Drop is top track performer Recent graduate is first CRHS athlete to earn yearly Gatorade honor By Mark Dionne Town Times
Jessica Drop of Durham has been named the Gatorade Connecticut Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year for 2015-16, becoming the first Coginchaug Regional High School athlete to win the prestigious award. The Class of 2016 graduate learned that she was nominated on graduation day and found out she had won a week later in a very modern fashion. “I actually found out on Twitter because they tagged me on something,”
Drop said. As a competitor familiar with the girls track athletes in the state, Drop admits to some surprise at being named the top girl. What might be even more surprising is the fact that this honored athlete did not take up running until her freshman year, and spent a few years disliking it.

Her perspective on running changed between her sophomore and junior years, perhaps a result of her competitive nature or the fact that she began training with her twin sister, Sam. Powder Ridge ski area transforms with new bike trails By Pete Paguaga Record-Journal staff
For the first time ever, the Powder Ridge ski area will be open to mountain bikers all over the region, this summer and fall. “There’s between three or four trails top to bottom,” said Ryland Parker, one of the trail builders. “Two trails through the woods right now.” On Saturday, June 18, the park opened the bike trails for season pass holders. On June 19, Powder Ridge hosted a Cycling Breakaway Benefit and a grand opening ceremony. The trails run down the mountain, taking riders through the woods, and include a handful of jumps, Parker said. “We really recommend that you have a sense of what you are doing,” said Parker, who has worked at Powder Ridge for the past two years. “Some bikes will not be able to handle it as well as others.” Powder Ridge will be running lifts to take riders to the top of the trails. “There is a hook on the side of the chair lift,” Parker said. “So you will ride up with your bike.” The bike trails will open every Friday from 3 to 9 p.m., See Trails, A7

The race Drop said she is most proud of is her firstplace finish in the 3,200 at the New England championship, where she achieved a personal best time of 10:17.54 and beat a longtime running rival. Her training has also evolved. “When I go out it’s peaceful now where it used to be a lot of work,” Drop said. Her coach, Lavinia Vigue, said in her nomination, “Jessica is a very driven individual. Gatorade Player/Athlete of the Year awards in each state are selected by a nominating process and a group of experts and journalists in partnership with USA Today Sports.
Also a volunteer mentor with the Go Far running program, Drop said, “I love that we’re becoming a running community and I hope it makes our track team even better.”
Just 606 athletes are named Gatorade state players of the year across the country. Of those, 12 will be named national players of the year and two will become national Gatorade Male and Female Athlete of the Year. Drop appreciates the scope of the award and said, “It was not just athletics. It was overall academics and my volunteering, so I thought it was a good representation of my high school career where I’ve worked hard to be an athlete but to have academics and volunteering as well.” The local running star is involved in both Best Buds and Special Olympics and is a member of the National

Jess and Sam Drop will both run for the University of Georgia next year. Jess will run cross country and indoor and outdoor track. “I’m going to do whatever my coach tells me to do, but I’ll probably be staying with the mile and two-mile,” Jess said. “It’s sort of scary because I’ll definitely have a lot more competition than I’ve seen so I’ll definitely have to learn a new racing style, but I’m excited to go down South and learn how they do things.”

IT’S ALL GOOD
Love letters By Diana Carr
I miss my Swedish grandson, Hayden, more than words can say. My almost-6-year-old angel boy is thousands of miles away, and I feel every one of them. But a friend had a wonderful idea. She suggested that I write letters to Hayden and send them to him when he’s older and has learned English. I like it. It will seem like those miles between us have shrunk, just a little bit. So I write to him on a regular basis now. I write as if he was sitting right in front of me and I am talking to him, plain and simple. I tell him how much I miss him and what a wonderful boy he is, and how I wish we lived just down the street from each other and how much fun we would have every day, if we did. Christina Pen and her family, of Durham, came to the state capitol to celebrate Pen’s graduation from the General Assembly’s internship program. Pen worked throughout the 2016 Legislative Session as Sen. Ted Kennedy, Jr.’s intern.
Letter to the Editor A strong ally To the editor: In this whirlwind world, with all its rapid changes, we profit from people who foresee trends into the future. As our elected officials, politicians should look not only at the needs for today, but also at the demands for success tomorrow. The growth of the economy in Connecticut depends partly on the availability of workers’ housing. Senator Dante Bartolomeo has been a strong supporter of housing. Through her
assistance, the Middlefield Housing Authority obtained a very important loan from the Department of Housing. This loan will enable a survey of the authority’s land, assess the potential for a septic, and determine if the water supply is adequate for additional housing. Middlefield has high housing costs, and an average worker can’t afford to live in the town. Senator Bartolomeo is a visionary who sees the need for increased moderate income housing in the future. Housing that is part of the local community
can strengthen the economy with temporary and permanent jobs, tax revenues, and spending in businesses. The grant that Senator Bartolomeo obtained is a step toward a stronger economic future. Senator Dante Bartolomeo can continue to be a voice for us in state government. A vote for her in the fall elections will provide a strong ally in Middlefield’s housing future. Alma Elder Middlefield

I was there again when he was 4, I write, and this time when he got up in the morning the first thing he would do is run to me, because he knew we were going to play non-stop, all day long. I write that we played with trucks and trains and dinosaurs and we watched his favorite DVDs and we would each pretend we were one of the cats and would meow at each other (We’d finally found a common language.) And I gave him my glowin-the-dark Buddha figurine, which he would not let out of his sight, he loved it so, and he even slept with it. The first one when he was two months old, and such a beautiful baby, and I spent a lot of my visit just holding him, and I pushed him in his carriage when he, Mama, and I went for walks. When he was 2 years old and we played hide and seek and he was so good at it, and we did the Litter Box Dance (as taught to us by the animated movie, Puss N’ Boots; I’m sure those moves will come in handy when he goes to his prom.) And the first morning I was there and still sleeping, he peeked in and did not know this stranger, and so he ran away. But the second morning I woke to find him sitting next to me, just looking at me. I guess I “passed muster,” because we were fast friends after that.
The years will grow my little guy up, and my computer and I will be right there with him. He will start the first grade in the fall (there’s no kindergarten in Sweden), and on that day I will write that I am thinking of him, and that I hope he is having a good day and that he See Carr, A10

String of overnight car break-ins in Durham By Mark Dionne Town Times
After a rash of car breakins in Durham at the end of June, State Police and Durham First Selectman Laura Francis are warning residents about leaving cars unlocked and valuables in vehicles. According to State Police, the most recent thefts, all from vehicles, took place in the neighborhoods of Oak Terrace, Austin Road, Tuttle Road, and Anna Terrace. The total number of recent break-ins numbered approximately 12.
other items taken. Both Anna Terrace and Austin Road are dead end streets. Troop F is investigating all the break-ins and reported that similar crimes have been committed in Killingworth, East Haddam, Haddam and Essex. This is not the first time the area has been hit by car break-ins. In October, 2015, several vehicles were broken into in Middlefield’s Lake Beseck neighborhood with cash and credit cards stolen.

Some tips for the ladies ones with the least amount of them consistently have the best chance at success, as far as ball striking is concerned.
By Tim Buczak Record-Journal staff
The question I usually get from ladies is “how do I hit the ball farther?” The first step in achieving more distance is by strengthening the grip.
Golf is not a one-size-fits-all game. Whether the golfer is a woman or man, junior or senior, tall or short, slim or stocky, healthy or injured, all play a part in how he or she can naturally swing a golf club.
Now, ladies, do you pick up the strap of your purse with your fingers or your That’s what made working for Doc Sut- palm? hand will then fit on the grip covering the left thumb completely so that the lifeline of your right hand connects to the right side of the left thumb. The “V” made by the thumb and pointer fingers of the right hand should now point at the right shoulder.
A diverse group of vendors plan to offer vegetables, fruits, flowers, spices, honey, Italian ice, shellfish, raw milk, yogurt and cheese, baked goods, breads, quiches, pies, kettle corn, and more. Weekly guest vendors will offer information on their non-profit organizations or their products and services.
To be a long hitter or to at least reach your potential, remember that a strong grip leads to a strong shot, whereas a weak, “palmy” grip leads to a weak shot, and possibly a lost purse. The strongest body part for most women is the legs. They are very flexible, compared to me, which can lead to a common swing fault: swaying the lower body on the backswing. Whenever a golfer sways their lower body, the player can no longer pivot around the back hip and make a good coil in the backswing. Loss of power and

body control is the result. The good news is that I have a drill to help with the sway. Place an alignment stick in the ground behind the back foot so it is about an inch or two outside the golfer’s back hip (right hip for a righty). Make practice swings and do not bump the alignment stick with the back hip. A better coil should occur. You should feel as if the right hip is moving behind your back, not sifting laterally. Once you get comfortable with that, try this same drill while hitting some golf balls. The single most common error women tend to have with the golf swing is getting the club way too high at the top of the backswing. This upright position unfortunately leads to more and more issues for the downswing: a steep downswing (fat shots or popped up drives), an open clubface (slices and weak shots) and an out-to-in downswing (which leads to all of the above).

The businesses helped shape the proposal and will provide guidance on the candidate selection process. It will also identify workers for training, share job openings with project staff, interview candidates and hire candidates, Harrison said. The Midstate Chamber of Commerce submitted a letter of support for the grant in February, said Moore, who is president of the chamber, which serves Meriden and Wallingford.

The way you are going to fix this issue is to trick the mind. The next time you are at the driving range, try to get the club as low as you can at the top. A qualified PGA professional should also see if you are overdoing it, which is unlikely, or if you are not swinging low (flat) enough.

ble to participate. Medicare won’t cover treatment overseas, so a separate insurance plan may be required. If you think you may return to live in the U.S. one day, you may want to keep paying Medicare premiums to maintain future eligibility for the program. Also check on the quality of health care services in your intended new home to determine if medical capabilities meet your expectations. Financial matters - Determine how the currency exchange rate will affect your expenses. Keep in mind that your expenses may vary, particularly if you want to travel within your new region or rely on public transportation. You may want to transfer some money to a bank ac-
