Borobi enjoying the view from Castle Hill, Townsville Image credit Romy Bullerjahn

Borobi explores Townsville In the countdown to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, adorable mascot Borobi hit the road to explore this patch of Queensland and found, if you’re limited on time, you can’t miss these six things to do in Townsville.

Take a hike up Castle Hill No time for snoozin’ when there’s an epic sunrise to watch, and the best viewpoint, paws down, is from the summit of Castle Hill. Falling just short of a mountain, this pink granite monolith stands at 285 metres tall in the Townsville CBD, serving up 360° views of the city stretching out all the way to Magnetic Island. Not much of a morning person? Don’t let that stop you from exploring the many different walking tracks at any given time of the day.

complete with it’s own Turtle Hospital and Predator Exhibit to boot.

Chase the sun with Townsville Helicopters Make like Arnie and “get to da chopper” for a sunset flight with Townsville Helicopters. You’ll follow the Ross River down to Ross Creek and CBD, getting an eagle-eye view of The Strand and Castle Hill, before flying over the 15-hectare heritage precinct known as Jezzine Barracks. The Barracks are a significant site of history for both the Australian military and local indigenous people.

Venture off the beaten path of one of Magnetic Island’s secluded bays and get mask down snorkel up with huge coral and colourful reef fish in less time than it took you to slip, slop, slap. Jump onboard with Aquascene Charters Magnetic Island for a half day experience that will give you the local insight to the best island spots to snorkel, swim and soak up the sun!

Take in a tropical sunset at Magnetic Island’s West Point

Skill up on all things reef Get your hands wet meeting the friendly locals – aka creatures of the Great Barrier Reef – at the world’s largest living coral aquarium, Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium. With over 150 species of fish and 120 species of hard and soft corals at home in the expansive Coral Reef Exhibit (which holds 2.5 million litres of water and is the size of an Olympic swimming pool), it’s basically the land-lubbers version of the reef itself,

Sun and snorkel

Cruise Magnetic Island in style Feel the wind in your hair (or fur) when you hire a colourful topless car and explore the 52-glorious-square kilometres of Magnetic Island. Home to the largest colony of wild koalas in Australia, make sure you keep an eye out for Borobi’s furry mates and the resident rock wallabies as you beep beep beep your way around the island’s bays and beaches.

Watch the sky turn to gold as you kick back on the beach at West Point to catch the sun dip behind the Townsville coastline. Better yet, pack a picnic and bring your fishing rods and make it a long, lazy afternoon!

World-class courtside action in tropical Townsville Teamwork, tactics and skill will take over Queensland as GC2018 Basketball is contested in Cairns, Townsville and the Gold Coast. With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, Townsville North Queensland is a tropical paradise. From the idyllic rainforest to the magical Great Barrier Reef and the breathtaking red outback, here, Australia’s iconic landscapes converge. But during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, all eyes will be on the court at Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre, where spectators will witness worldclass basketball and entertainment in paradise. Teams will compete in only the second Commonwealth Games Basketball competition in history and the first since Melbourne 2006. With four captivating quarters of action each match, spectators will witness some of the world’s best players defending, rebounding, dribbling, dunking, shooting and scoring in an on-court battle for Commonwealth supremacy.

8

The GC2018 competition will showcase eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams. The competition begins with teams divided into two pools of four teams. The top ranked four teams are in Pool A, and the bottom ranked four teams in Pool B. At the conclusion of the pool stage, the top two teams from Pool A will proceed to the semi-finals, while the bottom two teams from Pool A will play the top two teams from Pool B in the qualifying finals. The remaining two Pool B teams are eliminated. The preliminary rounds and qualifying finals will be played in Cairns and Townsville, with the semi-finals and medal matches hosted on the Gold Coast. Townsville will host 12 preliminary rounds and two qualifying finals over five days. Cheer on our very own Australian Opals in the women’s Pool A as they shoot for gold at the start of their Commonwealth Games campaign. They will compete against Canada, England and Mozambique in the preliminaries. In the men’s Pool B, 2006 bronze medalists England will challenge teams from Cameroon, India and Scotland. It’s a spectacle rarely seen outside the major capitals: top-notch international sport set in idyllic North Queensland.

Queen’s Baton Relay Be part of an iconic Commonwealth Games tradition when the Queen’s Baton Relay passes through Townsville in March 2018, on its way to the Gold Coast. The relay celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity, inspires community pride, and is guaranteed to excite people about the world-class festival of sports and culture to come. The Queen’s Baton Relay has been the traditional curtain raiser to the Commonwealth Games since the 1958 Games in Cardiff, Wales. Starting at Buckingham Palace and making its way to the host city, the Queen’s Baton carries with it a message to the athletes of the Commonwealth from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On arrival, the message is removed from the baton and read at the opening ceremony by Her Majesty or her representative.

The relay arrives in Townsville on Sunday 18 March 2018 and will move from West End to Jezzine Barracks between 2.00pm and 5.30pm. On Monday 19 March 2018, the relay will recommence at 7.40am from Reid Park, finishing in Cranbrook at around 10.00am. Join us to be part of this historic event! Full details regarding the Queen’s Baton Relay can be found on the Townsville City Council website: www.townsville.qld.gov.au

Townsville galleries and exhibitions for 2018 Year after year, Townsville’s galleries play host to the country’s best touring exhibitions and showcase awe-inspiring work from North Queensland’s top artists. The 2018 calendar is no exception, with exhibitions showcasing everything from classic to contemporary, portraiture to landscapes, the weird, the wacky, the ground-breaking, and the thought-provoking.

A 3D animation will encourage young children to join in and immerse themselves in the themes of the exhibition. The Biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards also returns in 2018 (27 July – 16 September) at the Pinnacles Gallery. The exhibition aims to showcase some of the incredible pottery works being created throughout Australia. The City of Townsville Art Collection Award of $10,000 provides opportunities for artists to contribute to one of the most significant ceramic collections in the country, as well as ensuring the continued growth of an important and prized portion of the City of Townsville Art Collection.

The annual Percival Portrait Painting Prize returns to Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in 2018. Since 2007, The Percivals have highlighted the innovative and creative works being produced by established Australian artists, while providing a platform for emerging artists to explore the intricacies of portraiture. Acclaimed Brisbane artist, Richard Dunlop, will have his latest body of work A Northern Survey featured at Perc Tucker Gallery in 2018 (20 July– 9 September). The exhibition explores life in the north and delves into themes of the seasons and climate.

The People’s Percivals returns for the third time in 2018. Since its inaugural display in 2014, the exhibition has showcased some of the amazing portrait photography taken of Townsville locals.

The People’s Percival Once again, Townsville Galleries are looking for the faces of Townsville to line Flinders Street and display the fun-loving and high-spirited people that make Townsville the colourful and wonderful place it is. There are 60 spaces available for the characters of Townsville to line Flinders Street on banners that are displayed for the duration of The Percivals from 27 April to 15 July 2018. For your chance to have your photo on show in Flinders Street, email a high-resolution photo of your Townsvillian and include your name, email, phone number and the first name of your photo talent.

Shhh! Five Townsville North Queensland beaches you may not have heard of With 320 days of sunshine each year, Townsville North Queensland is a beach-lover’s paradise! From The Strand (Townsville’s awardwinning promenade), to the bays of neighbouring tropical islands and beachside towns lining the coast, you’ll be spoilt for choice. But what about the sandy stretches that are a little less known? Here’s a local’s guide to Townsville North Queensland’s best hidden beaches.

Radical Bay, Magnetic Island It’s no secret that Magnetic Island is a must-do on any Townsville North Queensland holiday, but did you know that the Island offers 23 bays and beaches to explore? One of the most secluded and arguably most beautiful beaches on the Island is Radical Bay, only accessible by boat, 4WD or on foot – but let us tell you, it’s well worth the trip! Take a dip in the crystal clear waters, soak up the sun from the sand or explore the rocky cliffs and pine trees lining the edges of the beach. You may even find an abandoned piano sitting somewhere beneath the trees…

Just over an hour south of Townsville lies the hidden gem that is Alva Beach. With sand dunes and wildlife, Alva is perfect if you’re looking for the ultimate sunrise shot. Kite surfers and fishermen often occupy the beach, under the watchful eye of the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club. Alva is also home to Yongala Dive, the quickest way to access one of the world’s best dive wrecks, the SS Yongala.

Shelly Beach, Townsville

Cape Cleveland, Townsville If you’re searching for a slice of paradise to have all to yourself, look no further than Cape Cleveland. Only accessible by water or air, the Cape is home to three beautiful beaches and even a Heritage listed lighthouse to explore! Enjoy amazing views across the bay, a small fringing coral reef and an abundance of turtles scouring the coastline – what more could you need?

Alva Beach, Burdekin

Forrest Beach, Hinchinbrook Just 1.5 hours north of Townsville you’ll find the beachside community of Forrest Beach. You can enjoy the long, sandy beach with some of the best fishing you’ll ever come across. Shady playgrounds and barbecue facilities make Forrest Beach the perfect place for a day out with the whole family.

It’s time to hit the trails and explore what lies off the beaten track. Just north of Pallarenda and 10 minutes from Townsville City sits some of the finest hiking and mountain bike trails in the region, along with some of the best coastal views. Explore Many Peaks Range and take a trail to the beautiful and secluded Shelly Beach, with a rocky foreshore to explore and expansive island views.

Travel tips and advice from North Queensland Toyota Cowboy, Coen Hess Q Tell us about an average day in the life of Coen Hess.

A During the season, our day always includes some kind of training – whether it’s on the field or in the gym. We have a strong focus on healthy eating, so we also have sessions on nutrition – which is great, because I love food! We tend to finish our day with a team meeting with the coaching staff, before heading home (sometimes for a nap!). Q What makes Townsville and North

Q Palmer Street, City Lane, Gregory Street, The Strand, Cannon Park – where’s your favourite spot for a meal?

A Townsville is lucky to have so many great places to eat out – there’s something for everyone. It’s tough to choose just one, but I’d have to go with our very own Cowboys Leagues Club in the city! Q Tell us what you believe is Townsville North Queensland’s best kept secret?

Q You’ve just found out your family or close friends are coming to Townsville to visit for a couple of days. What are the must-do’s in your opinion?

A There are so many great things to do in Townsville. As long as their visit included meal stops at some of the local cafés, restaurants, and bars, then I think we’d be onto a winner! The dining options in Townsville are fantastic. I’d also have to take them over to Magnetic Island – it’s such a perfect getaway right on our doorstep!

A North Queensland is such a great part of the world. I love the people here and everyone knows the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys have the best fans in the game. I think that’s because of where we live.

Townsville North Queensland Insider’s Guide

A There are a lot of gems in Townsville, but I think the best would have to be The Strand (Townsville’s beach foreshore) – great places to eat and take in the scenery!

Q The team’s fans are extremely passionate – what makes home games in Townsville such a special experience as a player?

Catch Coen in action at a North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Home Game!

A As I’ve said, I honestly think we have the best fans in the NRL. Playing in front of a home crowd is one of the best feelings that you can’t match. They’re loud and proud – it makes me want to bring my best to the field every time!

The Forts Walk, Magnetic Island Image credit @barekiwi

Wilderness walks Ditch the burpees and forget the fad diets, here are some epic active adventures that you (and your fitness tracker) will actually enjoy. From chasing waterfalls to climbing mountains and everything in between, you’ll be clocking up the steps and taking in the best that nature has to offer with these holiday activities.

When more than 2,500 locals venture up Castle Hill daily, you know the view at the top will be worth the climb. Start from Gregory Street, near Townsville City and walk along the road to the top or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, explore one of the many dirt trails. Either way once you get to the peak you’ll be rewarded with 360° views of Townsville and across to Magnetic Island.

Move over Jurassic Park, Hinchinbrook is here Conquer the Castle Hike: Castle Hill, Townsville Active Level: Medium Distance: 5.2km return Approx Step Count: 6,864 Why? The views! Top tips: Tackle Castle Hill in the early morning or late afternoon to beat the heat. Take water and don’t forget the camera – you’ll want photos at the top.

18

Hike: Thorsborne Trail, Hinchinbrook Island Active Level: Very High Distance: 32km (allow 4 days and 3 nights) Approximate Step Count: 42,240 Why? Described as the ‘holy grail for walkers’ (Lonely Planet) Top tips: Catch a ferry from Lucinda and be prepared to live completely selfsufficient for four days. This is a grade 5 hike, so make sure you’re well trained to tackle this one!

Townsville North Queensland Insider’s Guide

Ok, so you won’t find a dinosaur breeding program here, but Hinchinbrook Island will have you feeling like you’ve stepped back into a prehistoric time! With epic mountainous terrain, meandering creeks and stunning waterfalls, it’s no wonder the Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island is considered world-class, and the best hiking experience in Queensland (as voted by the people who know best – Queensland Parks and Wildlife). So, lace up the hiking boots and prepare for four days of exploring the spectacular wilderness of Hinchinbrook Island. With only 40 permits allowed at any one time, you’ll most likely have the entire place to yourself!

Zoe Falls, Hinchinbrook Island Image credit Melissa Van der Haak

I spy koalas Hike: Forts Walk, Magnetic Island Active Level: Medium Distance: 4km (2 hours return) Approximate Step Count: 5,280 Why? Koala spotting, spectacular ocean outlooks and WWII history Top Tips: If you see sticks on the ground in the shape of an arrow, chances are it’ll be pointing in the direction of a recently sighted koala. Locals leave these markers to make koala sighting easy for everyone.

4,000 steps to jaw dropping Hike: Wallaman Falls, Hinchinbrook Active Level: High Distance: 4km return (2.5 hours) Approximate Step Count: 4,224 Why? Discover Australia’s highest single-drop waterfall Top Tips: The drive to Wallaman Falls from Townsville is approximately two hours. Leave early to beat the heat. If you think you’ve seen big waterfalls, you haven’t seen anything like Wallaman Falls. You can take the easy option and enjoy the beauty from the lookout, but if you really want to get the best views you’ll want to venture to the base via the 2km trail. As you walk amongst the rainforest the roar of the falls will gradually get louder. Eventually the twisty path will lead you to a sight that can only be described as jaw-dropping – look up and witness crystal clear water tumbling a spectacular 268 metres.

What do you get when you combine WWII history with stunning ocean vistas and regular sightings of koalas? The Forts Walk on Magnetic Island! Magnetic Island has the largest colony of koalas in Northern Australia and the best location to spot these resident locals is on the spectacular Forts Walk. On this walk you’ll also be awarded with some of Magnetic Island’s best views and fascinating WWII fortifications, this is one not to miss!

Pick up the Pace Want to really stretch out the legs and hit the pavement for a run? Well, you’re in luck because Townsville has some amazing running paths – perfect for everyone from the weekend warrior to the marathoner. The Strand, Townsville’s stunning beachfront, offers 2.5km of flat, fast and breezy footpath, perfect for that PB run. If you’re looking for something a bit longer, head out on the linking path to the end of Pallarenda, where you’ll be able to easily clock up 21km return. If you want to challenge yourself and meet some of the local running talent why not join one of Townsville’s two park run courses on a Saturday morning. Located at Riverway and Northshore, these 5km timed runs are the perfect way to kick start an active weekend and holiday! If pavements and footpaths aren’t your style, hit the trails at Pallarenda or Douglas for an offroad running (or mountain biking) experience.

For the ultimate dining experience, visit Seasoned on Palmer Street. Sit in one of their four themed rooms (you guessed it – Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring) and let the knowledgeable staff take you on a food journey like no other.

Seeking an island escape?

Craving a meal with a view?

Set to get social?

Longing to dine in style?

Menu tip: #treatyourself to a Seasoned degustation paired with beverages on nearby Flinders Street at Townsville’s hottest cocktail bar, Hooch & Fellow.
