Devoted tennis fan honored with tourney, bench By Mark Dionne Town Times
Tennis players and fans from different generations and other community members gathered at the tennis courts at Allyn Brook Park on Saturday, June 19 to honor the memory of Dr. Kevin Frank of Durham with a tennis tournament. The tournament made a fitting gesture for Frank, who was known as a devoted tennis fan and a supporter of Coginchaug Regional High School players in particular.

The tournament was organized by Durham’s Park and Recreation Commission and run by a special committee, including tournament director Karen Kean. Before the tournament, the group dedicated a new bench overlooking the courts to Frank. According to Kean, the tournament was originally designed to raise funds to purchase the bench, but thanks

Celebration of Middlefield’s ‘150th’ comes to a close
The Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, took place for the second time on the Durham Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 18. Relay for Life events consist of teams with at least one member in motion around a track to symbolize the constant struggle against cancer.

The Durham event consisted of more than 20 teams raising money for the cause, according to event organizer Emily Sokol.
Middlefield residents and event organizers can slow down and take a breath now that the busy weeks and multiple activities celebrating Middlefield’s 150th anniversary in the beginning of June have come to an end.
Sokol organized last year’s Relay for Life, which also took place in June on the fairgrounds. Immediately after that event, Sokol said she wanted to do it again.
Schedule highlights included a Sesquicentennial Parade on Saturday, June 4, a Lions Club carnival that same weekend, and a musical lineup at Peckham Park on Saturday, June 11, ending with fireworks.
In addition to the relay, supporters put together luminar-

IT’S ALL GOOD
Calendar
Going back to the basics By Diana Carr
I’ve heard that fitting into her skinny jeans makes a woman truly happy. And for me it is just hearsay. I, personally, would have no idea. Oh, maybe way back when. Back when I had the toned (relatively speaking) body that is the hallmark of youth, and when I could easily slip into just about anything. Ah, those were the days. But then when I think about it, not really. Yes, the landscape has changed over the years. Today there are bulges where there were none before. Some things migrated to the south for the winter but then forgot to come back. Oh, but there’s good news. Read on, my friends. When I was just a pup, looking good for the opposite sex was of paramount importance. Gents, I hope you appreciate what I put myself through for you! I was always cinching something in, to the point where taking a deep breath
seemed like a distant and treasured memory; or trying – and I emphasize the word “trying”– to sleep on rollers the size of boulders that did little else but torment me; and undergarments (I will not go into detail here, this being a family paper and all) that even the Victorian ladies would have balked at, in a Herculean attempt to prevent various parts of my anatomy from spilling out. Oh, and the make-up. I wouldn’t think of venturing out into the world without first “putting on my face.” Eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, concealer, foundation, blusher. The whole gamut. It occurs to me now, but it didn’t then, that I could have easily been mistaken for someone on her way to perform at a children’s birthday party. All that was missing were the balloons and the big shoes. And the question that always teetered on the tip of my tongue was “Do I look fat in this?” (I have found that it’s best to never ask that ques-
tion.) Not looking fat, in anything, at any time, was always a priority. Which made the scale a fickle master that determined my mood for the day.

But as the years ticked by I dropped more and more of the outer trappings, as my life, thankfully, took on more depth. Little by little I leaned toward clothes that didn’t suck the life out of me. Little by little the face paint was banished. The rollers were tossed away. I realized that all that stuff was not me. I wanted to be the real me.

Well, now I am! There is such freedom to be had in the Wisdom Years, don’t you think? (Do you like that one? The Wisdom Years!) Where what you have cultivated on the inside is what matters; the only thing that matters, really. Where your opinion of yourself is the most important one. Where comfort, and being at home in your own skin, is everything. That’s the good news. We get to be our authentic selves. Take us or leave us.
Pasta dinner - Steven Fumiatti of Troop 27 has scheduled a pasta supper fundraiser for Monday, June 27, 5 to 7 p.m., at Dad’s Restaurant, 740 N. Colony Road, Wallingford. A fee is charged. Proceeds benefit Fumiatti’s Eagle Scout project. Tickets available at the Farmers Market or at the door.

“The bench was already paid for so all proceeds will go to the Dr. Kevin Frank Scholarship Fund at Liberty Bank,” Kean said. Members of the Frank family, including his children Emily, Melanie, and Greg, where on hand for the event and played in the tournament. All of the Frank children played tennis at CRHS. “He was an avid tennis player,” said Kean. “He helped the tennis teams – boys and girls.”
Kevin Frank’s wife, Dr. Jan Frank, thanked everyone for supporting the project and said that her husband would appreciate the recognition for tennis players. She said he would support the team “win or lose” and “used to grit his teeth” at the lack of recognition for the tennis teams.
She also warned the tournament players about their on-court demeanor. “Kevin is here. He is watching.” After the event, tournament committee member Melanie Remillard looked back. “People were smiling, hugging, reminiscing [and] being reminded that life is about mo-
ments, and the time we have with our family and friends, the passion that keeps us going, the things we all do that connect us to each other.” The tournament featured doubles divisions for men, women, and mixed. All player received shirts, water bottles, and gift bags. “Everything today has been donated, which just thrills me,” Kean said. Forty-eight players signed up for the tournament, forming twenty-four doubles teams.

Committee members Kean, Remillard, Sherry Hill, Ryan Donecker, Amy Schaefer, Tray Racki, Pam Carey,
and Garrett D’Amato were on hand as players and volunteers. Recent CRHS graduate D’Amato said, “If I could help out, I wanted to help out.” D’Amato was familiar with the Frank family from his time as a four-year CRHS tennis player, saying, “I saw Mel play a bunch of times. You couldn’t help but be impressed by Mel.” Kean, who is also a tennis coach and has run Park & Rec.’s Little People program, said she has known the Frank’s for a long time. “It’s a sad, emotional thing but it’s nice to do something for the family.”

We’re fine either way.
Business owner deserved better
And by gosh, I am comfortable. Tent-sized tie dye shirts. Baggy pants. No shoes (Well, that’s not different. I never wore them.) My hair has that “washand-go” look, because I just wash and go. No make-up. No more dangly earrings or frosted hair (yeah, I did that, too.) I’ve whittled everything down to the basics, and I no longer try to mold myself to everyone else’s expectations. What you see is what you get.
To the editor: The recent brush-off that P&Z gave to a long-time local business owner was petty and created an appearance that there decision was pre-determined and arbitrary. This was further demonstrated by one board member’s letter to the Town Times sounding an alert for the coming public hearing. The usual nimbys, gadflys and the regulars who oppose any type of development turned out to bad mouth the proposal with misinformation, dramatic stories,

and their own facts – Stories of traffic nightmares and trash strewn all over town. The idea that customers who drive up are much more likely to litter than those of us who park, walk in and carry purchases back to the car would ever do. Besides, Main Street Durham has practically always had traffic issues, and that traffic has been conveniently utilized to defeat other development proposals on Main Street. Mr. Batista has served Durham well, with jobs and tax revenue. He is an honorable businessman and deserves much better than the
town, but our actions don’t support that, why would qualified developers want to expend the time, money and effort to invest in Durham and try to navigate the minefield laid out in front of them? And where is the plan to deal with our fast-shrinking grand list, rising taxes, and reduced services conundrum?
But Dunkin’ isn’t the real issue. It’s a microcosm of a much bigger problem. That problem is the future and what it holds for the town of Durham and its taxpayers. If we claim we have a business-friendly environment in

CVEF promotes lifelong learning, its main mission, with annual grants. The foundation is not connected to the school system and often emphasizes that the educational
grants are not intended exclusively for projects benefiting students. “This is community at its best, said CVEF member Nancy Earls. The 2016 recipients come from a range of backgrounds and will target a range of interests and needs.
Heath said he was inspired by his brother’s efforts to find his Two of the projects connamesake. “It’s my brother’s cern local cemeteries. CVEF fault – he started chasing Wilawarded Robin Heath a grant liam Heath. I thought it would to plot a map of the grave sites be fun for other people to be in Middlefield’s Old North able to do that.

One other student, in addition to Bates, worked on a successful grant. Madison Terrill, a current CRHS junior, received a grant with CRHS teacher Christen Bertz to set up a local Safe Rides program. Safe Rides programs use volunteers to provide safe and anonymous rides with designated drivers on Friday and Saturday nights to residents of any age who need to get home safely. Retired outdoor education teacher Lorrie Martin and student Duncan Bates also won a grant for cemetery accessibility. Gravestones in the Old Durham Cemetery are also deteriorating and becoming difficult to read.
Talking about other potential projects like gravestone repair and mapping the unmarked graves, Heath said that cemetery projects have many facets requiring time and volunteers and are “the type of project that can take over.

Some of the headstones in the Old North Burying Ground are unreadable and some are toppled. If successful, the project will provide a GPS record of the locations available for use by the public.
Martin and Bates hope to use GR coding to allow visitors to, according to the presentation, “see photos, view writings and listen to audio memories of people buried there dating back to the early 1700s.

Students looking to add some piracy to their summer fun will be able to attend Durham Middlefield Youth and Family Services’ next Adventures in Cardboard camp, “Pirates, Parrots, and Planks,” thanks to a CVEF grant. Boys and girls will learn about pirates and build their own pirate gear, like ships, swords, and treasure chests out of cardboard.
Library Directory Trish Connolly Tomlinson thanked the CVEF for supporting their “out of the box thinking.”
and adults to explore nature. CVEF has helped fund Meigs’ Everybody Outside program in the past.
Another grant will continue the popular “Soup, Salad, and Learn” programs held by the Durham Senior Citizens Board and Amanda Pedersen at the Durham Public Library.
This year the Everybody Outside program will consist of a pre-school program, an after school program at Mica Ledges, and a series of nature walks with adult mentors and younger children.
Calling it a “return of sorts to Durham and Middlefield” after running programs in Middletown, Lucy Meigs won a grant to encourage children

A different grant will benefit CRHS band students. Tim Fisher, next year’s CRHS band instructor, won a grant to commission a composer to write a piece of music specifically for the band, allowing the students to follow the creative process and interact with the composer.
Retiring chorus teacher Lisa Larsen won a grant to form a “Neighborhood Chorus” of adults who wish to continue singing. According to the description, the songs “would be music from Broadway, Jazz, Pop, and novelty songs.”
The K-second grade clinic will be run by the Revolution’s Technical Staff with the help of parent volunteers. The Technical Staff will also provide technical and developmental support to all fall travel teams and coaches. Soccer teams are available from pre-K to U15 (open to all non-high school students born between Jan. 1, 2002 to Dec. 31, 2012.) The pre-K program will continue to participate in the Dinomites program. Register at coginchaugsoccer.org. Registration deadline is Aug. 15. The annual membership meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 10, 7 p.m., at the Middlefield Community Center. Prospective travel coaches should attend.
CVEF started giving out grants in 2009. The 10 grants given by CVEF in 2016 equal the highest total yet.
“There are kids out there who say they don’t have enough to do,” said DMYFS chair Tim Burt, who added that the camp would appeal to a sense of fun and creativity.
“You can’t have a conversation with Beethoven,” Fisher said at the ceremony. The piece will be played at a community concert with the composer in attendance and, when published, will always be linked with CVEF and CRHS.
Coginchaug Soccer Club has partnered with the New England Revolution Player Development Program for the fall 2016 program. Players learn all aspects of the game: ball mastery, speed of play, movement on and off the ball and coordination and balance. A fee is charged.
