The Durham co-op: History and memories
DISTRICT DARLINGS
By Mark Dionne Town Times
As declining enrollment and changing family needs have closed the Durham Cooperative Nursery School, two significant women in the co-op’s history, long-time director and teacher Lainy Melvin and original organizer Helen Pearce, remember a school that survived for decades by sticking to its original philosophy: preparing children for See Co-op, A6

Coginchaug softball reigns once again Three innings into Game 1 of the District 9, 10-12 year old softball finals and trailing Cromwell 3-0, Coginchaug needed some energy, a spark. What the locals got was a bolt – of lightening – then a downpour.
Coginchaug was back in it, trailing 3-2. Cromwell would get those two runs back in the fifth, on a pair of infield errors and three walks to surge ahead 5-2, and Coginchaug went down quietly in the bottom of the inning with a pair of strikeouts and a pop-out.
With 24 hours to recover, the Coginchaug girls returned to Atwell field in Durham and overwhelmed Cromwell 11-3 over the next two nights to sweep the best-of-3 series earlier this month. Coginchaug won by scores of 6-5 and 5-1 to claim its second straight district crown. These are the first back-toback softball titles for Coginchaug since 2002-2003 Jackie Kelly had three clutch RBIs in the sweep, Ava Marenna hit a two-RBI triple in Game 2, and Erin Donlan struck out 17 over her 12 innings on the mound. In Game 1, Cromwell’s starting pitcher Malena Signorello singled to lead off the top of the second and scored on a wild pitch to put her team ahead 1-0. In the third, Stephanie Esposito would walk, steal second and third, and came home on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game.
In the top of the fourth, Signorello would strike again, as she hit a liner to right centerfield that reached the wall. The throw in came slowly, and Signorello made it all the way around to put Cromwell ahead 3-0.
Cromwell would do likewise in the top of the sixth. Esposito was hit by a pitch, but was picked off by the catcher Marenna throwing down to first. That play was sandwiched between a pair of strikeouts.
Coginchaug went undefeated in District 9 play, outscoring its opponents 78-15.
lightning, the skies opened up with 45 minutes of hard rain, and the game was postponed until the next day. Coginchaug manager John Kelly demanded higher energy from his team, and his troops returned loud, confident and refocused.
From there, Grace Hughes-Conway would drive Marenna in on a fielder’s choice play, and suddenly

Donlan would strike out the side in the fourth, stranding a runner on second. Sam Mancini led off the bottom of the frame with a bunt single, and Donlan was hit by a pitch. Marenna then reached on an infield error, scoring Mancini, but Donlan was thrown out at home on the play.

school and life, and helping parents and children form lifelong bonds. “I had the best job in the world,” Melvin said. “I loved it. I loved meeting the parents and I loved being with the children and watching how they thought. It was fun.” Formed largely by a group of women in what was known as a homemakers’ association called the Nite Owls Homemakers, the Durham co-op opened in the fall of 1956 in the Harvey House, now called the Fairchild House, on the grounds of the United Church of Durham. At the time, the public schools did not have kindergarten. “We tried to convince the taxpayers it was a benefit but they didn’t go along with it so we decided to start our own,” Pearce said.

always closely tied to the community, with visits to the Greenbacker Farm and the Durham Fire House.
The Durham co-op has a long history, reaching back to when public schools did not even have kindergarten grades and most homes had only one working parent.
Durham co-op alums are numerous in town. The social ties, however, might be the strongest legacy of the Durham co-op, with both children and parents making friends there.
According to Pearce, some of the funds that helped the Durham co-op’s original founding in the 1950s came courtesy of a local athletic association that raised the money with a minstrel show. The memory of the school’s first teacher, Julia Bryant, is still strong with both Melvin and Pearce, who describe her as a notable character. Bryant loved music and taking the children on field trips to cider mills and hikes up mountains. Since Bryant was a notably bad driver, the school kept a list of students whose parents refused to allow their children to ride in Bryant’s Volkswagon bus.
“My son is going to be 64 and when he gets together with his buddies, they talk about kindergarten [at the co-op],” Pearce said. In this 1992 photo, children and their teachers climb on a playscape at the Durham Cooperative Nursery School. The playscape was purchased partially with funds from the Julia C. Bryant Memorial Music Fund, which supported the school. At the time of this photo, the co-op, founded in 1956, was on the grounds of the Church of the Epiphany in Durham. The school moved to its final location in Durham Village in 2000. The co-op closed last month. | Submitted photo

From its earliest days, the co-op adhered to a philosophy of play-based experience and heavy parental involvement. “A true co-op,” Pearce said. “And the fathers were very involved.” “It’s pretty much continued with the same philosophy,” Melvin said. “It gave them an opportunity to reach their full potential, which is what you’re looking for.” The Durham co-op was
In 2017, the co-op would have had to change substantially to survive, either by raising prices or no longer being a co-op. “I think it was definitely too difficult for parents to make that commitment,” Pearce said. “People have more money than they have time in some cases.” Even in strong years, with almost 60 families, it could be hard to run something like the Durham Fair chicken booth, which the co-op took over in the 1980s from the Fire Department Women’s Auxilary. With changing times and working households it became harder to convince parents to work in the co-op. Pearce and Melvin remember many area cooperative nursery schools that either closed or converted to day care in the 60 years of the Durham co-op. “We actually had a pretty good run,” Melvin said.

MIDDLEFIELD — Barbara Howie Tierney departed this life on Friday, June 30, 2017. She was born and raised in Middletown, to John and Madeline Howie on Sept. 18, 1930. Barbara had a very competitive and athletic spirit, which she initially displayed while serving as head cheerleader for Woodrow Wilson High School. Upon marrying her high school sweetheart, Gregory Tierney, the two moved to Middlefield, where they raised three daughters. She took great pride in being a homemaker, thankfully becoming an amazing cook. After 52 years in that community, they forged a new chapter in Center Tuftonboro, N.H. Thirteen years there were concluded by the death of her dear husband, prompting her to move back to Connecticut. Her love of college basketball keenly focused on UConn. Entertaining guests was a joy for her. People- watching and joke-telling were notable traits of hers to the very end. Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Gregory Tierney; as well as her brothers, Bill and Jack Howie.
She is survived by her daughters, Jane Tierney, of Middlefield, Linda Zona and her husband, Raymond, of Middlefield, and Pat Morrissey and her husband, Michael, of Clinton; her grandchildren, Dan and Sarah Morrissey, Melanie Muszynski, Meghan Breton, and Elizabeth Quinn grieve her loss along with great-grandchildren, Katie, Madeline, Jonah, Joseph, and Christopher. She is also survived by her sisters, Peggy Cotter, Pat (Ken) Cookson, and Katherine Howie; as well as sister-in- law, Mary Howie. This incredible woman will leave a void in the hearts of so many. Barbara’s health issues brought many wonderful and talented caregivers, neighbors, and friends into her life for whom her family is truly grateful. A Mass of Christian burial was held at Notre Dame Church, Main Street, Durham on Thursday, July 6, followed by burial in the Middlefield Cemetery. Biega Funeral Home has care of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Middlesex Hospital Home Care, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457. To share memories or express condolences online please visit www.biegafuneralhome.com.

IT’S ALL GOOD
Reunited, and it feels so good Finally, at long last, my pool and I are reunited again. It’s been a long time coming. Our annual “meet and greet” has been a bit late this year, and not to be overly dramatic, but it’s been absolute torture, this waiting. Oh, it was all just fine when spring was sitting back on her heels, in no hurry to make an appearance, but then it hit 90 degrees. I felt like my life was just one big sauna.

was too high as Case slid in with the winning run. In Game 2, held the following day, Coginchaug kept the pressure on Cromwell. In the top of the second, Case led off with the first hit of the game, and stole second, but was thrown out trying to take third. Emma Ufferfilge then lined out to short, and with two outs, Tatum Hultgren reached on a throwing error. Allison Strang hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped, and with two on and two out, Natalie Ness singled in Hultgren, Donlan reached on another error scoring Strang, and Marenna drove both Ness and Donlan in with a bases-clearing triple to make it 4-0. Kelly would single in Marenna to put Coginchaug up 5-0. Tessmer opened the Cromwell first with a double, but was thrown out – Marenna to Donlan – attempting to steal home on a wild pitch. Cromwell put runners on third again in the second inning, but did not score. Donlan retired the next six Cromwell batters in order, and entering the bottom of the fifth, the score remained 5-0.

With one away in the fifth, Esposito reached on an infield error, and Tessmer walked. Jamie Anderson then bunted to load the bases. Kiyah Skeene hit a fly ball that was high and fairly deep right down the first base line. Strang caught it on the run for the out, and her throw in to Donlan was quick enough to hold Esposito at third base. Esposito would score on a walk to Signorello, but four runs back would be as close as Cromwell would get. – Submitted by Scott Strang

as I often do, about the days of yore when my bambinos were here. We had a pool then, too, and every day found the three of us in it for hours. We would line up single file and hug the walls, running as fast as we could, until we created a whirlpool of water so humongous it threatened to swallow us whole. We never tired of this. I don’t remember us ever lazily floating around, just running and stirring up the water. That pool, which my dear neighbors gave us, and which was comprised of sheets of metal, gave us years of joy, until one day I looked out the back window and saw that it had collapsed into a heap.
