Democrats have their candidate for 101st district MADISON - May 16, at Memorial Town Hall in Madison, Democratic delegates from Madison and Durham came together to unanimously nominate John-Michael Parker as their candidate for State Representative of the 101st General Assembly district. The campaign also announced it had raised over $6,000, with contributions from more than 150 residents of the two towns, thereby reaching the goals to qualify for the Citizen’s Election Program.

nesses, and our seniors, and I’m proud to lend him my full endorsement. He understands the values that we hold dear in our community, and I believe he will represent us well in the legislature.
Parker was nominated by Katie Stein, chair of Madison’s Board of Education, and seconded by Elizabeth Shoudy, co-chair of the Durham Democratic Town Committee. Additional support came from community members Taffy Bowes, a long-time program director at Madison Youth and Family Services and current therapist at Grove School, and Michael Shirley, a fellow Hand alumni and leader at Garrity Innovation.
In his remarks, Parker spoke about the need to support economic development across the state in order to get our budget back on track; to fight for our fair share of funding—particularly through the Education Cost Sharing program—in order to get our local taxes under control; and to stand up for our seniors and our working families in order to make Madison and Durham accessible and affordable not just for those already living here, but also for young professionals, like him, who want to build a life and career in our district.
Peggy Lyons, chair of the Madison Town Democratic Committee, said, “JohnMichael is a man of integrity, creativity and intelligence. He will be an excellent new voice for Madison residents in Hartford and knows our community well. According to State Senator As an alumni of the Madison Ted Kennedy, “John-Michael public schools and Yale Uni- represents a new generation of public servants who are versity, he is very in-tune $G 0XVW EH 3UHVHQWHG IRU 7KHVH 3ULFHV rolling up their sleeves to with the challenges we face tackle the complex chalas a shoreline community. & $ 5 ,1& '%$ 35,&( &203$5,621 facing our towns and 7LUH 6L]H 3 5 (FRQRP\ He understands the delicate lenges 7RZQ )DLU 7LUH ([SUHVV our state. Middlefield residents fared better. First Selectman Ed Bailey said damage overall was minimal. Power outages mostly affected Jackson Hill Road and the Lake Beseck area, he said, and was restored fairly quickly. Flipping through my address book; a trip down memory lane Nothing can whisk me back through the portals of time faster than my address book. It coughs up memories as I am flipping through its pages, in search of some number. It tells the story of my life, in alphabetical order. A plethora of characters march across the pages, anchoring me in a particular time and space. Oh, here are some people I
worked with when I was a job coach at SARAH. It was a tough job, sometimes fraught with perils. Though we no longer have contact with each other, these folks shall remain forever in my
heart. We had each other’s backs for a long time. Bonds of steel were forged. Here’s the number of a woman I used to see every week at my health food
store. She was loud and gutsy and funny and utterly charming. A whirlwind of a woman, really. The actor Eli Wallach was her brother-inlaw, and her stories of her life, and his, were riveting. She was up there in years back then. I no longer see her, and I imagine she has left this earthly realm. But I am so grateful that she swept into my life, all those years ago. I come across the number of a metaphysics store that

There are the numbers of the two women I used to kayak with, every weekend in the summer, for years. Those were magical days, to be cherished forever. We would go to a different place every time, sometimes on the Connecticut River, sometimes in the Sound. We packed our lunch and our sunscreen and our water bottles, and we made a day of it. Sometimes my arms ached the next day, from all the rowing, but it was a small price to pay for all those hours spent in that aquatic paradise, with nary a care in the world. We would often find some island tucked away somewhere, and we’d look for shells, and we’d swim. Sun, surf, seagulls, and the company of good friends. What could be better?

closed its doors ages ago. I loved that place. The owners did not care a whit that I came in barefoot, as they were free of spirit themselves. I became quite close to them and the people who worked there, as we viewed the world in much the same way. We would talk about matters that meant the most to us, delving into the mysteries of this grand life, and even the one after it. And laugh. There was always a lot of laughing. I was home there.
We’ve gone our separate ways, those ladies and me, but I’ll carry those magical days with me forever. There are a numbers of friends I made when I supervised the corn maze at Lyman Orchards, one of whom is a dear friend to this day. She’s a lifer! And I’m instantly brought back to those days where my livelihood played itself out in a cornfield. It doesn’t get any better than that. Every day that cornfield swelled with hordes of happy people making their way through the twists and turns of the maze. You just can’t be in that kind of an envi-

Carr And I learned something that has stuck with me. When I was faced with a multitude of tasks that had to be dealt with in the moment, the only option was to focus on what was directly in front of me, and then the next thing, and the thing after that. And before I knew it, everything got done. This, I knew, was something to be taken out into my life. Stay in the moment. Don’t wander too far down the road. It will all get done. It will all work out.
There are the numbers of the rescue organizations that gave me my dear kitties, past and present. I needn’t say more.
Numbers of my son’s friends, in Sweden. I remember time well-spent with them, when I was visiting. Johann, who loves our country and has everything American he can get his hands on. David, who is one of the funniest people I ever met. Pela, who made me one of the best meals I have ever had the privilege of eating. Jose, my son’s best friend, who would always buy me chocolate, and to whom I am
