Durham water plan advances
Snow tubing at Powder Ridge By Pete Paguaga Record-Journal staff
Tucked away to the side of the ski trails at Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort, hides a six lane snow tubing area.
By Lauren Takores Town Times
“A lot of people say we have one of the fastest and smoothest courses, the kids love it,” said Nick Cugno, snow tube operator. “At first you go down a little slow and then you hit a bump and you get that pit in your stomach and then you just fly, it’s a great feeling.”
The Durham-Middletown water purchase agreement received its final needed approval Monday from the Durham Board of Selectmen.
The snow tube park is open from Wednesday to Sunday throughout the winter. “We test these lanes a lot and now five years in we have a really good idea on how to run it safe,” said Tom Loring, training center director. “The mats are out here to slow it down, we switch it Garetson Curtis, 12, of New Haven runs towards the conveyor belt after going up with hard shell bottoms and soft down the tubing slopes with his friend David Carroll, 12, of Branford. shell bottoms to make sure no one’s Richie Rathsack, Record-Journal going all the way up the return wall.” The course is open to all ages. “There’s no skill required you just have to stay on the tube,” Loring said. “The (only) real requirement is they have to ride alone, we don’t allow two people to ride in the tube. They have to be able to hold on to the tube.” Powder Ridge is shaking up its Friday night snow tubing experience with “Interstellar Friday.” The lanes and
tubes will be laced with lights. “Colored lights in the tubing area,” Loring said. “We’re going to pump up the music to make it a little bit more interesting and a little more fun.” ppaguaga@record-journal.com 203-317-2235 Twitter: @PetePaguaga

Two more members have been appointed to a joint finance committee of Regional School District 13 and its two towns.
Middlefield’s members, recommended by First Selectman Ed Bailey and approved by town meeting on Monday, are Jim Irish and Marie Benedetto.
Durham’s and Middlefield’s selectmen requested in December that the school board form a finance committee to address the impact of the state budget. The committee will have eight members; four from the school

The conversation will move from planning and design to bidding and construction, First Selectman Laura Francis said. A communication plan is slated to be announced next month, after the water project team meets. A new water main will bring clean water from Middletown to properties in the Durham Meadows Superfund site, plus homes that represent a buffer in an area where the contamination plume would most likely migrate. The plan is to install a water tank in Middletown on Cherry Hill, near Talcott Ridge Road. The water main will run down Route 17 into downtown Durham and connect to the existing water main at the Durham center booster station. The Environmental Protection Agency will fund 90 percent of the project and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will cover the rest as required by the state Superfund contract. Edward Hathaway, of the EPA New England Region and project manager for Durham Meadows Superfund site, said the EPA expects to go out to bid on See Water, A2

of contamination in the soil at the former Merriam Manufacturing Company in 2012, and has completed a design to remove contaminated soil from the Durham Manufacturing Company property, Hathaway said Tuesday. Removal of the contaminated soil will limit the contamination that is continuing to leach into the bedrock groundwater aquifer. Since the contamination plume is moving toward the Durham fairground wells, Hathaway said the plan is to take the Durham fairground wells offline and connect the fairground to the new water main.

“Monitoring wells will be installed to keep track of the extent of groundwater contamination,” he said. Francis said the fairground wells system was designed and built to be able to connect to a new system, if and when it became contaminated. While designing the new water system, two new houses were tested for contamination, which provided proof the plume is moving. “The movement convinced us we should disconnect (the fairground wells) sooner rather than later,” Francis said.

Great to see you again (I think) I used to think it was a matter of Father Time having some fun at my expense, but really, I have always been like this. Things fly in and out of my head with breathtaking speed – especially out. Like names. Especially names.
I remember a day, back in medieval times, when I was home for the summer after my first year at UConn. I was in downtown Madison, and at the other end of town (you could stand on one end of town and sneeze, and someone on the other end of town would say, “Bless you”)

and I saw someone that I actually knew well. I had spent a lot of time at her house, and we had even figured out that we were distant cousins. But do you think I could remember her name? No, I could not. I avoided the meeting by slipping away in another direction, in order to escape extreme embarrassment.
at the tender age of 19, those neural pathways in the ol’ noggin weren’t always lit up.
So when people’s names have a very short shelf life in my head, I comfort myself by remembering (at least I can still do that!) that even

Years ago I supervised the Corn Maze at Lyman Orchards, and I had a lot of names to learn. Some of them I should have remembered, like the volunteers who showed up on a regular basis. But no, those names did not often roost in my head. And again, I was too embarrassed to ask, so I would call everyone, “my friend.” I figured that would get me out of the hot seat. But one man was on to me. “You don’t remember my name, do you?” he asked. No, I did not. I guess it wasn’t as clever a ruse as I had thought. Obituaries John Henry Stahl, Sr.
James T. Burtt, Jr. DURHAM — James T. Burtt Jr., 58, of Durham, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb.y 6, after a very brief illness. Jim is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 30 years, Lisa (Newell); his beloved daughter, Kristen; mother, Annie; sister, Lori Thody and her husband, Ron; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his father, James Burtt Sr. Jim was born and raised in Durham, attending the local schools and graduating from Coginchaug Regional High School. Jim started working for his father’s roofing business when he was just a young teenager, running bundles of shingles up the ladder. The business eventually expanded to home improvement and he continued to learn from his dad and in time make that his career. Jim also had a passion for fixing cars and worked for a period of time in the automotive business as a mechanic as well as auto body paint and repair. He was truly known as a guy who could fix or build anything. Jim loved the outdoors including fishing and boat-
ing with Uncle David, snowmobiling with friends, hunting, or watching his favorite stock car racingwith his buddy Keith. In recent years, Jim became very fond of his Rhode Island beach house, hosting many weekend gatherings with close friends and family. Jim’s proudest accomplishment was his daughter, Kristen, whom he dubbed his trophy. He was her fiercest protector always concerned that she was okay. Together they spent countless hours playing board games over the years never letting her win unless she did on her own. One of the biggest joys in his life was watching her become the incredible young woman that she is today. At Jim’s request there will be no funeral or wake as he preferred everyone to gather together in a celebration reminiscing on the good times, while enjoying great food and festivities. To honor his wishes, there will be a party for the celebration of his life in the upcoming weeks. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jim’s honor to the Durham Volunteer Fire Department, as he was a volunteer there for a number of years and would be pleased to support their needs.
DURHAM — On the morning of Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, a great voice and booming laugh was silenced and will be missed. John Henry “Jack” Stahl, Sr., age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife, Margery Spann Stahl, and his devoted caregivers. Born in Pennsylvania on Sept. 8, 1930, Jack graduated from West Chester State University, where he was a scholar athlete in football and wrestling. A 50-plus year resident of Durham, CT, Jack was a high school biology teacher at Staples High School in Westport, and active town participant and volunteer. Known throughout the community for his big laugh and even bigger personality, Jack served as a Boy Scout pack leader, was involved in community service as a former tax assessor and recreation director, as well as the local Exchange Club. He organized local skiing trips to Europe, including the 1976 Olympics in Austria, and had the opportunity to travel worldwide, including Alaska, Costa Rica, Africa and Russia, and across the United States. Jack was an avid gardener and loved his roses (though perhaps the Japanese beetles not so much). He was known for his floral designs and wreath-making, poor golf game, frequent trips to local establishments for cof-
fee and conversation, and scaring legions of unsuspecting trick-or-treaters with his haunted house each Halloween. Family was deeply important to Jack, and he always expressed great pride in his six children, 15 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marge; Jack Stahl, Jr. and his wife, Linda, of West Hartford, Susan Stahl Gillespie and her husband, Bill, of Durham, Sandra Stahl DeFrancesco and her husband, John, of Windsor, Linda Stahl Tribble, of West Hartford; Bill Stahl and his wife, Judith, of West Hartford and Margery Stahl, of Durham; as well as his three brothers, Raymond Stahl, Robert Stahl and Louis Stahl of Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by his beloved Australian Shepherd, Cindy Lou. Burial will be private. There will be no calling hours. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at noon on Saturday, March 3, at the United Churches of Durham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Churches of Durham, 228 Main St., Durham, CT 06422 or to the charity of the donor’s choice. To share memories or send condolences to the family, please visit www.doolittlefuneralservice.com.
Community Trivia Bee is all the buzz in town Can you name five countries on the mainland of Africa whose names begin with "M"? On what date, according to the Mayan calendar, was the world slated to end? Or, how many Oscars has Meryl Streep won? The Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation has scheduled its Community Trivia Bee for Friday, March 2, 7 p.m., at Strong school, 191 Main St., Durham. A fee is charged. Is your brain a repository of trivia about arts and entertainment, sports, local Durham and Middlefield history, current events, science, geography and literature? If so, it's time to sign up a team. Organize a trivia team of up to five members. Give it a name, decide on costumes. This is a bee, there is no elimination during a round. Register online at www.coginchaugvef.org or download the team entry form. For more information, email coginchaugvef@gmail.com.
