Coginchaug High girls play for Hand’s hockey team By Mark Dionne Town Times

Skylar Rascati and Carina Mancini, Coginchaug student-athletes, are in the middle of their high school hockey season, although CRHS does not have a team.

Durham’s Time Out Taverne and Middletown’s It’s Only Natural were neighbors at the Taste of Durham, bringing together, from left, Olivia Blue from It’s Only Natural, Jack Castiglione and Lisa Franceschet from Time out Taverne, and a visiting Ruth Vizard.

Rascati and Mancini play for the Daniel Hand High School Tigers in Madison through a special arrangement between the schools and families. Two years ago, Nick Barbieri, CRHS’ athletic director, helped arrange a co-op with Lyman Hall and Haddam-Killingworth. Several CRHS boys and one girl, Kaylie LeMere, took advantage of that opportunity.

The arrangement with Hand is different and it allows for the first time female CRHS hockey players to skate on an all-girls team. Mancini always expected to be playing hockey in high school, but could not know where. “I saw the opportunity and I was shocked,” she said. Mancini grew up playing hockey, starting with street hockey at 5 or 6 years old. Her parents put her in a “Learn to Skate” class and she first played hockey at age seven. To her mind, she started late. “Usually people start playing hockey when they’re like 4.” After playing for multiple teams growing up,

including the Shoreline Sharks, a travel team she still plays for, Mancini said she enjoys being on a high school team and appreciates the recognition, conference competition, and shorter schedule that comes with it. The student-athletes practice five days per week and play against other Connecticut high school teams outside of the usual conference arrangements due to the lack of teams within the conferences. Rascati transitioned into the hockey world after about eight years of intense figure skating. “Figure skating got really competitive and I would have had to be at the rink all the time,” interfering with life and schoolwork. At 13 years old and with a hockey-playing brother, Rascati decided to give hockey a shot for a summer.

As much as travel time and distances allow, the hockey players participate in team activities. “They’re all really nice and approachable,” said Rascati of her teammates, who only knew Mancini and one other player before joining the team.

Tad McGwire coaches the Hand High School girls hockey team and said he’s glad to have Rascati,

McGwire coached his three sons when they were growing up but, impressed by UConn’s Geno Auriemma, decided to coach a girls team. McGwire has coached the team for five years and considers the outside girls an asset. “It’s the first time we’ve ever had girls outside the program skate with us,” McGwire said. “They’re great. All three girls are terrific.”

and from there I lost the fear [of tearing it again] and kind of went for it,” Rascati said. Mancini is also a two-sport athlete, with plans to play CRHS softball in the spring. According to Barbieri, Rascati and Mancini will receive recognition at the CRHS sports banquet just like the other athletes. CRHS currently has co-op opportunities for hockey and boys swimming. Last year, the school also sent gymnasts to another school under a co-op arrangement.

Rascati’s and Mancini’s parents said that they were happy to have their daughters on the team. Lou Rascati, Skylar’s father, said the only way it could be better would be if CRHS had a rink. According to Carina and Skylar, most of their classmates think it’s cool that they play hockey. Mancini said her friends have gotten used to her schedule, which she describes as, “I play hockey all the time.” The next home game for the Tigers, who have a record of 9-4-2, is on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m. against Amity-North Haven-Cheshire. Then, tournament play begins.

Emergency services: Check your house numbers The members of Durham Volunteer Fire Company, Durham Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Durham Emergency Management Department and Durham Resident State Trooper would like to remind residents to check your house numbers and mail boxes to make sure emergency responders are able to locate your address in time of need. Remember, an emergency can happen any time, day

or night, so please assist our emergency services departments by checking your address numbering and take steps to assist us, so we can assist you. The Town of Durham Reflective Sign Program is part of a community initiative to help our first responders locate your home during an emergency. The signs are made of a highly-visible, reflective, fade-resistant material that is visible to first responders day

or night. The reflective signs are available to purchase for $15 and can be picked up in the Building Department, at Town Hall, with the completion of order form. Or, go to the Town of Durham website and click on “Emergency Services” to download the order form. E-mail questions to SaferDurhamAlert@townofdurhamct.org.

Proceeds from the sale of the reflective signs will benefit DART (Durham Animal Response Team) and Durham Volunteer Fire Department-Fire Explorers. On behalf of the Durham Volunteer Fire Company, Durham Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Department of Emergency Management, we thank you for your continued support of all of our first responders.

IT’S ALL GOOD

Show me the magic: It’s all around us By Diana Carr Special to Town Times

I remember a scene from a movie I saw a long time ago — I don’t remember its name — wherein Roy Scheider stood up in a rowboat, flung his arms out wide, and called out to the heavens, “Show me the magic.” I believe the man was at the end of his rope. I think I know how he felt. I’m ready for some magic, too. Who isn’t?

morning, but it is more like my mind is doing jumping jacks. Not much in the way of Buddha-like thoughts make their way in. Oh, but today I was Buddha, and the birds sang for me.

Soon after, I saw a plump red cardinal just outside my kitchen window. You’d think I just came upon a pot of gold, so excited do I get when I see these beautiful birds. Somehow I have latched onto the notion that they are the harbingers of good fortune. They bring, for me, glad tidings. EveryI waltz past magic every day, thing is going to be OK, I and never even see it, so know it now. filled is my head with worToday I can expect a call ries and mundane matters. around noon from my son My mind starts grappling in Sweden, when he is out with this thing and that, walking his dog, and a call even before my wee head this evening from my other leaves the pillow in the son in North Carolina (they morning. I realize I have managed to squeeze all the really do have names!). And juiciness out of my life, and those calls mean the world to me, and more. Being their I want the “juicy” back. So Mom has always seemed I’ve decided to go the way of our friend, Roy. Show me like magic to me. the magic. The hunt is on. I will spend the day being followed from room to The day is barely out of the room by my devoted kitgate, and already magic and I, now that I am paying ties. And I will not take that for granted. I always bend attention, are beginning down and pet them, and to get acquainted. When I often, but today I will really was meditating this mornsoak in all that love made ing, before the first crow of manifest. the rooster, I heard birds singing. How long have I will go on my computer, they been there? I wonand rather than mindlessly dered. I say I meditate every zipping through my mes-

sages, I will be in awe of the fact that I can be in contact with anyone in the world. When I was growing up, if someone had told me this, I would have told them to go back to their science fiction novel and stop bothering me with such nonsense. I will shovel snow this afternoon, and instead of whining about what I consider to be a most unpleasant task, I will see the magic that out of seemingly nothing, out of the heavens, comes this fluffy white stuff that I can walk in and play in and build a snowman out of. And yes, shovel. How the brown of the season can be transformed into such loveliness, is awesome. I will go for a walk today, and I will pass the woods next to my house. I will reminisce, as I always do, about the days when my young sons and I romped through those woods, exploring, making tracks in the snow, playing hide-and-seek. And before I start feeling too sorry for myself because those days are long gone, I will think how lucky I am to have had them in the first place. Those times were true magic, in every sense of the word. Tonight I will plop down in front of my TV and I will give some thought to the

amazing technology that keeps me entertained night after night, bringing the world to me. The pictures and people and sound that have somehow materialized before me, with colors and many channels to choose from and a remote that means I do not have to budge an inch off of my couch. This, too, smacks of a science fiction novel. Sunrises and sunsets are good, but I always manage to miss them. Note to self: don’t miss them. I am available for both of them, but I keep forgetting to revel in these daily treasures. If they don’t let you know how miraculous life is, I don’t know what does. I should go out and look at the stars, too. My Magic Box (a.k.a. TV) will wait for me, I’m sure. The late spiritual teacher, Wayne Dyer, said that just being alive is a miracle. A lot had to come together for us to make an appearance here. And keep us here. That alone can boggle my mind. So Roy, I hope you found your magic. I’m finding mine. Diana Carr, a resident of Durham, is the author of “More Reflections on Everything Things.” This second collection of her columns is available on CreateSpace and Amazon.

Letter to the Editor Heartfelt thanks To the editor: I’d like to offer my heartfelt thanks to the Durham EMTs for coming out recently to help my son with a medical emergency. You are true heroes and angels of mercy. Laura and Arthur Siegartel Durham

Limit on state bonding gets bipartisan support As fixed costs continue to cripple Connecticut’s budget, lawmakers from both sides are voicing the need for a hard limit on state borrowing. Republicans have been calling for a statutory limit on bonding for some time, but at least 35 House Democrats have also co-sponsored a bill this session.

Republicans have proposed bond caps annually, even pitching them as amendments to other bills to try to force votes, but House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz, D-Berlin, said in a statement his caucus also wants to ensure “tax dollars are spent as efficiently as possible.” “By limiting future bonding See Bonding, A16

The legislature’s nonpartisan Office of Fiscal Analysis reported in its annual Fiscal Accountability Report, released in November, that debt service will grow from 10 percent of the General Fund budget in fiscal year 2015 to 13 percent in fiscal year 2020. It also said borrowing supported by the General Fund has grown by 72 percent since fiscal year 2007.

Sen. Joe Markley, R-Southington, said the General Assembly needs to set a firmer amount.

Dannel P. Malloy said after Wednesday’s meeting, the first of the year, that he would maintain the $2.7 billion cap he set last year.
