Another strong year for Envirothon team The Coginchaug Regional High School Envirothon team had a successful year in 2016. The team placed second, with a score of 485 points, at the state competition. Housatonic Valley Agriscience won the environmental field competition with a score of 486.5. The Coginchaug Envirothon team was composed of veterans and rookies. Seniors Matthew Sawicki and Lilian Zhou are seasoned competitors, having been part of the 2015 Connecticut championship team and going to the North American Envirothon national competition last summer. Their experience was a huge asset to the team. Junior Troy Willis has been a member of the team for three years but this was his first year competing on the main team. Junior Amelia Gagner and senior Kyle Borbas were new members this year and proved to be extremely helpful contributors to Coginchaug’s success. Literacy Volunteers of Central CT (LVCC) held its 14th annual Scrabble Challenge fundraiser this past spring.
Ashlyn Lower, the sixth team member, competed as a “wildcard”/alternate.

Challenge supports Literacy Volunteers of Central CT This past spring, the Literacy Volunteers of Central CT held its 14th annual Scrabble Challenge, a fundraising event designed to raise money for its adult and family literacy programs. The event was held at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville and raised more than $29,000 for the organization. “Literacy Volunteers of Central CT provides English reading, writing and speaking tutoring services to hundreds of adults in the region, all free of charge,” LVCC Executive Director Maria Simao said. “Whether it is getting a better job, becoming a United States citizen, or simply being able to read a
book to their child, we have seen our program help many students achieve their goals. Our annual Scrabble Challenge helps us continue to offer these free services and supports our tutor training program.” Participants played Scrabble in teams of 6 to 10, working cooperatively on one board with the potential to win prizes. The event also included a family style dinner, auctions and more. Founded in 1978, LVCC provides small group and one-on-one literacy tutoring to over 400 adults in the communities of New Britain, Middletown, Bristol, Berlin, Burlington, Cromwell, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Haddam, Kensington, Marlborough, Middlefield, Plainville, Portland,
and Southington. Tutors are all volunteers and receive high quality training, free of charge, prior to becoming a Literacy Volunteer. In addition to the adult literacy program, LVCC founded the Central CT Family Literacy Center, which provides educational programs to low-literate mothers with children under the age of 8 who need to learn English to support their children’s success in school, or to help them earn their GED. The center provides childcare for approximately 20 children while mothers are in class. Meriden-Markham Airport seeks to grow MERIDEN — It’s been 70 years since two Quonset huts were installed as hangars at Meriden-Markham Airport and the current six T-hangars are no longer enough for plane owners awaiting space, airport officials said.
Battista also asked the city to approve borrowing $1 million to build new hangars and install a 10,000 gallon fuel tank. Both measures were sent to the City Council’s Finance Committee for a public hearing and discussion.
“There is a real shortage of hangars in Connecticut,” said Mark Poole, co-owner of Meriden Aviation Center, the one-year-old flight school at the airport. “We have 50 individuals on a waiting list.”
The hangars can generate $375 to $400 per month, said Wilma Petro, the city’s purchasing agent and representative to the airport. The airport is asking for 10 T-hangars, and six box hangers. The $1.3 million includes site work, engineering and electrical work. The airport has the necessary building permits to begin construction.
U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-5th District, visited the airport Thursday, Aug. 4 to recognize entrepreneurs and learn about the challenges faced by startups like the flight school. The Meriden Aviation Center serves several*Connecticut towns, including Meriden, Cheshire, Wallingford, Middlefield and Middletown. As a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, Esty said she is aware of aviation industry challenges, such as an aging pilot base, and a shortage of Federal Aviation Administration inspectors.
“Our economy needs all of this,” Carrozzella said. “This is a big field for the economy. It will grow the airport and bring us more fuel business, tiedowns and hangar rentals. ”

The Meriden Aviation Center also leases planes to licensed pilots and offers retraining for pilots hoping to sharpen their skills. The airport is also home to the Civil Air Patrol and a program that allows students from Wilcox Technical High

Free, reduced-price school meal guidelines The Regional School District 13 announced its policy for determining eligibility of children may receive free or reduced-price meals served under the National School Lunch Program. Local school officials have adopted the United States Department of Agriculture’s Income Eligibility Guidelines for family size and income criteria for determining eligibility. The income guidelines (shown on the chart) will be used from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017 for determining eligibility of participants for free and reduced-price meals. The income calculations are made based on the following formulas: Monthly income is calculated by dividing the annual income by 12; twice monthly income is computed by dividing annual income by 24; income received every two weeks is calculated by dividing annual income by 26; and weekly income is computed by dividing annual income by 52. All numbers are rounded upward to the next whole dollar. Children from families whose income is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. The application form and instructions are available on the Regional School District 13 website: www. rsd13ct.org, in the School Lunch Information Session. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households should fill out the application and return it to any District 13 school. Only one application is required per household and an application for free or reducedprice benefits cannot be approved unless it contains
complete eligibility information as indicated on the application and instructions. The information provided on the application is confidential and will be used only for the purposes of determining eligibility and for administration and enforcement of the lunch. Note that the district may share your eligibility information with education, health, and nutrition programs to help them evaluate, fund, or determine benefits for their programs, auditors for program reviews, and law enforcement officials to help them look into violations of program rules. Under the provisions of the policy for determining eligibility for free and reduced-price meals, the Determining Official, Sue Gaudreau, email: sgaudreau@rsd13.org will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent is dissatisfied with the ruling of the determining official, he/she may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. If he/ she wishes to make a formal appeal, a request either orally or in writing, may be made to Robert Moore, Chair, Board of Education, Regional School District 13, P O Box 190, Durham, CT 06422 for a hearing to appeal the decision. The policy contains an outline of the hearing procedure. Each school and the central office of the school district has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by an interested party. If a household member becomes unemployed or if household size changes at any time, the family should contact the school to file a new application. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for reduced-price meals, free meals, or free milk, if the family income falls at or below the levels shown in the Income Guidelines. Questions regarding the application process may be directed to the determining official at 860-349-7200, ext. 237.

IT’S ALL GOOD
Cloudy, with a chance of enlightenment be transformed into a yogi, immersed in tranquility and bliss. Well, not so much. From the second my tushy hits the cushion, my mind is off and running, and it is not the least bit interested in coughing up the peace and harmony I have asked of it. It’s a recalcitrant thing, to be sure, and not given over to any sort of taming. But I do try. I start off by bestowing blessings upon my two sons
and my grandson and my kitties and myself, because I don’t think you can have too many blessings in your life. And it takes me forever to do this! I’ll begin by surrounding my loved ones with love and light, imploring the heavens for their safe passage throughout the day, and life, and the next thing I know I’m wondering what I will have for supper, and what I should wear for my upcoming reunion, and when the squash

that I planted might want to make an appearance. I think sometimes I doze off. I hope my family has not been waiting around for me to reel in my mind before they get on with their day. So after an eternity of stops and starts with this bestowing of the blessings thing, comes phase two. Phase two is when I patiently wait for the Universe to enlighten me with Its wisdom. Again, not so much. I don’t think the Universe is at fault here. It’s me. I can’t seem to get two thoughts going in the same direction. I’ve read that when we meditate, we should see our mind as the sky and our thoughts as the clouds just passing by. We are not to cling to the clouds. I cling. There’s a constant monologue taking up residence inside my noggin. “Did I mow my way through all my snacks already? I hate it when that happens. Okay, how many more days until I can get to the store and fill the coffers back up?” “Wow, something sure does itch. What bit me now? Summer is great, but does every insect on the planet have to nibble on me?” Okay, back to center. Breathe, breathe. “I wonder if there’s anything good on TV tonight. The new fall shows are just around the corner. They’ll soften the blow of summer being over. Oh, noooooo, summer is almost over!” Okay, don’t hold onto the clouds, don’t hold See Carr, A14
