Open House to recognize Korn’s closing By Mark Dionne Town Times
Korn Elementary School will hold an Open House Wednesday, June 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. for people to say goodbye to the school, which is scheduled to close after the current school year. Principal Deb Stone told the Town Times, “We really want anyone who came to Korn – and even if you didn’t – to come in.” See Korn, A3

Middlefield ready to celebrate ‘150’ Plenty of events planned to mark the big birthday By Mark Dionne Town Times
A jam-packed week of festivities and events in early June will mark the 150th anniversary of Middlefield’s founding. “We’re definitely ready,” Taryn Ruffino, co-chair of the Middlefield Sesquicentennial Committee told the Town Times. “It’s exciting. All that hard work, you can see it now.” The weekend of June 3-5 will be particularly busy, with a Lions Club carnival, parade, and a cardboard boat race. The Lions Club carnival will take place at Peckham Park on all three days. The
parade will start at St. Coleman’s Church on Saturday, June 4 at 10 a.m., ending at Peckham Park, and the boat race will be at Lake Beseck on Sunday, June 5 at 10 a.m. The parade takes the place of the semi-annual Old Home Days parade, which was scheduled to be held last year. “We skipped last year in order to do a bigger event this year,” Ruffino said. The parade also gives school bands, which were rained out of the Memorial Day Parade, a chance to march. The carnival will feature rides, a beer tent, and food like pulled pork, fried dough, and strawberry shortcake. Some of the food will be sold by civic groups. The beer tent, which also has wine, will require its own admission. Music will be a big part of
the festivities. For the music, Ruffino said the committee “tried to go with local performers but had to reach out a little bit.” On Saturday, June 11, an all day line up of Bourbon Chaser, Jackson Hill, Crossover, and Coconuts plays at Peckham Park. Rockside will play Wednesday, June 8 and Eight to the Bar hits Peckham Park on Friday, June 10. In between the Wednesday and Friday rock bands will be a Jazz Night on Thursday, June 9. Several of the sesquicentennial events focus on history. On Monday, June 6 at 6 p.m. there will be a ceremony to commemorate Middlefield’s original settlers at the Old North Burying Ground, which has been the site of several clean-ups lately. At 7 p.m. that same night, the See Birthday, A2

Memorial Day Parade continues despite rain By Mark Dionne Town Times
Thanks to a steady morning of rain, the Memorial Day Parade of 2016 in Durham had fewer spectators and marchers than usual but the parade was greeted with cheers and respect by those who came to Main Street to watch, many with umbrellas and rain gear. On the morning of the parade, organizers called off See Parade, A9

Middlefield’s website has a link to a full calendar of events. The Sesquicentennial Committee published a booklet of events. According to Ruffino, 1,500 copies were printed and are available at the Levi Coe Library, Town Hall, and at all walk-in businesses in Middlefield and Rockfall. Ruffino said she has learned more about the community in putting the celebration together. “There’s so much in the community,” she said, “and all of that coming together will let it shine.”

A FUN, IF WET, TIME AT THE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
Photos by Mark Dionne, Town Times
Roman Maletta (center in yellow) sits under an umbrella with his family, from left, moms Julie and Nikki Maletta and aunt Michelle Maletta. Though only 15 months old, Roman was at his second Memorial Day Parade in Durham.
Annie, owned by Keri Salva of Durham, sported a red, white, and blue bandana for the occasion.
The veterans float moved down Main Street to applause and recognition.
Girl scouts from Durham and Middlefield march. Once again, the Boy Scouts’ cannon started both the parade and the road race.
Like most spectators, Aaron and Avery of Middlefield came prepared with umbrellas.
Shaylah Finnerty, Sara Kaliszewski, Julia Salley, and Paige Kaliszewski hang out before the Fun Run and 4K.
Runners got off to an uncertain start as some ran on the countdown and some waited for the cannon.

>> Parade marching bands from Memorial Middle School, Strong Middle School, and Coginchaug Regional High School to protect the instruments from the rain, but other groups participated like normal. Many area parades were called off. Southington, Wallingford, East Hampton, Berlin, Branford, East Haven, Guilford, West Haven, Madison, and Hamden all canceled their parades or converted them to indoor ceremonies. Local spectators and marchers greeted the weather with good humor. “We had lots of umbrellas,” said Tabitha Merrill of Durham, who marched with the Coginchaug Soccer Club. Warm and wet weather, Merrill noted, was preferable to cold and wet. Coginchaug Soccer Club President Kevin Merrill said the organization had a decent turnout considering the weather. “People still want to show their support,” Merrill said.
Francis paid tribute to local men and women in the service and encouraged the crowd to remember the sacrifice of veterans. Former Air Force Sgt. Harold “Bud” Fallon served as the parade’s Grand Marshal. Fallon joined the Air Force in 1967 and served in Thailand during the Vietnam War, loading munitions onto planes. After
Active with the local VFW, Fallon carried the VFW flag in the Memorial Day Parade for the last 18 years. Former Durham First Selectman Mary Ann Boord walked with the Durham Fair Association, which recognized its 100th anniversary. More photos on the preceding page (A8). | Mark Dionne, Town Times

into fashion wear (I’ll call it my fall line.) I can stand on them to reach things that are up high. If I am feeling particularly lonely, I can line them up next to me on the couch, like a child gathers her dolls around her (I won’t give them names, though. I think that would be too over-the-top.) I can put a pretty bow on them and give them as Christmas presents (spoiler alert!) But I hope that all this talk of dust bunnies does not discourage you dear folks from visiting me (I promise to knock down the cobwebs, which is a whole other story.) Hopefully, they’ll be in a good mood and will let you in. And then you can just pull up a dust bunny and get comfy while I make the tea.
