Field house added to referendum
SHORELINE SHARKS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPS After winning the state championship in early March, the Shoreline Sharks hockey team, whose roster features local players Carina Mancini and Claire Gavin, headed to Maine for the New England district regional playoffs. There, the Sharks compiled a record of 4-0-1, outscored their opponents 18-3, and prevailed in the championship game to advance to nationals. Representing New England, the Sharks traveled to Michigan in April and continued their incredible run.

On Tuesday, May 2, when residents of Durham and Middlefield vote on the proposed 2017-2018 school budget, they will also face a referendum on funding the long-delayed field house project at Coginchaug Regional High School. The second question at the polls will be to finance $800,000 for the design and construction of a building containing restrooms, a small referee’s room, and a small service closet. Other space within the proposed building will be empty because the Board of Education determined it is cheaper to use the larger foundation, already in place.

The Sharks went 6-0 at nationals, beating teams from Alaska, Michigan, Colorado, New Jersey, Massachusetts and, ultimately, Wisconsin, to claim the national championship.
The hunt was on for ‘gold’
That foundation, originally installed in 2010, was designed for a building with bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, and offices, but the district lacked the funds to complete that building when the athletic complex was built. The Board of Education’s Education Resources Committee recommended building the shell with some functional rooms and other space left empty to save money. The ERC proposed the project at $750,000, but the BOE increased it to $800,000 after determining that state law mandated market labor rates. According to BOE Chair Bob Moore, estimated construction cost is about $600,000 with an additional $100,000 for contingencies, and another $100,000 for design, bonding, and advisor fees. Several BOE members have noted that the district’s debt service payments are set to decrease in coming years. At a public hearing on the project on March 30, Roger Kleeman of Durham noted that with financing the cost would be higher. Kleeman said, “When you go See Vote, A6

IT’S ALL GOOD
In search of hygge By Diana Carr Town Times
I’m in search of hygge. My inspiration for this venture comes from a book I just finished reading: “The Little Book of Hygge; Danish Secrets to Happy Living.” It seems the Danes know a thing or two about living the good life. They are counted as among the happiest people in the world. Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga, in case you want to throw this word around at your next party) is all about savoring the simple everyday pleasures of life. The simpler
the better. Like curling up with a good book and a cup of tea on a cold, rainy day. Or sitting in front of a fire on a winter’s eve. In short, it’s about loving life and all its many marvels. I think I could do with a bit more hygge. Oh, I have my moments. When I wake up at 5 a.m., and it’s finally light at that hour, and the birds have formed a choir right outside my window, I experience hygge. I feel like all is right with the world. And I lie there for a few minutes, just soaking it all in.
my sitcoms. That never gets old for me. It’s with me when I am floating in my pool, or reading by my stream. And this is all well and good, but I think there are too many hygge-less spaces in my days. Every morning, after I take care of the kitties and drink my tea, I meditate for a few minutes, and I experience my fair share of bliss while doing so. I’m going to count my blessings all the livelong day. I’m going to savor every moment. Yeah, right! I’ve no sooner gotten up than my mind fills to the brim with mundane worries. I forget to savor.
And hygge is most certainly with me at the end of the day, sitting on the couch watching The thing is, I’m rarely present. Oh, my body is here, but my mind usually isn’t. It’s off and running like a wild stallion that dares anyone to try to capture it. But I want to be more like the Danes. I want joy to be my constant com-

panion, or at least a frequent visitor. I want more hygge. So I’m becoming more mindful of all the wonders, both large and small, that inhabit my days. I’m learning to corral my wild stallion of a mind, so that I can slow down and really see life. My beautiful tortoiseshell kitty, Dakota, snuggles with me on my bed in the morning, and I think, “This is hygge.” And at day’s end my other beloved feline, Shiloh, curls up in my lap while I’m perched in front of my Samsung. Hygge. I go for a walk, and now, instead of chewing on some problem or other, I notice my surroundings. I’m appreciating the small waterfall that rushes over the rocks, the beautiful shapes of the naked trees, the birds soaring overhead. These “eyes wide open” walks make me feel like I just woke up after a 100-year nap. This is hygge of the highest degree. A dear friend calls, and I hang up and think, “hygge.” My sons call, and when I get off the phone I say to myself, “That was some really big hygge.” Those boys of mine
are such blessings. I get a coveted parking spot, one that is easy to get in and out of, and I am hygge-ing all over the place. (If you have ever watched me trying to get in and out of small places, you would understand this.) My forsythia bushes are nearly in full bloom, and they are breathtakingly beautiful. Hygge. I notice the sky more often now, and the formations of the clouds. And like I did when I was a kid, I try to see shapes in them. Such fun, being 6 years old again. I am savoring (there’s that word again) my meals more now, rather than mindlessly scarfing them down. This, I have found, makes everything taste better. My friends, may your days be filled with hygge, too. The site plan was designed and approved with permanent bathrooms. Currently, the district uses port-a-potties for events at the athletic complex.
Depending on rates, financed for 10 years, the total cost would go above $900,000. Financed over 20 years, the cost would rise above $1,000,000. Most of the sentiment expressed by the public at that public hearing was supportive of the project, with parents of athletes and some athletes themselves speaking in favor of the new building. Dave Lowry, member of the Middlefield Board of Finance and a father of district athletes, said, “Let the people vote and I actually think it will go through. I think it makes sense and it’s something that’s going to have to be done sooner or later. So
Jennifer Keane, who works as a school psychologist at Memorial Middle School and is the parent of an athlete, said that the community has not followed through on the commitment to giving the students the athletic complex approved almost 10 years ago. Jen Zettergren of Durham said, “In addition to the kind and wonderful people who live here, our school system is our greatest asset ... This is an investment in our school system.” Several parents and one student referred to lights and the experience of playing

under the lights, reflecting some existing confusion on the project. The referendum vote is only about the field house and permanent bathrooms. The project does not include lights. According to an agreement following a lawsuit over the athletic complex, lights for night games can not be built until permanent bathrooms are installed. So while the field house project could be a pathway to field lights, it does not include lights. Some noted that a complete complex would create a better host site for tournaments and a better experience for student athletes. Several members of the public questioned if this was the best use of $800,000. Martin French of Durham noted that the BOE could present a long list of items $800,000 would get. “Our school system is great because we spend our money in a responsible, educational way,” said French. “As much as I’d like to go there some Friday night ... I don’t think this is the year, until we understand what they are going to do in Hartford.”
During the BOE’s meeting after the public hearing, member Bob Yamartino spoke for over 12 minutes in mostly prepared remarks. Yamartino said that this year’s budget season has been about priorities and the field house referendum is “a decision about where we as a community place our priorities and values. “To be very clear – the education of our children is among those things that I consider to be critical services. The field house decision for me falls into a quality of life decision with considerable financial implications.” Yamartino noted that the district and both towns have given strict consideration to similar or smaller expenses this year. “What would an additional $60,000 or $80,000 in STEAM funding ... look like for our students’ future?” Yamartino asked. “This is going to come at the cost of other things,” noted BOE member Victor Friedrich. The BOE members who ex-
pressed skepticism also said that voting to send the issue to referendum allowed the public to have their say. The BOE voted to send the question to referendum, with Jeremy Renninghoff of Middlefield and Phil Augur of Durham voting against. Some members of the public also expressed skepticism. Rick Parmelee of Durham pointed out that the school was looking into bringing in out-of-district students in order to field a complete football program. “We’ve got to put some balance in our lives and priorities and this is not a priority in my life,” Parmelee said. David Booth said as a coach he loved the idea of the field house, but thought that things like math interventionists and IT staff were more important. “When this item is on the budget and you can’t get rid of it, you’re going to be making more cuts.” Moore and other BOE members noted that the referendum was part of a process that would continue to be subject to bidding and review.
