IT’S ALL GOOD

Chill out, we’re doing fine If you were to listen to the news, you would think that the world is, as they say, going to hell in a hand basket. You may feel inclined to stay in bed all day with the covers pulled over your head. Or hide out under it. It feels like we are living in a very scary place, indeed. But take heart, my friends. All is not as it appears. A quick Internet search told me that, contrary to appear-

Renewable resources now produce 22 percent of the world’s electricity.

Combat deaths are at their lowest in 100 years. The average IQ scores have risen 24 points since 1914. U.S. tax rates are lower than nearly three-quarters of other countries in the world. Scientists may have found a way to slow down aging. They’ve identified a gene, and found a way to activate it, that could be used to stave

The ozone layer is making a recovery. The next few decades are expected to see it return to 1980 levels, the time before significant ozone level depletion. We Americans aren’t as disliked as we may think. Forty-five percent of people polled worldwide in 2013 had a positive view of us. We’re living longer. Studies show that as we get older, we get happier. Researchers have found that when older people are shown pictures of faces or situations, they remember the positive ones more than the negative ones. Other studies have discovered that as people age, they choose to

Obituary Patricia (Orr) Newton on how to use an electric stove. Once the children were born, Pat became what she proudly termed “a domestic engineer.” She had always wanted to go to college, so when the children were old enough, she went back to school. She received her bachelor of arts in special education from Southern Connecticut State College in 1981, and her master of arts in reading in 1987. She was employed for many years in Durham, Middlefield, and Middletown as a substitute teacher. Pat was a member of the United Churches of Durham, and was an avid gardener. She spent many summers tending to her flowers and vegetables. She also loved arts and

crafts, and enjoyed creating many things, from stepping stones to painted book bags. Pat will be remembered for the many crafts that she taught her children, along with passing along a love for gardening and raising many different flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed showing off her flower arrangements and other items at the fair, as well as selling flowers, vegetables, and crafts at the local farmers markets. She was always eager to help with plant selection and planting advice. She will also be remembered for the many places that the family went on field trips. “It’s a great way to showcase adoptable animals from municipal pounds,” Lamb said. “Homeward Bound is a wonderful organization.”

Homeward Bound volunteer Linda Hirsch brings Dory out to meet a visitor, Ivy Linden-Dionne, at Homeward Bound’s adoption event on the Durham Fairgrounds.

SERVICE DIRECTORY

The adoption weekend, simply called “Shelter Dog Adoption Event,” has taken place three times, every spring since the organization was founded in 2015. Homeward Bound has another large event, in October, on the Guilford Green and other, smaller events. According to Chris Lamb of Waterford, president and founder of CT Animal House, which supports animals in municipal shelters, the event helps give the dogs “the best chance at adoption.”

If they were not adopted from the Durham Fairgrounds, the Georgia dogs are not going back south, but to rescues and fosters in-state with no chance of returning to a kill shelter.

1283529

Dog crates were spread out around the Cow Palace and the dogs came in and out of their crates, sometimes with a bit of coaxing from volunteers and potential adopters. The dogs waiting for new families were a mixture of large and small, with many chihuahua mixes and lab mixes around. Some were eager to greet every new person and dog and others were more hesitant.

Hotkowski said, “There’s a lot of steps, a lot of meetings and a lot of talking and a lot of vetting that we do to make sure that it’s really the right home.”

Some of the dogs come from local shelters and rescues and many others come from Georgia. Homeward Bound volunteers take responsibility for the Georgia dogs since they do not come north with a local organization.

51971-01

President Sue Hotkowski, “What we do, and our main mission, is to help rescues and shelters find homes for dogs, so we supply a location, advise the rescues, we promote the dogs ... we take applications and pre-screen the applicants, we have the events, we open the doors and we have volunteers at the event.”

Each organization at the fairgrounds had a screening and application process and the adoption event also had a dog handler and trainer to talk to potential adopters.

CAPITOL VISIT Memorial Day parade at 9:15

From A15

“She’s very dedicated to veteran causes,” Saunders said.

The 2017 Durham Memorial Day parade is scheduled for Monday, May 29, rain or shine. The parade begins at 9:15 a.m. at the corner of Haddam Quarter Road and Main Street, continuing down Main Street to the Durham Town Green. A ceremony, honoring the nation’s servicemen and women, immediately follows the parade. For more information, to participate, or if anyone knows of a resident currently serving, contact Bob Francis at 610-295-3904 or rfranwp80@yahoo.com.

U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty will be attending the unveiling, as will state Rep. William Petit and state Sen. Henry Martin. Local Gold Star families are invited to the ceremony.

State Sen. Len Suzio and state lawmakers recently welcomed members of the Connecticut Wing Civil Air Patrol to the State Capitol’s historic Senate Chamber. The Civil Air Patrol is the all-volunteer official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The CAP performs search and rescue as well as emergency and disaster relief services. Suzio represents Cheshire, Meriden, Middlefield, Middletown and Rockfall. From left: Suzio, Lt. Colonel Darren Cioffi, state Sen. Heather Somers, state Sen. George S. Logan, and Col. Ken Chapman.
