The Regional School District 13 Board of Education ruled out hiring armed security guards from private companies Wednesday, April 11 after a budget public hearing.
Board member Bob Yamartino made a motion to specifically preclude using any of the $400,000 in the proposed FY18-19 budget to hire armed guards for the schools while still permitting SROs.
Several parents have voiced their concerns over anyone, even an SRO, bringing a gun into a school.
The decision stipulated hiring a school resource officer is still on the table. SROs are active or retired law enforcement officers tasked with safe-

Coginchaug student-athletes feted By Thomas J. Pellegrino Special to Town Times
Coginchaug Regional High School held a special event on Wednesday, April 11 – “The Signing.” New athletic director Kory Kevorkian put the event together to recognize the Coginchaug senior athletes who are planning to continue their careers in college.
Her latest book, “Grieving, the Sacred Art: Hope in the Land of Loss,” was published by Skylight Paths Publishing earlier this month.
Out of over 7 million high school athletes in the country, only about 500,000 of those will go on to compete at the collegiate level.
The book, Irish said, includes both current bereavement research as well as tangible suggestions to help people work with and learn from their grief.
Six members of the Coginchaug Class of 2018 will be among that select group.
“Grief is a subject whose time has come,” she said.

The $400,000 amount was not arbitrary. It would cost about $260,000 to purchase 3M brand window film to reinforce windows against bullets and $140,000 to hire an SRO, according to school budget documents.
Maya Liss, of Durham, said during the budget hearing not knowing how that money is going to be spent makes her uncomfortable.
The board allocated $100,000 from debt service, $181,000 from capital reserves and $119,000 in salaries, so the overall bud-

Area stars shine at R-J Invitational Reigning state champs throw down the gauntlet (and raise the bar) at annual showcase By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
WALLINGFORD — Sheehan senior pole vaulter Stephanie Phoenix leapt over the bar Friday and crashed into the pit in pure excitement. She had shattered her previous school outdoor record of 10 feet with a jump of 11 feet and let out a scream of delight. “I knew I had it coming because I jumped 10-6 in indoor, but I didn’t think I would be jumping it and breaking the outdoor record by a foot,” Phoenix said. “I’m just shocked in myself and I’m excited with what the rest of the season will hold. The warm weather really helped. This is the first time I’m not competing in layers and baggy sweatshirts. This is just a great environment for vaulting.” Friday’s overdue warm weather was pleasing to all of the area track teams as they converged on Sheehan High School for the annual Record-Journal Invitational track and field meet. Phoenix won against a field that included indoor Class L state champion Hannah Cloutier of Maloney, who finished second at 10-6. The meet also featured a pair of seniors heading to Division I programs. Cheshire distance runner Brendan Murray, bound for Yale, collected two victories for the Rams, though not in his usual events. Southington thrower Amanda Howe, ticketed for the University of Iowa, was also a doublewinner. Murray was tops in the 800 meters in 2:05 and was the anchor of the winning sprint medley relay behind Eli Moskowitz, Mark Rubin and

Frank Barolli (3:47.78). It was a good day all in all,” Murray said. “Our team SMR team came in seeded fifth and getting the win was great. It is a good confidence booster for the team. I was able to close out on the 800 on some tired legs. This was a good training day. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.” Howe was best in the shot put (36-0) and discus (13108), a solid start to the season as the senior looks to defend her State Open and New England discus championships. “This year, my main goal is to break the state record for discus,” Howe said. “I’m pretty sure it’s a 149-11 and my PR last year was a 144-8. I would like to be state champion in shot and hammer, and possibly break the state record in hammer. I also would like to be an AllAmerican. With how hard I’m working, I feel I have a
pretty good shot of accomplishing those things.” Also shining on Friday was Platt junior Elizabeth Garlock, who nabbed first place in the high jump (4-10) and long jump (15-6). “High jump: I didn’t think I was going to get up that high. I just try to have fun in the Record-Journal Invitational,” Garlock said. “I got over all heights on my first try and I was pleased getting my personal best. I was happy to win long jump too. This is always such a fun event.”

Lyman Hall sophomore Michael Toppin swept the triple and long jumps. He took the triple jump at 413 and the long jump at 19-7.
“Just seeing how deep we were in the indoor season and how well we did, we just want to keep it going,” said Jandreau, who recently verbally committed to run at Division II New Haven. “I knew these races would be close today. I just had to dig keep and get it done.”
“It meant a lot that I was able to win two events today,” said Toppin, who was the SCC said. “I pushed myself to do well today.”

One of my concerns is, now we'll be just like everyone else, with nothing special to offer except high property taxes to go along with a runof-the-mill school curriculum.
Music has been an integral part of the school system for many years and all one has to do is attend one of the district’s phenomeAlong with cutting the inte- nal plays or musicals to see just how engaged these kids are and what this brings to their lives and to the utmost enjoyment of anyone attending. For example, we attended the fantastic 1980'sthemed musical the other night and we enjoyed absolutely every minute of this show. These kids did a fantastic job and clearly had a lot of fun doing it.

Closing John Lyman School and eliminating the Integrated Program would be another huge mistake, along with a costly one down the road for the taxpayers. And, most definitely, the handwriting will be on the wall for renovations or the construction of another school because one of the existing schools will either become out-dated or overcrow ded.

Belle, 1 year old, is a quiet and mellow girl most of the time, but she does enjoy a good game chasing wand toys. She is affectionate and seeks attention from people she knows, but tends to be a bit shy with strangers at first. She loves to be petted and will purr and rub against hands for more attention. Belle still prefers to stay in her cage, though, where she feels safe. She would love a home with someone who has a very outgoing, affectionate cat that can be her friend. Belle will take some time to adjust and will need to be kept in a small room until she feels comfortable. She is waiting for a patient and understanding person to adopt her soon. For more information, call 860-344-9043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit www.CatTalesCT.org/cats/Belle.
