Lyman Orchards’ sunflower maze opens for season By Sierra DePalma Special to the Record-Journal

People from throughout the region began the annual late-summer trek to wander through the maze of more than 350,000 sunflowers blooming at Lyman Orchards — and perhaps even get a little lost in the process. Thursday, Aug. 3 marked the opening for the maze this year. By noon Lyman Orchard teemed with excitement. Despite the hot weather, everyone remained in bright spirits, eager to find their own way through the

maze. A dollar from each ticket sold goes to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. In the past decade, Lyman Orchards raised about $79,000 for this cause. The theme of the two-mile trail truly made a splash with guests, from above the maze forms characters Splash and Bubbles from the popular PBS show. Among the yellow and red variations of flowers, children and adults alike find fun facts and trivia, creating

Millers Pond drowning latest fatality at park On Saturday, July 30, Ramiro Bonilla, a 33-year-old from Queens, New York swimming with his family at Millers Pond struggled in the water and drowned.

Revolutionary War reenactment A camp follower will discuss medicines of the era and the soldiers will engage visitors in discussions about the war. The “Kiddie Drill” will allow youngsters to learn the manual of arms using wooden muskets.

Modern-day re-enactors portray soldiers and camp followers and will demonstrate musket firing and the manual of arms as written by Baron von Steuben.

Professor Richard Buel plans to discuss both Middletown’s contribution to the revolutionary movement and the way the town was changed by its ex-

perience at 11 a.m. Buel taught American History at Wesleyan University for 40 years.

IT’S ALL GOOD

Relish the time with your little ones drawn the long straws. Pea green is not a good color on me.

By Diana Carr Town Times

My Swedish grandson, Hayden, will turn 7 on Aug. 18. Now in years gone by I would have felt very sorry for myself because I won’t be there. I would have, once again, felt like I had drawn the short straw, grandma-wise. I would have, once again, been pea-green with envy of my friends who are able to attend their grandchildren’s birthday parties. They had obviously

spoiling him, in every way conceivable.

Dare I say it? It’s possible that I’m evolving. The angst is gone, and while I wasn’t looking, it seems. I have spent so much time ranting and railing against my fate. Wishing that I could pick up that little tyke from school and take him out for ice cream. Have him over for a sleepover, where we would watch all his favorite shows and play all his favorite games and eat all his favorite food. Basically just

But not anymore. It’s exhausting living like that. It’s only a half-life, really. Always living in the land of “what I don’t have.” So I decided to live in the land of “all that I do have.” And I have a lot. For one thing, I am so lucky to have those boys of mine, and Hayden. Though I miss them all, and wish they

lived next door, I have more and more days when I am grateful that they are simply on the planet, and that I am able to call them my own. I’ve stopped fighting a battle that can’t be won. It feels so much better. My son, Ryan, tells me all about my angel boy, and I relish the stories, most of which are funny. Hayden is very smart (that’s not just “grandma talk;” he really is), and comes out with the darndest things.

Local Boy Scouts attend national jamboree By Andrew Foster

differences between the jamboree and a regular summer camp is that at normal summer camps you do not have the opportunity to have activities such as welding, scuba diving, and hunting taught by professionals.

Between July 18 and 28, four boys from Boy Scout Troop 27 in Durham attended the National Scout Jamboree, located at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. They went along with 37,000 other Boy Scouts from all 50 U.S. states.

One of the big activities at the jamboree was patch trading. Each council had its own patch set. Some people even took their cots from their tents and displayed their patches on the cots all day long.

The four local scouts were Joe Venables, Christopher Sokol, William Foster and myself. The boys were part of a new troop of 36 from the Connecticut Rivers Council created just for the jamboree. The jamboree is like Boy Scout Camp on steroids. There were six subcamps at the summit and each of them had about as many people as Durham has, but the subcamp is a lot smaller in area. Each subcamp had a food tent, a headquarters and a lot of bathroom buildings. The scouts were responsible for putting up everything, including tents and a dining

area, and for cooking all their meals. One thing that makes the jamboree special is the activities. There were three giant zip lines that, combined, stretched more than a mile. There were lots of organiza-

tions, such as local groups, national businesses, and religious representatives giving scouts information and items to bring home. On three of the evenings there were shows that had bands playing and even a

visit from the President of the United States (you might have heard something about that one). The jamboree also offered lots of unusual merit badges including welding and mining in society. One of the

The set for Connecticut was themed after submarines because of the state’s long history with them. Some of the most wanted patch sets were one featuring Doctor Who from a troop from New York and another that showed Monty Python from a troop in Colorado. I feel lucky that I will still be under 18 – young enough to attend the jamboree as a scout – in four years when the event is held again.

Free, reduced price school meals guidelines Local school officials have adopted the United States Department of Agriculture’s Income Eligibility Guidelines for family size and income criteria for determining free or reduced-price meals eligibility. The income calculations are made based on the following formulas: Monthly income is calculated by dividing the annual income by 12; twice monthly income is com-

puted by dividing annual income by 24; income received every two weeks is calculated by dividing annual income by 26; and weekly income is computed by dividing annual income by 52. All numbers are rounded upward to the next whole dollar. Children from families whose income is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. The application form

and instructions are available on the Regional District 13 website: www.rsd13ct.org, in the School Lunch Information Section.
