Lyman Orchards celebrating 275 years By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

As the 12th oldest family business in the U.S., the Lyman family has endured devastating crop failures, poor weather and farming conditions, and 17-year cicadas. Family members also knew when to buy land, invest in manufacturing, and rail, commit to community, take a stand against slavery, adapt to changes and build a longlasting brand based on family values. Coginchaug honors graduates, outside By Mark Dionne Town Times staff

Tuesday, June 14, the Coginchaug Regional High School Class of 2016 held their graduation ceremony on the artificial turf of the athletic fields and became the first class with what Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi called an “official, plannedfor, outdoor graduation.” Thanks to a powerful freak storm and downed trees, last year’s seniors held their graduation a day late and on the Wesleyan campus. The outdoor experience was pleasant enough that administrators decided to do it on purpose. Ticket holders got seats on the turf while the stadium stands held general admission. In the event of rain, ticket holders would be

The last ‘last day of school’ at Korn By Mark Dionne Town Times staff

In keeping with principal Deb Stone’s approach, the last day of school at Korn Elementary School was not a sad occasion but, like most last days of school, marked by parties, yearbooks, and playing outside in the sun. Students left with shouts of “Summer!” and “We’re free!” But June 14, 2016, the last day of the 20162017 school year, marked the last day Korn will be used as a school. Facing declining enrollment in the district, the Board of Education voted to close the school as part of a multi-phase plan to convert the district to a model of two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. And Korn was the first to go. All of the 2015-2016 students from Korn, which taught third and fourth grade stuSee Korn, A14

The district won’t be the same. He is a special guy; capable of relating, mentoring and leading both parents and kids. We all entered Memorial from the small nurturing elementary school where kids (and parents) come from two different worlds, separated by learning styles but also differentiated by culture and priorities.

So I call the pool people, trying not to sound too desperate, and then, of course, I must wait two weeks before they can get here. It seems that a considerable number of people, with a great more foresight than I have exhibited, are ahead of me. So I mark the calendar, and I wait. And I roast. And then, finally, the cover is off, the filter is hooked up and humming, and I am a happy girl. Oh, but I’m not home free yet. One must “treat” one’s water. One must get the pH right. One must tend to one’s “water clarity.” One must get the debris out, and there’s usually a lot of that. One must be able to rest in the knowledge that one’s calcium has just the right amount of hardness. One must plug in one’s ion-

And then, with hardly any advance notice, winter has decided to retreat. And I am now reading by my stream, in 118 degree temperatures, and I feel like I am being baked alive. And there is no relief to be had in my pool, because it is still all wrapped up in its winter gear. Why, oh why, did I not call the pool folks way before this, so that I could be swimming now? I ask myself. Last year I said that this year I would do better, that I would be ready for that first scorcher of a day. I was not ready.

Commissioners Barrett, Eriksen, Foley, Fronc and Pasquale voted to deny the amendment. Not one member voted yes. Three abstained. Two were absent.

It happens a lot. The calendar says its spring, but winter begs to differ. The days are chilly, the nights are frigid. And while I am still bundling up, I am not giving any thought whatsoever to planting a vegetable garden or opening my pool. Just thinking about putting on a bathing suit gives me the shivers.

I have not waited for my pool to acquire the correct levels of anything before taking the plunge. I feel like I’ve waited long enough. Oh, I’d had all intentions of getting everything just right, of hanging in there just a little bit longer until my water was absolutely exemplary. But then the temps climbed into the low 200s (in the shade), and I was sweating so much that I feared I would lose all my bodily fluids and would never get them back again. So in I went, hoping that there was nothing in that water that would peel off my skin. I put on my matronly, baggy suit with the skirt that reaches down to my knees (I’d like

to say it’s baggy because of a loss of weight, but alas, it’s simply due to a loss of elasticity), and I eased myself into the Arctic waters. Which literally took my breath away. I’m pretty sure CPR was called for, but since there was nobody there to perform it, I just powered through. And then the water was okay, although this could have been attributed to numbness. No matter. The worst was over. Hello, old friend, I said as I clambered aboard my floaty chair, which, like my suit, has seen better days. (Yes, I talk to pool supplies, but as of late they have not been answering me; a good sign, I say.) And once again I was in my

There will be a tennis tournament in Frank’s honor on June 18. After the BOE meeting relocated to CRHS because of the power failure, Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi read the names of the various staff retirements and noted that they represented about 312 years of experience.

Though not a retiree, Director of Information Technology Frank created a scholarship for a CRHS student who Rich Fielding was given an demonstrates sportsmanship impromptu recognition as he and love of tennis and wished prepares to take a job in his hometown next year. for the bench donations at the courts. was known for his enthusiasm for technology. “He’s truly the only person who can have the board riveted while talking about toner,” said Veronesi. The BOE also recognized the departing students who served as CRHS liaisons, Larissa Cade, Taylor Marino, and Matt Sawicki. In their final report to the BOE, the students relayed how much they enjoyed the senior Washington, D.C. trip, how grateful they were for the scholarships given out at Scholarship Night, and how excited they were to be the first class with a scheduled outdoor graduation at the CRHS field.

As a long time resident of Durham, I am thrilled to finally join this amazing group of business women who epitomize hard work, commitment and innovation. Being a small business owner has been a dream realized, and I can’t think of a better community to serve. For the last two years, I have worked closely with Core Club & 24/7 Gym owner Cheryl Salva as a trainer and TRX instructor. Cheryl has done an amazing job building a beautiful facility, hiring the best instructors and building a loyal membership base. When the opportunity presented itself recently to assume ownership, I jumped at it! If you have not seen our club, I strongly encourage you to stop by for a tour and free week. We are truly different. We are not an impersonal franchise who will treat you like a number. I and my staff will always greet you with a smile and will get to know you and your fitness goals. Why support an out-of- town corporation who has no vested interest in giving back to our community? My staff is comprised of local men, women and teenagers who are committed to member satisfaction and building the best gym in Middlesex county. We have over 13,000 square feet and offer 30 group exercise classes in our beautiful studio, boxing, TRX, spinning and training in our lower level and cardio, free weights and circuit machines in our 24/7 space. We offer group and individual training that is tailored to YOUR needs. I have worked in the fitness industry for over 27 years and am passionate about helping individuals achieve a healthy lifestyle with exercise and nutrition in a supportive and non-threatening environment. I have lived in Durham for over 20 years with my husband and two children. The Vynalek family has been part of the community for over 120 years and still maintains one of the oldest continually operating family farms in the region. I look forward to welcoming all of you as new Core Club members.

(Next to Carolyn Adams Country Barn) Tammy Gullo, owner of Wild Wisteria, a floral and gift boutique in Durham, has been a floral designer for over 25 years. Her passion for designing and owning her own business started while growing up at her family’s store, The Garden Shoppe in Wallingford. In 1996, Tammy started a floral home demonstration business called Creative Floral Designs. For over 12 years, she brought her creative touch into the homes of people interested in her unique designs. Tammy’s floral work has also been featured at the New York Gift shows. Today, Wild Wisteria is a home away from home where custom floral designs and home decorating ideas are offered in a friendly and personal manner. As you walk through the doors of Wild Wisteria you will feel like you are transformed into another world with the wonderful fragrances, the soothing music and beautiful decor. Tammy and Alyssa have many unique gifts for all occasions complete with gift-wrapping. There is something here for everyone from floral arrangements, home decor, fragrant candles & potpourri to inspirational frames & books, aromatherapy, bath & body, chocolate truffles, Stonewall Kitchen and women’s accessories. A visit to Wild Wisteria is a feast for the eyes...a solution for that perfect gift... and an experience of polite friendliness.

Hunter Law, LLC is a general practice law firm owned and operated by Attorney Nancy S. Hunter. The only law firm located in Durham, Attorney Hunter saw the potential and opportunity to fill the legal gap within the local community and opened her doors in March of 2015. In building her practice, she thrives on connecting with local professionals such as real estate agents, accountants, financial advisors, insurance agents and loan officers to create a referral network for her clients and business associates to help the community keep quality business services local and familiar. Throughout her 13 years of practice across Connecticut, Attorney Hunter has enjoyed the relationships she has built with her clients who are drawn to her personal attention, responsiveness and genuine care and concern for their cause and needs. “What makes me stand out from other lawyers is my responsiveness to clients. I have a history of resolving various client issues within 24 hours. Of course, that timing isn’t possible with every issue, but when it is, I act. Who wouldn’t be happy with that kind of service? I think some lawyers forget that being a lawyer isn’t always about just knowing the law, but it’s even more about providing quality service and showing each and every client they matter.” Among various areas of law, she serves the community in personal injury, real estate and estate planning. Stone noted that while the school is closing, the teachers and traditions will continue. According to Stone, every school in the district will receive a staff member from Korn next year. Stone will become the new principal at Memorial. At the June 8 BOE meeting, Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi called Stone’s job guiding the staff through the closing “nothing short of remarkable.”

Earlier at that same meeting, which followed an Open House for residents, Stone read from a card given to her by the school’s staff, “A

A slightly open stance — with the front foot pulled towards the golfer — restricts body movement and calls for a more controlled golf shot. As far as the backswing is concerned, a normal golf shot rotates around the back hip. A wedge shot should rotate around the front hip. Rotating around the front hip keeps the weight left and will keep the arm swing shorter, which is always good for control.

The ball position will be in the middle of the player’s feet, which should be pretty narrow. The hands will be slightly ahead of the golf ball so that the player can hit down and compress the ball instead of hitting up and flipping the wrists at it.

The stance for a wedge should have about 60 percent of your weight on the front foot. The weight will predominantly stay on that foot throughout the swing.

If a higher, softer trajectory is required, first weaken the top handgrip so that the thumb is around 12 o’clock. This leads to a softer golf shot off the face of the club. With a weaker grip, the clubface will naturally open.

In addition, widening the stance and moving the ball up toward your front foot will lead to a higher trajectory. Be aware that the ball may carry markedly shorter with this method, so practice will be required to consistently achieve this shot selection.

44187-01 1288111

The swing being described today — the wedge swing — may be slightly different than what you’ve thought it was.

In 2000 at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Tiger Woods hit a pitching wedge from 100 yards that landed about five feet right of the hole, hit the slope and proceeded to go in the hole. That shot propelled a 7-shot comeback on the back nine as another win for Tiger. Later that summer,

Tiger won the U.S. Open at Pebble by a record 15 shots, dismantling the field as well as setting a major championship record for margin of victory.

mountain, we finally get to see the view from the top,” Sawicki said. “We have not only found what we are passionate about but put it to good use.” Valedictorian Kyle Adams took a unique approach to a commencement speech. In his remarks, he told the graduating class that they were not special. There were many graduating classes and many valedictorians across the country, Adams said, so they were in the company of thousands. Adams used youth baseball trophies as props to illustrate how easy it was to be recognized for showing up. Adams encouraged everyone “not to be special but to take actions that are special.” Adams also thanked the Board of Education, administrators, and teachers in District 13, calling special attention to Strong Middle School science teacher Richard McCarthy. Adams said that “Doctor Mac,” as McCarthy is known, urged him to do better as he went to CRHS. After the diplomas were handed out, class president Shaun Whitaker told the audience “If you give a Devil a diploma ... they’re going to make a future with it,” and the Class of 2016 left the field to celebrate.
