Powder Ridge gears up for summer By Ashley Kus Record-Journal staff

Summer at Powder Ridge kicked off recently with new activities and thrills, including a 1,400-foot long zip line that travels up to 45 miles per hour.

By Lauren Takores Town Times

The Record-Journal talked with Sean Hayes, CEO and co-owner of Powder Ridge, about making the park a year-round experience.

Coginchaug Regional High School students have higher SAT scores than state and national averages, but nearly half of students missed performance benchmarks.

Q: What are some changes at the park? Hayes: We have a lot of new things going on at Powder Ridge this year. We’ve been pushing and designing the facility to be a year-round facility and this year really marks the next step in that evolution. Q: What activities will you be offering this summer?

Jackie Spahr DURHAM-Jackie Spahr passed away at CT Hospice with her husband Paul nearby this Wednesday, May 30th, 2018 ending her third battle with cancer. She has been a Durham resident for the past 8 years, previously lived in New Haven for 14 years and lived in California before meeting her husband. Jackie, a Seventh-day Adventist, was passionate about her faith. She would share her beliefs and pray with anyone that showed an interest. Libraries were also very important to her. She volunteered and later worked in East Haven’s Hagaman Memorial Library for over 18 years. One of her proudest achievements was starting and running the library at her church for 17 years. She loved to travel, especially mountains, seashores or cruises. Some of her favorite places were Alaska, Yosemite, Sequoia, Yellowstone and Niagara Falls.

And of course, there were cosmetics, a lifelong hobby which she also sold for a while in California. Her parents, Norman and Frances Kemmerick predeceased her in 2012. A memorial service will be held June 10th at 11:00AM at the Seventhday Adventist Church on 300 Paddock Avenue, Meriden, CT 06450. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to any of the following charities in memory of Jackie: American Lung Association (www.lung.org), Breast Cancer Research Foundation (www.bcrf.org), National Breast Cancer Foundation (www.nationalbreastcancer.org), American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) or the Library Fund at the Meriden Seventh-day Adventist Church https://adventistgiving.org/#/org/AN4MGG/ envelope/start Arrangements in care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St, Guilford. Letters to the Editor Honored to serve To the editor: Well, another campaign season is here! It was an honor to be unanimously endorsed to run for another term as State Representative for the 101st District of Madison and Durham. Thank you to Madison’s First Selectman Tom Banisch for nominating me and Durham’s Chairman of the Republican Town Committee, Bill Laflamme, for seconding. I am so grateful for the trust of all the delegates. There is a lot of work that needs to still be done but none more critical than stabilizing Connecticut’s financial picture. Over the past two years, we have finally started to work in a bipartisan manner and initiate controls and predictability to our state budget and regulations. We are one of the few states who have failed to regain the jobs lost in 2008. In order

to change our economic outlook we must change not only our policies but our attitude of working together for everyone. We must move away from policies that have been punitive to our state businesses, job creators and retirees.

In November, Connecticut will elect a new governor with new direction and new opportunities. This election is critical to moving forward and restoring Connecticut to the great state that we all call home and love.

As always, I will continue to advocate for fiscal common sense and for creating sound policies that will move our state forward. Of course, I will continue my work for seniors, children and those with special needs while working to also address our opioid crisis and mental health initiat i ve s.

Thank you all.

I promise to continue serving you with the positive attitude, maximum effort and the leadership that the residents of the 101st District have come to expect from me. I look forward to speaking with many of you during this very important campaign season.

State Representative Noreen Kokoruda

Wake up To the editor: I was brought up in a farming community – Durham –and still live on the same road. Eighty years. All my uncles were dairy farmers and we were brought up on raw milk, all four of us kids, and so far most of us have reached 80. In those days the farmer brought up his family on the farm, raised his own beef, pigs, chickens, sold eggs and bacon and took his milk in large metal cans to a loading

dock for the big truck to take away. Then the state (government) told the farmer he could not use those metal cans anymore, he had to put milk in a big cooler (at his own expense) and have a big tank truck come in and pump it out and send it off to a “refinery” where they would boil it and take all the goodness out of it and resell it to us (as that will make us healthier.) So then the price of feed would go up and the price the farmer got for his milk would go down. So now the farmer has to go out and get a “job” just to support his family and be able to still keep the farm, which is a 24/ 7 operation. Does this make any sense? Where have all the farms gone since 1940? Now Greenbacker’s no longer has cows, no corn planted in the

big field. I do not like what I see. It seems everything has to be in “mega size” – mega houses, mega farms, mega cars/trucks, mega highways to carry all the mega trucks to bring us milk and produce from “away.” Does this make any sense? But then, I have said for a long time, there is no more common sense. I will miss seeing the cows out in pasture; always a peaceful feeling. Good luck to the Greenbackers, God bless. Wake up, people. Wake up, Durham. No farms, no food. Irene Curtis Roberts Durham

In my mind I'm gone to Carolina As I write this column, I am only two days away from a visit to my son in North Carolina. And at the time of you reading it, I am back home. With stories, I am sure, to regale you with. Stay tuned! I am beyond excited to see my son. We have been spending a considerable amount of time talking about our reunion, like two kids eagerly awaiting Christmas.

I also love my son’s fiancé and her boys, so I will be in the best of company for the entire weekend.

And we will stay up late every night, talking and laughing and reminiscing, and it will not matter that I will automatically wake up at my usual time of 5 a.m. and I will not be able to go back to sleep. I’ll just drink buckets of tea, in order to put a little giddy-up in my step. I am known as Willow in that neck of the woods. When I was there six years ago, and Thomas and Tabitha were discussing possible names for their soonto-arrive baby, I mentioned that I had always wished my name was Willow. So now, down there anyway, it is. And Willow will look at her son, the entire weekend, with the eyes of a mother who cannot believe her good fortune to walk through life with this stellar lad. He has taught me much, mostly about kindness. He was a fine boy, and now he’s a fine man. So yes, I am very excited about my upcoming trip. Well, the part when I arrive, not the getting-there part.

There are many risks associated with teen alcohol and drug use. Underage substance use can cause negative consequences such as car accidents, personal injury, and in some cases, addiction. The human brain is not fully developed until a person reaches their mid-20s.
