Valerie Swiantek, a first and second grade teacher at John Lyman Elementary School, has been named the RSD13 Teacher of the Year for 2016-2017.

The Corn Maze opened at Lyman Orchards on Saturday, Sept. 3 for its 17th season.

Swiantek is starting her 10th full year at Lyman and approaches teaching with the enthusiasm and good nature she is known for. “The best part of teaching is from 8:30 to 12:15 and then from 1:15 to 3:15 when the kids are in the room. It’s the learning from them and watching them grow ... It doesn’t get better than that,” Swiantek said.

Past images cut into the corn field at the intersection of Routes 147 and 157 in Middlefield have included Yankees and Red Sox logos, Pez Candy, and the Statue of Liberty.

Since graduating from Central Connecticut State University, Swiantek has made Lyman her professional home. Hired as a long term substitute in January of 2007, she was hired permanently as a “1-2 teacher” when the position became available and has even kept the same classroom for 10 years “which is really amazing,” she said.

In recognition of Lyman Orchards’ 275th year, the image in the 2016 corn field maze is the Lyman Homestead, which is also being used for the special anniversary logo.

The Lyman community of teachers made helped Swiantek get started in her profession. “It takes about 10 minutes to settle in at Lyman school. Everyone is so helpful and helpful where they mean it.”

“We were looking for something that would be recognizable as Lyman Orchards,” said John Lyman, executive vice president of Lyman Orchards. Before settling on the homestead, designers considered different ideas, like

As a more experienced teacher, Swiantek still sees the professional community at Lyman as helpful. “With the district changing in general we’ve had quite a few new people come on ... and the same kind of support is definitely there.” While teaching, Swiantek earned her masters in elementary reading at what was then St. Joseph’s College. That continuing education, she said, translated directly to her See Swiantek, A15

IT’S ALL GOOD

Making friends with September By Diana Carr Special to Town Times

September is tip-toeing in, and it usually brings with it a bout of melancholy. I love summer so, and bidding it a fond adieu has never been my strong suit. Maybe it’s because, as I write this, the days are still in the 80s and my pool is still warm and

summer isn’t done with us yet, but this year I’m okay with September. This year I think we shall be friends. The month really does have a lot going for it. The days are mellow. The birds are still singing. The winter garb hasn’t been dug out yet. I’m still barefoot. And maybe it’s from all those years of starting school this month, but I feel a rush of new beginnings. It’s my own personal New Year. In my mind the summer is for lolling about and squeezing every bit of juiciness out of life — and it is juicy — and not giving a great deal of serious thought to much of anything. Just going with the flow of these “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.” But September makes me stand up a little straighter, on the inside. Has me taking a reckoning of things. It’s time to get back in the game. To re-enter the world. To look ahead and see where I want to place my next steps on the path. The possibilities are titillating. During these past months I have had ab-

solutely no time to do this, of course, because summer has cast its spell on me, and my pool demands, in no uncertain terms, that I pay homage to it. Every day, and for hours at a time. But when my pool and I must finally part ways — and yes, that will be sometime this month — I am free to tend to things that need tending to. This September will be glorious, for so many reasons. For starters, my reunion (I won’t tell you which one, but suffice it to say we are now a gathering of grandmas and grandpas) is on Sept. 10, and I am so excited about it. For those few hours we’ll laugh — often and loudly — and we’ll reminisce and we’ll be 18 again, and it will do our spirits and our bodies a world of good. I imagine there will be a spring in all of our steps as we head out to our cars after the last hugs and goodbyes. And once again I will realize how lucky I am to have spent my growing-up years with these good people.

My older son’s birthday is Sept. 15. He has always told me that it’s more of a celebration for me than for him, and I think he’s right. I still get excited about my boys’ birthdays because all day long I really do think about how lucky I am to be their Mom. It will be a good day for me, and I hope for him, too. And when my pool has finally turned me loose (it really is very time consuming, this floating around for hours, reading and drinking green tea), I will have other things to fill the void. I’ll put my columns into a book and self-publish on Amazon, like I did last year. I want to comb the beach for driftwood, maybe decorating it when I get home. I intend to take up photography. I’ll be taking a class on how to make jewelry out of gemstones. And I’ll be looking forward to pumpkins and mums and brisk days and the upcoming holidays. And let’s not forget that all our shows are starting up

again. I do so love TV, and though all the “experts” warn us that it is not good for our minds or our bodies to spend countless hours in front of it, I’m going to risk it and hope that I am none the worse for wear at the end of the evening. I’ll nestle into my futon with assorted goodies and beverages next to me, wrapped up in a favorite blanket, with my rock salt lamps plugged in and my incense burning and my kitties curled up next to me, and I will think that Christmas has come early. So yes, summer is on the wane, but there is a lot of good still to be had, so I’m hanging tough. Well, at least until it’s time to put on shoes. Republicans have a different vision. We believe in creating an economy that incentivizes development by reducing burdens for everyone and moving government out of the way. We need to give every business large and small the same advantage. We have to show job creators that our state is dedicated to helping them succeed, not squeezing them for every penny.

Voters urged to be alert of pre-election scams The bureau warns local residents to expect calls from polling firms, charities and political parties and said the situation is further complicated by exemptions to the “Do Not Call” registry rules. Charities, politicians and pollsters are exempt from the registry, which can allow criminals to pose as callers from those three categories, the organization said.

Officials warn that election laws prevent telephone voting and those conducting political polls are not able to offer rewards.

The 2016 presidential season is heating up — and with it, the Connecticut Better Business Bureau is warning that criminals are using voter registration as a premise to obtain personal and financial information through a variety of telephone calls specifically targeting potential voters.
