The Regional School District 13 Board of Education plans to close John Lyman School, citing fewer students, less state aid, and an outdated facility The school board voted Monday to approve a plan that would close Lyman and move the district toward a four-school configuration: an elementary school for kindergarten through second grade, another elementary school for third to fifth grade, and a middle school and high school. Lyman, a K-4 elementary school, houses the Integrated Day program and maintains a Higher Order Thinking designation. The ID program mixes classrooms, combining the first and second and the third and fourth grades. Lyman PTA member Jenna Driscoll, who has one child at John Lyman currently and others in the district, said Tuesday the decision was “shocking.” She said she felt the school board rushed into a vote Monday without enough community input. Although the board floated the idea of a mailed survey presenting the options available, the idea didn’t make it out of the discussion phase. “It seems like they leaped over that crucial step,”

Ice cream shop opens for the season After a long winter, the Durham Dari Serv has reopened. The ice cream parlor, located at 13 Main St., serves both hard and soft serve ice cream and will now be open daily from noon to 9 p.m. until Columbus Day weekend. Once school lets out for the summer, hours will be extended. “We’re very excited,” Dari Serv assistant manager Tessa Thomas said. “It’s always a great time of year. It’s spring now so everybody is itching for us to open back up.” To prepare for the reopening, workers and managers
have been coming in for the past few weeks to get the shop “cleaned up and ready to go,” according to Thomas. With the excitement comes changes. In 2018, Dari Serv will be introducing new specialty flavors. Thomas says the parlor will have five to six “specials” per day, including cinnamon cookie, toasted coconut and peanut butter brownie. Many customers, including Thomas Kannam and his son of the same name, have been eager for the opening. “We’re ‘frequent flyers’ here (at Dari Serv),” the older Kannam said. “We’re talking about (being here) multiple times per week. And today, we’re talking multiple times
per day.” That’s right, Kannam and his son made multiple trips to Dari Serv throughout Friday afternoon, March 23. While they both went with the customary vanilla soft during their first visit, they frequently change things up. “I usually get stuff off the specials menu,” Kannam’s son said. “They have good specials here. We also like the swirls.” The anticipation for this day comes after a long winter of Durham Dari Serv on its opening day, Friday, March 23. eating tubs of ice cream Logan Reardon, Special to the Record-Journal from the grocery store, which, according to the Kannams, don’t compare. 203-317-2232 Twitter: @LoganReardon20

Letters to the Editor To the editor: The time has come for us all — backyard and commercial food growers, animal farmers and land care managers — to co-create a new world with no pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. Cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and other chronic health problems continue to sky-rocket. We have created this mess and we can fix it by growing
and eating only organic nongenetically modified food, by minimizing dietary meat, by using brush-hogs, mowing and burning along roadsides and by grooming playing fields, yards and golf courses naturally.
I would like to commend the students, staff, faculty and administration for their efforts. The event was handled with the purpose and dignity

“It’s a newer show,” she added, “which we thought we be kind of exciting.” The story follows the graduating class of William Ocean High School as they live through their senior year, as they experience the fun, the heartbreak, the loves and the loneliness of growing up, all set to the biggest hits of the 80's. The cast of “Back to the 80s” stars Alexander Stephan as “Corey Palmer,” Sarina McCoy as “Tiffany Houston,” Dylan Sartor as “Michael Feldman” and Emily Dell’Orfano as “Eileen Reagan.” Corey is madly in love with the girl next door, Tiffany, who is one of the coolest girls in school. The school year includes the class president election, the arrival of new students and an illicit rendezvous between the teachers, sparking some of the most memorable songs from the era. The show is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre Inte r nat i o na l . The artistic team, led by director Erin Schilling, features choreography by Schilling and orchestra direction by CRHS music teacher Tim Fisher. Erica Fisher said the students did their own research on the 1980s, from watching music videos to talking to their parents. Some parents even provided their yearbooks or authentic ‘80s duds for inspiration. Maybe parents will want to hang on to the best stuff because the April 7 show will feature a 1980s costume contest. — Press Release

Enough already, Old Man Winter Dear Old Man Winter,
worn out your welcome, my friend. Oh, we tolerated you I’m on a roll with letter-writ- well enough back in Deceming these days. I’ve come to ber, when you first made love it. stuff. It was beautiful. Until it got all dirty and yucky, that is. Then we wanted it gone. I think you slid into overkill, Monsieur Winter. I believe a snowstorm every now and then would have been acceptable to most of us. But you got carried away. You just kept piling it on and piling it on. I know of this, because of my acute distaste of shoveling.

And please forgive the rant, but you did put a chill in the air, in my home. I keep the heat at a very respectable temperature, but it was no match for your winds that And you brought us arctic sneaked into the crooks and temps, back in January, and crannies of my house. But really, I can forgive all this. This is, after all, Connecticut, and this is, after all, your season. You patiently wait all year for the other three seasons to bow out, so who can blame you for having a heyday? And though it does not seem like it to us mere mortals, your time is limited, and I’m sure you want to make the most of it. But here’s where I take issue with you. Must you linger on and on and on? As of this writing, yesterday was the first day of spring. Or so we are told. And today you plan to pummel us again, with, if the meteorologists are to be believed, roughly a ton and a half of snow. Really?! Have I, or have I not, mentioned that I do not like shoveling? My feet are longing for their release from shoes/mini torture chambers. And my kitties are just itching to get into their window boxes. Need I go on? Here’s the thing, and I hope you remember this. This kind of behavior from you is much better tolerated in January than in March. Come March, we are just plum worn out. We want green and flowers and birds singing to us in the morning and balmy days. We are ready to bid you a not-sofond adieu. I’m afraid, ol’ boy, that nobody likes you very much these days. I hope I’m not being too harsh. But hey, someone’s got to tell you. In all fairness, though, you’re probably kicking up your heels and having one last fling before retreating. It’s obvious that you don’t want to leave. But leave you must, my friend. Spring is waiting in the wings, and we are eager to receive her. You’ve had your turn. Now let her have hers.

Cat Tales has scheduled its annual fundraising event, “Cats in the Castle,” for Saturday, April 14, 6 to 10 p.m., at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville.
Nathan was living on the streets and got his foot caught in an inhumane trap when he was rescued. Now that his foot has healed, he feels like a whole new cat. He thinks belly rubs are the best thing ever and really enjoys being petted. He also thinks people are pretty great. He may need a bit of time to adjust to his new home. Nathan has FIV, humans and dogs can't get it, and it is very difficult for other cats to get. Just keep him healthy with annual vet exams and Nathan can live just as long as any other cat. He is waiting for family to finally call his own. For more information and to meet Nathan, call 860-3449043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit www.CatTalesCT.org/ cats/Nathan

Green Bank presents PACEsetter awards The Connecticut Green Bank recently announced the winners of the 2017 PACEsetter Awards. The award winners are a driving force behind the success of the Green Bank’s Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy program. Honored in the Outstanding Project, 2017 category was Direct Energy of Middletown & Durham Agricultural Fair Association, Inc. for their solar project, a Power Purchase Agreement secured by C-PACE, at the Durham Agricultural Association Fairgrounds. The solar PV system at the fairgrounds is 188.65 kW. C-PACE is an innovative program, administered by the Green Bank, which helps commercial, industrial, and non-profit property owners access affordable, long-term financing for meaningful energy upgrades to their buildings. C-PACE enables building owners to finance qualifying energy efficiency and renewable energy improvements through a voluntary assessment on their property tax bill. As the program grows, more Connecticut businesses achieve lower energy costs and increase their bottomline. — Press Release
