Great Barrier Reef & Islands It’s nature’s greatest gift to the world! The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest and longest coral reef system, stretching for 2,300km along the East Coast of Queensland. Townsville North Queensland is the gateway to the central section of the Great Barrier Reef which has less boating traffic and impact from human activity, giving snorkelers and divers access to some of the world’s most spectacular coral and marine life. For land-lovers looking to witness the Great Barrier Reef firsthand, there are a number of stunning island options to suit everyone’s holiday desires. Stretch out on a sun-soaked beach, venture through untouched National Parks, or helicopter to a private sand cay.
Snorkelling & diving The best way to see the Great Barrier Reef is to get up-close and personal. Within a two hour boat ride from Townsville, you can snorkel and dive some of the most secluded and pristine reefs along the East Coast. Regular day trips depart from Townsville and Magnetic Island to Lodestone Reef or Keeper Reef, both offering snorkelers shallow coral gardens overflowing with fish. Divers will discover deep coral canyons and bommies. Stay a little longer on a multi-day liveaboard with Adrenalin Snorkel & Dive or join a dive safari with Remote Area Dive. Magnetic Island Snorkel Trails Walk straight off Nelly or Geoffrey Bay on Magnetic Island to discover fringing reefs guided by permanent snorkel trails. Pick up a handy swim card from the local supermarket or dive store to learn about the coral and marine life – you may even discover a WWII plane propeller!
Shipwrecked on the SS Yongala Certified divers should have the SS Yongala wreck at the top of their bucket list – it is recognised as the best wreck dive along the Great Barrier Reef and one of the top 10 in the world. After disappearing during a cyclone and laying undetected for almost 50 years, today the wreck captivates divers with its array of hard and soft coral, intact preservation, pristine beauty and spectacular marine life including turtles, Marble Rays, Wrasse, Giant Gropers and even sharks and migrating Humpback Whales. Join Yongala Dive for your quickest link to the wreck, with tours and on-site accommodation based in Alva Beach in the Burdekin. Tours also depart directly from Townsville and Magnetic Island.
Get Dive Certified If you’re interested in becoming a certified diver, where better to learn than the Great Barrier Reef? Townsville North Queensland is home to a number of operators who provide certified diving courses for beginners to advanced. Snorkelling at Keeper Reef by @cleocohen

In the water
Koalas: Spot one of Magnetic Island’s local koalas that make up Northern Australia’s largest colony living in the wild.
From the Great Barrier Reef to the SS Yongala wreck, and the easily accessible Magnetic Island Snorkel Trails, the waters surrounding Townsville North Queensland are swimming with some of Australia’s most iconic aquatic animals.
Wallabies: Get up close and personal to the social rock wallabies at Geoffrey Bay on Magnetic Island, with hotspots on the mainland including Towers Hill in Charters Towers, Inkerman Hill in the Burdekin and the TYTO Wetlands in Hinchinbrook. Visit at sunset when the wallabies are most active and see how many you can spot while taking in the amazing views. Platypus: Voted by Australian Geographic as one of the top five places to see a platypus in the wild, the team at Hidden Valley Cabins have a 98% success rate of spotting an elusive Northern Platypus in Paluma Range National Park.
Magnetic Island itself is an important breeding spot for green and flatback turtles, with freshwater turtles commonly spotted in creeks and waterholes, including Townsville’s Ross River. Dolphins and dugongs can be spotted off the coast, and don’t miss your chance to see a Humpback Whale during migration from July to September. Venture out on a dedicated whale watching tour with SeaLink Queensland, charter a vessel and keep your eyes peeled on island transfers and reef tours. Coral spawning: One of the most amazing experiences under the sea is annual coral spawning (October – November), where coral simultaneously release gametes into the water for reproduction causing an amazing underwater ‘snowglobe’ effect of colour.

The golden days
With the region’s strong and continuous involvement in the military spanning well over a century, there are stories to uncover at every turn.
When gold was discovered in Charters Towers in the 1870s, the region flourished to become a thriving city centre and was affectionately nicknamed ‘The World’ as it was said that everything you might desire could be found there. Today, the region is a living montage of the bygone era and the grandeur that once was.
Tour Townsville Join a Military Tour to discover the stories and feel the emotion firsthand from a local ex-serviceman, who will not only share what times were like during the war, but show how these events have influenced Townsville to become the city it is today. Anzac Park and Jezzine Barracks, The Strand, Townsville On The Strand, visit Anzac Park to discover a number of memorials amongst lush gardens, or explore Jezzine Barracks to see bunkers and gun emplacements, informative displays and visit the Army Museum North Queensland. Enjoy the stunning 360-degree views and an abundance of wildlife along the way.
Venus Battery View the process of extracting gold, hear stories of the Battery’s working life and some of its ghosts at the Venus Gold Battery, the largest surviving Battery relic in Australia and the oldest in Queensland.
