Coginchaug football eyes first night home game By Mark Dionne Town Times

Regional School District 13 officials and athletic booster clubs are planning a night football game for Coginchaug Regional High School. Although it is still being organized, a game rescheduled to Friday, Nov. 10 against Morgan High School is the target. To the dismay of many, the current athletic complex at CRHS does not have permanent lights and has not hosted a night game. If all goes according to plan, the Coginchaug Regional High School athletic complex will host its first night game on Friday, Nov. 10. | Mark Dionne, Town Times

meeting called the Coginchaug-Morgan idea “good news and an opportunity for potential partnership with members of the community.” The Coginchaug-Morgan game would be played under temporary lights, similar to those used at the Durham Fair. Eight lights, four per side, would illuminate the field. The idea came from the Benchwarmers athletic booster group and the Coginchaug Football Club, which are paying the approximately $1,500 cost for the lights. See Football, A15

New STEAM coordinator in Durham, Middlefield By Mark Dionne Town Times

Continuing the efforts to bring STEAM into classrooms, Regional School District 13 has hired Brenda Parness in the new position of K-12 STEAM Coordinator. Parness comes from the Meriden school system, where she was a high school science teacher, technology integration specialist, and science department chair and is eager to grow STEAM in RSD 13. STEAM, an acronym for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, is a trend in education designed to teach profession-oriented subjects and to make the way those subjects are taught more appealing.

As planned, students engaged in STEAM learning in RSD 13 will use more hands-on experimentation and group collaboration than before. “Science for a long time was one and done. Now it’s not the product that we want to come out of it, it’s the skills,” Parness said. “We want our students to be actively engaged in the classrooms and when teachers are employing STEAM they will see students more engaged because the students are doing things that are of interest to them and they can see the real world relevance.” Parness works as a point person to assist teachers as they incorporate STEAM units in their classrooms. Falcons cheerleading – not just for Sundays By Mary Messina

If anyone is familiar with the Durham Middlefield Falcons cheerleading program you know, come Sunday, we cheer for the boys. That’s what we do on our “off time.” Yes, “off time.” Although we enjoy being there for the boys every Sunday, the real heart and soul of cheerleading is shown on the mat. Every year starting on Aug. 1, the girls work tirelessly towards Competition Day for their 2

minutes and 30 seconds to shine. They have one shot to get months of training for a routine as close to perfection as possible for that ultimate reward of first place. Some may ask, what is a cheerleading routine? Well, it consists of the cheer, stunting, jumps, tumbling, a pyramid and a dance. Here is a quick run-down of the components of the routine: The cheer is what many of you see during halftime of a football game. It is the most recognizable part of cheerleading. The cheer is comprised of some sassy talk about how great our team is, paired with some sharp arm movements referred to as “cheer motions.” Stunting is comprised of the squad or “the mount group” holding, tossing or flipping over a fellow cheerleader called a “flyer,” either at shoulder level or above their heads all while not letting her fall to the ground. Jumps are what they sound like; cheerleaders jumping off the ground in various synchronized formations. See Cheerleading, A6

New head coach This year the Coginchaug-Hale Ray Blue Devils welcome a new coach to lead the program, Erik Becker. Coach Becker is 39 years old and has 16 years of experience coaching high school football at Daniel Hand High School in Madison and Choate-Rosemary Hall in Wallingford. “My number one goal as a coach of young men is their safety and positive development. My objective is to use the game of football to teach positive life lessons and character development that will enhance their school curriculum and empower them to live positive and productive lives. I want to provide the ultimate positive high school football that will cause them to improve

physically, emotionally, and mentally,” Becker said. “I believe strongly in the power of football to teach positive, life-enhancing lessons. As an educator and part-time administrator, I see the value athletics has on rounding out and enhancing the school curriculum. Again, I am honored to have the opportunity to coach your sons and I look forward to building positive, lifelong relationships with the players and parents of the Coginchaug-Hale-Ray football community.” Becker’s squad, coming off a bye week, and is looking to even its record at 3-3 on Saturday, Oct. 21 against Lewis Mills. Game time is 1 p.m. Youth football update The Durham-Middlefield Falcons played home this past Sunday against the Vernon Vipers.

The Falcons A squad lost a thriller, 42-36. The locals fought hard. Trailing 30-12 at halftime, they managed to come all the way back only to fall just short on the final drive. Quarterback Jeremy Mangiameli and wide receiver Dylan Quincy had a great connection going all day long, compiling over 150 yards through the air and a touchdown. Mangiameli also managed to connect with Anthony Toth, Dalton Sisk, Jim Ahern and Hunter Matus as he racked up over 300 passing yards. Mangiameli, Toth and Sisk also managed to combine for over 300 yards on the ground and four touchdowns between them. This was largely due to them running behind a great offensive line. Tumbling consists of many tricks that you would see a gymnast perform as part of a floor routine. The pyramid is two or more connected mount groups. And finally, the dance consists of about four eight-counts that pulls together the theme of the routine. Sound like a lot to cram into that time-frame? It is! It takes months of planning by the coaches before the season even starts to pull off a well-orchestrated competition routine that includes all of the things listed above paired with some great music. Furthermore, it takes a special individual to be a cheerleader; one that is not only a strong athlete, but someone that has the heart of both a gymnast and dancer as well. The CTYFL Annual Cheer

IT’S ALL GOOD

Letters to the Editor

Not ready for ‘Freddy’ By Diana Carr Town Times

I used to love scary movies – the scarier the better – but I don’t have the heart for them anymore. Scary movies and I parted years ago, because I was not loving the nightmares they gave me. I remember watching one spine-chilling movie where some deranged fellow somehow managed to look like he was part of the brick wall in his prey’s apartment. Quite a trick, don’t you think? I don’t remember the specifics of the attire that allowed such a thing. But I do remember that he stepped out into the room, when our heroine least expected it (really, though, who would ever expect such a thing?!), and it did not go well for that poor girl. It must be 20 years since I saw that movie, and it still has a hold on me. I lost a lot of sleep over that one. I have a long history with these fright fests. My mother and stepfather took me to see “Psycho” at the tender age of 11. That flick gave me a very long run with a severe distrust of showers. I kept expecting Norman Bates to pop in, and I never took my eyes off the shower curtain. Suffice it to say that those showers were mighty quick.

Nothing to gain for Middlefield

Support for Neidhardt

not a teachable moment.

To the editor:

There have been a plethora of movies, it seems, where a person of ill intentions is hiding under the bed. Yeah, you guessed it. For many years I never hopped into my bed without checking under it first. A girl can’t be too careful, you know.

I read the article last week asking “Does it make sense to combine Durham and Middlefield?” and, as a resident of Middlefield, wanted to offer one opinion: No.

Peter Neidhardt is running for the Board of Finance. He has the skill sets to work for the citizens of Middlefield. He has a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering and has been employed at Eversource Energy since 1984. Currently he is manager of corporate investment planning for Eversource.

In recent years I gave this up. There are so many dust bunnies under there – and they’re the size of tumbleweeds – that I don’t think anyone could fit. Or would want to.

As a burrow of Durham, we would not be afforded the same level of representation we now receive as part of RSD 13. The benefit Middlefield has of being home to Lyman Orchards and Powder Ridge Ski area would be made negligible.

There were the “Jason” movies, of course. Rather graphic, but since I had no intentions of going to camp, I figured I was safe. He seemed to just go after the campers. So I weathered them pretty well. Movies about ghosts and spirits weren’t too hard on me. Visitors from the unseen realms do not give me the willies, but maybe that’s because I’ve never come face-to-face with one, and I don’t expect to. So I got through Amityville Horror no worse for the wear. That house had more than its share of troubles, and ghosts, as you may recall, but my house feels like a safe haven, and I had no fears of having an “Amityville” experience. The scariest thing in my house is the fridge making weird noises. No hauntings here. Just an old fridge.

So after years of this movie fare, the thrill is gone. Stark When I was 17 I went to a terror no longer has any allure movie at night, by myself, to for me. Middlefield residents would not benefit from such a consolidation but instead suffer an increased mil rate that is unsustainable for our families.

Furthermore, I believe the whole character of Middlefield would be compromised and make our town an unwelcome place for us to live, as most residents sought Middlefield as a home for one pre-existing reason or another. If the towns want to save money, there is a simple solution: Dissolve RSD 13, which tends to predominantly favor Durham in its decisions, and go with much smaller, more financially manageable schools for each town.

To the editor:

Peter has been active on DMIAB and ZBA. He is a family man with an engaging wife, Kathy, and three adult children. We need Peter on the Board of Finance. Please vote for this highly qualified member of our community. David M. Burgess Middlefield

Vote for Ruffino To the editor: Taryn Ruffino is an excellent candidate for Town Treasurer in Middlefield. She currently serves as a selectman. With certificates in finance and banking from NE College of Business and Finance, she has been employed in finance for 14 years. For three years, she was community office assistant manager at Liberty Bank.

Taryn is well-known for her work. She volunteered with Levi Coe Library and Carolyn Salzano currently works with Durham/MiddleMiddlefield field YFS and Lions Club. She spearheaded the 2016 Sesquicentennial Committee.

Common sense governance To the editor:

I am writing to ask for your vote on Nov. 7. I am running for a position on the Zoning Board of Appeals. The ZBA allows taxpayers an opportunity for relief from local regulations in the case of a true “hardship.” When we purchased our home in 1999, the existing acreage did not meet the requirements for a modern septic system. The ZBA granted a 10 foot variance, allowing the new system to be completed.

I encourage you to vote for Taryn Ruffino. Donna M. Golub Middlefield Town Clerk

Devoted public servant To the editor: David Burgess is a devoted public servant who previously served terms on Board of Selectmen, Board of Finance and as Town Treasurer. Now he is running for Board of Selectmen.

He is committed to the promotion of economic development and to safety in Middlefield. Having worked with Dave Please vote Democratic on Nov. 7. on the Board of Finance for four years, Elizabeth Dougan I know that he puts the town first in his Durham deliberations. We are lucky to have Dave, who has lived in Middlefield since 1987 with his wife Christine. Please vote for him in November. I value common sense local governance as a key to a strong community.

>> STEAM solve problems without the constraints,” Parness said.

While the position of K-12 STEAM Coordinator is new, the district has been moving towards STEAM integration for several years. Both Memorial Middle School and Strong Middle School have technology integration teachers.

Parness said, “There are a lot of things happening. I’m coming into a space where people are already using the terms and comfortable with the technology.”

Even the pre-K program at Brewster Elementary School has added age-appropriate STEAM units.

Some districts drop the “A” and use STEM units. Some students will get a chance to paint with a milkbased dye at an upcoming STEAM Camp, the first of its kind in RSD 13. The Oct. 23 STEAM Camp was designed after the Board of Education did not approve a complete before- and after-school enrichment program. Like that proposed program, but unlike STEAM initiatives taking place during the school day, the STEAM camp is fee-based. The STEAM Camp will take place at Brewster Elementary School, John Lyman Elementary School, and Memorial Middle School. Enrollment was capped at 22 for each location and filled up quickly. The campers will work on mini-pumpkin launchers, milk painting, and slime. The students will not be following step-by-step instructions. However, they will experiment, Parness said, and learn “the science behind why things are happening.” About a dozen Coginchaug Regional High School students have volunteered to help and earn service hours. The STEAM Camp takes advantage of the scheduled early dismissal so it is also helpful for families who have child care issues.

District officials hope to continue STEAM Camps on early dismissal days and are also looking to the summer as an opportunity for extended STEAM instruction, such as a district-run summer camp. STEAM, Parness said, helps the district promote “collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication,” referred to as “the four C’s.”
