Borobi explores Townsville In the countdown to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, adorable mascot Borobi hit the road to explore this patch of Queensland and found, if you’re limited on time, you can’t miss these six things to do in Townsville.

Take a hike up Castle Hill No time for snoozin’ when there’s an epic sunrise to watch, and the best viewpoint, paws down, is from the summit of Castle Hill. Falling just short of a mountain, this pink granite monolith stands at 285 metres tall in the Townsville CBD, serving up 360° views of the city stretching out all the way to Magnetic Island. Not much of a morning person? Don’t let that stop you from exploring the many different walking tracks at any given time of the day.

World-class courtside action in tropical Townsville Teamwork, tactics and skill will take over Queensland as GC2018 Basketball is contested in Cairns, Townsville and the Gold Coast. With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, Townsville North Queensland is a tropical paradise. From the idyllic rainforest to the magical Great Barrier Reef and the breathtaking red outback, here, Australia’s iconic landscapes converge. But during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, all eyes will be on the court at Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre, where spectators will witness worldclass basketball and entertainment in paradise. Teams will compete in only the second Commonwealth Games Basketball competition in history and the first since Melbourne 2006. With four captivating quarters of action each match, spectators will witness some of the world’s best players defending, rebounding, dribbling, dunking, shooting and scoring in an on-court battle for Commonwealth supremacy.

The GC2018 competition will showcase eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams. The competition begins with teams divided into two pools of four teams. The top ranked four teams are in Pool A, and the bottom ranked four teams in Pool B. At the conclusion of the pool stage, the top two teams from Pool A will proceed to the semi-finals, while the bottom two teams from Pool A will play the top two teams from Pool B in the qualifying finals. The remaining two Pool B teams are eliminated. The preliminary rounds and qualifying finals will be played in Cairns and Townsville, with the semi-finals and medal matches hosted on the Gold Coast. Townsville will host 12 preliminary rounds and two qualifying finals over five days. Cheer on our very own Australian Opals in the women’s Pool A as they shoot for gold at the start of their Commonwealth Games campaign. They will compete against Canada, England and Mozambique in the preliminaries. In the men’s Pool B, 2006 bronze medalists England will challenge teams from Cameroon, India and Scotland. It’s a spectacle rarely seen outside the major capitals: top-notch international sport set in idyllic North Queensland.

Queen’s Baton Relay Be part of an iconic Commonwealth Games tradition when the Queen’s Baton Relay passes through Townsville in March 2018, on its way to the Gold Coast. The relay celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity, inspires community pride, and is guaranteed to excite people about the world-class festival of sports and culture to come. The Queen’s Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain raiser to the Commonwealth Games since the 1958 Games in Cardiff, Wales. Starting at Buckingham Palace and making its way to the host city, the Queen’s Baton carries with it a message to the athletes of the Commonwealth from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On arrival, the message is removed from the baton and read at the opening ceremony by Her Majesty or her representative.

The relay arrives in Townsville on Sunday 18 March 2018 and will move from West End to Jezzine Barracks between 2.00pm and 5.30pm. On Monday 19 March 2018, the relay will recommence at 7.40am from Reid Park, finishing in Cranbrook at around 10.00am. Join us to be part of this historic event! Held across 12 days in April, Festival 2018 will feature a mix of highly acclaimed theatrical productions, an eclectic array of world-class musicians, breathtaking dance and physical theatre pieces, striking visual art and Indigenous arts practice. Strand Park With breathtaking views of Magnetic Island and overlooking the Coral Sea, Strand Park embodies the Townsville lifestyle that locals know and love. Modelled on Adelaide Fringe Festival’s famous Garden of Unearthly Delights, the park will be alive with performances day and night. Coming to Townsville for the first time will be two traditional Spiegeltents, as seen at festivals in major cities such as Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane. The Spiegeltents are a venue like no other and will house incredible

Jezzine Barracks Jezzine Barracks is a historic landmark steeped in history, both for Townsville as a garrison city, and as a place of significant cultural history to the traditional land owners, the Bindal and Gurambilbarra-Wulgurukaba people. The barracks and the parkland surrounding it are the perfect place for Townsville’s own opening and closing ceremonies for the 2018 Commonwealth Games which coincide with the official events held on the Gold Coast. Listen to the hugely popular band of the First Royal Australian Regiment as they perform Festival 2018 in Townsville, and watch on as a magical Beating the Retreat Ceremony from the 3rd Brigade closes the Festival as a salute to Townsville’s rich military history.

Townsville galleries and exhibitions for 2018 Year after year, Townsville’s galleries play host to the country’s best touring exhibitions and showcase awe-inspiring work from North Queensland’s top artists. The 2018 calendar is no exception, with exhibitions showcasing everything from classic to contemporary, portraiture to landscapes, the weird, the wacky, the ground-breaking, and the thought-provoking.

A 3D animation will encourage young children to join in and immerse themselves in the themes of the exhibition. The Biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards also returns in 2018 (27 July – 16 September) at the Pinnacles Gallery. The exhibition aims to showcase some of the incredible pottery works being created throughout Australia. The City of Townsville Art Collection Award of $10,000 provides opportunities for artists to contribute to one of the most significant ceramic collections in the country, as well as ensuring the continued growth of an important and prized portion of the City of Townsville Art Collection.

The annual Percival Portrait Painting Prize returns to Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in 2018. Since 2007, The Percivals have highlighted the innovative and creative works being produced by established Australian artists, while providing a platform for emerging artists to explore the intricacies of portraiture. Acclaimed Brisbane artist, Richard Dunlop, will have his latest body of work A Northern Survey featured at Perc Tucker Gallery in 2018 (20 July– 9 September). The exhibition explores life in the north and delves into themes of the seasons and climate.

The People’s Percivals returns for the third time in 2018. Since its inaugural display in 2014, the exhibition has showcased some of the amazing portrait photography taken of Townsville locals.

The People’s Percival Once again, Townsville Galleries are looking for the faces of Townsville to line Flinders Street and display the fun-loving and high-spirited people that make Townsville the colourful and wonderful place it is. There are 60 spaces available for the characters of Townsville to line Flinders Street on banners that are displayed for the duration of The Percivals from 27 April to 15 July 2018. For your chance to have your photo on show in Flinders Street, email a high-resolution photo of your Townsvillian and include your name, email, phone number and the first name of your photo talent.

Townsville North Queensland and why?

A Without question Magnetic Island – it is home for me and an absolute hidden gem. From the fringing coral reef, green sea turtles nesting along the beaches, awesome walking, running and mountain bike trails, koalas in the wild, 23 gorgeous beaches, great food and coffee. What’s not to love?

A I’ve got lots, but my absolute favourite is the Great Barrier Reef because it’s amazing and so much fun. Last time we went to the Reef we saw big turtles, groupers, rainbow fish and clown fish – it’s mind-blowing and I have so much fun snorkeling.

A The Strand... because it’s one of the highlights of Townsville to enjoy any time of the day or night, whether walking the dog, running, swimming in the ocean, having a picnic or enjoying one of the many cafés or restaurants. There is always lots of activity and a great vibe!

Discover Australia’s highest single-drop waterfall Top Tips: The drive to Wallaman Falls from Townsville is approximately two hours. Leave early to beat the heat. If you think you’ve seen big waterfalls, you haven’t seen anything like Wallaman Falls. You can take the easy option and enjoy the beauty from the lookout, but if you really want to get the best views you’ll want to venture to the base via the 2km trail. As you walk amongst the rainforest the roar of the falls will gradually get louder. Eventually the twisty path will lead you to a sight that can only be described as jaw-dropping – look up and witness crystal clear water tumbling a spectacular 268 metres.

What do you get when you combine WWII history with stunning ocean vistas and regular sightings of koalas? The Forts Walk on Magnetic Island! Magnetic Island has the largest colony of koalas in Northern Australia and the best location to spot these resident locals is on the spectacular Forts Walk. On this walk you’ll also be awarded with some of Magnetic Island’s best views and fascinating WWII fortifications, this is one not to miss!

Pick up the Pace Want to really stretch out the legs and hit the pavement for a run? Well, you’re in luck because Townsville has some amazing running paths – perfect for everyone from the weekend warrior to the marathoner. The Strand, Townsville’s stunning beachfront, offers 2.5km of flat, fast and breezy footpath, perfect for that PB run. If you’re looking for something a bit longer, head out on the linking path to the end of Pallarenda, where you’ll be able to easily clock up 21km return. If you want to challenge yourself and meet some of the local running talent why not join one of Townsville’s two park run courses on a Saturday morning. Located at Riverway and Northshore, these 5km timed runs are the perfect way to kick start an active weekend and holiday! If pavements and footpaths aren’t your style, hit the trails at Pallarenda or Douglas for an offroad running (or mountain biking) experience.
