SUPER SCOUT

Tyler Hall, Life Scout of Troop 270 in Durham, presented his Eagle Project to Nancy Heckler, principal of Brewster School recently. His project included a 100-foot paved path for children to run on for Go Far, two Buddy Benches for the playground, and an 8-foot picnic table to be used for an outdoor classroom.

Local publishes book of ‘Everyday Things’ By Mark Dionne Town Times

Those who know Durham’s Diana Carr, author of the recently-published book “Everyday Things,” know it is hard to keep her inside. One of the jobs she held before becoming the Town Times’ columnist had her working inside an office building, which, Carr said, “didn’t go well.” For her first writing job 28 years ago at the now-defunct Durham Gazette, Carr ran an extension cord from her house to a picnic table so she could work outside at her electric typewriter. Carr is sometimes known locally as

“the Barefoot Woman” for the shoeless walks she takes along Durham roads. “Most people do know me that way,” the writer acknowledged. Sometimes people who meet her are excited about meeting “the Barefoot Woman,” which surprises Carr, who said she goes without shoes in order to feel free and connected to the earth. “I just took off my shoes, is all!” That kind of down-to-earth attitude, which is made literal during her barefoot walks, informs Carr’s weekly Town Times column called, “It’s All Good.” Carr collected more than a year’s See Carr / Page 2

New Perk on Main is brewing By Mark Dionne Town Times

Longtime Durham fixture Perk on Main will soon open its third location, bringing the crepes, coffee, and sensibility Perk patrons have come to expect to 344 Main St. in Middletown. The small storefront, located on the southern end of downtown Main Street near the MAT station, was an existing restaurant in the past, but has been unused for months. “The building is really charming, a lot of brick,” said Perk on Main owner and Durham resident Katie Hughes. “And the copper ceiling, which I think is faux, is still really pretty.” Hughes closed on the building at the end of December and said of the facility, “It’s not ready to go right now, but the infrastructure is there.”

Perk on Main opened in Durham in 2002. The restaurant moved once within the Durham Village shops and also expanded in 2010 to include Guilford’s Perk on Church, and launched a food truck, Perk on Wheels, in 2014. “We started from scratch twice,” said Hughes. “There’s a lot of work associated with starting from scratch.” Hughes said they underestimated the amount of work required to open the second Perk restaurant, Perk on Church in Guilford. “I feel like [now] we have a pretty good idea of exactly what we need to do.” One of the challenges facing Perk on Main Middletown is figuring out how to incorporate spots like the bakery cases, counter, and coffee station into the flow of the narrower space. Hughes expects the other work, like See Perk / Page 15

Carr worth of those columns for the book “Everyday Things: A Year of Reflection on Just About Everything.” “I’ve always wanted to write a book. It was something in me that needed to be birthed,” Carr said, but something always stopped her. “It might have been a lack of confidence – ‘Who am I to write a book?’” Then she realized that while writing a book seemed like a giant task, writing columns did not. Carr said she never strug-

gles to find a column topic or to write the columns. “I don’t think about it at all. It’s like a magical thing for me. The words come to me, like I’m not even writing it, which a lot of people wouldn’t understand,” Carr said. “It’s All Good” started in October of 2014 with a Halloween column and Carr continued writing over the next year about everyday topics like overgrown yards, Christmas trees, and life in Sweden, where she has family. Olivia Lawrence, one of Carr’s editors at the Meriden Record-Journal, encouraged Carr to publish and said, “It’s great to see that Diana pulled her weekly columns together in one volume. Her perspective on everyday life is so well illustrated in her writing. She’s light-hearted in her approach, but the topics and experience make you stop and think.” Feedback from other readers who appreciated Carr’s sense of humor also gave her confidence to collect her columns in book form. According to Carr, reading one of her columns is like sitting with her for a cup of tea and a conversation about “everyday stuff ” and not the “big questions.” In addition to her work at the Durham Gazette, Carr

also did freelance work at Haddam’s Hometown Journal, The Shoreline Times, and the Middletown Press before starting with the Town Times as a reporter in September of 2010. Of all the newspaper work, Carr said doing a column “is the most fun ever.” On working with Carr, Lawrence said, “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve opened up a submitted column and moments later found myself laughing along with Diana and her dilemmas. She often surprises me - in the good way.” Carr self-published the book through Amazon and found the process very smooth. “Everyday Things” is available through Amazon in kindle and paperback editions. While Carr resists the idea that there is a grander theme at work in “Everyday Things,” she said readers may come away with an idea, which Carr summed up as, “Life is really a hoot. When you just start looking at everything around you, you realize how miraculous it all is and it’s really a lot of fun.” Carr plans to continue “It’s All Good” and wants to collect more columns in future annual editions. She found the work on “Everyday Things” so smooth, she also wants to start a book separate from her columns. “I don’t know yet what it’s going to be but it’s going to crawl into my head. I trust the process,” Carr said. Whatever form the non-column book takes, Carr said it is likely to be non-fiction and humorous. No surprise there.

Water system, jobs study, celebrations discussed By Mark Dionne

Town Times

The Middlefield Board of Selectmen, at their regular meeting on Jan. 4, reviewed several on-going concerns in town, although they were in a period of waiting with most of them. Progress has been made with the detailing of the job descriptions of town employees, according to Middlefield First Selectman Ed Bailey. Middlefield has hired Randi Frank, a consultant operating out of Wallingford, to conduct a job and salary study. The BOS members said they expected detailed and accurate job descriptions to be helpful when replacing employees, dealing with worker’s compensation issues, and enforcing accountability. The first portion has been completed and job descriptions will be handed to town employees in the first part of January for further comment.

“Once that’s finalized, the salary study will begin,” Bailey said. The job and salary study is expected to cost $13,500. The town is in a holding pattern waiting to get a proposal from a cell tower sales consultant. Middlefield is considering proposals to sell the lease on the cell tower behind Town Hall and has considered hiring a consultant to help get the best deal. The selectmen reviewed the progress of the ownership question hovering over the Rainbow Springs Water System, which is a privately owned water system in Middlefield serving eight properties. The owner is in the process of relinquishing the water rights, which the Department of Public Health could assign to the town of Middlefield. Should the town end up taking over the old water system, it would have to be repaired and maintained and a rate

would have to be calculated for the property owners. According to Bailey, two of the property owners plan to install their own private wells. The first selectman and other town officials plan to meet with the residents. “If they install wells, it will be the cheaper option in the long run,” Bailey said. In September of 2015, Middlefield gave an official response to inquiries from the Department of Health, which asked how Middlefield would provide water service if ordered.

The town’s written response was, “Because the town does not have the experience, financial resources, or inclination to provide water as a water company, a discontinuance of the service would be undertaken and those served by the existing system would have to provide their own water.” Two events are in place for the town’s sesquicentennial and were reviewed by the selectmen. The Sesquicentennial Committee, formed to celebrate the town’s 150th birthday in June, 2016, has planned

a Winter Festival for Saturday, Jan. 23 and a Gala Ball for Saturday, Jan. 30. The BOS voted to enter into a purchase agreement with a group of other towns, led by Essex, to pursue grant money for, as described by the motion, “the creation of a multi-site UHF simulcast system to provide enhanced communications for our rural volunteer firefighters.” The BOS selected Tuesday, Jan. 19, which is also a BOS meeting date, as a Town Meeting for the purposes of voting to accept any funds resulting from the agreement.

Financial Risks & Investor Attitudes, found that many U.S. investors allow their feelings about risk to influence their investment behavior in ways that are detrimental to their financial goals. Three risk profiles illustrate how attitudes can trip up the best investment intentions. 1. Avoiding risk at all costs For example: A retiree receives a monthly income from Social Security and a generous pension. His combined income has been sufficient to meet expenses and his lifestyle, so he hasn’t had to dip into his savings. Despite his financial comfort, he is only comfortable investing in assets that provide a fixed return or allow him See Jolly / Page 12

Next to my bed I have a little green Buddha figurine that glows in the dark. He’s such a cheery fellow, all round and grinning from ear to ear. He comforts me. I wake up in the middle of the night – several times, actually – and it’s dark as tar, and I am perhaps trying to disentangle myself from some weird dream. I am disoriented, and the night does not feel like such a friendly thing. But then I see my happy little Buddha standing guard, a beacon of light in the wee hours, and it feels like all is right with the world as I slip back into Dreamland. I take Buddha with me when I visit my boys. I love visiting my boys, but when I lay my head down on my pillow at night, I feel a tinge of homesickness. I miss my bed and I miss my kitties, and I am far away from both. So Buddha is my piece of home. Buddha makes me feel safe again. And apparently my Swedish grandson, 5-year-old Hayden, shares my penchant for the guy. On my last visit I gave him my Buddha, purely on a whim. That’s how much I love Hayden! Little did I know how over-the-moon happy this would make him. He wrapped his little hand around his new friend, and at first he would not let go. Which made it a little difficult to get his mittens on. When we went into town, he had Buddha in his pocket. When we got back home, he put Buddha on the coffee table in front of him while he played. He took Buddha to bed with him. (I believe we have started a family tradition here!) And when he somehow lost him, he searched frantically around the apartment, searching everywhere, under the couch, behind doors, calling “Buuuddddaaa.” He found

no peace until the little green man was back in his sights. And now this has become Hayden’s and my “thing.” I bought another Buddha for myself as soon as I got home, and I keep my grandson well-supplied, too. I send him two at a time, in case one just decides to up and leave (You should always have a spare Buddha, right?) Hayden and I Skype, and he only speaks Swedish and I only speak English, but it appears that we have stumbled upon a common language. “How’s Buddha?” I ask him. And he grins and says “Buddha” with such fervor that I have no doubt that his love affair with our mutual friend continues. I even bought a goodsized Buddha that sits on my living room floor, because it makes me feel connected to my grandson. Really, it’s our thing. So when I go to bed at night, with my little green glowing figurine on the end table next to me, I say, “Good night, Buddha. Good night, Hayden.” Owing to the sixhour time difference, and the fact that he is only five, our bedtimes are not synchronized, but I like to imagine that Hayden, when he snuggles into his bed, with his little green guy next to him, says, “Good night, Buddha. Good night, Grandma.” And somehow it doesn’t feel like there are quite as many miles between my little Swede and me. the last market downturn, they redistributed their portfolios to hold only low-risk investments. Are you like this couple, quick to react to external events without considering the long-term? A balanced portfolio can help you weather bumps in the market that tend to even out over time. Your financial advisor can help you employ a consistent strategy that periodically rebalances your assets to align to your investment goals and time horizon. 3. Investing beyond your capacity to withstand losses For example: A middle-aged single architect earns a good living but has difficulty setting aside funds for the future. She enjoys researching and investing in startup ventures in the technology sector. She admits to investing in long shots, hoping to hit the jackpot. Investing in high-risk investments when you have limited assets or a short time horizon is asking for trouble. If you are tempted to take bigger risks than your portfolio can withstand, enlist a financial professional to help you maintain a more disciplined approach to investing. Find balance and opportunity in risk If you relate to any of the three scenarios above, your risk tolerance may be preventing you from reaching your investment goals. An experienced financial advisor can help you arrive at investment decisions based on financial principles rather than emotions. Together you can factor in your assets, time horizon and capacity to manage losses as you select investments with the best chance of generating optimal returns. of the Kickstarter campaign, a post on Perk on Main’s facebook page said that “with each pledge, we feel you saying ‘we think you can!’ and it raises us up.” When the announcement went out about a new Perk on Main, Hughes got questions about leaving Durham. “We will never leave Durham,” she said. “It’s such a healthy business, it’s a great loca-

tion, and it’s a beautiful spot. We’ve put tons into it ... we succeed in this because the people of Durham have been so loyal and wonderful. We’re staying.” Hughes, who won the Small Business Association’s Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year Award for Connecticut in 2015, said she feels confident in a March opening for Perk on Main Middletown.

Hughes wants Perk on Main Middletown prepared for “the honeymoon period,” the post-opening support a new restaurant gets from a community. The new, smaller restaurant will likely run with 3-4 person shifts with two shifts per day, compared to up to 7 or 8 workers on a shift at the larger Durham location. Hughes has not finalized the menu for the Middletown store. She said it will feature the expected crepes and coffee, but may also have some different options. Perk on Main is also known for its environmental efforts and community involvement. Hughes is frequently Tanya Bottaro Sherri Ahern 860.301.9102 approached by 860.687.7194 businesses looking to learn about sound environmental practices and has been invited to speak on the topic. Hughes has already given talks with Kim O’Rourke, Middletown’s recycling coordinator, and expects to strengthen a connection with Middletown businesses and citizens. Perk on Main is also a frequent meeting spot for groups and organizations, like the monthly “First Cup’s on Us!” coffee meeting of the Local Wellness Council, and Hughes is a regular presence at other civic events, like the Taste of Durham. “I think we will match up well with the philosophy

idea what to expect and has built connections that will help get questions answered and move projects forward. The new location was announced with a Kickstarter campaign to help with cash flow during the expansion. Gifts and “perks” were attached to the Kickstarter donations.
