State of athletics reported to school board By Mark Dionne
Town Times
A presentation by Coginchaug Regional High School Athletic Director Nick Barbieri at the Board of Education’s Jan. 13 meeting detailed the progress made by CRHS athletics since a Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference review. That CIAC reviewed CRHS athletics during the 2012-13 school year and submitted commendations and recommendations to the district in the early spring of 2014. The review, which was voluntary, was requested after complaints and concerns were expressed

Barbieri said that improvements had been made in that area, citing a handbook for student-athletes, preseason team and parent meetings, a “Captains Council” for CRHS team captains, and web pages for each team. The handbook is new this year and online only. Some of the new procedures were specific to coaches, including coaching guidelines, preseason meetings with the athletic director, and postseason head coach and assistant coach evaluations.
The string of parties and events recognizing Middlefield’s sesquicentennial in 2016 starts with a Winter Festival at Lake Beseck Beach on Saturday, Jan. 23. Middlefield became its own town in 1866. Previously, it was part of Middletown. Planning for the 150th anniversary of that began in 2014 with town officials, volunteers, and a committee dedicated solely to the celebration. While the main part of that recognition will take part in June, coinciding with Old Home Days, then-First Se-
lectman Jon Brayshaw and Sesquicentennial Committee co-chairs Taryn Ruffino and Chris Hurlbert have always planned for a string of events. Amy Poturnicki, Lake Beseck Association president, said that the LBA was asked to put on two events for the celebration and picked a Winter Festival as one, even though winter events have had a mixed record. Poturnicki said the attitude was, “Let’s try it again. It’ll be fun.” Snow and ice games are part of the planning. Participants are invited to bring show shoes and sleds for bowling pin sledding, and See Festival / Page 17

The Coginchaug Area Transition team held a soup swap at Perk on Main in Durham recently to promote community, discuss ideas for the future, and exchange some homemade food. CAT is a citizens group formed almost three years ago to promote sustainable practices and community building. Transition groups, which are operating across the country, attempt to connect impassioned individuals and dedicated groups for specific, local projects such as creating bike paths and forming classes to promote sewing, farming and other utilitarian skills. “Our mission is to create a more sustainable community,” CAT member Sue VanDerzee said. “By inviting people to come and share soup, you’re already building community.” About 10 people cycled through the evening soup swap on a cold night. “Winter and soup seem to go together,” said VanDerzee. “We thought it’s January, it’s soup, let’s do something different.”

Not that it was a contest, but Kathy Weber of Middlefield brought the most soup, with six quarts of curried butternut and apple soup. Opinion Spring is in the air, kind of I always put off taking down my Christmas tree, because I love it so. But today is the day. I took a gander at it this morning, and I believe it’s feeling a bit under the weather. It has definitely lost its glow, and I’m sure it wants nothing more than to retire. This is usually a sad occasion for me, but I am determined to keep my chin up by thinking about all the treasures that lie ahead. Yes, it’s cold and dark. And I must wear shoes at this time of the year, which can really dampen my spirits. But have you noticed how the days are getting longer? And quickly, it seems. I tend to keep a daily tally of the moment that the night moves in, and I think we are now up to 5:15, or thereabouts. (I’ll be really happy when the daylight moves in earlier. Getting up when it is still pitch dark just seems wrong.) Every day that goes by brings us closer to the sun. We can feel it. And I really like being close to the sun. And then we have Valentine’s Day. And although I have no sweetie patootie lurking in the background (that probably is for the best; the lurking thing never bodes well), I get caught up in all the excitement. Like the song says, love is in the air. And who could not love, well, love? Besides, it gives me an excuse to dive head first into the chocolate. As if I need an excuse! St. Patrick’s Day is always a hoot, too. I do not have a drop of Irish blood in me, but my heart is Irish. For some reason I have always
been fascinated by the Emerald Isle. I finally got there one year after a visit with my son in Sweden, and it did not disappoint. When I got home, I missed it for months. So my Irish heart gets to kick up its heels on St. Paddy’s Day. Speaking of kicking up my heels – learning how to Riverdance has been on my to-do list for eons. But at this stage of the game I’m not sure I could even get my knees pointing in the same direction, and I’m pretty sure that’s one of the requirements. Oh, and let’s not forget the most wonderful event of all. Yep, my birthday. March 29 (I’ll wait right here while you go mark it on your calendar.) No sooner has Christmas evaporated into thin air than I am making plans for Birthday Month. That’s right – I celebrate all month. One day could never be enough for me. I’m thinking I need to do something along the lines of spectacular this year, in order to nudge me out of my comfort zone, which has become so small it is barely visible. I pass a float tank every week on the way to my health food store, and I toy with the idea. The website promises peace and tranquility, and I’d like me some of that. This will, however, take some
courage on my part, as I would be floating around in a small, dark room, and that would just be such fertile ground for that hint of claustrophobia I’ve been sporting all my life. I have considered doing a zip line. Not crazy about heights, though. You know, tea with a friend is starting to sound pretty good. Okay, enough about me. Let’s see, where was I? Oh yes, things we can all look forward to. I’m sure I don’t have to remind you how absolutely awesome the “first times” are: hearing the birds singing under our window, turning off the heat and flinging open the windows, tossing the jacket to the back of the closet, going for a walk after supper because the night has finally retreated, stepping out your back door and inhaling those wildflowers, going barefoot (you knew it was coming!). And every breath we take is drawing us closer to all that magnificence. Okay, now let’s go give that tree a proper burial. Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano.
Politicians place blame for GE’s exit Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano and state Sen. Tony Hwang, who represents the town of Fairfield, released the following statements regarding reports that General Electric has decided to move its headquarters to Boston. This move comes after GE raised concerns about the direction Connecticut leaders were taking the state during the 2015 legislative session which included the passage of the second largest tax hike in state history. This prompted General Electric Chairman & CEO Jeff Immelt to consider moving because GE wanted to be some place “where people support job creation, where it’s attractive to talent, good cost of living and that is very supportive in terms of what a high-tech exporter has to be all about. It is a global battle that we are in and we need people that are on our side,” said Immelt in September. “This news is devastating for thousands of employees, their families, and the entire Fairfield community,” said Fasano (R-North Haven). “I know our community is strong,” said Hwang (R-Fairfield). “I know we will all work hard with one another to build back what we are losing. I know we will come together to support the employees losing their jobs, the local companies that will lose business, and the many
nonprofits and community organizations that benefited from having GE’s headquarters as a major philanthropic force in our town. GE is an incredible economic driver, and the jobs that do remain here will continue to benefit our community and support many families. I plan to work closely with all lawmakers as well as state and local leaders to ensure Connecticut is taking the steps we need to grow jobs, support the community, and create an environment where businesses want to move in, not out.” People Deserve Apologies & Action “The people of Connecticut deserve an apology,” said Fasano. “They deserve an apology from every Democrat lawmaker whose disrespectful comments mocked companies like GE when they raised legitimate concerns about the state budget. These same Democrats then had to backtrack, after they forced legislation upon companies without listening to them or even having a conversation about their perspective. “They deserve an apology from every elected state leader who blamed critics for ‘rooting for failure,’ ‘perpetuating hyperbole,’ and spewing ‘static’ and ‘bologna’ when people rightfully warned about the disastrous impact See GE / Page A9

through Friday, Jan. 29 to observe classes and to discuss questions or concerns. The visits, which are designed for adults, must be scheduled ahead of time to allow for optimum opportunities to observe the programs. To schedule an appointment, call Lyman school at 860-349-7240 to visit the Integrated Day Program. To visit the Contemporary Program, call Brewster school at 860-349-7227. Kindergarten registration for the 2016-2017 school year is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 2, through Thursday, Feb. 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, extended to 6 p.m. one evening. Children should attend the registration appointment. Any parent of an eligible kindergarten child who wishes to hold his/her child out of school for another year must sign a form at the Office of the Superintendent of Schools.
of repeated tax increases and perpetual state deficits. “They deserve an apology from Hartford Democrats who had blinders on when they celebrated a budget they were ‘proud of,’ a budget they called ‘historic’ and ‘transformative’ when in actuality it did nothing to change the trajectory of the state. “They deserve an apology from those who accused GE of ‘fear-mongering’ and blaming Connecticut policies for their own corporate decisions. “Even more than apologies, our state deserves action. I hope that if any good can come from this situation, Democrats can now find the courage to change. GE made their decision because they, like so many other employers and state residents, are sick and tired of the unpredictability of Connecticut’s financial health, and how that volatility translates to knee jerk tax hikes and damaging service cuts. Years of one party rule and Democrat policies have created an environment that lacks stability and predictability. That uncertainty leaves people wondering: where will leaders go next to find the money to fix future budget holes? Who wants to invest in a state if they can’t
be certain they won’t be the next group squeezed in tough times?” Fasano said. Hwang added: “Democrat leaders created a fire by ignoring the negative impact of their policies over the last five years. They stoked the flames this year when they passed the second largest tax increase in state history. While some business tax changes were eventually made to the budget, it was like throwing a cup of water on a house fire. The only way to move forward is to
make serious changes to the way our state budgets. If we want to send a positive message to job creators, then we need long-term structural changes. This year’s budget was not transformative, and the legislation passed in special session did nothing to make long-term structural changes to the way our state spends its money. GE shows us more clearly now than ever that change is needed. Democrats can no longer be afraid to change.” — Press Release

Sports Coginchaug Little League tryouts on Jan.31 league is for ages 9 to 12 years old, by Aug. 31, 2016. All players interested in playing in the 2016 Majors Division, and who were not on a Majors team last spring, must try out again. Those who tried
out in the June 2015 tryout are not required to try out again, but are welcome to do so. Bring sneakers, baseball glove and helmet. For more information, contact Joe Fournier, boys majors director, at jfournier@jeflegal.com or John Kelly, player agent, at jpk151@gmail.com. Minor league tryouts Coginchaug Little League has scheduled winter tryouts for Little League Boys Minors Baseball for Sunday, Jan. 31, 11 a.m., at Lake Grove Gym,
Middlefield. The league is for ages 8 to 11 years old, by Aug. 31, 2016. All “A” players from 2015 who are interested in playing in the “AA” or “AAA” Minors Division during 2016 must try out. All “league age” 7 boys that played Tee-Ball in 2015 will automatically be placed on a “A” level team. Bring sneakers, baseball glove and helmet. For more information, contact Andy Kleczkowski, boys minors director, at andy7696@
aol.com or John Kelly, player agent, at jpk151@gmail.com. Note regarding age levels: In the fall of 2015, Little League International adjusted the age structure for baseball divisions. Players that are 11 or older should see no noticeable changes. For players 10 or younger, the age cutoff date for each “league age” is Aug. 31. Check the actual age chart for baseball at www.coginchaugll.org. There have been no changes in the softball age chart.
Coginchaug Little League registration Coginchaug Little League is accepting online registration for the spring 2016 baseball and softball season. A fee is charged. Registration is open for Minors, Majors baseball and softball, and 50-70 baseball levels. All players that will be “league age” 7-13 during the
2016 spring season may register. Coginchaug Little League is open to all residents of Durham, Middlefield and Rockfall, and all age-appropriate players that attend a school within those towns (Independent Day School.) The programs offer baseball levels of Tee-Ball (boys
and girls), Minors (A, AA and AAA divisions), Majors and Intermediate (50-70) and softball levels of Farm, Minors, Majors and Juniors. Registrations for these levels after Jan. 31 will be subject to a late fee. For more information, visit www.coginchaugll.org.

snow art remains a possibility. Ice fishing on site, which is unlikely given the forecast, was also part of the original vision. Most of the Winter Festival, however, is not dependent on snow. Members of CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will lead a fishing workshop between 10 a.m. and noon focusing on fishing education, casting, ice fishing and tools. The Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department will show ice and water rescue techniques at 1 p.m. The ice carving demonstrations, using about six 300-pound blocks of ice, will go on with or without freezing temperatures. One of those ice sculptures will be a frame recognizing Middlefield’s 150th birthday. Poturnicki said she hopes families and civic groups get their pictures taken in the frame as part of the town’s birthday. A dog costume contest and parade, for leashed dogs, will provide more opportunities for photos and laughs. Registration for the contest will be at 2 p.m. Regardless of the conditions, there will be snow, courtesy of two snow guns brought in for the event. The Winter Festival, which was arranged by both the Lake Beseck Association and Middlefield Parks and Recreation, will include hay rides, a bird feeder-building workshop for kids, and a photo booth. “Our target audience is families,” Poturnicki said. DJ Craig Orosz will provide music. Anyone who gets cold can head to a fire pit or a warming station or drink some hot chocolate. For those who get hungry, a food truck from Smokin’ Skulls BBQ will be on site. All of the activities, except for the food truck,
are free. A percentage of the food truck proceeds will be donated to the sesquicentennial celebration. After dark, festival-goers will enjoy a full moon rise over the lake. With a telescope on site, Poturnicki said, “Kids can look at the craters on the moon.” Also, shoreline residents will be asked to help “light up the lake” for the festival, which runs until 7 p.m. More information, and updates, can be found at the Lake Beseck Living website, http://lakebeseckliving.com. Founded in 1866, Middlefield celebrates its 150th birthday in 2016.

another CIAC recommendation, were listed as initiatives for 2016-17. Barbieri said, “It’s not about stepping on people’s toes, it’s about defining responsibilities. The parents groups are about getting hoodies, and t-shirts and the care packages. It’s up to the Benchwarmers to support the whole program or those big ticket items.” Trying to increase participation in meetings and surveys and promoting the handbook were also listed as future challenges. “It’s a lot of information,” Barbieri acknowledged.
In the future, CRHS may expand the sports offerings and turn boys’ swimming, currently a participation program called “Team of One” with Lyman Hall, into a full-fledged co-op sport like ice hockey and gymnastics, which joins Coginchaug with other high schools to field full teams. Barbieri said that the number of sports offerings, including 19 varsity programs, was a “selling point” for the district. Veronesi thanked Barbieri for creating in athletics “a culture that is aligned with the culture of the district. That has been a yeoman’s job.”
“It comes down to a lot of meetings that we’re having. There’s meetings in the beginning of the year as a department and then we have team meetings,” Barbieri said. Coaches are involved from both CRHS and Strong Middle School and, in addition to things like concussion and cardiac arrest awareness, are instructed to follow guidelines. Barbieri said, “A season is about three months long. Once we get started it’s pretty fast and pretty intense, so there are guidelines that break the season into five parts ... to help coaches pace themselves with the responsibilities they have and the important deadlines we have as we move through the regular season, the Shoreline conferences, and the CIAC” tournaments. Unified sports, recommended by the CIAC, has also begun at CRHS. Unified sports integrate special needs students onto soccer, basketball, bowling, volleyball, and track teams to practice with partner athletes and compete with other Unified sports teams. Barbieri called Unified sports one of the biggest accomplishments since the CIAC Dr. William Boylin, Ph.D report. Family Therapist Unified sports coach Robert Bajoros said, “It’s been a Specializing in: great personal experience for me.” Bajoros relayed the expeSubstance Abuse rience of participants who said Teenagers that this was the first time they had ever been part of a team.
