Great Barrier Reef & Islands It’s nature’s greatest gift to the world!

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest and longest coral reef system, stretching for 2,300km along the East Coast of Queensland.

Townsville North Queensland is the gateway to the central section of the Great Barrier Reef which has less boating traffic and impact from human activity, giving snorkelers and divers access to some of the world’s most spectacular coral and marine life.

For land-lovers looking to witness the Great Barrier Reef firsthand, there are a number of stunning island options to suit everyone’s holiday desires. Stretch out on a sun-soaked beach, venture through untouched National Parks, or helicopter to a private sand cay.

Snorkelling & diving The best way to see the Great Barrier Reef is to get up-close and personal. Within a two hour boat ride from Townsville, you can snorkel and dive some of the most secluded and pristine reefs along the East Coast. Regular day trips depart from Townsville and Magnetic Island to Lodestone Reef or Keeper Reef, both offering snorkelers shallow coral gardens overflowing with fish. Divers will discover deep coral canyons and bommies. Stay a little longer on a multi-day liveaboard with Adrenalin Snorkel & Dive or join a dive safari with Remote Area Dive.

Magnetic Island Snorkel Trails Walk straight off Nelly or Geoffrey Bay on Magnetic Island to discover fringing reefs guided by permanent snorkel trails.

Pick up a handy swim card from the local supermarket or dive store to learn about the coral and marine life – you may even discover a WWII plane propeller!

Shipwrecked on the SS Yongala Certified divers should have the SS Yongala wreck at the top of their bucket list – it is recognised as the best wreck dive along the Great Barrier Reef and one of the top 10 in the world.

After disappearing during a cyclone and laying undetected for almost 50 years, today the wreck captivates divers with its array of hard and soft coral, intact preservation, pristine beauty and spectacular marine life including turtles, Marble Rays, Wrasse, Giant Gropers and even sharks and migrating Humpback Whales.

Join Yongala Dive for your quickest link to the wreck, with tours and on-site accommodation based in Alva Beach in the Burdekin. Tours also depart directly from Townsville and Magnetic Island.

Palm Island Magnetic Island Just a 20 minute ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island boasts the natural beauty and serenity of an island paradise with a thriving community – more than 2,500 people call the Island home. Located 65km north-west of Townsville, Palm Island is the traditional country of the Manbarra people and, more recently, home of the Bwgcolman tribal people.

Experience the largest single-drop waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere at Wallaman Falls, just an hour west of Ingham, Hinchinbrook. Hike to the base of the Falls and explore the surrounding Wet Tropics World Heritage Area of Girringun National Park, home to some of the oldest rainforests on Earth and many endangered plants and animals.

Rugged mountains rise from the wetlands, saltpans and mangroves of this coastal plain in the Mount Elliot section of Bowling Green Bay National Park. Alligator Creek descends in a series of cascades, deep pools and waterfalls. Venture to Cape Bowling Green to see Australia’s longest sand spit.

Ross River Parkway 10 mins (6.6km) south from Townsville City

Paluma Range National Park

The Ross River Parkway is linked by 30km of shared pathways along both banks of the picturesque Ross River.

Walk or cycle from the city across Townsville to the Upper Ross River, with a number of recreational facilities available along the way.

Townsville Town Common Conservation Park and Cape Pallarenda

Escape to the cool mountain air and tranquility of the Paluma Range. Big Crystal Creek sits just 7km off the Bruce Highway and offers waterholes, outcrops of large rocks and natural rockslides.

Further up the range, Little Crystal Creek is well known for its historic stone arch bridge overlooking some of the best freshwater swimming holes in the North. Further north along the Highway, Jourama Falls offers beautiful places to relax, camp, walk and enjoy watching birds, butterflies and other native wildlife.

Broadwater, Abergowrie State Forest

10 mins (6.6km) north from Townsville City

The Townsville Town Common is an everchanging landscape, offering a number of trails spanning mountaintops, sandy beaches and coastal wetlands along Cape Pallarenda, and nearly 280 bird species.

Dalrymple National Park

Anderson Gardens Townsville’s largest botanic garden, with tropical trees, palms, grand avenues and the World Cycad Collection covering 25 hectares.

2 hrs (177km) west from Townsville City

Just 42km north of Charters Towers, the park’s highlights include ancient lava flows, fossilised limestone, the Burdekin River and access to parts of the former Dalrymple township, one of the first inland settlements in northern Australia.

2 hrs (150km) north from Townsville City

Just 47km north-west of Ingham, Broadwater features a number of short walks, swimming and birdwatching opportunities amongst the tropical rainforest and open eucalypt forest of Abergowrie State Forest. Cool down with a swim in Broadwater Creek, wander through the rainforest or relax in the day-use areas, complete with picnic and barbecue facilities.

Magnetic Island itself is an important breeding spot for green and flatback turtles, with freshwater turtles commonly spotted in creeks and waterholes, including Townsville’s Ross River.
