Kings of Karma song featured in local TV spot
LUCKY DOG
By Mark Dionne Town Times
Local band The Kings of Karma, well-known from parties, Peckham and Allyn Brook concerts, the Durham Fair, and other events, will have an original song “The Journey” featured in a TV commercial to be aired on WFSB.
Coginchaug Regional High School’s 2016 prom was held earlier this month at Cascade in Hamden. Middlefield library seeks return of Shakespeare statue By Mark Dionne Town Times
When they were featured on the community access TV show “Shoreline Music Monthly,” copyright rules required the band, which plays covers almost exclusively, to perform original songs during the broadcast. “It’s still in rotation. Every once in a while I’m clicking through and see myself,” said Zito. “People started saying, “Hey, I saw you on TV.’” Rascati was also pleased with the television appearance, which could have been disappointing because of the technical challenge of capturing music in a studio designed for talk.
“I called Lou and said, ‘You’re never going to believe what happened,’” Zito recalled.
“This is Middlefield. We say you don’t have to worry,” said Library Director Jessica Lobner. “You don’t expect anything to be stolen here.”

Creating music for a commercial is a first for the acoustic rock trio and the opportunity came to them fortuitously.
Zito got a call “out of the blue” from someone with InterCommunity, the health-care company he works for as a Program Director, who saw the show and wanted to commission a song.
Staff and patrons of the Levi E. Coe Library are hoping to recover a bust of William Shakespeare stolen from the Middlefield library’s garden.
The statue went missing sometime during the weekend of April 23-24. If the theft occurred on April 23, it would have been on the 400th anniversary of the

As songwriters, Zito and Rascati were challenged with creating a song about what Zito describes as “whole health care for the person, so it’s physical health care, mental health care, and rehabilitation services.” With Zito writing the music and Rascati charged with the vocals, the process and ideas actually came together quickly. Zito said, “It’s people helping people – Boom! – start with that.” A bust of William Shakespeare was stolen from its pedestal in the Shakespeare Garden behind the Levi Coe Library in Middlefield on or around April 23. | Mark Dionne, Town Times

Durham Memorial Day Parade information The 2016 Durham Memorial Day parade is scheduled for Monday, May 30, rain or shine. The parade steps off at 9:15 a.m., at the corner of Haddam Quarter Road and Main Street, continues down Main Street to the Durham Town Green. Participants should meet at the corner by 8:30 a.m. A ceremony honoring servicemen and women immediately follows the parade.
Grand Marshal Former Air Force Sgt. Harold “Bud” Fallon has been named the 2016 Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal. Fallon is a life-long resident
of Connecticut, born in New Haven. He attended New Haven area schools including Wilbur Cross High School, the Stone School, and Quinnipiac College. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1967 during the Vietnam war. Fallon went through basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, then onto advance schooling for munitions at Lowry AFB in Colorado. After training as a munitions specialist, he was assigned for six months to Minot, North Dakota where he loaded nuclear weapons onto B52s. In December of 1968, Fallon was sent to Thailand in support of the Vietnam war.
He spent the next year in U-Tapao, Thailand where he once again loaded B52s. This time, however, he loaded conventional munitions, approximately 100 per plane load. And, they loaded 30 planes a day, seven days a week. After a year in Thailand, Fallon returned to the U.S., this time to Pease Air Force Base in Massachusetts. He spent the next two years in his munitions specialty and again loaded nuclear bombs, this time on FB111s.

Yamartino has attended BOE meetings in the past where he has focused on finances and cost control in his comments. He was also critical of the board’s relation to the boards of finance during the most recent budget process.

Petrella also talked about accountability and cost as her goals for the education system. “Yes, I’m an educator, but I’m also a taxpayer. I do see both sides,” Petrella said. “Foremost is to make sure this district has an excellent quality education
Currently the chair of Middlefield’s Board of Finance, Yamartino said that the BOF has managed to work with boards and commissions in an open, collaborative fashion. “We’ve built up a dialogue and level of trust through the years,” Yamartino said. “I’ve brought openness and honesty to the Board of Finance.”
According to Yamartino, Middlefield residents have asked him to work on the BOE in the past, but it was only a few weeks before the election that he decided to take on the commitment. Yamartino said, “The Board of Education is a challenging job ... You’ve got a board of 10 people – volunteers – that are responsible for everything a town would be re-

Petrella has two grandchildren in RSD13 schools and has been a volunteer at John Lyman Elementary School.
In a similar vein, Yamartino told the Town Times that improving transparency was a motivation to get on the BOE.

Fire company seeks volunteers
PET OF THE WEEK
The Middlefield Volunteer Fire Company is currently participating in Everyday Hero CT, a program dedicated to increasing the number of volunteer firefighters throughout the state. Eighty percent of all fire personnel in Connecticut are volunteers, and the majority of fire departments throughout the state are experiencing a volunteer shortage. Local fire departments need volunteers of all skill levels and abilities, people willing and able to respond to emergencies whenever called upon. Established in 1934, the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. protects and safeguards the lives and property within the boundaries of Middlefield and Rockfall by doing everything within its power to provide firefighting and rescue services, as well as provide mutual aid support to surrounding communities. The MVFC is dedicated to providing for the safety and welfare of the community through the preservation of life, property, and the environment, by maintaining a constant state of readiness through firefighter training, and public education.

WOODS ‘N’ WATER
IT’S ALL GOOD
No better place found than side by side Classmates for life By Mike Roberts Record-Journal staff
“Do you know where your kids are?” It’s a simple enough question, but in our “modern” world, it has many answers, and even gets some vague looks. Being an old coot, I sometimes look back and wonder how we ever got into the mess we now see all around us almost on an everyday basis. There aren’t a heck of a lot of us left that can remember the “good old days.” The good old days were a time when the only drug we ever knew about was an aspirin. Heroin overdoses were unheard of as well as all of the other drugs that are now so prevalent. Nowadays, just about every child has some kind of access to an electronic world that can often lead to the darkest places that no child should ever experience. This all came to mind when I attended the two recent children’s fishing derbies at Mirror Lake in Hubbard Park. The excited and happy looks on kids’ faces as they brought their fish into the scoring table and the proud looks on
the faces of the parents made me even more appreciative of those who held such fishing derbies for children, because it had an effect on some of the parents as well. I now see them with their children spending time with them fishing Mirror Lake and, YES, they do know here there kids are — with them! When I was a kid (many, many moons ago), just about every free day we had was akin to a fishing derby. Even with limited transportation, places we could fish were many via bus or riding our bicycles to. For the gang from South Meriden, it meant boarding a Connecticut Company bus in the Village and traveling to Meriden where we would get a transfer slip that would allow us to get on the West Main Street bus and travel to Hubbard Park for some fishing. And unbelievable as it may sound, we did this without a parent watching over us! We were virtually on our own. After a day of fishing at Mirror Lake, we would then reverse the procedure and travel back to the Village while displaying the fish we had caught to our fellow bus
travelers. Some days, if the weather looked promising, we would make the trip on our bicycles, and they too would be trouble free. What I see going on in the world today forces me to wonder if my parents would be charged with child abuse or neglect for the trust they showed in us and the freedoms we enjoyed as children. Once we left our home for some kind of adventure we were out of contact with our parents. There were no cell phones in existence back then and, of course, all of the other electronic devices now in use were only figments of one’s imagination. You told your parents where you would be and, if you had a change in plans, you would find a way to let them know—or else! Back then a slap on the butt was NOT considered child abuse. While on summer vacation from school, we would sometimes play sandlot baseball, football and basketball, but it was the fishing that really got us out into outdoors on just about a daily basis. I grew up on Hanover Road, right across from St. Laurent Cemetery. Back then, what is now Melville Avenue was nothing more See Roberts, A11

There’s nothing like a class reunion (mine is coming up in September) to punctuate the fact that the years, which were once content to take a leisurely stroll around the park, have now strapped on a pair of skates. My peers and I cannot wrap our minds around the date of birth that’s on our driver’s license. We think there must surely have been a clerical error. “I don’t get it,” we lament. “One minute we were 18 and dancing in the streets, without a care in the world, and the next minute we’re-well, here.” And those childrearing years? You bring your little darling home from the hospital, all shiny and new, and then you blink, and the next thing you know he’s gone and gotten himself all grown up. I’m going to stop blinking! So now my class reunion is coming to take me by the hand, like the ghost of Christmas past, and whisk me off to days long gone. I love these things, but they bring with them a fair amount of shock. It seems that Father Time has been having a wee bit of fun with us, seeing to it that we don’t even recognize each other anymore (I don’t think you’ll be surprised when I tell you that as soon as I open my mouth, everyone knows me.) Ah, but then comes the magic, as we rewind the movie that is our life. We reminisce, and for a time we are living our own version of “Cocoon.” We are running through the halls and being told not to. We are disrupting the class with our jokes. (You’ll never guess who that was!) We are in choir, rehearsing for the Christmas concert. We are parading through the halls on the Ides of March, decked out in togas and crowns of wreaths. We are having our English class outside on a hot June day, in search of shade and breezes, because there were no air conditioners in our schools back then. We are engaged with life, every moment of it, and we feel like the world is ours for the taking. It never occurs to us that we won’t be young forever. But as much fun as it is to re-visit yesteryear with my school chums, it’s even more fun to see where we are all at now. I love hearing the stories of their lives. No one story is any less fascinating than another. Some are even quite surprising. And I love how the years have deepened us, given us substance, made us more interesting, made us wiser. I really love the “us” that we are now. I think we’re an even better version of those 18-year-olds. I love how there is no short supply of pullout-all-the-stops mirth. We laugh loud and we laugh often. At one of the reunions a classmate and I got so silly over something – I don’t remember what – that we couldn’t even sit up straight, we were so wracked See Carr, A11

than a dirt road that ended where the AOH Irish club now stands.
Morin’s Grove was a spot where you could enjoy being a kid. Fish for whatever the grove would offer you if you liked to fish, or use the pond for a cooling swim on a hot summer day. In the freezing days of winter, Morin’s Grove turned into a skating rink where we played “pond hockey.”
At one time the area was known as Morin’s Grove and was owned by Frank “Dosh” Morin and his family. It featured a picnic area that contained a small “Dance Hall,” an outdoor bar and cooking area and picnic tables spread about the grounds. The main feature for us kids was a pond that contained many different species of fish, including some goldfish that would tip the scales at a couple of pounds. The pond was fed by a spring that ran out of the hillside in back of Walnut Grove Cemetery and was used as a source of drinking water for some of the locals. As kids we would walk back into the woods and dig into the damp soil in search of worms and night crawlers to use as bait for the fish that inhabited the pond. Now, this was in a time before our outdoor world was tarnished with fishing tournaments for big money. For us kids, simply catching a fish, even the smallest of sunfish, was a thrill, and if we caught a fish big enough to take home for the dinner table, it was even
And all of this was done without parental supervision. How was this ever possible? Would you believe that back then, there was NEVER a child lost to a drug overdose or had any of our children disappear without a trace, and even though firearms were prevalent in just about every home we never had a drive-by shooting incident. I guess we have to blame it on our parents and our school teachers for doing the right thing back then. Of course, today they would be doing the “wrong” thing, according to those in charge. Sometimes I wonder if anyone in authority has noticed that before drug use became so popular and profitable, there was no firearms violence like we see today. Maybe our esteemed lawmakers and news media ought to join forces to outlaw

with spasms of laughter. It was that wondrous kind of thing where tears are streaming down your face and your abdominal muscles are getting such a workout that they hurt. “OMG, this hurts,” you cry out, but you don’t stop. You can’t stop! We laughed so hard and for so long, that people started to gather around us (I seemed to recall they gave us a wide berth.) For those few hours that my old comrades and I are together, we are bonded, in all directions and for all of time. We were fledglings together, back at the beginning of our
lives, and that’s a bond that doesn’t go away. And always, each and every time, I am struck by how nice these people are, and how lucky I was to have shared my tadpole years with them. It’s going to be an awesome night. And I’m leaving my skates home. When our kids as well as the neighborhood kids were younger, fishing trips were always on the bucket list. I would take any of the kids that wanted to go fishing out for some fishing fun. Sometimes it would be from the shoreline and other times in my boat.

I have mentioned Since we moved to Dogwood it before, but it really shows what getting a kid into fishing is all about. See Roberts, A12
To most kids, a fish is a fish! They have not been indoctrinated by groups that hold certain species of fish on an alter as the ONLY fish worthy of fishing for. This was never more evident than a couple of weeks ago when the fishing derbies were held at Hubbard Park. The kids would come to the weigh-in table with an ear-to-ear grin regardless of the species of fish they had caught, or of any size for that matter. When we were kids some of the sunfish we caught could almost be declared as bait,
When getting a kid into fishing, it should not be looked at as a chore. It is supposed to be fun and endless hours spent fishing when the fish are not cooperating is not fun, not for me and you and, especially, not for a child.
I had taken our kids down to the Meriden Rod & Gun Club pond, which is filled with trout. I figured they would really get a kick out of hooking up with a trout or two.
15 eateries. Just 1 plate. The anticipation is building. From Bear's Smokehouse BBQ, Dunkin’ Donuts and 13 other eateries to cup holders on every seat to free Wi Fi this is what the new 6,000 seat Dunkin' Donuts Park is all about. Starting this summer, eat up the fun! 44327-01

Lane 13 years ago, we have had countless wildlife sightings by our home, including deer, wild turkey, red-tailed hawks, an eagle, a black bear, coyotes, foxes, woodchucks, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, possums, skunks, numerous song birds and, just recently, a peacock!

YES, I said a peacock! He is an escapee from one of the area homes, but he has been wandering around the neighborhood like he owns the place. If anyone gets too close to it, he simply flaps his wings and goes to the nearest rooftop. He was in our backyard the other day and I threw him some dog kibble that he seemed to enjoy. And then the other evening we were going to take the dogs for a walk and, as we exited the garage door, I saw a small skunk in the roadway

by the driveway. I grabbed the dogs and put them into the truck and retreated to the house. The skunk was staggering, and out in the daylight. We had been previously warned about such erratic behavior in an animal by those that know. A call to our local police and a referral to the Animal Control Division had a police officer and an Animal Control Officer at our home in no time flat. The Animal Control Officer was Sarah Bacon and the professionalism she showed in capturing that infected little skunk had to be seen to be believed. Kudos to her and our city for having a person with that kind of expertise in handing a sick, wild critter. See ya’ and God Bless America and watch over our troops wherever they may be.

On the other side are those who want to add to the reforms made by Vatican II. Call to Action is a lay group that held its first conference forty years ago, in 1976, when the 1,340 delegates voted that the church should “reevaluate its positions on issues like celibacy for priests, the maleonly clergy, homosexuality (and) birth control.” Voice
of the Faithful is another lay group formed initially in the Boston area in response to sexual abuse of youth by priests, the focus of the recent film “Spotlight.” Corpus, organized in 1974,. has been working for a “renewed priesthood of married and single men and women dedicated to serving God through a Community of Believers.”

Among others urging change is Today’s American Catholic, a publication edited by laity with its headquarters in Farmington, Conn. I first became aware of it through Luke Lauretano, a reader of this column, and learned more over lunch with David Fortier, the founder and first editor of the paper, published nine times a year. The first issue was put together on the Fortier kitchen table in 1993. He is a published writer and poet who teaches English at Rocky Hill High School, formerly editor of the Catholic Transcript, and active at St. Joseph Church in Bristol. A major goal of TAC is “keeping open the windows of Vatican II.” “We believe the church is a wonder,” a statement reads, “and a variety of views adds to its splendor.” For years Today‘s American Catholic carried columns of the late Frs. Richard McBrien and Andrew Greeley, two key progressive figures in the church. The paper has 550 subscribers, the current editor is Denise Stankovics, and both articles and inquiries are welcome. More information is available at TAC’s website: todaysamericancatholic.org. Pope Francis is very popular among both Catholics and non-Catholics, a man of immense compassion and peace. It has been inspiring to watch him reach out to those of different faiths, cultures and nations, to the poor, the disabled and marginalized, emphasizing mercy and reconciliation, eager to tear down walls and bring increased understanding. One of his greatest challenges is preserving and strengthening the spirit of unity within his church that includes such a wide variety of opinions on a host of highly controversial subjects.

Lawmakers on both sides of marijuana issue look to next year’s session
Lawmakers opposed to legalization said they share Sabet’s concerns. State Sen. Joe Markley,
“The people who work with youths have really stressed how important it is not to give the message to youths” that the substance is harmless, he said. Rep. Vincent J. Candelora, R-North Branford, said he was concerned that higher
“I just feel that we should be not a leader on this issue, but should be treading lightly,” he said. Democrats also said they have reservations. State Rep. Mary M. Mushinsky, D-Wallingford, and state Rep. Hilda E. Santiago, D-Meriden, said they are both worried about people driving under
the influence of marijuana, consumption by children, and regulating usage by people who operate heavy machinery. Mushinsky said she plans to gauge her constituents’ stance before next year’s legislative session, but also said Connecticut has the chance to learn from the experiences of Colorado and Washington. “Fortunately, we’re not the See Marijuana, A23

Legislation to legalize the recreational use of marijuana put forward this year failed to even garner a public hearing before the Judiciary Committee, but state Rep. Juan R. Candelaria, who supports the legalization for recreational use, said he hopes a task force being put together by House Speaker J. Brendan Sharkey, D-Hamden, will recommend ways to address concerns.
“The effects of legalization permeate that city and that state dramatically,” Sabet said of Colorado and its largest city, Denver.

Attorney honored with Pro Bono Award The Connecticut Probate Assembly has recognized Middletown attorney David J. Reich with its 2016 Pro Bono Award for his work representing indigent clients in the Probate Courts, particularly those with mental illness. Noting that the number of cases involving individuals with mental illness has increased by 48 percent in the last five years, Probate Court Administrator Paul J. Knierim said, “Conservatorship and commitment cases are
among the more challenging matters we handle in the Probate Courts. This award recognizes the critical work that Attorney Reich does to ensure due process for some of the most vulnerable individuals in our state and help them work toward achieving productive and fulfilling lives.” Reich has been in solo practice since 1994, focusing on probate law. first ones in line,” she said, adding Connecticut does already have more regulations in place for medical marijuana than Colorado, which she compared to the “wild west.”
Candelaria said the legalization of marijuana could also “undercut the black market” and produce savings by eliminating arrests and prosecutions associated with marijuana.
Candelaria said he asked Sharkey to put together a task force to examine these very issues, agreeing that he wants “legislation that actually works.”

MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD
Rep. Matthew Lesser, D-Middletown, one of 10 lawmakers who co-introduced a marijuana legalization bill during this year’s legislative session, said it would free up resources for opioid addiction and other drugs that “are putting our constituents in the morgue.”
He also said the task force should try to determine existing levels of teen usage and driving under the influence occurrences in Connecticut, as the perception of increases in Colorado could be the sign of poor tracking in the past.
Sabet agreed with the need for a reform on some of the stricter drug policies, but questioned whether legalizing what he called a “dropout drug” is the answer.
A federal study said Colorado’s top rank in 2014 for teen marijuana consumption was because its rate remained flat while those in the two states ahead of it dropped.
“We don’t need to go from one extreme to the other,” he said, and suggested the state instead focus more on substance abuse treatment and prevention.
Santiago, meanwhile, said lawmakers can’t ignore the potential for additional tax revenue at a time when they’re looking at budget deficits in excess of $1 billion each year in fiscal years 2018 and 2019.

“My concern is how much money are we going to make and is it worth it,” she said. Markley and Candelora both said the state shouldn’t make the decision for fiscal reasons, warning that the social costs alone outweigh the benefits. For supporters, though, legalization is about more

Spending the winter at ‘the best job in America’ points in the golf swing. By Tim Buczak Record-Journal staff
Editor’s Note: Tim Buczak of Meriden is a full-time PGA Class A golf instructor at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield. His column, “On the Tee with Tim,” will appear on Saturdays in the Record-Journal through the summer.
After just two weeks working with Doc, I learned five times as much about the golf swing that I had known previously. One day at work, a British golf pro who works outside of London said with his sharp British accent, “You know, Tim, you’ve got the best job in America.”
As those words have sunk in, I now truly believe that statement and I feel like I This past winter I had the have acquired a treasure pleasure of being the assistant for the legendary Dr. Jim trove of valuable knowledge that could only have been Suttie down in Naples, Fla. learned through years of “Doc,” as they call him, is one teaching — thanks to Doc. of the most knowledgeable Over the past 30 years, Doc teachers in the game and is currently ranked as a Top 20 Suttie has taught over 80 golf instructor by Golf Digest. touring professionals, including Paul Azinger, Fred Dr. Suttie has a doctorFunk, Chip Beck, Steve ate in biomechanics from Flesch, Kevin Streelman, Middle Tennessee UniverMark Wilson and Tom sity with a thesis entitled “A Purtzer. Doc uses cameras from four different angles that can be viewed on computers/televisions and can be integrated with software that can show anything imaginable related to the golf swing. Working with a launch monitor, a weight transfer machine and a putting station, as well as filming players as they hit and putt from all different angles, was just part of my job description (as well as taking Doc’s dog Bunker out for his daily rounds).
Together they worked on strengthening Larry’s lefthand grip, keeping the club more in front of him on the takeaway, lowering his swing at the top and getting better sequential motion on the downswing.
For the upcoming months, I will have a weekly article with tips, drills and techniques to help you improve your golf game. Until next time ...
