Durham selectmen endorse, amend POCD By Mark Dionne Town Times

At its regular meeting on Monday, July 11, the Durham Board of Selectmen endorsed the recently completed Plan of Conservation and Development and asked that the Planning and Zoning Commission, which wrote the document, pass it.

‘Miss Alex’ joins library family By Mark Dionne Town Times

After a variety of experiences gained through a collection of libraries, Alexandra Klaus is ready to settle in with one title: children’s librarian at the Durham Public Library.

Klaus, who goes by “Miss Alex” for the kids, said she has been welcomed by the community since her start in the last week of May. “I wouldn’t have taken this job if everyone [here] wasn’t ridiculously nice,” Klaus said. “They did their part in convincing me I See Klaus, A15

Coginchaug rolled over East Hampton and Chester/ Deep River in pool play by scores of 22-0 and 17-0, and also successfully defeated respectable opponents Old Saybrook, 7-1, and Cromwell, 5-3.

DeMartino opened the game with strikeouts of Middletown/Killingworth’s powerful top three of Tessa Wills, Boone and Ella McGlynn, setting a good tone for the locals. But Coginchaug struggled to reach base on Boone. DeMartino reached in the fourth, as she was hit in the left hand by a pitch, and Alex Fitzpatrick laid down a crafty bunt single, but that was all Coginchaug could muster off of Boone through the first five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Allison Strang hit a oneout double off of Boone for Coginchaug’s second hit, but was left stranded, sending the game to extra innings. Middletown picked up solid singles off of DeMartino in the seventh, but, again, Donlan put out the fire, as she threw out both girls attempting to steal second, including an acrobatic high helmet tag by shortstop Ava Marenna to secure the third out. A shoestring catch by Rhea Patel in left field also played no small part in keeping the game scoreless.

Middletown/Killingworth fared no better at the plate, picking up its first hit off DeMartino, a single to center field by Boone, in the top of the sixth. However, she

Cortland is a 9-year-old, male tabby cat. He is very affectionate. He loves constant attention, will follow you, sit next to you and beg to be petted. He doesn’t like to be picked up. Cortland has an allergy to dust in carpets, so a home with very little carpeting would be best. He gets along very well with other cats and probably would be fine with a friendly dog. For more information and to meet Cortland, call 860-344-9043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit CatTalesCT.org/cats/Cortland.

IT’S ALL GOOD

Roommate issues By Diana Carr

My kitties, Shiloh and Dakota, feel like they haven’t gotten enough “air time” lately. I disagree. I think, and you probably do, too, that they have gotten plenty of attention in this column. But let’s humor them anyway.

Young entrepreneurs learn how to do some haggling By Mark Dionne Town Times

The annual Kids-Only Tag Sale took place on the lawn at the Durham Public Library on Saturday, July 9. Youngsters age 5 to 18, working with adult supervision, manned tables selling as many items as they could. The annual tag sale is organized by Durham Public Library Assistant Patti Holden, who said she remembered the fun her now-grown children had when the library held a Kids-Only Tag Sale years ago. Holden said she approached the library administration four years ago about bringing the event back, and it has become an annual tradition since. “It helps them learn about making change and organizing their own belongings,” Holden said. The event, with kids staffing their own tables and visiting other tables creates what Holden calls “a nice feeling of community.” Most of the kids said they had an easy time choosing items for the sale. Emma Samperi said she picked “things I don’t play with any more” like old

Emma Samperi said she had an easy time choosing items See Sale, A13 to sell, especially her “princess stuff.”

Oh, where to begin? Let’s start with the chewing. Shiloh chews anything he can wrap his teeth around, which is just about everything. I will be sitting on my futon in the evening watching TV, and I will swear that a horde of beavers has slipped in. I need only turn my head 45 degrees to the left to see my feline friend on the other end of the futon, chomping furiously on the posts that are holding everything together. He is going at it from every angle, like this is the tastiest piece of wood that anyone could ever hope for. I, of course, immediately try to disrupt his guilty pleasure (although I don’t think he feels the least bit guilty), but he keeps coming back to it. As of now, three of those posts are on their way to becoming toothpicks. So if you hear a resounding boom, you will know that Shiloh has, once again, had his way with my futon, and this time I have gone crashing to the floor. At which point I think a bean bag would be my next option. If my hair is looking a bit shorter to you these days, or perhaps crooked, well, I think it’s safe to say that Shiloh is the culprit here. Let me explain. I have a portable sauna, which consists of a large dome placed over a smaller one, and I lie inside it with only my head sticking out. And while baking myself alive, I used to coat my tresses with coconut oil, which, rumor has it, makes for a great conditioner. Used to. It didn’t go well. See Carr, A12

OPINION

A change for the better One of Connecticut high school sports’ most discussed — and disliked — rules is off the books, for now at least. The CIAC Score Management policy was put in place a decade ago to dissuade Connecticut high school football teams from running up the score on opponents. Under this rule, a coach could be suspended for one game for rolling up a 50-plus point victory. When enacted in 2006, the “50-point rule” made headlines, sparking a nation-wide debate. Critics said the rule punished coaches for having more-focused, better-prepared troops, and made a mockery of the sport, while proponents of the policy believed it helped prevent less-talented, perhaps younger teams, from being humiliated on the field. Dakota has also been a chomper. When she was a kitten, she reveled in shredding paper. Any paper she could find. I found him the other day trying to chew his way to freedom. He and Dakota are indoor kitties, so all the window screens are held firmly in place with about a thousand nails, so that they can get up on the windowsill and not fall out. Over the years one screen in particular, the one facing the backyard, has suffered little tears from various kitties’ claws, which I took care of in a most professional manner. I covered them with Scotch tape, which, apparently, is not doing such a great job. I got quite the surprise recently when I walked into the bedroom and found that Shiloh had picked at one of those weensy holes until he had made it big enough to stick his head through it.

Shiloh does funny things, too. Sometimes he still likes to hop into my refrigerator when I open it. Selectmen John Szewczyk, who, like all three selectmen, endorsed the plan, said he did not want to see mixed use in the Historic District, but “at the same time I understand that this is a plan and we’re not changing zoning. The language of the motion was also slightly different than has been discussed in the past. The vote was to endorse passage by P&Z. In the past, the selectmen have talked about passing or rejecting the POCD. Ultimate POCD responsibility lies with P&Z, which has to pass the document and can even do so against the BOS wishes with a two-thirds majority. P&Z will hold a public hearing on the POCD on Wednesday, July 13, 8 p.m. at CRHS.

Officials paid more attention to the split between planning and zoning. Frank DeFelice, chair of P&Z, said at Monday’s BOS meeting that outlining a zone where things can not go is a zoning regulation. “All of this says ‘consider.’ None of this [in the POCD] is a zoning regulation, DeFelice said.

residents also consistently opposed the POCD as being too permissive to business development near or within homes. Main Street resident Duncan Milne, at the June 27 Public Hearing, said that the document gave too much “elbow room to P&Z and pointed out that most non-industrial businesses add little to the local tax base.

Raised in Glastonbury, Klaus went to Temple University, graduated from UConn with a classics degree and received a masters of library science from Southern Connecticut State University.

coming so I have to offer them something worth coming to,” she said.

Before her interview, Klaus, who now lives in Middletown, researched Durham online. After more than a month in town, Klaus is getting to know Durham.

Klaus is excited to continue some of the popular children’s programming like Saturday story time and Lego Robotics and also wants to try new things, saying, “I’m really throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.”

“It’s really ingrained in the community to appreciate the services we provide, which is so nice. I don’t have to convince a lot of people to go to the library, they’re already

As she continues to settle in, Klaus said the one thing she would like the community to know about her is “I really want to talk to you all the time – it’s way more interesting than whatever I’m doing.”

The job description of children’s librarian at the Durham Public Library was intimidating, but Klaus wanted to try. “They had a laundry list of things they

The children’s librarian position in Durham covers children from birth to grade six. Motioning to the shelves in the children’s area, Klaus said, “There are actually three or four collections here.”

She also worked part time as the teen librarian at the Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library in Old Lyme.

Originally, she thought she would be a teen librarian but discovered a knack for children’s programming. Whenever she had opportunities to gravitate towards children’s programming, she took them. “It helped me learn all about children’s libraries so I could come here,” Klaus said.

An avid reader, Klaus keeps up with children’s books, but also explores a range of literature as a reader on the High

After graduation, Klaus worked at several libraries and had multiple titles as she searched for a full time job. One stop was at the Guilford Smith Library in South Windham. At that small library, she wound up doing a bit of everything, covering children’s programming, teen programming and adult programming, cataloging and reference, and filling in for the director when needed. “There was only one desk, so I sat there,” Klaus joked.

At the Cora J. Belden Library in Rocky Hill, she worked as a part time reference librarian and began a shift to children’s programming.

There, battling back from a 1-2 count, Patel managed a one-out walk to get on base. Audrey Labasi, inserted as a pinch runner, then stole second – the first attempt at a steal by Coginchaug all afternoon. The throw by the catcher, McGlynn, went off the glove of the shortstop
