Great season comes to a close Foreigner It could be the best in Coginchaug Little League history By Mark Dionne Town Times
headlines the Durham Fair By Mark Dionne Town Times
When Coginchaug’s Little League team in the 11-12 division fell 6-3 to Fairfield-American on July 30 in Manchester to become the runner-up in the state tournament, it closed what could be considered the most remarkable season in Coginchaug Little League history. To advance that far, the 11-12 team had to win the District 9 title, something Coginchaug’s 11-12 baseball teams have only done five times in 60 years of play, and win the Section 3 title, something that had previously been accomplished only once, by the 2013 team. The Coginchaug girls in the 11-12 softball team also won the District 9 title, becoming the first 11-12 girls team to win the district title

The Durham Fair Association has announced the headlining music lineup for the 2016 Durham Fair and Saturday Main Stage act Foreigner is returning rock to the Durham Fair. Foreigner, touring on the 40th anniversary of its founding in 1976, will be joined by the country band Old Dominion as Friday headliners and Motown legend Martha Reeves and the Vandellas on Sunday. Combining a classic rock act, a new country band, and a soul singer creates as diverse a line up as the Durham Fair has had in recent memory. As a Durham Fair press release put it, “The Durham Fair has hit a musical trifecta this year with a fantastic variety of celebrated artists.” The Durham Fair has not had a rock act on the Main Stage since a well-received show by REO Speedwagon in 2010. Durham Fair Entertainment Director Wendy Manemeit told the Town Times, “Every year we seek both rock and country for the Main Stage. However, it’s the factors beyond our control that drive us to our final decision, such as routing, availability and price.” Foreigner is one of the best-selling classic rock acts of all time, with 10 albums at least platinum and numerous classic rock staples like “Juke Box Hero” and “Hot Blooded.” Their album “4” remains one of the best-selling albums of all time and “I Want to Know What Love Is” became a quintessential 80’s hit. Foreigner will arrive on the Durham Fair stage with only guitarist Mick Jones as an original member. Original vocalist Lou Gramm has not been with Foreigner since 2003. Foreigner still tours extensively and often with Styx and Journey, completing a trifecta of bands without their original vocalists.

Countdown to the Durham Fair has begun The Durham Agricultural Fair Association officially kicked off The Durham Fair Centennial Celebration June 16, as nearly 400 Durham and Middlefield residents, distinguished guests and state and local officials herded into the Cow Palace at the Durham Fair Grounds to ring in the 100th anniversary of The Durham Fair.

The event also premiered a commemorative documentary-style video, featuring a narrative and pictorial history of the fair with interviews from past and present Durham Fair officials. Coginchaug High School students Matt Woznyk and Flynn Molkenthin produced the video under the direction of their teacher, Ryan Donecker.
Attendees were treated to an old-fashioned family-style pig roast, live entertainment by local bands Jackson Hill and Bourbon Chaser, and a sampling of the historical June 16, 1916 meeting where it was decided to hold the first 2019 marks the official “Year Durham Fair. of Celebration,” the year of “We are extremely excited the actual 100th Durham Fair. to usher in the 100th anniThe fair lapsed as a result of versary of our beloved fair,” the Hurricane of 1938, and said Daniel Miramant, presWorld War II forced the town ident of the Durham Agrito forego festivities in 1942, cultural Fair Association. 1943 and 1944. “The Durham Fair serves as a A variety of fun community model for community spirit activities are being planned and volunteerism that has made the fair the overwhelm- for the years leading up to the 100th Durham Fair. ing success that it is.” Official centennial merchanThe evening was full of surdise will be on sale at the upprises, including a visit from coming Durham Fair, which state Sen. Mirrors have not always been kind to me. In fact, sometimes they are downright insulting! Oh, we got along well enough back in the Middle Ages, when I was young and thin. I’d be turning this way and that, checking myself out before that all-important date, and finally my mirror would give me the thumbs-up. Although it did often suggest that I do something with those flyaway hairs.

has sung backup for Marvin Gaye and duets with James Brown. Her songs, such as “Heat Wave” and “Nowhere to Run,” are often featured in movies or covered by acts as diverse as The Grateful Dead and Laura Nyro. With the recent success of Old Dominion, and the numerous songs of Foreigner and Martha Reeves, the number of hit songs played on the Main Stage of the 97th Annual Durham Fair will be high. Manemeit said, “A lot of hard work yielded a wonderful diverse line up this year – part knowledge and part luck.”

since 2007. “We’ve never won both the boys and the girls in the 12,” Little League President Scott Strang said. This season also saw the 50/70 baseball team win the Section 3 title and the state title before losing at the regional level in Long Island. Strang said that this season could be considered the most successful ever, both because of the titles and the competitiveness shown by the teams in their final games. With a 19-2 victory over Brooklyn-Pomfret to advance to the Fairfield-American title game, the 11-12 team, coached by Joe Fournier, became the first Coginchaug team to log a win in the state tournament, although the format has changed slightly since 2013. Fournier said, “Our goal was to win, but we understand that finishing No. 2 in the entire state is a special accomplishment.” According to Strang, the 11-12 division is the most competitive division in Little League because of the number of teams. Strang calls the 11-12 team’s season “probably the most impressive because that’s so hard to do.”
Fournier explains, “Generally, it is difficult to win at the [11-12] level because all the towns gear up for it, almost every Little League submits a team, and almost all of the eligible players seek to participate. Since the regional winners play in a worldwide tournament in front of a national television audience on ESPN, the [11-12] tournament has taken on a life of its own.” Strang likes to point out Coginchaug’s record playing against much bigger towns. According to Strang, of the last four teams at the state level, Coginchaug is the smallest. For the 2010 Census, Fairfield had a population just under 60,000 while the combined population of Durham and Middlefield is about 12,000, or around onefifth the size. Reflecting on the successful season, Fournier said, “For the players, their families, the coaches, and our town, it was our destiny to all come together this way and execute the way we did. Everyone made a huge commitment and it paid equally huge dividends. I mean this sincerely: the opportunity to coach and lead these young men was a gift, one that I will never forget and one that I could never re-pay.”
At the intermediate 50/70 level, like their younger counterparts in 11-12, Coginchaug also faced Fairfield-American but won the state title with two victories in the best-ofthree series. The intermediate level, for players older than the 11-12 group, is known as the 50/70 league. Named after the extended distances for pitching (50 feet) and base paths (70 feet), the 50/70 league was introduced in 2010 as a bridge between the smaller Little League diamond and the larger Junior/Senior/Big League size. Coginchaug’s 50/70 team advanced to the East Region Tournament in Long Island but eventually lost to Vineland, New Jersey, 3-2. Coincidentally, Vineland is Strang’s hometown, but the league president said his support was firmly behind Coginchaug. The game was close, with Coginchaug fell just a hit or a lucky bounce away from winning the regionals. Strang said of the softball team, “That team was like seven 11 year olds ... we were small.” The team won a dramatic extra innings game over Middletown, 1-0, to win the District title, but lost twice to a dominant Waterford team in their Sectional tournament. “We had to play

PRECISION
No tickets are needed for Dibiase’s Victory Christian Church appearances. The events are free, however, a free-will offering will be taken each day. For more information, call the church office at 860-346-6771.
Come to me, all who labor and are unburdened, and I will give you rest. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Classes are scheduled as follows:
SERVICE DIRECTORY
Here is part of Dibiase’s testimony, regarding his life-changing decision to follow Christ:
Scripture Bit Solution
Durham Recreation schedules self-defense classes for youth and adults. Classes are scheduled month to month, on an ongoing basis. Self-defense training provides additional benefits such as self-confidence, physical and mental health and positive character development.
Rental opportunity - The Middlefield Federated Church, 402 Main St., offers the free use of its building to community-based groups that need a place to meet or host activities. The church has several spacious meeting rooms of different sizes and includes carpeted parlors for smaller gatherings, as well as a large open hall with tables, seating and a fully equipped kitchen attached. There is also a spacious parking lot. For more information or to reserve a space, call the church office at 860-349-9881 or email office@mfcct.org.
After six years with the WWF, seeing his likeness made into action figures, characters in video games and his face on everything from T-shirts to pin-ball machines, Dibiase ended his active career at the end of 1993 due to a neck injury.
“At the height of a tremendously successful professional wrestling career, I enjoyed what fame and fortune brought me. However, I found myself empty and unhappy. I filled my life with drugs, alcohol, and adulterous affairs. At the end of my rope, and very nearly losing my wife and family, I fell in love with Jesus when I was told that He would forgive me and restore me, in spite of the countless times I had turned my back on Him …”

Dibiase traveled the world with the WWF, wrestling in some of the biggest venues in the world.
