Carolyn Adams, owner of Carolyn Adams Country Barn, has decided to retire and, with her departure, close the store that has been a fixture of Durham’s Main Street for decades. Even at 91 years of age, Adams said she is still not really ready for retirement. “I don’t know what I’m going to do afterwards. I’m going to be lost. I’m a worker. I’m not a retired person,” said Adams. “Am I looking forward to it? No, but I know it’s time to retire.” See Closing, A5

team building. Young Adult Librarian Karyn Leahy has seen escape rooms on the news. “They have gained a little steam, but they are definitely not something everyone has heard about,” said Leahy. “I wanted to provide something like that but something they can do here.”
Durham Interchurch Assistance annually puts together a Thanksgiving Holiday Basket Program for families and individuals. Stresses from financial difficulties, unemployment, medical problems, and other personal or family issues often create unanticipated hardships. Families or individuals having difficulties are encouraged to call Durham Human Services at 860-349-3153 to apply for a Thanksgiving basket.
The Durham Public Library’s scenario will involve the outbreak of a zombie virus with participants racing against their own infections.
Families and organizations can sponsor an individual or family. Donors can provide food gift cards in any amount to Human Services, Thanksgiving Program, Town Hall, P.O. Box 428 Durham, CT 06422, by Nov. 11. Donations of turkeys will be accepted on Thursday, Nov. 17, 9 to 10 a.m., at Durham Activity Center, 350 Main St.
Leahy said, “It’s going to turn them into undead within the hour unless they can open the case and retrieve the antidote. The case has six different locks and there are

this one for Halloween.
Each lock will involve different codes, passwords, or sleuthing. “Because there are so many different puzzles they will probably be breaking off into groups.” The puzzles are self-contained, so smart phones will not be much help. The puzzles and clues were designed by Leahy with the guidance of Breakout-edu, the creator of this particular game. Breakout-edu creates the cases and some of the tools, along with ideas for games. Some of the scenarios involve school-oriented puzzles involving math or history, but Leahy selected

“I hope I haven’t made it too difficult,” said Leahy. One session is already full. Leahy said if enough teenagers express interest a second session is possible. The escape room is a new offering, made possible by Durham’s Public Association of Library Supporters. According to Leahy, library costume parties are not a big Halloween draw for teenagers. “I like the idea of doing something interactive. It’s a little different than what we’ve done before.” Leahy will be in the room and there are three hint cards in the room if participants get stuck. But if the participants still can’t open the locks, “I think they turn into zombies at that point,” Leahy said.

As Leahy admits, it is hard to judge the difficulty of the traps when you already know the answers. Two library staff members are set to test out the room to see if it is too hard.

Adams started the store 42 years ago, but that was not her first work experience. She worked in a lighting factory with her late husband for about 20 years. “I ran the whole shop. I was superintendent of the whole shop. I was one of the first women that was given the chance,” Adams said. Adams recalled visitors to the factory taking note of a female superintendent because it was such an oddity in the late 50s and early 60s. “I didn’t want to leave the factory. I loved it.” Adams also had work experience before the lighting factory as a riveter towards the end of World War II, making metal boxes in
Durham. But her longest position was with the store that bears her name. “I opened the store with lighting fixtures and then I gradually added small pieces of furniture and different things.” Adams also came to love the furniture store as much as the factory work. The store started as The Lighting Barn of Durham. According to a store display, the first sale – a coffee mug decorated with flowers – took place on Nov. 1, 1974. Adams and her family lived in a house on the property that was eventually taken down to make room for the expanding store. Carolyn Adams Country Barn’s offerings include couches, chairs, tables, and all sorts of home decor
items. Adams will miss the people the most, noting that, over the years, she has served generations of costumers. “I’ve had the same people ever since I started. I’ve had costumers and now I have their kids come in.” The store is also known for its annual Christmas window of old-fashioned Christmas and winter decorations. While Adams will miss the people, she’ll also miss the work. “I’ve always worked. I don’t know how I’m ever going to stop. I don’t want to stop to do housework.”
Adams will retire to her home in Middletown with family.

Carolyn’s daughter Alana Adams will take over the building, which will be reopened as a new business. “Alana’s going to take over and she will change it,” said Carolyn Adams. “It’s time for her to do her thing. She’ll do very well because she’s very energetic.” Alana Adams currently operates Alana Adams Window Treatments and Area Rugs out of part of the same building, and said she started working in her mother’s store “when I was

IT’S ALL GOOD
Letters to the Editor
Call me ‘Princess Di’ By Diana Carr Special to Town Times
So here comes Halloween, and with it the chance to be someone else for a day. Or at least dream about being someone else for a day. Now I’m not going trick-or-treating (I worry about those tricks), but I thought I could try on some other identities for size, in my head. But not in a multiple personality kind of way!
particular fantasy, but mine seems to have settled in for the long haul. This is just a tad embarrassing to admit, but sometimes, when the wolf seems to be scratching at the door, I think what a lovely thing it would be for that wolf to be replaced by a stranger (hopefully knocking, not scratching) who is so relieved to have found me, at long last. Yes, I am the princess they have been looking for, and he would be happy to whisk me away to my island/kingdom. Bear in mind, if you would, that I would make for a most awesome princess. I would not just be lying
I wonder what it would be like to be a princess. I think most little girls have that

To the editor:
Vin Candelora has been the voice of fiscal responsibility in Connecticut’s State Legislature. He has constantly challenged Governor Malloy’s outrageous spending habits and has always called for balanced budgets. He understands that in order for Connecticut to thrive, we must have a friendly climate for our small businesses and encourage personal responsibility from our residents.
I am giving my full support to Dante Bartolomeo for State Senate in District 13. She serves the Town of Middlefield and her whole district well. She is informed and concerned about the people of our towns. She has been a very responsive State Senator who votes independently but passionately. There is no reason for voters to stray from her.

the age when girls notice boys. I mean, really notice them! I was rapidly developing a crush on my next door neighbor, and one day while we were rolling down the hill across the street, I was struck by what I thought was an innovative idea. “I’m Sleeping Beauty,” I told him, “and you have to wake me up.” Now I am sure he knew as well as I did that the only way to do that was with a kiss. So I lay there with my eyes closed and my arms crossed over my chest, just like I had seen in the Disney cartoons, and I waited to pucker up. And I waited. And I waited. My prince completely ignored me and just kept rolling down the hill. It was a very long sleep. On second thought, I am not doing the Sleeping Beauty thing again. It only leads to disappointment.

So it’s really been a tradition for us, we have always had it in our lives, so it made sense for us to go right into the country music game because that’s what we love and that’s what we grew up on. Q: How did growing up in Middlefield help inspire your new single “My Hometown? A: The whole song is really about our town. We wrote it, literally I had just got my permit, so you know how you have to log in your hours and drive everywhere? We were driving around Middlefield just writing this song about all the places we love and places that are in pretty much every town and we just hope that it reminds people of their hometown as well, even though it’s about Middlefield. Q: What’s it like hearing it played on the radio? A: Just last weekend we went to Arkansas, we headlined a County Fair out there, we were driving from the airport and we were listening to the radio station and we knew they had been playing our song but we had never heard it on the radio before. We were driving in the car and everybody is like “I hope we hear it, I hope we hear it and we get out, go to the hotel, everybody eats and does there thing. We get back into the car to go back to the car to go over to the fair for sound check and as we are literally pulling into the fair our song comes on the radio and the whole band was so excited they were like “wooooo, oh my god. It was crazy, it was so fun, it was so cool, just the coolest feeling ever. We’re just so proud of “My Hometown, it’s been most added for five weeks on the Country Music Road chart and No. 37. It’s climbing really fast, it has See Podcast, A17
