Two CRHS grads on Broadway By Mark Dionne Town Times

Thanks to a combination of talent, luck, and perseverance, two graduates of Coginchaug Regional High School have made it to Broadway, and are performing at the same time. Lana Gordon, a member of the CRHS class of ‘87, has played Velma Kelly in “Chicago” since Aug. 15 at the Ambassador Theater, and Michael Barra, from the CRHS class of ’04, has traveled with the new musical “A Bronx Tale” from the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey to Broadway’s Longacre Theater for a Dec. 1 opening. “It’s not even a small miracle to have two local kids on Broadway at the same time,” retired CRHS chorus teacher Lisa Larsen said of the improbability of such an occurrence. With 30 seconds remaining in Coginchaug Regional High School’s Thanksgiving Day football game against North Branford, the CRHS cheerleaders break from a cheer to watch North Branford, which was trailing, score a touchdown to make it 22-20 Coginchaug. A successful 2-point conversion sent the game to overtime. After a string of losses, CRHS could have used a win, but North Branford won the game in overtime. Coginchaug ended the year with a mark of 1-9. | Mark Dionne, Town Times

A member of CRHS’ Show Choir and Concert Choir, Gordon was also devoted to dance growing up. After graduation, she earned a spot on the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe. In addition to other productions, Gordon has appeared on Broadway before, in the original cast of “The Lion King” and in the 2000 revival of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” See Broadway, A2

Coginchaug takes state sportsmanship pledge By Mark Dionne Town Times

Coginchaug Regional High School has adopted a state initiative designed to improve the culture of school athletics. A group of CRHS athletes from the Captains Council presented the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference program, called the Class Act Schools initiative, to the student body at an assembly on Monday, Nov. 28.

Act Schools is a statewide initiative, the presentation pointed out that the goals fit into Regional School District 13’s Core Ethical Values of respect, responsibility, honesty, kindness, and courage. According to CRHS Athletic Director Nick Barbieri, CRHS was one of the first schools in the state to adopt the sportsmanship pledge.

Currently all schools in the Shoreline Conference have adopted the Class Act Schools initiative. It’s important, Barbieri said, to have the The initiative focuses on fair play and respect for competi- same standards and expectators, spectators, officials, and tions no matter the venue. the game. Michael appeared in local and school productions of shows like “Willy Wonka, Jr.,” “Annie,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and “Grease.” Cathy Barra remembered, “He was really into it from when he was young, even jumping around the house when we weren’t in a good mood. has worked in movies like “The Amazing Spider-Man” and on TV shows such as “Blue Bloods” and “Gotham,” but Broadway was always his dream. Although she has already seen it several times, Cathy Barra has chartered two almost-sold-out buses to go see “A Bronx Tale” in April. The buses will be filled with locals, including some of Michael’s former teachers. “I absolutely love the show,” said Cathy Barra. “He’s just so humbled and amazed and happy. He’s in a good place.”

Growing up, both Gordon and Barra received the support and encouragement of their families. Larsen recalled the support Gordon received from her mother, Zilla Gordon, who worked in the RSD13 school system. Cathy Barra, who coincidentally currently works as a teacher’s aid at Brewster Elementary School, noted her son’s family support. Michael received many pep talks from his mother, car trips to rehearsals and auditions from his father, and, according to Cathy, extra-ordinary support from his sister BreAnna. “She is so supportive of her brother.”

Larsen wrote of the difficulty of Barra and Gordon’s Broadway achievement, “I think that both of them get great credit for their talents and perseverance.”

dress code and instructing spectators to attend games “with torsos completely covered.”

Many of the guidelines focus on spectator behavior, with an expectation to cheer on your own team but refrain from jeering the opposing team. CRHS student Matt Woznyk explained, “We focus on our own team and cheer them on rather than belittle the other team.”

“Athletics is an extension of the school day. All school codes apply,” one student noted. Another guideline enforces respect for the National Anthem. At the professional level, numerous athletes have chosen to kneel or otherwise opt out of the National Anthem, sparking some controversy.

Signs in the audience will also be pre-approved by athletic directors and will only refer to the spectator’s team. Air horns and whistles are banned and other noisemakers can only be used during dead ball situations at outdoor games with AD approval.

As much of the initiative focuses on spectator behavior, signs with reminders of the sportsmanship expectations will be posted in gyms. According to the CIAC website, announcers are to remind crowds of the expectations and refrain from criticizing plays or calls.

Seventeen guidelines were presented as part of the initiative. Students on Monday cheered for two of those guidelines – one limiting band music to dead ball times and another instructing audiences to cheer for their own team, but not taunt or jeer the opposition.

A3

Monday’s presentation also highlighted theme nights for games, discounted tickets, and encouragement for students to attend games. “We

need everyone in the school to be part of this movement,” Lauren Donnelly said. Schools adopting the initiative are self-policing with administrators, coaches, and student leaders expected to correct or, as the CIAC puts it, “take action” against instances of poor sportsmanship. As CIAC Executive Director Karissa Niehoff writes, “By choosing to be a part of the program a school is defining what is considered acceptable actions within interscholastic athletics, and then challenging its student leaders to address concerns either within their school or with an opponent.” The culture of CRHS athletics has been undergoing review and change recently. In addition to a new athletic director, the district and department are responding to recommendations from a recent CIAC review and the last accreditation process.

Other guidelines include following the home school’s

Communication with parents, through meetings and handbooks, and clearly stated expectations are part of the goals. A subset of the Captains Council, which is a collection of student-athletes Barbieri estimates to be about onethird of all athletes, met to work on the initiative and brainstorm with councils from other schools. According to Barbieri, the group will meet again in March after the winter sports season to review the sportsmanship drive.

Scholastic achievements Julia Davis and Natalie Davis of Middlefield were named to the first marking period high honor roll at Sacred Heart Academy. Town Times prints scholastic achievements of local students. Company policy requires verification from the school, i.e., a copy of the letter, email or certificate received by the student.

IT’S ALL GOOD

Letters to the Editor

Now I lay me down to sleep

To the editor: A recent edition of Town Times had a letter from a Durham man who complained about the riff-raff who stole his Trump sign right off his lawn. I wonder if he’s the mirrored-twin who stole my Hillary sign right off my lawn, not once but twice!

By Diana Carr

I love bedtime. Of course, I fought it tooth and nail when I was a kid, as I imagine most kids do. Every night I would beg for that meeting with the Sandman to be pushed back, maybe a half-hour or so. It never was. But now bedtime is my friend.

The letter-writer then thanked God that the election wasn’t stolen by the media, Obama or any other liberal vermin. I’m sure if Trump had lost he would have been complaining about voter fraud in the cities rigging the election. No, this election wasn’t rigged in the way Trump bloviated about. But this election was rigged ... This election was manipulated by a foreign power with the direct intent to get Trump elected. According to the See Letters, A5

And it’s coming earlier and earlier these days. I get a head start on it by snoozing in front of the TV every night, at a ridiculously early hour. I will feel the eyelids drooping, and I tell myself I will rest my weary eyes during the commercial, and you know how that goes. I swim back up to consciousness two hours later, realize I need to brush my teeth before heading to

bed, feel that that is a gargantuan task, and decide I need more sleep before tackling it. By the time I actually make it to bed I have already slept a good part of the night away. Oh, but when I finally crawl under my comforter, it’s total bliss. Like I’ve just come home to an old friend. There are so many perks. For starters, anything that’s troubling me is just going to have to wait until the morning. There is finally peace inside my head. My bed is queen-sized, which allows me to roll all around and take up as much room as I like. And I like taking up a lot of room. I’ll roll from side-to-side, just because I can. In the warm months I slide onto sheets that have been hanging on my clothesline, and I can

smell the outdoors on them. And getting under that thick comforter feels like a welcome respite from the chill in the air (even though the heat is at a very respectable temperature) that seems to hover in my house during the winter months. I always nod off immediately, waking up for brief moments during the night. These brief moments are just fine with me. I see my kitty, Shiloh, curled up at the foot of the bed. I see my little green Buddha figurine – the one that glows in the dark – on my nightstand, smiling at me, and I think of my little Swedish grandson, who has one just like it. I may have just emerged from the most wonderful dream. I’ll not remember it in the morning, but for those few seconds I hold it close to me. The best ones are when I dream that I am with my boys, and all the miles between us have vanished into thin air, and all is right with the world again. Years ago, and for many of them, when I had jobs that I did not want to go to, I would wake up and pray that when I looked at the clock, I still had a lot of night left. It would be such a relief to wake up and find out that I was at the beginning of my night’s sojourn, rather than the end. Even the middle of it was okay. And though my days are good now, and I have no earthly reason anymore for waging battle with the clock, I still do. Because I am not fond of swinging my feet onto a cold floor in a dark house, with the black-as-tar night staring at me through my window. It puts me in a mood. So I check out the time with baited breath, hoping I have hours before I must leave my beloved sanctuary. Sometimes I decide to remain in the dark (Sorry! I couldn’t resist!) and not see what time it See Carr, A5

>> Letters heads of the CIA and NSA, hackers originating in Russia targeted the Democratic Party with the obvious intent to influence the outcome in Trump’s favor. This is unprecedented in the history of our republic. There needs to be a thorough Congressional investigation into this travesty, including what role Trump himself played in this manipulation. Trump’s extensive holdings in Russia, his close relationship with Putin, and the fact that this didn’t happen to the Republicans leads me to believe that Trump and his campaign were in on this. Will this ever get done with the Republicans in charge? You know it won’t, which is why we need to keep up the pressure on all the politicians. We will never forget this. Leo Zirolli Durham

is, lest it be bad news. And sometimes, when my courage has found its way back to me, I will see that it’s 3:30 or 4 and I am on the homestretch because I get up at 5. And probably because I had packed away so much sleep time while perched in front of the TV, I often stay awake. But I lie there until 5 anyway, because anything earlier would make me feel sorry for myself. I’ve been up since the middle of the night, I would tell myself all day, and I would make myself more tired just thinking about it. Of course, now the cycle repeats itself. I will fall asleep that night, in front of the TV, again at a ridiculously early hour. So I guess, considering my “lights out not that soon after supper,” way of life, I really should not expect any party invitations (I didn’t expect any.) Unless you happen to have a queen-sized bed for my napping pleasure.

Books sought To the editor: Approximately one month ago I took a full box of children’s books to the recycle area of the Durham-Middlefield town dump. These were placed in the recycling area by accident; they were not planned to be disposed of. Included were many Dr.

Suess books, and others. These books were all inscribed either to Michael or Mikey or to Matthew or Matt and signed by Mom, Dad or both. But most of all they were filled with memories. These were all our boys’ books accumulated over almost 40 years and we were saving for our grandchild.

Regional School District 13 offers a play-based screening for children ages 3 and 4. The screening allows parents the opportunity to have their child observed by district professionals in an informal, fun setting to ensure their child’s development is progressing at an age-appropriate level. Participation is also a prerequisite for a child to be considered as a role model for the preschool program. The next screenings are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 9, 9 and 11 a.m., at Brewster Elementary School, 126 Tuttle Road. All district 4-year-olds and children turning 3 by Aug. 31, 2017 are welcome.

If anyone has any of the books we will be more than glad to exchange the book you have with a new book. If you can help us we would be most appreciative. We can be reached at 860-874-2096.

Parental permission and involvement are requirements in the screening. Children must separate from parents during the screening to get an accurate assessment. Parents have the opportunity to discuss any concerns with the school psychologist during the screening. For more information and to schedule an appointment, contact Crystal at 860-349-7208.

MIDDLEFIELD — Myrtle (Kendall) Tabor, 87, of Middlefield, beloved wife of John W. Tabor, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016, at Masonicare in Wallingford. Myrtle was born in Hamilton, Ontario Canada, the daughter of the late Edwin and Phoebe (Henderson) Kendall. Prior to her retirement, Myrtle was served as a nurse, for over 25 years with Middlesex Hospital. She was an active volunteer with KUHN Employment Opportunities and many other local organizations. She was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing, knitting and making stained glass. Besides her husband, John, Myrtle is survived by her three children, Michael Tabor, of Middlefield, Katherine Tabor, of South Carolina, Ted Tabor, of Middlefield; and her sister, Betty Hunter, of Ontario. She was predeceased by her sister, Bernice Hicks. A funeral liturgy was held Friday, Nov. 25, at Saint Colman Church, Middlefield. Burial was held in Middlefield Cemetery. CENTER TUFTONBORO, N.H. — Gregory Henry Tierney departed this life on Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, at his home in Center Tuftonboro, N.H., at the age of 87. He was the loving and devoted husband of Barbara (Howie) Tierney for 65 years. They had dated in high school, he being the football player while she was the head cheerleader. They made their home in Middlefield, Conn. until moving to New Hampshire in 2003. Greg had an amazing work ethic and never seemed to be idle. He enjoyed working with his hands and always took pride in the fruits of his labor. He was a dedicated member of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from Northeast Utilities in 1991, yet he worked multiple jobs in order to provide for his family. As Greg aged, he remembered fondly the days of working on farms for Earl Tewksbury and Burt Way. Being with his family, spending time with his many friends, vacationing in Amish country, collecting

buggies and sleighs, and working on antique cars were important aspects of his life. In addition to his wife, Barbara, Greg leaves behind his daughters, Jane Tierney, of Middlefield, Linda Zona and her husband, Raymond, of Middlefield, and Pat Morrissey and her husband, Michael, of Clinton; his grandchildren, Dan and Sarah Morrissey, Melanie Muszynski, Meghan Breton, and Elizabeth Quinn; as well as his great-grandchildren, Katie, Madeline, Jonah, Joey, and Christopher, are also left to grieve his loss. He was predeceased by his parents, Marie and Henry Tierney; as well as his sisters, Ida Jones and Virginia Birmingham. A funeral liturgy will be held on Thursday, Dec. 1, at Saint Colman’s Church in Middlefield. Burial with military honors for his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict took place at the Middlefield Cemetery. EDITORIAL

New legislature, but the same old problems are still around Now that the election is over, we know who we’re sending to Hartford to begin a new legislative session in the new year. We also know that they’ll be working under the same dark deficit cloud that’s been hanging over the state Capitol for far too long. The newcomers as well as veterans will be called upon to work on a two-year budget that’s already projected to be $1.3 billion short, with recent estimates showing tax revenue on a continuous slide through fiscal year 2019. Meanwhile, we’re only halfway through a fiscal year that’s about $68 million in the red. Clearly, the General Assembly and Gov. Dannel P. Mal-

loy are still a long way from solving the ongoing financial woes of a state that, by some measures, has never fully recovered from the recession of 2008. Already this fiscal year, the state has cut more than $800 million in spending and has laid off nearly 1,100 workers, with 500 more layoffs set for January. State agency heads have provided Malloy with various options to accommodate a “likely” 10 percent cut in discretionary funding. Chronic underfunding of the Teachers’ Retirement System and the State Employees’ Retirement System is an area of great concern, calling for about $302 million in additional funding next year.

Retiree health costs may add $66 million to that total. Other bills coming due soon pertain to previous state borrowing to balance the budget, property-tax offsets, and transportation improvements. The cost-cutting options presented to Malloy by department heads include closing some DMV offices; cutting housing subsidies for people with AIDS; privatizing services for more people with intellectual or developmental disabilities; eliminating daycare subsidies for thousands of

children; cutting financial aid at the University of Connecticut or eliminating 286 staff positions there; and eliminating a program that helps veterans find jobs. This situation didn’t arise overnight — “I don’t believe people understand that a lack of paying the bills as they should have been paid has led to the current difficulties the state of Connecticut is living with,” the governor recently told an Associate Press reporter.

Regardless, only Malloy working with the new General Assembly, can put the state back on its financial feet. With the changes made on Nov. 8 — Republicans now at parity with Democrats in the Senate, and some new faces in the House, including in leadership positions — the coming session presents an opportunity for elected officials in Hartford to work together to put this state on a sounder financial footing. — Originally published in the Meriden Record-Journal
