LOVE IS IN THE ‘FAIR’
By Mark Dionne Town Times
On Thursday, Sept. 15, the Middlefield Board of Finance voted unanimously to recommend a Town Meeting to approve salary increases for certain town employees, bringing their salaries more in line with similar positions in other towns. The recommendations came from First Selectman Ed Bailey as the result of a salary and job description study initiated by former First Selectman Jon Brayshaw and conducted by an outside consultant. The study looked at the pay of the same jobs in similar towns. As Bailey explained to the BOF, “No town is a direct comparison. It’s impossible to directly compare two towns” so Middlefield was compared to a group of “small town type towns.” Information gathered from comparable towns was broken down into average and median hourly rates for the positions. The recommendations focused on 11 non-union positions because the union positions could not be adjusted in the middle of a contract. The positions suggested for increases are First Selectman, Board of Selectmen, Treasurer, Tax Collector, See Increases, A2

New chess group starts up in Middlefield By Mark Dionne Town Times
In an age of Pokemon Go and Candy Crush, the Levi E. Coe Library hopes to build a club for one of the oldest and, many would argue, greatest of games, chess. Roy Neumann is the instructor of Chess with Roy, where new and experienced players can gather every Thursday to learn the game or play against others. A Middlefield native, Neumann started playing chess at Memorial school, under the guidance of a teacher, “and I’ve been playing ever since.” See Chess, A3

The three largest suggested increases by dollar figure are the First Selectman’s increase of $8,274, the Tax Collector’s increase of $6,506, and the Town Clerk’s increase of $6,493. Bailey noted that he was “not entirely comfortable” including the First Selectman’s salary, his own, in the recommendations but that he had been asked to do so by the BOF.
The town should do it at once, Bailey said, “if we want to get it behind us.” BOF Chair Bob Yamartino agreed that if a position deserved a certain salary it should happen sooner. “We want to compensate this year ... It has been a planned project,” Yamartino said. The Board of Selectmen has the responsibility to call a Town Meeting for the public to vote on moving the funds
for this adjustment. If approved, the increases will be paid for by $15,000 from the Capital Non-Reoccurring Budget and about $10,000 from the Operating Contingency Fund. The $15,000 was put in the Capital Non-Reoccurring Budget by public vote in anticipation of the study results. Moving these funds requires a Town Meeting, which has not yet been scheduled.
The end result would put the First Selectman’s FY 16-17 salary ($75,427) between the study average ($73,948) and the study median ($77,042) for comparable First Selectmen. Throughout the meeting, Bailey and BOF members mostly referred to the positions and not the people currently in those positions as the study was not focused on job performance, but compensation of the position. BOF members discussed implementing the increases all at once or in a two-step process but decided an all at once approach was simpler and justified.

Neumann describes the appeal of chess as both simple and powerful. “It’s not like cards, it’s not what you’re dealt. There’s no coincidence,” he said. “The first time I beat my chess teacher I was on top of the world.” Chess combines competition with a mental challenge. Neumann said, “Players go into a chess game knowing that you’re ready to think hard. Even if I lose a game, as long as it’s a good and challenging game, it’s just so rewarding.” Chess with Roy is designed to be a friendly chess club for players regardless of their ability. “I am not the best chess player around but I’ve got a pretty good game. I will teach anyone to play even
from the very beginning, teaching the rules.” Players at Chess with Roy connect with a deceptively simple game with a history over 1,500 years old. Chess emerged in Persia, somewhere in the fifth or sixth century, as chatrang, which itself came from and Indian game possibly adapted from an earlier Chinese game. In his book “The Immortal Game,” David Shenk writes of chess, “It seemed to have been present in every place and time, and to have been utilized in every sort of activity. Kings cajoled and threatened with it; philosophers told stories with it; poets analogized with it; moralists preached with it ... It sparked and settled feuds, facilitated
and sabotaged romances, and fertilized literature from Dante to Nabokov ... Chess has also, in modern times, been used to study memory, language, math, and logic, and has recently emerged as a powerful learning tool in elementary and secondary schools.”
ilarly skilled players. Chess with Roy also cultivates a friendly atmosphere with baked goods, coffee, and tea. “There’s no pressure, you don’t have to be the best player.”
Levi Coe Library Director Jess Lobner is hoping this ancient game can take root in Middlefield.
Neumann, who is also a carpenter and guitar teacher, said that learning chess can be like learning music and everything can seem impossible in the beginning, but time and practice are key.
Neumann uses a patient approach, trying to play with each person and then matching them up with sim-
“There’s nothing to chance with chess and that can intimidate people,” Neumann said “The last thing some-
one wants to feel is intimidated when they’re learning something.” If the new club develops a regular rooster of players, it could host a tournament. Neumann said he would also like to watch players learn and grow. Teaching someone chess until they were skilled enough to beat him, Neumann said, would be an “ultimate goal.” Chess with Roy starts at 5 p.m. in the Levi E. Coe’s activity room with drop-ins welcome any time for children and adults.

Class size a concern for some parents Regional School District 13’s Board of Education has entered the 2016-2017 school year with a new chair, one less school, and concerns about kindergarten class sizes. In July, the BOE elected Bob Moore as its new chair. Moore, elected to the BOE from Durham less than a year ago, is one of the newer BOE members. Moore’s first BOE meeting was on Oct. 14, 2015, when the vote was held to close Korn Elementary School. Moore abstained from that vote because he had not been part of the process. When elected, Moore spoke of his experience as a manager at CT DEEP and of putting children and grandchildren through RSD13 schools. Moore replaces former chair Kerrie Flanagan, who has served for 10 years on the board, including the last four years as chair. Flanagan will become the BOE’s treasurer. At the BOE’s first September meeting, Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi updated the BOE on the work of the district over the summer. on the horizon. It’s confusing for the lot of us. We ask each other, “How did we get here?” Because on that night, in that room, we are all teenagers sitting in Mr. Collins’ English class, passing notes, cracking jokes, watching the clock and praying for release from our academic confines. And if you were to ask them, they would say that life is good. For some, though, the years have had a heavier hand; 14 have fallen by the wayside. A few have gone head-to-head with serious illnesses. Throughout the night I am in two different worlds. I am in the present moment with my classmates, wanting to hear all about their lives, and so excited to see them, and I have stepped through a portal, back to the days of our youth when everything that lay before us was an unknown and ripe with posSee Carr, A18
