Talk of the Towns returns By Mark Dionne Town Times

The Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation gathered a didjeridu player, a “Hamilton” costumer, a children’s librarian, and an ESPN producer to the Indian Springs Country Club Saturday, Nov. 5 for the third Talk of the Towns, which present local people to give brief talks about their area of expertise. Matthew Huddleston brought an unusual instrument to the talk. The didjeridu, a long wind instrument made from the trunk of a tree, produces a low, droning sound that is instantly recognizable as Australian. The first time he heard a didjeridu played, Huddleston said he thought to himself, “Why don’t they have to stop to breathe?” See Talk, A2

Stories of faith shared in new book “Looking In, Looking Out, Looking Up,” is a compilation of 150 writings from 2003-2016 by the deacons of the Middlefield Federated Church. As the title suggests, the writings each contain a search of heart and soul, while looking out at our community and world, searching and sharing how God may be at work. The deacons are not “formally trained or educated in theology” and are not professional writers, and the result is just heartfelt sharing by every-day people simply sharing personal faith stories. The book is in paperback form and will be available at the Holiday Fair at the Middlefield Federated Church Saturday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by calling the church office, 860-349-9881. Proceeds support the church.

Residents and students will come together this week to observe Veterans Day during ceremonies and other special events. In Meriden, a ceremony will be held Friday, Nov. 11, at Veterans Memorial Boulevard in the Stop & Shop plaza on Broad Street. The public is invited to the event, which starts at 10:30 a.m. In Wallingford, there will be an observance ceremony on Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. in the auditorium of Dag Hammarskjold Middle School on Pond Hill Road. Several people will speak and the school band will perform. The event

In Southington, the American Legion on Main Street will have a small service starting at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 11. In Cheshire, the high school will be having its annual veterans breakfast followed by an assembly on Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m. “It’s critical that we create opportunities for students to engage with veterans and be part of honoring them on Veterans Day,” said Tim Galvin, social studies chair. The breakfast usually gets more than 100 veterans that attend with their families. At 11 a.m. there will be a formal assembly to observe Veterans Day, which will be live

streamed around the building. The event is open to local veterans. In North Haven, a memorial event was held on the town green on Sunday, Nov. 6. State Sen. Len Fasano, State Rep. David Yaccarino and First Selectman Michael Freda were scheduled to attend, the Yale University Baroque Ensemble performed patriotic songs, and wreaths were placed on monuments throughout the morning. There was a gathering at the American Legion Hall across from the green following the ceremony. “Veterans are very important to us in this town, and in the state,” Freda said. “It’s our way of honoring the veterans See Veterans, A4

In his college years, Huddleston received a grant to study the music of cultures in conflict. He learned to play and make a didjeridu and also experienced what he called “a full immersion” experience with aboriginals in Northern Australia, fitting into the kinship system and witnessing ceremonies and meeting families.

“There’s alcohol and there’s violence but there’s also friendship and community.” Huddleston ended by playing the instrument, demonstrating breath control and creating a sound not frequently heard in public in Middlefield. “We’re going to have a didjeridu band,” said CVEF’s Connie Brown, “and it’s probably going to involve a CVEF grant.”

Hamelin, who has worked on other shows like “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Wicked,” and the “Addams Family,” and at the Hartford Ballet Company and the Long Wharf Theater, does not claim to have seen the success of “Hamilton” coming. When she got involved, she said, it was “a little show at The Public Theater.” Hamelin brought corsets for her talk and also had slides to show some of the work being done and some of the finished costumes on stage and magazine covers. Hamelin and Huddleston were not the first Talk of the Towns speakers to bring props. Retired teacher Lorrie Martin brought jellyfish, bearskin, and a stuffed owl to her talk last year, when she spoke about outdoor education. Other past speakers have covered topics such as parallel universes, hieroglyphics, and living in China with slides and props. Booz told the audience that the Talk of the Towns was designed “to bring together people in the community to have some fun.” The event moved to a Saturday this year from Friday and, like past years, drew a full house. The last two speakers discussed their jobs and the misconceptions people might have about them.

Hamelin described the process of fitting the costume to the actors as well, making sure the designer liked the look and the actors were comfortable. “We have to keep the actors happy. They’re on stage eight shows a week and they work hard.”

She described how her elementary school students use computers to talk about books with students across Connecticut and the country. They also connect di-

The corsets in “Hamilton” must allow the actors, who Hamelin refers to as “the kids,” freedom to dance and act. Hamelin’s corsets have “bones” like traditional corsets but also incorporate hidden zippers, spandex, and magnets to facilitate dance movements and quick changes.

Jenny Lussier has been an elementary school librarian for eight years and described the changes of the library environment. “Most of the time there’s not a lot of shushing ... because learning has been changing,” Lussier said.

“My job is to cover the minutia and put it into context and show that sports resonates throughout our society,” Buckheit said.

“It goes way outside of our walls,” Lussier said. “We have the whole world in our library.” Lussier described the experience of a student connecting with an author showing in the middle of her work. “It means something when an author shows up a giant stack of papers that she had to go through.”

Although not an on-air personality, Buckheit showed behind-the-scenes clips of himself appearing in frame to fix and adjust the features or coach the hosts.

The reporting, Buckheit said, was not just for sports fans. Buckheit showed diverse clips from ESPN features on subjects like a trend of sprinting through 18 holes of golf, President Obama’s NCAA bracket picks, a Vietnam veteran who regained his voice and found a reentry to society through Seattle Seahawks football games, and the first white football coach hired at a historically black college.

As a librarian, Lussier also takes her students through projects involving robots and coding and cardboard, which Sports helps provide context add to the commotion in her for other significant subjects, libraries at John Lyman EleBuckheit told the audience. mentary School and Brewster Elementary School.

CVEF is also known for its fund-raising art auctions and the Spelling Bee that transformed into a Trivia Bee. At the Talk of the Towns, Brown revealed that the Trivia Bee, held in the spring, would this year become a Lip Sync Battle. COMMENTARY

What to do with an extra hour? By Diana Carr Special to Town Times

As I write this, we are just a couple of days away from changing the clocks. I’m looking forward to it. I get up with the chickens, and it just seems wrong somehow to crawl out of bed when it is as black as tar outside my window. It feels like my dream time and I should not be parting ways so soon. I feel better about being up when the night finally retreats, but these days that seems to take forever. I keep glancing out the window. Is it daylight yet? It seems like it never is. And I’m inclined to feel sorry for myself for having to get up so early. Oh, it will still be dark when I get up after we change the clocks, but I won’t have to bumble around in my misery, waiting for the day to start, for quite so long. And I cherish that extra hour that we have been gifted with. It feels like there’s magic afoot, doling out extra time for sleep or what-have-you. I do love having extra hours. So I got to thinking. Wouldn’t it be a lovely thing if we could just scooch some hours over to the things we wish could linger on just a bit longer? My boys are long grown and gone, but if I had the power, I would want to stretch out those growing-up years. Back then it seemed like time was going at an expected pace. A month seemed like a month, a year seemed like a year. But now that it is all a memory, it seems like it was only a week. I would like to have packed on some time to coming home from the hospital with my newborn, knowing that this was the best thing I had ever done, and was likely to ever do. I would like to have added on a lot of hours – years, actually – onto my “Mom” years. I know, I’m still a Mom. But it’s not the same. I have wanted to add hours to summer days and Christmas and my birthday, but I don’t fret about those things, for they will surely come a callin’ again. I wouldn’t have minded having a bit more time with my youth, though. It doesn’t look like that’s coming back. But really, it’s the things we hold close to our heart, and that we know are gone forever, that makes us want to turn back the clock. Sometimes an extra hour with someone we have lost, would mean everything. Then there’s the flip side of all this. I can think of countless occasions when I wished Father Time had taken back some of his minutes. He gave me way too many with the dentist and jobs I didn’t like and interviews that had me squirming in my seat. So what did you do with your precious extra hour? I’m planning on putting mine to good use. I will be sleeping. Coginchaug Regional High School students at Rodrigo Mesinas Perez’ home in the hills outside Oaxaca.

The Oaxaca connection By Marilyn Horn

Over the past 15 years, several students and faculty members from Coginchaug Regional High School have traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, to share in the fascinating culture, appreciate the beautiful scenery, and learn about the several indigenous groups still living in the mountains in the state of Oaxaca. Those visits were inspired by a sponsorship begun in 2001 Coginchaug students paint animal murals in the center in for a young child in the Oax- Oaxaca. aca Streetchildren Grassroots program (Centro de Esperzanza Infantil in Mexico), a non-profit that currently is helping to provide an education for 600 needy children and young adults from Oaxaca.
