Powder Ridge restaurants expected to reopen Establishments were ordered shut down last week By Mark Dionne Town Times
Powder Ridge’s two restaurants were expected to reopen Wednesday after the ski resort was ordered by the town to cease operation of the restaurants last week. On Friday, Middlefield’s building official Robert Meyers issued an order to cease operations for both Fire at the Ridge and Ridgeside Tavern, less than a week after they opened. “We had a successful launch,” said Powder Ridge owner Sean Hayes. “We thought we had everything behind us.” The sprinkler system re-
mains unf inished at the restaurants, but Deputy State Building Inspector Dan Tierney signed off on a plan to allow the eateries to operate. In order to open on Jan. 19, Powder Ridge used a fire watch, which consists of two members of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department being present whenever the restaurants are open. Powder Ridge compensated the firefighters, according to First Selectman Ed Bailey. Bailey said that the final inspection of the restaurants on Jan. 7 went smoothly. “All the interested parties were there and satisfied,” he said. After a few days, the cease and desist order was issued, Hayes said, adding that his relationship with Meyers “deteriorated.” After the order to cease operations was filed, the fire
department opted not to do a fire watch and weekend dining was canceled. “We canceled two sellout nights and what was going to be the busiest week ever for Powder Ridge,” Hayes said. Reached for comment, Meyers said he had to look into whether he was allowed to comment publicly. Bailey declined to comment about the order closing the restaurants. Bailey said he spoke with state officials and Middlefield councilors as of Monday and saw “no hindrance” to the restaurants reopening. The town’s fire marshal has received the state’s modification approval and plans to resume the fire watch. A message posted on the resort’s Facebook page stated the

Taste of Durham celebrates 20 years Construction and closure returning to Route 147
By Mark Dionne Town Times
The Taste of Durham will hit its 20th anniversary on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Durham Public Library. The event, called a “community party” by organizers in the past, is the Public Association of Library Supporters’ largest fund raiser. To recognize the 20th anniversary, there will be three raffle drawings for restaurant gift certificates. The winners of the drawings will be able to pick a gift card from any restaurant participating in the Taste of Durham. Another raffle will be specifically for an It’s Only Natural gift certificate.
According to Pat Murawski, PALS president, live entertainment is one of the biggest changes the Taste of Durham has seen over the years. Again this year, Bruce Schmottlach will provide piano music on the upper level while Peter Magrane & the Drive-By Blues Band will play on the lower level. In its early years, the Taste of Durham was run by the Library Development Fund, not PALS, to help financially with the two library expansions. PALS took it over more than 10 years ago and uses it to fund programming. Although there have been other changes, such as the addition of a shuttle service to help with parking and changing bar service
to three drink tickets, the Taste of Durham remains mostly unchanged – a gathering of community members and local restaurants to support the library. Perk on Main owner Katie Hughes calls the Taste of Durham one of her favorite nights of the year. “The restaurants that attend go all out, and put out some amazing food. The library is transformed and neighbors and friends, old and new, come together. The mood is always festive,” said Hughes. “The restaurants that attend are also doing a good deed, as all the proceeds from ticket sales benefit the wonderful programs that the Durham Public LiSee Anniversary / Page 2

The bridge over Lyman Meadow Brook on Route 147 in Middlefield will be replaced, with construction beginning in April or May and ending in July or August. Middlefield First Selectman Ed Bailey announced the plan at the Board of Selectmen’s regularly scheduled meeting on Jan. 19. “The project will have a major impact on travel” especially emergency vehicles, Bailey said. For most of the construction period, the road will be reduced to alternating traffic. For a two-week period, the road will be completely blocked, requiring a detour
using routes 147 and 68. That detour, “significant” in Bailey’s view, measures more than seven miles. Detoured traffic will also travel by Strickland Road and Cherry Hill Road. The small bridge is slightly south of the intersection of route 147 and 157 between Lyman Orchards Apple Barrel and the Apple Nine golf course. “It’s similar to what happened with the Coginchaug River [bridge] replacement,” Bailey said. That project, which was just slightly south on Route 147, caused construction related delays for about two years. The Lyman Meadow Brook See Construction / Page 19

Anniversary brary offers.” Murawski said, “We still have the same great people buying tickets and attending.” Participants can expect many returning favorites. According to a PALS press release, “Longtime Durham contributors Cozy Corner Restaurant & Pizza, Durham Market and Caterers, Durham Wine and Spirits, Kim’s Cottage Confections, Lino’s Market and Caterers, Little Rooster Liquors (wine tasting), Perk on Main, and Time Out Taverne are all returning. Returning from Middletown are Brew Bakers Cafe, David Alan Hospitality Group, Fiore II, Haveli India, ION Restaurant, Tschudin Chocolates, and Sweet Harmony Cafe.” Artie’s Bar and Grill will be back with pulled pork, wings, and macaroni and cheese but as Artie’s Bar & Grill/Dakaroo’s Country Kitchen. Lan Chi’s, a Vietnamese restaurant that opened in 2013 on Main Street in Middletown, is a new entry this year. According to the restaurant’s web site, “Lan Chi’s pays tribute to the culinary traditions of southern Vietnam, with an emphasis on spices, freshness, and balance; we like to keep our cuisine simple and different.” Initial plans call for Hachi, a new Japanese restaurant in Middletown, and also a new Taste of Durham participant, to bring sushi to the event.
Time Out Taverne, Lyman Orchards, Cozy Corner, Durham Market, Lino’s, and It’s Only Natural were at the first Taste of Durham and will be at its 20th anniversary edition. Several other restaurants, Murawski noted, also go back a long way with the event. For the first time this year, tickets can be purchased online. Tickets purchased at www. tasteofdurhamct.com will be available at the door without having to make an extra trip to the library. There are a maximum of 350 tickets sold for the event. According to PALS, “The [Taste of Durham] funds raised are used for programs, materials, equipment and
services not included in the town’s library budget.” Upcoming programs supported by PALS include “Dragonology” for children and an Irish music program cosponsored with the Senior Board. PALS also purchases the museum and park passes available at the library. 35430-01

Sports Difficult stretch for boys hoops By Alan Pease Looking at the schedule, it was obvious this would be a tough couple of weeks for the Devils. The Coginchaug boys basketball team was set to square off with the top three teams in the Shoreline Conference: Old Saybrook, Cromwell and Old Lyme, which was tied for third. On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the boys traveled to Old Saybrook to take on the Rams. The locals fell behind early and weren’t able to close the gap before falling, 64-53. The team trailed by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter before some hot shooting in the final four minutes of play brought the deficit back to a respectable number. Kyle Wyskiel led Coginchaug in scoring with 17 points while Cam Powers and Hunter Jameson each scored eight. Jameson led the team in rebounding with six. Jake Sapia grabbed five boards and led the Devils in assists and steals with three of each. On Friday, Jan. 15, the Devils hosted the Panthers of Cromwell. Despite hold-

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Coginchaug High School girls basketball team hosted the Rams of Old Saybrook. After a rather slow start, the Devils stormed back in the second half to come away with a 38-25 victory. Coginchaug completely shut out the Rams in the third quarter, 9-0, and enjoyed a 10-point advantage in the final frame, outscoring Old Saybrook 15-5. Carly Lane and Alana Beckert each scored nine points to lead the team, with Lane also being the top rebounder, with seven. Beckert grabbed four boards and three steals. Bridget Turecek scored eight and grabbed six rebounds, Jessica King scored seven and also grabbed six rebounds, and Amy Arcari scored five and had three steals. For Old Saybrook, Marissa Newell scored nine points. On Friday, Jan. 15, the girls traveled to Cromwell to take on the top-ranked Panthers. Predictably, the game was a rout — and not in a good way — as Cromwell won easily, 62-26. The Devils scored only two points in the first period and trailed 20-2 after the first eight minutes of play. Beckert managed 12 points for the Devils with King adding six. Cromwell had three players score in double digits. On Friday, Jan. 22, the
Coginchaug girls traveled to Old Lyme to take on the Wildcats. The Devils led throughout the contest and finished with a 53-39 win. The local girls jumped out to a 13-7 lead after one period, and held a 25-22 lead at the half. In the third quarter, the Devils pulled away, outscoring the Wildcats 16-4 to take a 41-26 lead into the final frame and coasted home to a 53-39 win. King led Coginchaug
with 18 points and Beckert added 16. Both Larissa Cade and Lane contributed eight points, with the Old Lyme contest being Cade’s first game back from an ankle injury that sidelined her for a couple of weeks. Sloan Sweitzer led the Wildcats with 16 points. The Coginchaug girls are 8-4 and have already qualified for the Class M state tournament. They will host Portland on Friday, Jan. 29.

Major league tryouts Coginchaug Little League has scheduled winter tryouts for Little League Boys Majors Baseball for Sunday,
ing a 38-37 score with four minutes left in the game Coginchaug couldn’t hold off the visitors, falling by a final count of 45-40. The Devils had leads over the Panthers at the close of the first three quarters of the game. Cromwell converted 6-of-8 attempts at the free-throw line down the stretch to steal the victory. Powers was the only double digit scorer for the Devils, with 17 points, and Wyskiel and Jack Murphy each added eight. Murphy was the top rebounder for the Devils with five. On Friday, Jan. 22, the Coginchaug boys hosted the Wildcats from Old Lyme and came away with a convincing 79-63 victory. After the Wildcats were able to creep within five points with under two minutes remaining in the contest, the Devils drained 10-of-13 free throws to bury the Cats. Early on, the Wildcats looked to be on their way to victory as they broke down the Devils’ zone defense and led after the first quarter by five points. A Coginchaug switch to man

Struck in a parking lot You know how messages just fall down from the sky and land in front of you, right when you need them the most? Well, one plopped down before me the other day, and it has left its mark. On this particular day, as I was driving to my health food store, my mind was chewing on an issue that had my knickers in a knot. What to do? What to do? And then it happened. A bit of magic found its way to me that day. As I headed out to the parking lot with my groceries, I noticed a car parked next to mine with a license plate that read “to be.” Nothing else. Just “to be.” Plop! I told the owner of the car, who was on her way into the store, that that message was just what I needed to hear. “That’s our job every day,” she said, “just to be.” And off she went to buy her week’s worth of goodies. I felt like
an earth angel had arrived on the scene, to lift my sagging spirits. My spirits have not sagged since. Billy Shakespeare wrestled with the question eons ago. To be or not to be? It’s big. At first I did not understand the meaning of that fortuitous license plate. But it felt like a Cosmic Nudge, and I thought it would behoove me to decode the message. So here’s what I came up with. Bear with me for a moment, if you would, while I take you for a little stroll through life as I see it, and live it. “Business before
pleasure,” I heard constantly when I was growing up. The early bird catches the worm. God helps those who help themselves. You only get where you want to go if you work hard. Do, do, do. Well, I never really got a firm grip on the “working hard” thing, and I always felt guilty about that, like I was falling short. Oh, I do enough to keep body and soul together, but there always seems to be so many delights in life that are vying for my attention. And it would be rude not to give See Carr / Page 9
Letters to the Editor Greetings from Illinois To the editor: The fourth grade class at Aviston Elementary School, located in southern Illinois, is learning about the United States and the different environments, climates, resources and highlights found in each region. The children in the class think it would be fun to receive postcards, souvenirs, resources or any information about our great country from each of the 50 states. We hope that people read this letter will be interested in mailing our class items pertaining to their state. The address is: Fourth grade@Aviston Elementary, 350 South Hull St., Aviston, Ill 62216. A sincere thank you to anyone who is able to contribute. We appreciate the excitement you will add to our learning experience.

Predictable and disappointing To the editor: Regarding the article on GE leaving Connecticut, I find the State Republicans’ response to be both predictable and disappointing. The following tax statistics are well known and available on Senator Bernie Sander’s web site: From 2008 to 2013, GE made over $33.9 billion in profits in the U.S. while receiving a total tax refund of more than $2.9 billion. Additionally, in 2012, GE stashed $108 billion in offshore tax havens to avoid paying income taxes. If this practice were outlawed, GE would have paid $37.8 billion in federal income taxes that year. During the financial crisis, the Federal Reserve pro-
vided GE with $16 billion in financial assistance, at a time when its CEO Jeffrey Immelt was a director of the New York Federal Reserve. GE has been a leader in outsourcing decent paying jobs to China, Mexico, and other low-wage countries. Mr. Immelt has a retirement account at General Electric worth an estimated $59 million and made $19 million in total compensation in 2014. He is a member of the Business Roundtable, a group that wants to raise the eligibility age for Medicare and Social Security to 70, cut Social Security and veterans’ benefits, increase taxes on working families, and cut corporate taxes even further. I am sorry that GE is leaving Connecticut and there will be impacts to families and local businesses. However, there is nothing more See Letters / Page 9

Play-based screening Regional School District 13 offers a play-based screening for children age 3 and 4. The screening allows parents the opportunity to have their child observed by district professionals in an informal, fun setting to ensure their child’s development is progressing at an age-appropriate level. Participation is also a pre-requisite for a child to be considered as a role model for the preschool program.
The screenings are scheduled for Feb. 26, 9 and 11 a.m., in the preschool room at Brewster Elementary School. All district 4-year-olds and children turning 3, by Aug. 25, 2016 are welcome. Parental permission and involvement are requirements in the screening. Children must separate from their parents during the screening so that the team can get an accurate See Screening / Page 9

it to them! There’s reading by my stream, floating in my pool, curling up on a winter’s day with a good book. Tomorrow is another day, I tell myself. Tomorrow I will put my nose to the grindstone and mold my life into something grand. But that tomorrow tends to be rather elusive, and then life shakes me up a little, and I realize I had better get hopping. By now, though, I am in fullblown panic mode, and that never goes well. My mind races around like a toddler on amphetamines, and it is not my friend. Try this, try that, it urges. Oh, this is not going to go well for you, it hisses. You should have done a lot more, a lot sooner. Oh, whatever is going to become of you? Things are not looking good, Toots. I get so wound up that any action I take is ineffective, at best, and I berate myself for having taken too much time lounging through life. Guilt is such a merciless master. But since The Day of the License Plate, there’s been a loosening of – something. A gentling. My mind, for the time being anyway, has stopped chasing its tail, and instead, a goodly amount of faith has settled in. The
frenzy is starting to move out, the calm is starting to move in. I’ve given it some thought, and for me, “to be” means to be fully present in the moment, not being whipped by memories of the past or fears of the future; to just “be,” without the drama, before taking a step in any direction, so that when I do make a move, it will come from a place of strength and surefootedness; to be in keeping with my heart, not the dictates of society, because that’s what’s going to get me through life’s bumpy parts. To be firmly rooted in the knowing that everything’s going to be alright. It will. So Billy, what did you come up with? (I honestly don’t remember which way you went with this.) I hope you decided “to be.” I have. As a matter of fact, I’m going to be with a good book right now. And I’m not feeling the least bit guilty about that. Because, really, tomorrow is another day. To the editor: As a 46-year resident of Middlefield, I would like to encourage the District 13 Board of Education to take into consideration the suggestions which were unanimously presented by the Middlefield Board of Finance in their letter of Nov. 24, 2015. It is always good to have the some goals when beginning the budgeting process, and I think the suggestions made by the Middlefield Board of Finance make sense. It appears with the shrinking student base combined with the closing of one of the districts schools there is an opportunity to hold the line on spending this year. Not necessarily
cut spending, but simply hold the line on spending. This seems reasonable given both the likely reduction in support from the state of CT and the unique combination this year of less students and one less school. There is no question that events in the state such as the loss of GE and its jobs are going to continue to keep Connecticut in a financial morass. It makes no sense in ignoring that these forces might eventually impact both Middlefield and Durham. Let’s hold the line on spending in District 13 this year while we have the opportunity. Taking it to con artists and scammers By Noreen Kokoruda Earlier this month, I hosted a community “Fraud Protection Forum” with AARP representatives at the Madison
Senior Center, as I felt it was necessary for the community to discuss various types of fraud, scam tactics and dangers of identity theft. Con artists and scammers, whose
strategies come in a variety of different forms, seek to take advantage of individuals and compromise personal information. Those who attended this session found the
information extremely helpful and participated in meaningful discussion. I’d like to take this time to update those of you who were not able to make it.

In terms of fraud, the old adage holds true that if something is too good to be true, it probably is. It is important to remember that these ploys come from unverifiable sources, and no one should ever transmit information that allows someone to access their bank accounts, personal information and even take control of their computer. It is imperative that all of us, especially seniors, are aware of fraud, scams and identity theft. Please protect yourselves and your savings. If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, feel free to reach out to AARP and speak to a volunteer trained in spotting and reporting fraud. You may call the Fraud Fighter Call Center at 1-877-908-3360 or visit www.aarp.org/fraudwatchnetwork.com. Furthermore, state government has recently launched a website to help combat fraud, and avoid spending millions of tax dollars on state programs each year. Please also visit www.FightFraud.ct.gov, which is designed to be an educational and enforcement tool. Since 2013, the state’s Interagency Fraud Taskforce has worked to coordinate efforts along with 13 state agencies to strengthen the state’s ability to identify, investigate, prosecute and recover state funds. Part of the website provides ways for the public to report suspected wrongdoing in tax filings, health care, anti-trust violations, unfair competition, workers’ compensation and more. I hope you will find these resources helpful. For more fraud prevention tips and information visit www.ct.gov/dcp or call 1-800- 842-2649. Home Improvement & Handyman Services BRUCE’S Complete Residential Work
MERIDEN — Runners of all shapes, sizes, speeds and ages converged on Hubbard Park Sunday morning, Jan. 17 to face an uphill challenge. Over 400 walkers and joggers participated in the 47th annual Tradition Run, a 3.1mile climb to Castle Craig sponsored by the Meriden Parks and Recreation Department and the Record-Journal. “This is record-breaking,” said Jo-Ann Amantea, a parks department employee in charge of registration. “We have never had this many people.” The road race started from humble beginnings and was the brainchild of the late Bernie Jurale, a long time educator who died in 1998. Jurale, an advocate for exercise and nutrition, decided in 1969 that he would run up the hill at Hubbard Park to celebrate his 70th birthday. Each year, the run became more and more popular and others joined. Jurale ran up the mountain until the age of 80. Unlike most races, the Tradition Run is free, puts little emphasis on winning and offers the challenge of a 700foot elevation gain, including 500 feet in the final mile. “Why I do this run every year, I have no idea,” Northford’s Susan Wilson said. “It’s always cold or it’s always snowy and icy. It’s just an adventure, I guess. It’s straight up hill for most of the way, so it’s a challenge. It’s definitely unusual.” For the record, Guilford’s Kerry Arsenault was the first female to finish in 24:21, while Chris Mayer of Middlefield was the top male in 20:48. Mayer, 37, has participated in the Tradition Run a handful of times. “I mainly like it because of the big hill,” he said. “It definitely makes the rest of the day feel better.” Berlin’s Anthony Gonsalves finished second overall. It was his first Tradition Run, but not his first time scaling the mountain. His cross country team at Central See Run / Page 17
