enjoy boutique shopping within the town centre, take a walk along the TYTO Wetlands, see what birdlife you can spot or explore the region’s estuarine waterways, perfect for catching barramundi.
Burdekin See page 42 Famous for being the sugar capital of Australia, the Burdekin district is located about an hour’s drive south of Townsville. Nestled in the delta of the Burdekin River, its two popular townships – Ayr and Home Hill – are linked by the iconic Burdekin Bridge. The region produces the biggest sugar cane crops in the country, together with a diverse selection of vegetables and tropical fruits. Along the coast you will find Alva Beach, a popular launching spot for dive boats heading out to explore the SS Yongala shipwreck. This shipwreck has been ranked as one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world due to its abundant marine life and corals. The Burdekin region is also a popular spot for fishing and the town centre offers a number of great specialty stores.

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF Immerse yourself in one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders and discover a pristine underwater wonderland. Admire the vibrant coloured coral and observe nature at work. The central section of the Great Barrier Reef has less boating traffic and impact from human activity, giving snorkelers and divers a truly breathtaking experience. Follow schools of marine life weaving through the vibrant coloured corals which fill the ocean floor, find nemo hiding amongst anemones and cruise alongside rays and turtles. Throughout the experience you’ll discover how the reef is managed, what makes it such an incredible place and all about the creatures which call it home. Take away lifetime memories and discover this majestic world that offers a guaranteed wow factor. Day trips often visit Lodestone Reef, home to a variety of habitats from shallow areas with white sandy sea floor and large coral bommies (outcrops), to steep slopes with deep crevasses, hosting a great diversity of fish life, including small damsels and butterfly fish to larger animals like the giant trevally and occasional reef shark. The multi-day trips travel mostly at night to maximise the dive time on the reef, visiting a variety of locations including: • Wheeler Reef, with its white sandy cay and many pelagic species. • Davies Reef with pinnacles rising from 30m and shallower bommies riddled with swim throughs and caves. • Barra Bommie at Little Broadhurst Reef, where you can spot an octopus. • Australia’s best dive, the Yongala Wreck, with the biggest diversity of large marine life around the world – Queensland groupers weighing over 300kg, giant trevally, turtles, sea snakes, bull sharks and eagle rays just to mention a few.
SS Yongala Wreck
Sailing and fishing on the Great Barrier Reef
Experienced divers should put the SS Yongala Wreck at the top of their itinerary! This world famous dive explores the 28m deep shipwreck, that sank off the coast of Ayr (just south of Townsville in the Burdekin) during a tropical cyclone in 1911. Rated one of the world’s top 10 dive wrecks, the SS Yongala is home to a captivating array of hard and soft coral and spectacular marine life including sea turtles, sea anemone and thousands of inquisitive reef fish. Dive trips depart from Townsville, Magnetic Island and Alva Beach in the Burdekin. This historic wreck will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
Townsville North Queensland’s tropical weather provides the perfect environment for sailing and boating. Experienced sailors can charter a vessel to sail through the many secluded areas. If you prefer group interaction, there are plenty of day trips departing Townsville and Magnetic Island. The Great Barrier Reef is a fishing paradise with some of the most succulent catches being spanish mackerel, coral trout, red emperor and sweet lip. More than one third of the Great Barrier Reef is declared a no-take zone, so if you are looking to catch and cook, check the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Zoning Regulations before you leave the shore.

Fishing
The SS Yongala shipwreck lies just off the coast of Ayr and is ranked one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. This is a must-do for experienced divers. Yongala Dive, based at Alva Beach, is the fastest way to get to the site and discover the magnificent marine life that calls the wreck home. Read more on page 28.
Fantastic fishing is on offer in the estuaries and waterways of the fertile Burdekin Delta. Fishing tours are available to catch barramundi, mud crabs, prawns, mangrove jack and more!
Watch a cane fire The Burdekin is the biggest and sweetest sugar cane producer in the country and is one of the few cane growing regions left in Australia where cane is burnt before harvesting. The magnificent cane fires frequently light up the evening skies between June and December.

Burdekin River bridge The Burdekin Bridge, which links Ayr and Home Hill, is the district’s best known landmark. Known as the Silver Link, the 1,103m crossing is the only bridge in Australia without a solid footing and is longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge. An Engineering Heritage National Landmark award was unveiled on the southern side of the bridge in 2010.
