Durham discusses positions, money, Korn By Mark Dionne Town Times
Durham held three meetings for town business on Monday, Oct. 3, addressing town positions, town money, and the potential use of the Korn Elementary School building.
In between a regular Board of Selectmen meeting and the Annual Town Meeting, the selectmen met in executive session to discuss the Korn building, which has been suggested as a community center for Durham.
Executive sessions, which are closed to the public and the media, are usually used for employment matters and negotiating strategies. According to Durham First Selectmen Laura Francis, the BOS can hold an executive session to consider the
acquisition of a property if the discussions are regarding cost. The executive session suggests that Durham officials are far enough along in their considerations for cost figures.
Francis and the Board of Education have been exchanging written communications regarding the town’s purchase or lease of the property. During the regular BOS See Meetings, A3

Silas Hart said his three daughters plan to donate 100 percent of their lemonade stand proceeds to American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. The lemonade stand, Lemons-4-Ladies, will be set up at 609 Main St., Middlefield, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Satur-

A day for holistic wellness on tap By Mark Dionne Town Times
On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Durham Public Library will hold a Holistic Wellness Day, featuring a series of workshops focusing on wellness practices for mind and body. The idea, funded through a Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation grant, came from former Library Director Trish Connolly. The day was intended to coincide with the Summer Reading theme of “Exercise Your Mind” but staff turnover delayed the day. “The idea was, rather than concentrate on straight up exercise, which we don’t really do much, concentrate on some lesser know alternative practices that people might be interested in learning about,” said library assistant diSee Wellness, A7

Bellamia, 12, and Kiomara, 9, started Lemons-4-Ladies at the end of September and raised just over $500 during their first weekend. The amount of money they were able to raise “inspired us so much,” Hart said, adding that its great to see his daughters “doing such great things for others.”
“We have a giant pink lemonade stand, pink shirts and, of course, sell cups of pink lemonade,” he said. “In just our first two days, we met a survivor and her family and so many great people who donated generously.” Hart and his family will be walking Oct. 16 in the Making Strides of Greater New Haven event at Lighthouse
Point Park in New Haven, when they will donate the money they have raised through Lemons-4-Ladies. Their team name is Laura’s Lifesavers, after Hart’s aunt. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, an annual campaign to raise awareness of the disease. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is “a celebration of survi-
vorship — an occasion to express hope and our shared determination to make this breast cancer’s last century,” says the New Haven event’s website. “We believe that everyone with breast cancer should have support.” aragali@record-journal.com 203-317-2224 Twitter: @Andyragz

>> Meetings meeting, the selectmen discussed the difficulty of finding and retaining an Animal Control Officer. While a candidate, who is a full time ACO in a different town, has stepped forward to take on the part time position, the selectmen decided to post the job. Selectmen John Szewczyk noted that the BOS has been critical of other town entities, such as the library, making hires without job postings. In the interests of transparency and best practices, the board decided to post the position. The posting will be changed to require current certification. The BOS also appointed Robert Doyle as the town’s new Burning Official and Colleen Darnell as a new in-district member of the Historic District Commission.
The figure carried over was reduced by $71,094. That money had been selected for carry over for a Pickett Lane project but that project was completed in fiscal year 2015-2016.
The town has not filled the position of Finance Director, but Francis noted that “about a dozen” resumes have been received so far to replace the departing Mary Jane Malavasi.
At the Town Meeting, Peter Cascini was re-elected to the board of the Durham Volunteer Fire Company. Robert Booz and Lyn Johnson were re-elected to the Durham Public Library Board of Trustees and Eric Infeld was elected as a new member to that same board.

Obituaries Dawn E. (Droskoski) Bertz MIDDLETOWN — Dawn Elizabeth (Droskoski) Bertz, 50, of Middletown, passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, with her family by her side after a long and extremely courageous battle with cancer. Dawn was incredibly strong and brave during the past year and a half, fighting hard to the very end. An outstanding artist and award winning designer, she worked with her family at the Bertz Design Group in Middletown for 18 years. Her artwork is the central theme on four of the Durham Fair collector posters. Dawn was born on Valentine’s Day in 1966, and graduated from Coginchaug Regional High School in Durham in 1984; attended classes at Yale University in New Haven; Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.; and graduated from the University of Hartford Art School with a bachelor of fine arts in 1989. Her illustrations adorned hand-
made cards and envelopes she sent to friends and family, ignoring postal regulations by painting symbolic themes and messages across the envelopes. An example and central part of her personality, “following her own road,” not the path of others. She is survived by her parents, Theodore and Judith (Parlett) Bertz, of Fort Myers, Fla.; her sister, Christen L. Bertz, of Durham, sister, Catherine E. (Katie) Kesten and her husband, Timothy Kesten, of Middletown; niece, Brenna Goldberg, of Durham; and many aunts, uncles; and cousins from Ohio, Texas, California, Oregon and Hawaii. Dawn’s valiant fight was also supported by special family friends, Kara Parker and Kara’s mother, Shirley Pagano, both of Meriden; and her former husband and friend, John Droskoski, of Norwich. The family expresses their sincere thanks and gratitude to the entire staff of the Middlesex Hospital Hospice and Palliative Care Unit for their devoted and loving care of Dawn.
Noreen Murphy Also they wish to thank all of the visiting nurses, companions, caretakers, wound care doctors, nurses, and support staff for their care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dawn’s memory to the Middlesex Hospital Hospice and Palliative Care Unit, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457. Family and friends are welcome to join in a “Celebration of Life” for Dawn on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Inn at Middletown, 70 Main St., Middletown, between the hours of 2 and 5 p.m. To share memories or send condolences to the family, please visit www.doolittlefuneralservice.com.

Prior to her retirement, Noreen worked as a registered nurse for the Veterans Hospital in West Haven as well as Waters Edge Heath Care in Middletown. Besides her husband, Daniel, Noreen is survived by her children, Richard, of East Hampton, Tara Klupa and her husband, Patrick, of Mendon, Mass., Sean Murphy and his wife, Kimberly, of Vancleave, Miss.;
four sisters, Katherine Barrett, of Monroe, Claire Shea, of Supply, N.C., Eleanor Aufman, of Bolton, Regina Flynn, of Chicago, Ill.; four grandchildren; and her special friend, Melissa Ackerman. This old photograph was recovered at Middlefield’s Levi E. Coe Library. Apparently, it was accidentally returned with library books. The library staff has taken to social media in an attempt to find its owner.

“I think we got a good mix,” said Michaud.
Book circulation suggests a community interest in alternative medicines and wellness subjects, according to Michaud. The library also recently held a T’ai Chi for Seniors event, drawing a good crowd. “Registration has been very strong” for the sessions said Michaud. “This has been a bit of an experiment, and I’m encouraged.” Holistic Wellness Day consists of six different hour-long workshops. All are free, but registration is required. The day includes a variety of activities oriented around the idea of health wellness. Some of the activities involve movement, like yoga or T’ai Chi, while the stillness of meditation will be the focus of the 3 p.m. session, “Living in the Light: Meditation &
Yoga has become a common practice in America with some doing it entirely for exercise and others mixing in spiritualism. The T’ai Chi session, at 12 p.m., explores “Qigong” or what a press release calls “gentle and fluid energy exercises” with both standing and seated meditation. Although it might not seem gentle or fluid, acupuncture, the subject of the 10:30 a.m. session, has many practitioners and adherents who swear by it. Amy Calandruccio, a licensed acupuncturist who works at Middlesex Hospital, will show the uses and methods of acupuncture. Participants can even try an acupuncture needle.

The library offers many one shot programs as well as
programs in a series, but this is the first whole day series. While people sign up for the workshops individually, Michaud said she is surprised at how many are taking advantage of multiple sessions. Michaud said that the event has appealed to people getting older and considering their health and interested in “activities that are less strenuous like yoga and T’ai Chi.” The meditation session also has proved to be popular in registration. Registration can be done online, by phone, or in person.

ROUGH START FOR COGINCHAUG
Coginchaug Regional High School’s Hayley McIntyre attempts to elude a pair of North Branford players during a varsity girls soccer game on Oct. 4 at CRHS. The Blue Devils came up short that day, 4-0, and at press time owned a record of 1-6. | Mark Dionne, Town Times
Lyman Hall, Coginchaug officially merge lanes Facing low numbers, Trojans form boys swim co-op with Durham school By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
WALLINGFORD — The Lyman Hall boys swimming and diving team is getting a boost this winter. The CIAC has approved Lyman Hall and Coginchaug as
a co-op team for the 2016-17 season. “It’s going to be great,” said LH coach Donna Neary. “I think we only had seven swimmers returning. I’m not sure how many from Coginchaug will be joining, but it’s official. We are going to be a co-op and it’s going to be very cool.” The Trojans are already familiar with Coginchaug. Three swimmers from the Durham school swam with LH as independents last
winter. “They called last year asking if we would mind having a few of their swimmers on the team,” Neary said. “I knew we had a small group, so I said, ‘No problem.’ We have a later practice, so they have more time to get here after school. They had to get their own rides to the meets, but came to every meet and swam in extra heats. They even had one swimmer qualify for states. It really worked See Co-op, A9

of kids that you could ask for,” Neary said. “They took these kids in and they acted like they knew them all of their lives. They got along so well. Now they can actually score points for us. This will be fun and I’m looking forward to winter. It’s going to be different.”

Steve Bartunek or Jim Martinelli “Serving your insurance needs since 1877
My moustache and my propeller fell way short of the mark, as they kept poking out in all directions except the right one. And not only did I keep forgetting the next step, but I was all thumbs and my gemstone refused to stay in its wire housing. The instructor had the patience of a saint, though. If she was gnashing her teeth, she certainly didn’t show it. She finally wrapped one gemstone for me. I imagine she took pity on me and figured I should go home with something. I told her that if she had the urge to do the second one, I would not say no. She did wrap the second one for me. Which means that, basically, I did absolutely nothing. I do not believe this is going to be a lucrative business for me.

The legislature also approved raising penalties on those already convicted of animal cruelty. Under the new law, animal cruelty remains a Class D felony for first time offenders, but rises to a Class C felony for those with a previous conviction. Legislation approved this past spring changes laws governing human trafficking, including expanding laws on enticing a minor to include anyone who is 16 or 17 or “someone reasonably believed to be under the age of 18.” Previously, ignorance of age was a permissible defense for enticing a minor. The law also requires hotels to keep records about rentals, which authorities say will help their investigations. Municipalities can now start regulating so-called mini-motorcycles the same way they can dirtbikes and all-terrain vehicles. Municipalities already had the authority to ban the use of dirtbikes and all-terrain vehicles on roads or other publicly owned property. Another new law increases

Candidates focus on business during forum
Questions during a forum, Tuesday morning, Sept. 27, which featured 16 candidates, largely focused on strategies for job-growth and balancing the budget.
Republicans also used the forum, organized by the Quinnipiac and Cheshire chambers of commerce, to accuse Democrats of passing regulations that have made Connecticut unfriendly to business.
“I prefer to lead in a positive direction and with a positive message,” Sen. Dante Bartolomeo, D-Meriden, said.
Democrats agreed that the state needs to find efficiencies in its budget, but also repeatedly said continuing to grow the economy will produce revenue needed to address looming deficits, which are projected to exceed $1
Democrats said in particular that the state needs to improve the availability

lawmakers from both sides of the aisle recognize it can “only grow.” He pointed to the $220 million deal that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy negotiated to increase Sikorsky’s payroll to 8,000 employees — an agreement which was expected to earn legislative support last week — as a victory for the Democrats.
Republican candidates repeatedly said businesses will only grow when the state has a more stable budget outlook, which can only be achieved by cutting spending.
