Candidates debate in Meriden forum By Leigh Tauss Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — Twelve candidates for state House and Senate seats debated taxes, job creation, minimum wage, government spending and public safety at a forum at Washington Middle School Monday night. Candidates from the House 83rd, 85th, 90th and 103rd districts joined candidates from the 13th and 16th Senate districts on the stage to field questions. The forum was moderated by Richard Hanley, director of the graduate program in journalism at Quinnipiac University. Incumbent Democratic state Sen. Dante Bartolomeo, who represents the 13th Senate District, faced off against Republican challenger Len Suzio, fielding questions regarding government spending and the early release from prison. When it came to a regional approach to education, Bartolomeo said it could yield savings, but expressed hesitation. “Regionalization is something that is certainly an avenue for savings and I think it’s an avenue we have to be very careful about,” Bartolomeo said. “We don’t want to dismantle a system that is working well in some communities because we are attempting to squash everyone together.” See Forum, A15

Sun and crowds for 97th Durham Fair By Mark Dionne Town Times

The 97th Durham Fair has come and gone, leaving happy fair-goers and fair volunteers. While figures were not available as of press time, large crowds on the fairgrounds and a packed Saturday night show by headliners Foreigner suggest a very large attendance for the 2016 fair.

“Whenever the fair has a good year, we have a good year,” said Levi E. Coe Library board member Ralph Sayward inside the library’s coffee booth. With temperatures only reaching the 70s, Saturday and Sunday at the fair had what Sayward called “perfect coffee weather.”

Quilting is a family affair for the Berry’s By Mark Dionne Town Times

As a dedicated quilter, when Vicki Berry took her spot inside the Durham Fair’s Needlework Barn to give quilting demonstrations at the 97th Durham Fair, she was able to drape her corner of the barn with her own creations. One of those creations was a quilt that stitched together generations. Vicki and her husband Peter created a quilt displayed at the Durham Fair using men’s shirts from four generations of the Berry family. The quilt, with a striking diamond and star pattern, took a year and a half to make with Vicki and Peter dividing the work. Peter was responsible for sewing thin strips taken from the old shirts into squares and Vicki sewed the squares together to form the quilt.

Bartolomeo runs on message of optimism MERIDEN — Residents and businesses alike are warning that Connecticut is heading down the wrong path, but that’s not how Sen. Dante Bartolomeo sees things. The Meriden Democrat said the legislature, controlled by her party, has enacted policies that will spark economic development, and she believes her constituents have

She said this is particularly true of parents and guardians of school-aged children. “When you talk to people who are invested in the system...they really are feeling good, especially in Meriden, about what we’ve been doing,” she said during a recent visit to the Record-Journal. Her depiction of Connecticut differs dramatically from the view being put forward by

She said the legislature responded with a program in

MERIDEN — Len Suzio said one of his favorite parts of being a state senator was having access to information he could share with constituents in the 13th District. Suzio said those same constituents would be the “best educated in the state” if he’s able to regain the seat he lost

to Democratic Sen. Dante Bartolomeo in 2012. “I really liked making people aware of what was going on, and then giving them a voice,” Suzio, the Republican nominee, said during an interview with the Record-Journal editorial board. Suzio won the seat during a 2011 special election, but lost in 2012 and 2014 to Bartolomeo, who made her own visit to the Record-Journal recently.

Suzio said things are different in 2016 because the Democratic-controlled legislature has continued to bring the state down the wrong path, and accused Bartolomeo of misleading voters about the policies she supports. He said he is seeking a database of email addresses that Bartolomeo maintains for legislative purposes because she has “controlled her image” through newsletters and other correspondence

So I tend to bustle through my morning routine, in the hope that quick movements will get the blood circulating again. It’s a similar scenario at day’s end. There’s a chill in the air, but if I touch that thermostat I know I am putting out the welcome mat for Old Man Winter. So, instead, I just wrap myself up in a bajillion blankets. I may be shaking and shivering, but I know I have saved summer. You’re welcome.

I don’t put on shoes until my feet are looking a bit purplish and frostbite seems like a distinct possibility. Remaining barefoot, which to me is the best part of summer, means that that cherished season has not yet taken leave of us. And obviously we cannot even give a passing thought to donning the winter jacket. That would be a definite tip-off to summer that it’s on the way out.

I may be suffering from delusions of grandeur, but I tend to think that I can stave off the changing of seasons – specifically, summer to winter – with complete denial. Dave Lockrow cites a surprising source for the booth’s success. “We’ve got the reputation for the best fries,” he said. “We get people to stop down just based on the Internet.” All of the civic and nonprofit booths are staffed by volunteers and the Durham Fair Association has started marking those booths with “non-profit vendor” signs. Obituaries Henry Arnold Blakeslee DURHAM — Henry Arnold Blakeslee, 77, of Durham, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Heaton and Wilma (Eick) Blakeslee. Henry lived in Durham all of his life where he had been a member of the Durham Volunteer Fire Department and was employed at Chapman Manufacturing for many years. Henry enjoyed reading, western movies, military history and working on anything mechanical. By far his is greatest pleasure was being outdoors working on his numerous projects in Marlborough. A fiercely independent spirit with a heart of gold, Henry embodied the true spirit of old New England Yankee ingenuity. Henry is survived by his

aunt, Myrtle Leighton, of Durham; a nephew, Andrew P. Heymann, IV and his wife, Kathleen; two great-nephews, Andrew P. Heymann, V, and Kyle L. Heymann, all of Glastonbury; several cousins; and his many close friends. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Helen M. Blakeslee. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church St., Middletown. Burial was followed in Mica Hill Cemetery in Durham. DURHAM — John Henry West, 91, passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at CT Hospice of Branford. Born in Durham (1925) to the late John and Olga (Grochola) Waskiewicz, he lived most of his life there with his beloved wife of 68 years, Barbara (Blake) West. Together over 15 years and under his skilled guidance, they proceeded to completely build every part of their dream home on Madison Road. John served his country during World War II as a First Lieutenant and U.S. Army Air Force Navigator, and flew as part of a special airborne squadron, the Jolly Rogers. Sixty happy years of family vacation time was spent on the shores of Block Island- fishing, clamming,

and inventing “systems” to bypass nasty thorns and access the “biggest” blackberries. Upon his retirement as a sheet metal worker from G.R.Cummings, John and Barbara relocated to Jamestown, R.I., where their island home overlooked Narragansett Bay. Here he was able to satisfy his passion for surf-casting and continue his unsuccessful pursuit of the 31 pound striped bass record held by his wife. John possessed a deep-thinking and inquisitive mind and was not happy unless surrounded by electronic equipment in various stages of disassembly and a well-stocked yard full of “raw materials.” His interests knew no bounds - classical music, physics, mastery of the Polish language, history of the Civil War, Russian Literature (especially Tolstoy), and crossword puzzles, to name but a few. He and Barbara nurtured and passed along those joys of life-long learning to their three children. John was preceded in death by his wife ,Barbara; and two sisters, Olga Mesick and Elizabeth Messick. He is survived by one sis-

ter, Veronica Bogel, of East Haddam; his three children, Lorraine Martin and husband, William, of Durham, Elaine Woodard and husband, Craig, of Missouri and Colorado, and John West and wife, Christine, of Durham; three grandsons, Daniel Woodard, of Missouri, Nathan Woodard and wife, Laura, of Rhode Island, and Geoffrey Martin and wife, Kate, of Middletown; and great-grandchildren Maya, Emma, and Ethan Martin; as well as many nephews and nieces. A family graveside service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. in Mica Hill Cemetery in Durham where full military honors will be accorded. At 3:30 p.m., friends and family are invited to honor John’s life at a reception at the United Churches Fellowship Hall, 228 Main St., Durham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to the North Light Association Fund, P.O. Box 220, Block Island, RI. 02807. >> Quilting

Clarification

From A1

The engagement photo of Shelby Aiello and Kenneth Murphy which appeared on the front page of the Sept. 23 edition should have been credited to Katie Bogaert.

The division of labor worked well for the family. “This would drive me crazy,” said Vicki, referring to the squares, “but he says I had the harder job.”

The photographer can be reached at Katie@kbequinellc.com.

Some of the strips of fabric in the quilt measure less than an inch across. According to Vicki, saving and using even the smallest piece of fabric is a quilting tradition, called “sewing strings,” dating back to times when even the smallest fabric scrap was too valuable to throw away. Not throwing away items led

to the creation of the quilt when the family discovered that old suitcases believed to be empty actually contained shirts from Peter’s father and grandfather. Peter’s own shirts and shirts from Vicki and Peter’s son Cooper added the third and fourth generation to the quilt. Peter left many of the labels visible because “it looks cool,” said Vicki, who pointed out an original G. Fox label among the L.L. Bean and Northeast Outfitters labels. Even using the sedate col-

ors of menswear and a dark fabric background, the quilt has a lot of vibrant color and patterns, including a reoccurring purple. “Peter’s father really liked purple,” explained Vicki. “Eddie Bauer came up with the color Elderberry and he wore it because he was the elder Berry.” Vicki regards sewing as an important meditative routine. When their home lost power for days during an October snowstorm, Peter hooked up their sewing machine to a car battery so Vicki could continue sewing.

“You feel so good when you make something like this,” Vicki said. An appreciation of quilting also led Vicki to help run the Durham Parks and Recreation’s “Get Stitchy” program on Tuesday evenings. “I can share my enthusiasm for quilting. That’s something I can do easily,” Vicki said. Vicki is also the Children’s Librarian at the Levi E. Coe Library in Middlefield. Another recent creation, a bearthemed “Story Time” cross stitch, will be displayed at the library.

Marvelous Mutts debut, please spectators By Mark Dionne Town Times

Trainers and dogs from Marvelous Mutts performed at the 97th Durham Fair bringing a demonstration of canine athleticism and a message about dog adoption. Nadja Palenzuela, who runs

the Hudson River Valley-based Marvelous Mutts with Kara Gilmore, led the Durham Fair performances and said she loved her first experience at the fair. “The crowd is really into it and it’s a lot of fun,” said Palenzuela. “They really like our brand of entertainment, which is ac-

tion-packed and fast-paced.” The show, which played several times a day during the fair, features dogs running an agility course, doing Frisbee tricks, and “dock diving,” where a dog leaps for height and distance into water after a ball or toy.

agility competitions before starting Marvelous Mutts. “We have a lot of high energy dogs that were very proficient in different dog sports ... they did very well in Frisbee and agility and dock diving so we started this team as a way to showcase what rescue dogs can do.”

Palenzuela took part in dog

Mutts are rescue dogs and Palenzuela tries to shine a spotlight on adoption during the shows. When audiences see how energetic, friendly, and trainable rescue dogs can be, they might consider adoption for their next pet. See Mutts, A18

Endorsed by the Working Families Party of Connecticut, Bartolomeo also backs progressive economic policies like a paid family medical leave act, raising the minimum wage to $15, and charging fees to large employers who pay workers less until the minimum wage reaches that level. Republicans have also tried to use Malloy’s low approval rating — only 24 percent of respondents to the June Quinnipiac poll approved of the governor — to demonstrate voters’ frustration with the direction of the state under Democratic control. Bartolomeo was careful when asked about her stance with Malloy, noting the poll shows people are unhappy but also said that view could be because people expected more unity between the Executive and Legislative branches controlled by the same party. Bartolomeo said she herself has disagreed with Malloy on some key issues but also called him “very good to Meriden,” particularly in approving state bonding for commercial redevelopment.

Instead, Democrats have adopted two of the largest tax increases in state history over the last five years, even with warnings from businesses, Suzio said.

A Connecticut Business and Industry Association survey, released this month, found that 68 percent of responding businesses earned profits last year, but less than half expressed a willingness to make job-creating investments in the state. “This is not just another election or another year with normal problems — we are in a situation that threatens the state in a very serious way, said Suzio.

Suzio said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy wouldn’t need to offer financial incentives to businesses to come or leave if the state had a more attractive business climate.

He also said the state could ease some of its immediate short-term fiscal woes through temporary debt restructuring, a process where creditors make concessions to debtors who are facing financial difficulty.
