Bernadette Basiel wins Howard Kelley Award By Mark Dionne

Bernadette Basiel is the latest recipient of the Howard Kelley Award, which is given annually by the Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation to a community volunteer. According to CVEF, “In bestowing this award, we honor the memory of Howard, a founding member of CVEF, the first District 13 Superintendent of Schools, and a strong believer in ongoing lifelong learning and selfless commitment to community.” The nomination was put together by Betsy Dean of Durham Middlefield Youth and Family Services. Basiel got the news in November

and was formally presented with the award on Dec. 10 at the Indian Springs club house. Interviewed after the event, Basiel said, “It was a very pleasant surprise.” In her nominating letter, Dean wrote, “When I think of community service, I automatically think of Bernadette.” Basiel has worn many hats at DMYFS. As Dean wrote, “Throughout her years of volunteerism, Bernadette has served as a [DMYFS] board member in every elected position: president, vice-chair, secretary, and currently serves as the treasurer.” Basiel’s work with DMYFS was the primary focus of her nomination, but she was also

recognized for work with 4-H, the Public Association of Library Supporters, and the Farmers Market. “I was there when the agency was going through some difficult times,” Basiel noted of DMYFS. “We overcame some pretty significant obstacles.” Now, Basiel said, DMYFS is significantly more stable and active. Dean recalled those times when the board ran DMYFS and searched for a new director. “She could have hired me and said, ‘Good luck’ and left,” Dean said. Instead, Basiel remained on the board. Basiel started her engagement with DMYFS back when See Basiel / Page 3

her children participated in some programs. When she felt that her suggestions fell on deaf ears, she decided, “You know what? If I really want to make some changes, it’s time to join the board. That’s what motivated me.” She also serves as a mentor to officers of the local 4-H Club, which is run by students. The 4-H Club is primarily known for the annual fair on the Durham Fairgrounds. “The fair is completely run by the kids themselves, but they need adults to mentor them.” Basiel also serves as the group’s treasurer. When she talks about 4-H, Basiel is always quick to mention that the organization has more activities than the fair and farming, including archery, dance, and robotics. “The list is endless,” Basiel said. “The fair is what helps promote the kids in their leadership roles, which is what 4-H is about.” Although she is not, as she puts it, “an official member”

of PALS, the booster group for the Durham Public Library, Basiel is a reliable volunteer for the organization, helping to decorate the library for the annual Taste of Durham. Basiel has been on the committee for the Farmers Market, as she puts it, “for a number of years, I don’t know, maybe five.” “I have a big interest in supporting local farmers and eating locally,” Basiel said. Merrill Adams of CVEF presented the award to Basiel. Although she knew about the award since November, the presentation ceremony was still special. “It was one of the most wonderful evenings of my life. To be acknowledged and recognized by the community was tremendous for me.” Basiel becomes the fifth winner of the award. As described by the CVEF, “Among our past recipients are Christine Willett, who created After the Storm to benefit women diagnosed with breast cancer; Susan Michael, high school science teacher and

The Coginchaug girls basketball team opened their 2015-16 campaign with two difficult losses to two rather strong teams. Hosting Cromwell on Tuesday, Dec. 15, the Devils’ 22 turnovers did them in, with many of them leading directly to Cromwell scores in a 60-21 Panthers win. Elena Beckert led the Devils with six points and Larissa Cade added five. Cromwell’s two post players, Mya Villard and Geanna Williams, led Cromwell with 12 and 10 points, respectively. On Friday, Dec. 18, the Coginchaug girls traveled to North Haven, where 14 points from Cade and 11 from Beckert were not enough to overcome 20 from Julia Puzone and 10 from Marissa Thomas of North Haven. I know that you are working on a deadline, and you may have taken up nail-biting and hair-pulling (your own) by now, but I wonder if I could have your attention for a moment. Your song, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” has me worried about a couple of things. You (or somebody) start off by admonishing us not to cry or pout. I’ve been known to do both. Santa, I really am trying to be a stellar human being, but sometimes the going is slow. I’ve always been a pouter, although I think I have made great strides in this department over the years. I thought that if my face hung low enough, thus making my distress visible to all those concerned (and even those not concerned), I would invoke their compassion and get my way. For the record, this does not work. I see that you’re checking your list twice (I know, you really can’t be too careful in these matters) to see who’s naughty or nice. What, exactly, is the criteria? Admittedly, I could be a bit better about picking up litter when I am out and about on my daily walks. Sometimes I do take to complaining, and I’m really working on that. But on the plus side, I let drivers cut in front of me, I hold doors open for people, and I am truly pleasant to everyone I encounter. And I am kind to animals. Very kind. So how far back do you go with this naughty or nice business? There have been some incidents in the past that I imagine put me in the red. Like in the eighth grade when my friend and I would walk into town after school to buy an ice cream cone, and I would eat mine

with lightning speed so that I could chase her all around and get hers. Or when this same friend (isn’t she amazing to have stuck with me?) and I were teenagers driving around in her convertible, and she went through a red light, and was pulled over immediately by a police officer, who let her off when she started crying. And I promised not to tell on her if she bought me two ice cream sundaes. I’m wondering if there is a statue of limitations on this sort of thing, so that perhaps my slate has been wiped clean. It’s not much of a defense, but I was young, and I really like ice cream. Now this next part of the song really has my knickers in a knot. We are told that you see us when we’re sleeping. To be frank, I don’t know why you have to keep an eye on us at such times. I am neither naughty nor nice then. I’m sleeping, and therefore am not inclined to either behaving badly or doing random acts of kindness. I think you can take your eye off the ball here, Santa. For one thing, I don’t think I’m an attractive sleeper, and I would prefer that you don’t see me like this. My cats are way too kind to mention it, but I believe I sleep with my mouth wide open, and I snore. And my attire is – well, it’s not there at all. So if you are going to continue with this questionable habit, I feel that I must buy some lovely lingerie, and perhaps tape my mouth shut. Oh, but Santa, your voyeur tendencies aside, we have had fun over the years, haven’t we? I remember sitting See Carr / Page 9

Race of registration fees to races, which are usually run by civic or charitable organizations. Go Far has been active in Regional School District 13 since 2005 with a recess run program for grades K-6 encouraging students, through running, to set goals and track their accomplishments. When the new owners bought Powder Ridge, Hayes said that their intention was to use the mountain as often as possible for other sports and activities outside of skiing and snowboarding. Another race is on the Powder Ridge calendar, according to Hayes. On June 19, 2016, Powder Ridge will host the CT Cycling Advancement Program’s annual combination event of downhill, road, and cross country cycling races. After that, downhill mountain bike trails will open on the mountain.

Members of the CRHS indoor track team took part in the race. put together a family race. I thought Christmas would be the best time to do this.” The Jingle All the Way 5K attracted 344 official runners who started at Powder Ridge Ski Park, left the property through the long driveway, took a right to go up the steep incline of Powder Hill Road past signs that said things like “Santa knows if you’ve been training,” turned around on top of the hill, and finished back at the ski resort. Aleksandr Morin of Durham became the first ever first place finisher of the race. Morin said that the first half of the race was challenging. “The grade is more than a typical 5K,” Morin said. A 5K course, the equivalent of 3.1 miles, is a standard distance for many runners. Colby Jennings of Branford, Morin’s former roommate and fellow runner at Sacred Heart University, agreed that the hill was substantial but said it meant that the out and back course had “a good fast finish.” The course, which includes two Middlefield landmarks in Powder Ridge and the orchards of Lyman Orchards, provided the runners with attractive winter views. “You’re surrounded by it,” Morin said of the scenery. Schulten said, “I’ve done a lot of races and there are very few with a view like that.” According to Schulten, many memorable courses have a substantial challenge and Powder Hill Road’s steep hill fit that bill. There were several advantages to the course’s out-andback layout. It reduced the amount of road taken up by runners. Powder Hill Road was not closed for the event, although the residents were warned. It also provided a halfway station for Santa to highfive runners. The layout also meant that younger or slower runners could see the older or faster runners coming back down the hill. According to Schulten, this could provide inspiration for the less speedy. “Wow, I want to do that!” Schulten imagined some of them thinking. Morin and Jennings were early finishers of the race, but all of the runners were cheered

on and, in Go Far tradition, younger or tentative participants were matched up with mentors or, for this race, “mentor elves.” Powder Ridge owner Sean Hayes noted the mix of older and younger runners and said of the event, “We’re very excited about it and love to see the kids and all the new runners. We hope it becomes an annual event.” A day after the race, Schulten noted the healthy turnout and happy participants and said, “I think I’m going to have a hard time not doing it again.” Many of the participants were familiar local runners, often seen at Go Far events, Coginchaug track and cross country meets, and the Washington Trial 5K/10K. Several runners from a group called the Run 169 Towns Society, whose members aim to run a race in all 169 Connecticut towns, used the Jingle All the Way 5K to check Middlefield off their list. Katy Baruth, a member of the group, traveled from Naugatuck with her bulldog, Piper, for the race, but used it as a walk. “The bulldog doesn’t want to take on those hills,” Baruth said. By pursuing their own fun goal, Baruth said, members of the Run 169 Towns Society provide a lot of funds in the form

on your lap every year, and you asking me if I’ve been a good little girl. I always said yes, but really, I had my doubts. Again, what’s the criteria? But you did not disappoint. You brought me sleds and flying saucers and skates. True, I didn’t get the pony. But no hard feelings. I think you would have had a hard time trying to keep that pony in your sleigh. I don’t think they like to fly. So Santa, if you think I’ve been good more often than not this year, I look forward to your visit. The chimney is clean, so no worries there. You shouldn’t have any problem shimmying down it. I know that, as a kid, I left you milk and cookies. But you’re not getting any younger, my friend, and I am a bit worried about your cholesterol levels. So you will have to make-do with a hefty portion of kale with olive oil drizzled over it. And as for what to bring me? Surprise me! Your Biggest Fan (I get points for that, right?) Diana Diana Carr, a resident of Durham, is a certified life coach who was trained by Martha Beck. Michael Skelps, of Middlefield, was inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame in a ceremony presided over by Gov. Dannel Malloy on Nov. 30. Skelps is a veteran of the U.S. Navy. The Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame was established by former governor Jodi Rell in 2005 to recognize the contributions of veterans after their military service. According to the state’s website, “Those selected for the honor of induction are veterans who honorably served their country through military service and who continue to serve and inspire their fellow man with their deeds and accomplishments throughout their lifetime.” Currently, there are just over 100 members of the hall, including former President George Herbert Walker Bush. Skelps has been a member of the Lions organization since 2006 and currently serves as Vice President of the Middlefield Lions. He has also been honored with the Lion of the Year award in 2012 and the organization’s Ambassador of Sight award. Skelps said he believes he was also nominated because he is a business owner and has been an advocate for patent law reform.
