Community roundup aids social services By Lauren Takores Town Times

The annual community roundup fundraiser and food drive raised well over $3,000 for the social services departments of both Durham and Middlefield, organizers said. On Dec. 2, teams made up of students, teachers, parents and community members traveled on assigned routes in Durham and Middlefield collecting food and monetary donations to be distributed to the needy. The donations were sorted at CRHS. Each town received more than $1,600 in cash and gift cards along with some food, school social worker

Fate of water utility mulled By Lauren Takores Town Times

The fate of a small water utility rests in the hands of the state. Rainbow Springs Water System serves eight properties on Lakeview Place in Middlefield, a neighborhood of mid-century bungalows along Lake Beseck. The privately owned water company, REJA Acquisition Corp., made a request in October 2014 to the state Department of Public Health and the Public Utility Regulatory Authority to cease operations and abandon its Rainbow Springs water system. Since then, the departments have held several joint hearings to determine which public or private entities could take ownership, and any associated costs, to ensure adequate water supply at a reasonable cost to residents.

At right, Strong Middle School students collect donations during the annual community roundup.

‘Future is bright’ for Coginchaug Hale-Ray By Eric Becker

Albin, Zach Hart, Justin Gagner, Kenny Trawicki, captain David Skelps, Tanner Jameson, Terry Lockwood, Trevor Smith and Bobby Husher.

On a crisp, clear Thanksgiving eve, the Coginchaug Hale-Ray football team traveled to historic Colafati Field in North Branford to face off against the Thunderbirds of North Branford.

In the end, Coginchaug Hale-Ray prevailed, 28-27.

After trading scores in the second quarter, the game was deadlocked at halftime, as well.

The Thunderbirds came out fired up and scored two quick ones to take a 14-0

The matchup had the feel of a prize fight, with back-andforth lead changes and dramatic momentum swings.

With the game on the line, quarterback Eli Rivera found captain Anthony Curry in the end zone for the goahead touchdown. An interception by Anthony Curry with under a minute to go solidified the victory.

Letter to the Editor Stand up for a healthy, vibrant Durham To the editor: As many of you are aware, carcinogenic contamination was found in soil and drinking wells in the area around Main Street Durham in the early 1980s. With the help of the EPA and CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, much of the soil contamination has now been remediated. But the water is another matter.

To this day, approximately 70 wells are regularly monitored for contamination. Of the wells monitored, 40 use carbon filters to make the water drinkable, and 10 others are so polluted that even after the water is charcoalfiltered, residents are advised to only drink bottled water. The EPA has determined that it could take hundreds of years for the pollution to dissipate and has found that in the last 13 years alone the number of effected wells has increased by

30 percent as the pollution has spread. The EPA has recommended, and will pay for, a public water extension from Middletown into Durham. They believe that a public water supply is the only viable way to provide safe drinking water to all resid e nt s.

Seniors win Coginchaug powder puff tilt By Lauren Takores Town Times

The seniors won Coginchaug Regional High School’s powder puff game on Thursday, Nov. 30, a comeback from last year’s defeat as juniors. The final score was 28-26. The annual girls flag football game pits a team of seniors against a team of juniors. Senior team coach Kevin Cross said the seniors lost last year as juniors in a “very close game.”

point conversion, and running back Julia Filliault had one TD for the victors. Junior quarterback Juliana DeFilio scored three touchdowns, and running backs Shannon Carey and Alison Durand each tallied one. Cross said the juniors came out of halftime with a trick play, with DeFilio running 70 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 12. “The senior defense made an impressive stop at their own 30-yard line with one minute to go in the game to seal the deal for the seniors,” Cross said.

the Rainbow Springs system.

The most recent hearing was Sept. 22. The departments continued the hearing to a later, unspecified date to give the Town of Middlefield, REJA and residents time to pursue a plan to drill individual wells.

It's just too small to be profitable, said First Selectman Ed Bailey, and the town especially does not want to set water rates or be financially responsible for upgrading the old system.

Neither the town nor other water utilities, including Aquarion Water Company and Connecticut Water Company, want to take over

The seven property owners on Lakeview Place sent a letter to DPH in February 2016 saying they want to drill individual wells and disconnect from the current com-

munity well, which is in the backyard of the oldest house on the street. Bailey said the reason this plan hasn't gone through yet is red tape from underground pipe regulations. New wells wouldn’t meet setback requirements, and, according to a joint statement from DPH and PURA issued Dec. 5, the Public Health Code does not provide for any kind of waiver

regarding separation distance requirements between a proposed new well and existing underground sewer or septic pipes. Both departments will issue a decision in this case, but there’s no rush and no upcoming state hearings scheduled. If the DPH and PURA determine that Rainbow Springs should be acquired, “the departments will order the

most suitable public or private entity to acquire the system, which may or may not be the town of Middlefield,” the joint statement said. REJA continues to operate the community well, but it’s unknown why REJA wants to relinquish water rights to Rainbow Springs. REJA owners John Wittenzellner and Bob Wittenzellner, who are brothers, have moved out of state and have been divesting of all water systems in Connecticut and Massachusetts, according to Bailey. REJA’s business phone number has been disconnected. Other calls to numbers associated with the Wittenzellners have not been returned.

If the town operated Rainbow Springs, residents would see a significant increase in their monthly bills, and the town would have to make expensive infrastructure upgrades, Bailey said. Water bills average about $65 per month currently. Under the town, their rates would “easily double, possibly triple,” Bailey said, to hundreds of dollars a month. Capital improvements to the 60-year-old system could cost the town $300,000 to $350,000, he said. “The wells are in the best interest of residents,” he said. “Around the lake, the water is good, safe and sanitary. The ground is good for drilling wells.” See Water, A15

IT’S ALL GOOD

It’s just not fair(y) By Diana Carr Special to Town Times

Dear Tooth Fairy, It may have come to your attention that I recently wrote a letter to Santa. I don’t know whether or not you guys hang out, but just in case you do, and just in case he blabbed, I shall now take a moment to write to you. I don’t want you to feel left out. Especially since, though I certainly hope not, I may need you again someday. Actually, I’ve been thinking about you lately, dear lady. I substitute at our elementary school, and the kids are al-

You were not nearly so generous with me. You left a dime. A dime! And these young’uns are telling me about five dollar bills. Five dollars! Someone got 10 dollars. Talk about a cost of living raise! I know life is more expensive these days, but this huge gap does seem to be a bit uncalled for. And perhaps a little unforgivable. Not that I would ever carry a grudge. I really hated it when I had loose teeth. Even with the promise of a dime! (Ha! Ha!) I was always afraid they would fall out into my bowl of cereal or my supper, and I would choke on them. Not a pretty picture, I must say. So in order to head off this ordeal, I would wiggle and

wiggle the tooth with which I would soon be parting ways, while I was watching my cartoons. It took a considerable amount of time, as I was very careful to avoid any kind of pain during this venture. Just a tiny wiggle, wiggle, no hard tugs. It seemed to take forever. But I figured the effort was worth not finding the darn thing in my Frosted Flakes. My younger son used to try to yank his loose teeth out, but for a different reason. He was not concerned with them finding their way into his cereal. Oh no, he wanted the dollar that you always gave him, and he wanted it now.

door, and I did not enjoy the experience.

So here’s where we stand. I have not had need of your services for quite some time, and I hope I never do. I fervently hope that all my choppers remain right where they are, ‘til death do us part.

Ms. Fairy, I think you definitely should have left more than a dime on that occasion, knowing what I had gone through in order to give you that tooth. Which begs the question, what do you do with all these teeth? I can’t imagine they could be fashioned into any kind of pretty jewelry. I, for one, would not take kindly to a necklace made of teeth. It does seem like an odd hobby. I’m just saying.

But I’m at the other end of the spectrum now, and if per chance one decides to go rogue and no longer wants to remain with me, I will put it under my pillow, and this time, my dear Tooth Fairy, I am looking for a sight more than a dime. I am looking for a big wad of cash. You know, what with the cost of living increase and all.

I never caught you slipping the moolah, such as it was, under my pillow. You were as quiet as Santa always was. Truth be told, I believe you had the advantage. You’ve got those wings, so your feet didn’t even need to touch the ground, while the big fella had to clomp around in

Diana Carr, a resident of I remember one horrendous Durham, is the author of time when a string was tied “Life As I See It: Musings to my loose tooth, with the About Everyday Life.” This other end tied to the doorcollection of her columns can knob of the front door. I remember standing there Quilts that Care seeking fabric donations in stark terror of someone flinging open that door. Firetruck Pull coming in June

PET OF THE WEEK Andie, 1, is an affectionate boy who is still becoming more confident in himself and in people. He was rescued off the streets and brought to a vet who over-vaccinated him, making him very sick. He is very resilient and feeling better now. He is FIV+, meaning his immune system isn't strong, but if fed a high quality diet and brought to regular vet appointments, his life expectancy can be the same as any other cat. He likes giving hugs, sitting on your lap and being petted. Andie is looking for a loving home where he can continue to heal and grow into a confident cat. For more information or to meet Andie, call 860-344-9043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit www.CatTalesCT.org/cats/ANDIE

The American Cancer Society’s Fire Truck Pull at the Relay for Life of HK is scheduled for Saturday, June 23 at Haddam-Killingworth High School.

An informational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 31, 6:30 p.m., at the Haddam Volunteer Firehouse Company 1, 439 Saybrook Road, Higganum.

The event consists of teams where 12 people compete to pull the truck a designated distance in the fastest time.

For more information, call Alexis Maliga at 203-3794827 or email Alexis.Maliga@cancer.org or visit www.relayforlife.org/hkct.

Teams raise money however they wish. The minimum amount that a team must raise is $1,200 (or $100) per person to participate. All funds benefit the American Cancer Society.
