Coginchaug girls to play for state championship The Coginchaug girls basketball team is back in the CIAC Class S state finals. The No. 9 seed, Coginchaug edged No. 20 Weaver 67-62 Monday night to earn a spot in the Class S title game.
The Blue Devils will face No. 10 SMSA Saturday, March 17 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Game time is 10 a.m. Fans flock to Uncasville for the title tilts. Last year’s finals drew more than 18,000 spectators, and the New London-
Trumbull girls Class LL championship game pulled in a crowd of 8,186; a record for girls high school basketball in our state. (New London prevailed in a close one, 42-36). Coginchaug has been on the big stage before. The Blue
Devils claimed the Class S state title in 2012. This time around, Coginchaug bested No. 24 Tourtellotte, 66-30, in the opening round of the Class S tournament, and No. 8 Bolton, 5630, in Round 2.
That propelled the Blue Devils into the quarterfinals, where they took down No. 17 Wamogo, 64-28, to set up their Final Four matchup with Weaver, — Town Times report
Library scavenger hunt has local flair By Diana Carr Special to Town Times
Who doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? They seem to appeal to people of all ages. And throughout March children can drop in at the children’s room of the Durham Public Library and participate in one featuring pictures of items that are mentioned in local author Leslie Bulion’s book, “Leaf Litter Critters.” Gina Monti, the youth services librarian, said, “The scavenger hunt is available for people to do when they come in. It’s mostly for children, but adults can do it, too. They pick up a sheet that tells them what to look for, then they turn it in at the front desk in order to receive a prize. “For the whole month of January we had an emoji one. It was difficult for the kids to find them, but they liked the hunt a lot. We moved the emojis around so that they were not always in the same place.” Monti said the library hosts scavenger hunts frequently, usually when kids are out of school. “Our scavenger hunts are very popular because they’re the first thing you see when you come into the children’s room, where the sheets are. The items could be anywhere – on the walls, on the sides of book stacks, near the desk. You have to take a look around.” Children’s librarian Alexandra Klaus said the scavenger hunts have been going on since 2016, and usually tie into a theme, like Harry Potter, St. Patrick’s Day, Lego’s, inventors, or construction tools. “Everyone is very happy with them. We get hundreds of completed sheets. It’s a great passive activity for families to do to kill time in the library,” Klaus said. “The kids have been very excited about this one. They’ve been asking about it since the flyers went up in February.” The scavenger hunt is for all ages. Klaus said the youngest hunter she has seen was 2 and the oldest 14. See Hunt, A10

Dems have candidate for 13th District By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — City Democrats are supporting a retired educator and school administrator to run for the 13th Senate District. Mary Daughtery Abrams filed paperwork to run after Susan Bysiewicz dropped out to run for governor. She is the wife of James Abrams, who represented the 83 House District from 1994 to 2005, when he left office and became a Superior Court judge. The 59-year old former teacher and assistant principal has been around politics all her life. Her father was active in the party and once ran unsuccessfully for office. She was also involved in her husband’s races and legislative career, and understands the demands of campaigning and serving. “I grew up in the area,”
Abrams said. “I really care about it. It is the core of Connecticut, an entirely diverse community. I want to help find ways to make progress by getting people together.” She has the support of the city’s Democratic Town Committee and has met with party leaders in Middletown, Middlefield, and Cheshire. “They have been encouraging me to run,” she said. “Everyone is very excited about the possibility.” The 13th district seat is currently held by state Sen. Len Suzio, a city Republican. Suzio has said he will not discuss the campaign until the current legislative session is over. “I am very familiar with Mr. Suzio,” Abrams said. “I think it will become very clear where we disagree. I think I can do a much better job.”
Mary Daugherty Abrams, front row, listens at a meeting of the Meriden Democratic Town Committee. Abrams has entered the race for the 13th district state senate.
Abrams was also motivated to run after the 2016 national elections and joins a record number of women looking to enter politics this year. Women currently make up slightly less than 30 percent of the state legislature, despite accounting for just over half of the state’s population. “I’m very strong on women’s issues, but I don’t see them as a divide,” she said. “I would love to see more

tough race for any Democrat, he’s a formidable opponent.”
Abrams could have a challenger for the nomination, though, as new resident Alex Tiktinsky is also considering a run for office. He said he would enter the race if he doesn’t think Abrams is capable of beating Suzio.
The district leans Democratic, and went for both Gov. Dannel Malloy, who won reelection over Republican Tom Foley in 2014 and Hillary Clinton, who lost to Republican Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. Suzio lost tight races in 2012 and 2014 and won by

sex. I was assured wrong! Suffice it to say that I was in the bunny business for quite some time. A few made a break for it and hightailed it into the woods. I like to think that they are now your cohorts and help you distribute the wide selection of eggs for which you are responsible. Anyhooooo, I always thought it would have been a magnificent thing if we could have met in person/ bunny. We could have snuggled on the couch. I would have been very sensitive and not worn my bunny slippers. You could have snacked on carrots. I would have been chowing down on the chocolate. We could have done the Bunny Hop together. (That was really a dance back in the day. I believe
My dear bunny, you were always so good to me. I would wake up on Easter morning to find a basket full to the brim with all sorts of delectable goodies for my snacking pleasure. Peeps and gummies and those big chocolate Easter bunnies. Then, after my squeals of delight had finally died down, I raced off to the yard to find the eggs you had so carefully hidden. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved looking for those eggs. They weren’t as much fun to eat, though, as the contents of that basket. After a couple of weeks of eating hard-boiled eggs (for what seemed like morning, noon, and night), I thought I would never be able to look at another egg again. Well, Mr. Bunny, I have apparently passed the cut-off point for receiving baskets of goodies and for eggs being hidden. (Although in fairness, the egg thing is on me.

I’m a vegan now, so there are no eggs here looking for hiding places. I don’t think I’m too old for the chocolate, though.) But I would like to repay the kindness that you showed me all those years. I will offer you the same deal that I offer Santa. If, on Easter Eve, you are feeling a bit pooped from lugging around all those baskets and hiding all those eggs, please feel free to stop at my house for a brief respite from your duties. You’ll have to knock/thump on my front door, as I don’t have a bunny door. (There are doggie doors, but I’ve yet to hear of a bunny door.) I’ll keep an eye out for you. We will hug first, of course, because it will be so wonderful to finally meet my old childhood chum. I’ll make you a nice cup of tea (with caffeine, not herbal) so that you can keep those peepers of yours open for the duration of your busy night. We’ll find something good on TV (I was thinking Animal Planet, but maybe not. Some of your predators could be featured, and I do not wish to give you the heebie jeebies) and I will share my love seat with you, and we can prop up our feet/paws and you can snack on veggies. If there’s time we can finally get to that Bunny Hop. With your four feet I am thinking that we will move through it pretty quickly. I go to bed pretty early, so the sooner you can swing by, the better. ‘Til then, I would just like to say, thanks for the memories. They’re good ones. Always a fan, Diana

night of good cheer, fun, and a plethora of brain teasers.
The teams came up with their own names, and dressed in costumes of their choosing, which usually were in keeping with their moniker. Also, they picked a theme song that a DJ played as they made their entrance, and they came up with a fun fact about themselves, which was read to the audience by Veronesi.
Four or five teams comprised a “swarm,” for a total of four swarms (and 17 teams, made up of Coginchaug students, businesspeople, school faculty members and Independent Day School students). The teams in each swarm competed against each other, with the winning team moving on to the championship round. Questions, which were put together by a committee, were read by the superintendent of Regional School District 13, Kathyryn Veronesi. There was a scorekeeper, as well as three judges – Ed Bailey, the first selectman of Middlefield; Laura Francis, the first selectman of Durham; and Judge Joseph Marino, who sat front and center in the audience, donned in black robe and

In-between swarms coming out, Veronesi asked the audience trivia questions, and candy was given to those who got the correct answers. Spirits were high, both before and during the event.
The teams had 30 seconds to Cal Pitruzzello, a Coginanswer a question, which they wrote on a whiteboard, chaug senior and a member of The Fumblebees, said, and held up. “We were e-mailed some of the categories, and we studUltimately, the 221 Bees, a ied a little as a group.
