New and Future DEVELOPMENTS NEW: Queensland Country Bank Stadium
Queensland Country Bank Stadium is a centrally located, 25,000 seat, best-practice, multi-purpose regional stadium in Townsville. The February 2020 launch of the new stadium provides a new home for the regions beloved North Queensland Toyota Cowboys NRL Team. Queensland Country Bank Stadium offers corporate and function facilities including: 88 external corporate boxes, 17 corporate suites, two major function rooms, Field Club, Centreline Club, Club Lounge, Chairman’s Lounge, The Terraces and Sky Decks.
The four sites at The Strand, Magnetic Island, Palm Island and John Brewer Reef, The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park send a powerful visual message representing the stories of the region and represent a beautiful blend of art, science and culture. The Museum of Underwater Art is a globally significant project for Townsville, the surrounding regions and more broadly to Queensland and Australia. The Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) is the only underwater art museum in the Southern Hemisphere and is being developed by world renowned artist Jason DeCaires Taylor. The project sees a series of artistic sculptures placed on the ocean floor as a dive and snorkel attraction.

Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium is the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium and has received $40.1 million for refurbishments across four years to upgrade exhibits, the façade, predator tank, coral reef exhibit, turtle hospital and back of house facilities. The Aquarium is closed from February 1, 2021.
COMING SOON: Townsville Airport Redevelopment Townsville Airport will undergo a $80M redevelopment over three years to transform the airport into a modern and efficient facility through terminal refurbishments, access enhancement and infrastructure upgrades included lounges, seating areas and retail space.

Townsville University Hospital runs one of Australia’s largest and busiest emergency departments, which is consistently ranked among the top-performing departments among major tertiary hospitals in Australia. Mater Private Hospital provides medical excellence and specialist services, backed by a commitment to patient-centred care in the Mercy Tradition. Stage 1 of the Master Plan is a $52 million development due for completion mid-2020. The project will deliver a new X-Ray facility, digital Operating Theatres, a new Day Surgery Unit and a new Hospital entrance.
Sports Medicine and Services Townsville is home to two national sporting teams and has been host to a number of State and National sporting events. Given this strong sporting scene, the city boasts a significant number of sports services including physios, chiropractors and sports scientists. The region is also well known for its ability to provide the latest in sports technology and equipment such as antigravity treadmills and heat training facilities. Additional resources and sporting services are also available through the cities two universities – James Cook University and Central Queensland University. Education and Innovation With two internationally renowned universities, James Cook University (JCU) and Central Queensland University (CQU) and two TAFE campuses, education is a large industry for Townsville North Queensland. James Cook University is number one in the world for marine and freshwater biology and in the top 2% of universities in the world with over 21,972 students from 108 countries. JCU’s main campus is based in Townsville with additional campuses in Cairns, Brisbane and Singapore. Central Queensland University currently has over 1000 students studying on campus or via distance education. The campus boasts state of the art nursing and paramedic science labs and teaching spaces. TAFE Queensland North provides further education and training in Queensland and Townsville is also home to Tec-NQ, a registered training organisation and independent senior secondary school. Future projects include a $35M revitalisation of the Pimlico TAFE Campus including modernised learning areas and new equipment for hair and beauty, nursing, visual arts and hospitality facilities is underway. This renovation will cater for anticipated future growth as the region’s specialised non-trade training campus.
Agriculture Townsville North Queensland has a booming farming and livestock sector and is recognised as one of Australia’s premier agricultural areas. The Burdekin and Hinchinbrook are some of Australia’s largest sugar cane producing areas, with over 80,000 hectares of land dedicated to this crop and cane yields among the highest in the nation. Additionally, the Burdekin harvests one-third of the nation’s mangoes and also produces capsicums, zucchinis, pumpkins, corn, melons and an array of other fruit and vegetables. Charters Towers to the west of Townsville is recognised for its quality beef industry. Heavy Industry Townsville North Queensland is a services hub for the Northern Australia mineralisation regions with billions worth of mining, construction and infrastructure projects either underway or proposed for the region. Two major mineral processing plants operate within the region. The Port of Townsville is a catalyst and partner in establishing and developing trade within Northern Queensland and is Queensland’s third largest multicargo port. Marine Science Townsville North Queensland offers access to world class experts and research centres within the marine science field. With the Great Barrier Reef on Townsville’s doorstep it is home to the headquarters of the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and James Cook University (world renowned in marine sciences). 500+ store managers, and regional and state team leaders from around Australia and New Zealand attended the 2018 EB Games and ZING! Pop Culture Conference, injecting nearly $1M into Townsville’s Economy. It was an opportunity for development, networking and for attendees to hear firsthand from gaming industry publishers on the upcoming game releases such as the highly anticipated worldwide launch of Red Dead Redemption 2. Securing this conference in Townsville was a direct result of the Townsville Enterprise Convention Bureau’s attendance at the Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME). The event organisers then visited Townsville shortly after where potential venues were presented, with Townsville then securing the event after bidding against other destination from across the AsiaPacific. The Townsville Enterprise Convention Bureau assisted with a site visit, full conference proposal, acted as an intermediary between venues, arranged an airport welcome with Townsville Airports, suggested dining venues, provided local connections for support services and assisted in sourcing merchandise for delegates. During the conference social events, delegates experienced a private rodeo event at Elite Rodeo, this social function utilised a number of services from local business across food and beverage, transport, accommodation and AV requirements.

The Southern Hemisphere’s largest ecotourism conference was held in November 2018, focused on the Great Barrier Reef. The conference was first in Townsville in 2006, and its return in 2018 was a great outcome for the tourism industry. Having the premier event in Townsville allowed Townsville to showcase its outstanding environmental tourism experiences and facilities to the best ecotourism operators and tourism professionals in the world. A total of 76 presentations and 3 keynote panel discussions were held over 3 days with presentations covering topics on Ecotourism and Protected Areas, Accommodating Ecotourism, Building Sustainable Destinations, Ecotourism and Conservation and Destination Development and Marketing.

Only 40 people are permitted to camp on Hinchinbrook Island at any one time, giving visitors the best possible experience to connect with, and truly appreciate, the raw Jurassic beauty of this natural island playground. If you have a real thirst for adventure, you can’t go past the 32km Thorsborne Trail.
