Construction urged for CRHS athletic complex By Mark Dionne Town Times

The idea of new construction to finish or add to the athletic complex at Coginchaug Regional High School has surfaced in advance of the budget presentation for 2017-2018. The athletic complex was completed without bathrooms, adjacent locker rooms, or lights when funding ran out on the project, which was approved by Durham and Middlefield residents. Bathrooms were part of the original plans, but exist only as a slab and some pipe and electrical work. Sometimes a good picture takes dumb luck. We had published an article about the United Church of Durham taking down this giant and sick tree but I didn’t know when it would be done. I happened to be taking a left from 68 onto Main Street and saw the crew at work. I pulled over (my car may need one of those “Makes Frequent Stops” tags), jumped out, and got this picture. The tree work was very quick. A few minutes later and I would have missed it. I like the composition of this picture, especially since I was somewhat limited by a safety fence.

New year bringing new laws for state

I thought I might be disappointed when I looked back through 2016 searching for pictures. After all, much of our news locally seemed to be about buildings – the mixed use debate over Durham’s Main Street, the closing of Korn Elementary School, and, more recently, the plan to create a public safety complex.

A new law taking effect Sunday prohibits employers from asking applicants to disclose their criminal histories on job applications.

These are important stories, but buildings, especially municipal buildings, tend to make for boring photographs. And buildings that do not yet exist, like the proposed public safety complex, are tricky to photograph.

The prohibition only applies to the application itself. Employers can still ask job seekers about their criminal history during an interview and require a background check prior to offering a job. Proponents say those with past convictions have a harder time getting job interviews, and the change will give them the chance to explain their criminal histories.

Yet when I looked through the folders, I found more pictures that I liked from the See Photos, A2

By Mike Savino Record-Journal staff

Proponents of the law, which the legislature passed overwhelmingly, say the prohibition will make it easier for many people to find work and, in some cases, rebuild their lives. Vicki Berry and her husband Peter made this amazing quilt out of men’s shirts. It was on display in the Durham Fair’s Needlework Barn this year where Vicki gave quilting demonstrations. I’ve photographed Vicki before in her role as Children’s Librarian at Middlefield’s Levi E. Coe Library. While she might not be an eager photography subject, she is patient. I took about eight pictures of her next to the quilt before I figured out that the quilt had to be the entire background and got this shot thanks to Vicki being a good sport. I suspect quilters know not to rush things.

Critics complained that the question is a crucial part of screening applicants. The bill does allow employers to ask for criminal histories on applications when required by federal law or for positions where the employer See Laws, A9

past year than I expected. Sometimes it was the photo itself that caught my eye. Sometimes I remembered the story behind the photo or the luck and patience (and, at least once in a while, skill) that went into them. So here are my selections for the year in photos. I hope you are not disappointed. Happy New Year.

This is from Durham Park and Recreation’s Easter Egg Hunt. I try to avoid taking pictures of people posing for the camera. I think people often look more interesting when they are focused on something else, like a field of hidden eggs. This is Julia, making a repeat Year in Pictures appearance. Julia knows me and when she sees me at local events like the Community Round-Up she does things like jump in a box and tell me it will be a great picture. Sometimes I trip over her and sometimes I wind up with a picture. Because of that smile, the pictures are usually pretty good.

I wanted to take Ida McLaughlin’s picture as soon as I saw her at Middlefield’s Sesquicentennial Parade protecting herself from the sun with a big red and white umbrella. She seemed skeptical about why I would want to take her picture — keep in mind I’m pointing the camera away from a parade to take this — but it was the first picture of the day where I immediately thought, “That’s a keeper.” I’m a sucker for dogs. If you put a dog in a bandana, I will take its picture. So many kids ask me how to get their picture in the paper. I should start telling them, “Just be a dog wearing a bandana. If you can’t do that, stand next to a dog wearing a bandana.”

It’s all about perspective. I was not sure what I would see when I went to the last day of Korn Elementary School. I did not know if kids and teachers would be crying or upset. It was actually more of a party atmosphere. After all, for these kids the last day of Korn school was more importantly the last day of their school year and the start of summer. The entire school is gathered for this picture. When I stood on a barrier for an elevated perspective, which is how I would normally approach this shot, a bunch of dumpsters and POD moving units became visible in the background. By crouching down, I was able to hide the dumpsters and moving units and get a picture of blacktop, the school community, and trees. Perspective. It matters.

I was determined to get a good picture of Jared Munro playing guitar with the School of Rock house band at the Durham Fair. Musicians and performers can be tough to photograph because they can get blocked by a microphone or their own hair and often make weird faces. Jared committed all of these crimes before I got this one.

The photographic technique I employed here is called “Point the Camera at Mary.” That’s Mary Kaliszewski in the center belting it out during an impromptu sing-a-long of a “High School Musical” song the kids all knew by heart. It’s a great picture of Mary, but also a nice representation of the camaraderie, fun, and rock star awesomeness that is part of the PaperHouse experience.

I’m cheating a little on this picture. I had other responsibilities during this PaperHouse Durham Fair performance and did not take this picture. (Photo credit: Chris Balay) I like the fun of this picture — the jumps, the colors, and the expressiveness. I often don’t get a picture of an event I have to write about or want a picture of a moment that I missed and have to ask for someone else’s photograph. Sometimes knowing who else took pictures is pretty useful.

This picture was much harder to get than I originally thought it would be. At this year’s Relay for Life charity event, people who are not 46 years old got into these inflatable ball suits and slammed into each other. I figured I could get a picture of the violent collisions and the fun people were having. Unfortunately, these suits don’t provide a clear view of who is inside and the pictures were just unpleasant blurs. It looked like packaging material fighting. I had to wait for someone to get smacked to the ground near me so I could take a picture through the top opening, while not getting smacked to the ground myself. Fortunately for me, Tess McIntyre got knocked to the ground near me and helped me out by not looking injured or distressed when I got her picture.

Town meetings are visually boring. People sit in chairs and talk to other people sitting in chairs. As important as they may be to our civic life, they make for awful photographs. This is from Durham’s Planning Charrette, held to solicit input from residents about Durham’s future. I took about 10 pictures of people milling around, and another three of people listening to an organizer talk while shooting me why-areyou-taking-my-picture looks out the sides of their eyes. I never intended to use this picture in the paper. I just wanted to record the things that people wrote down as “Town Strengths” so I could write about them in the article. When I got the picture on my computer, I liked how the printing, in capitals and Sharpie, remained legible and how the collected opinions visually summarized the intent of the meeting. I used it a few times for Plan of Conservation and Development articles because it was so much better than another “people sitting down at a meeting” picture.

THE YEAR IN PHOTOS — CONTINUED This is from a CRHS “pink out” basketball game for breast cancer awareness. I like that the picture is about the unison of the cheerleaders and the pink message. I have photographed several of the subjects of my 2016 favorite pictures before. I’ve taken pictures of Katie Hughes (right), owner of Perk on Main, at different community events in the past. Katie is a big presence in the community. But she is inevitably tending to a crepe pan and I get a picture of her with her head down and half her face hidden. When she won Connecticut’s Small Businesswoman of the Year award I got a picture of her next to Representative Rosa DeLauro that I liked, but DeLauro was kind of a ball of motion and it was a picture of Katie reacting. So I was happy when the Taste of Durham organizers let me in early and I was able to get this picture of Katie smiling and not looking down. It was also nice to get a picture of Tina Hurlbert (left), who so often helps out when Perk is out and about.

I almost didn’t take this picture. Driving past, I spotted the enormous line snaking around Dari Serv and thought it might be a good picture. Of course, all those people came with cars and I didn’t really feel like looking for a parking spot. I also thought the people in line might think I was making fun of them for waiting in that enormous line, which I kind of was. I didn’t think too much of the picture until it got posted on-line, where it became incredibly popular. People loved looking at it and saying to their out-of-town friends, “This is the place I’ve been telling you about. These are the lines.” George Manguilli (left) made a life saving donation of 67 percent of his liver to his brother Joe. When I told their story in April, 2016 both brothers emphasized the importance of organ donation and the urgency people waiting on the lists feel. I hoped this picture and their story encouraged people to become an organ donor, and to make sure family members knew.

The students often help me out with graduation pictures. Around the ceremony, they tend to goof off and generally have great smiles for the event. This saves me from having to take a picture of someone behind a podium talking. These three students helped me out by decorating their mortarboards with graduation messages, “We did it,” “Mischief Managed,” and “The best is yet to come.”

I had toyed with the idea of hunting you down at one of the department stores and sitting on your lap, just to make sure you got my wish list, but the last time I did this you announced, a tad too loudly, I thought, that your leg was going numb. Frankly, I am not up for the humiliation. So I will affix an entire book of stamps to the envelope, just to ensure its safe arrival, because the North Pole is quite a distance from Connecticut. Although there are days, and lots of them, that I feel like Connecticut and the North Pole are one and the same. Alright, let’s get to it. descent. But I know you are really hitting up the cookies at this time of the year, Santa, and I hope that you have not packed on too many pounds. A fat man stuck in my chimney is not a scenario I relish. So please be sure to suck it in, ol’ fella. And I don’t wish to nag, but please be sure to clean up after the reindeer. Last year they left their calling card, if you catch my drift. And it is not a card I want calling! Now, regarding presents. My six-year-old heart just loves presents. So please, Santa dear, don’t think you need to skimp on them because I am – ahem! – of a certain age. It would be best if you didn’t drop off anything that has to do with cleaning the house. No vacuums, etc. If you were to take a quick looky-loo around the house, I think you would find this request self-explanatory. In the summer I am out playing and in the winter I am on the couch reading, so such things will, for the most part, go unused. Food is always good. I like to eat. I like it a lot. And not to make your job more difficult, but it needs to be vegan and gluten-free. Maybe Mrs. Claus could whip up something. No shoes, of course. I won’t wear them.

>> Construction From A1

Members of the public have shown up at Board of Education meetings to advocate for construction at the athletic complex. Approximately 50 members of the public attended the BOE’s Dec. 14 meeting. Several members of the public also took the unusual step of attending a BOE subcommittee meeting, the Education Resources Committee meeting on Dec. 7. BOE subcommittee meetings are open to, but rarely attended by, the public. At the BOE meeting on Dec. 14, Nick Faiella of Middlefield, president of the Coginchaug Football Club said, “For a number of different reasons, the project has been at a standstill for over six years now. It’s time to finish the job that we started.”

The athletic complex at Coginchaug Regional High School, shown here during the Thanksgiving Day football game, has been in operation for several years without lights or permanent bathrooms, which were part of the original plans. A public push has recently encouraged construction on the complex.

Faiella said the athletic complex is an extension of the high school and the community deserves the completion of the project. “We would have never built a school without permanent bathrooms ...,” Faiella said. “I would highly recommend that the board agrees to move forward with this long term capital improvement and that it also be financed over a long term basis. This would have the least impact on the annual budget process.”

represents an investment that will not last. “We’d like it to be a reflection of the pride we have in our school and in this community,” she said.

Jen Zettergren of Durham noted that the communities had already put money into this phase of construction. The plumbing work already installed, Zettergren said,

In past discussions of the athletic complex costs, people have suggested that booster clubs or revenue from evening events could help offset costs.

In May of 2012, the district received a 24-month deadline from Durham’s Planning and Zoning Commission to complete the bathrooms, which were part of the site plan. In the fall of 2012, the BOE considered three options for the bathroom building. A complete field house with a finished interior was priced

A third and cheaper option to build a smaller bathroom building on the slab was discarded because the existing slab was not designed for a smaller building and would have to be dug up, disturbing plumbing and electrical lines. The deadline was later lifted by the P&Z with the consent of Durham resident and athletic complex neighbor Karen Cheyney, who was a party in a lawsuit and stipulated agreement with the BOE. Even without a deadline, the district is under a requirement to complete permanent restrooms and also under a requirement to complete restrooms before installing lights on the field. Discussion of the field house was scheduled to continue in the Education Resources Meeting on Thursday, Dec. 29. If the project moves forward it would either have to be incorporated into a regular annual budget, or voted on separately as a bond vote.

So Santa, now that we’ve gotten the business out of the way, there’s an issue that needs addressing. Last year I left you milk and cookies, and you left a note saying that you would prefer a shot of tequila, to warm your old bones on that frosty night, and some beef jerky. Well, who’s on the naughty list now?! We cannot have our dear Santa getting a DUI. I know, you’re thinking that the police will never be able to catch you, you having that “flying through the air” thing going. But still! A tipsy Santa would be bound to mix up everybody’s presents, and you will not be standing in good favor with anyone on Christmas morning. And the beef jerky has nitrates, which are very bad, so you can’t have any. (And if you

do happen to somehow meet up with some tequila, I am telling Mrs. Claus. I’m putting her on speed dial. So who better be good now?!)
