Despite drownings, no changes planned at pond By Lauren Takores Town Times
The death of a Southington man last month marks the ninth drowning death since 2000 at Millers Pond State Park in Durham. On June 16, Donovan Perry, 27, was pulled from the water and pronounced dead. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled his death an accidental drowning. The entrance to Millers Pond State Park in Durham on Wednesday, June 27. Lauren Takores, Town Times

tions, selected 10 candidates and then narrowed that pool down to three people.
The search continues for a new Brewster Elementary School principal after an initial pool of candidates didn’t pan out. The current plan is to begin the school year with an interim principal.
Two of those candidates accepted positions in other districts, and the administration chose not to hire the final candidate, after a formal interview and a focus group meeting with the entire Brewster faculty and staff.
Outgoing Principal Nancy Heckler is retiring after 18 years at Brewster, and plans to continue to work through July to assist in a smooth transition.
Veronesi said in the letter the administration considered feedback from parents, faculty and staff gathered through surveys and focus groups.
Candidate search
“We will continue the process of finding the very best candidate,” she said. “Someone who is visible, an effective and consistent communicator, fun, supportive, values staff input, and fosters shared leadership.”
In a letter to Brewster families, Superintendent Kathryn Veronesi said the Central Office administration reviewed 40 applica-

Eversource ready for high electricity demand Though high electricity usage during a heat wave can put a strain on the electric system, Eversource prepares year-round to meet that increased demand and is offering tips on how customers can save energy, stay comfortable and keep electric bills low. To help customers endure the peak of summertime heat, Eversource is offering easy tips to keep homes more comfortable and energy bills low.
Increase the temperature on air conditioners. Keep air conditioners set at a moderate temperature throughout the day; cranking the unit up after work uses more electricity. Programmable thermostats or temperature timers can also help keep costs manageable, especially when away from home. Keep air conditioner filters and coils clean. Clean air conditioner filters and coils at least every three months.

and outlets, and window and door frames, to keep cool air from escaping and letting hot air in.
Don’t block air flow. Keep air vents clear of obstructions such as furniture, curtains and rugs. For those with central air and floor vents, consider using vent deflectors to direct and increase the reach of cooled air.
Save major appliance use until the evening. Help conserve energy by using appliances like clothes washers and dryers early in the morning or late in the evening, when there is less demand on the electric system.

Strange things are afoot in my sock drawer
BRe s
Sometimes my house likes to run off with my checkbook. I think it realizes it’s not going to get very far with it, though, and it always returns it. It takes great delight in swallowing people’s phone numbers. So please do not be offended if you don’t hear from me. You might hear from my house, though. It likes to play games. It’s always hiding my watch on me. I don’t wear my watch. Rather, it sits out on my counter, with its alarm set to the next thing I must remember. Like when to leave the house for an appointment or my job, or when to give my kitty her insulin shot. I really do always remember on my own, but my all-day beeping gives me a sense of security. Democrats to have primary for Senate election By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — Democrats will have a primary for the nomination in the 13th Senate District after a 24-year-old Fairfield transplant qualified for the ballot. Secretary of the State Denise W. Merrill’s office announced June 27 that Alex Tiktinsky, who moved to Meriden in March to run for the seat, had collected 929 certified petition signatures, clearing the 918 he needed from registered Democrats
living in the district. The office stops tallying signatures once a candidate clears the threshold. He can now challenge Mary Dougherty Abrams, a Meriden resident and the party’s endorsed candidate, in the Aug. 14 primary for the nomination and the chance to oppose Sen. Len Suzio, RMeriden. Tiktinsky said he and a group of volunteers knocked on over 3,500 doors in the towns of Cheshire, Meriden, Middlefield and Middle-

Belle, 1, is a quiet and mellow cat most of the time, but does enjoy chasing wand toys. She is very affectionate and seeks attention from people she knows, like the Cat Tales volunteers. But she tends to be a bit shy with strangers. She prefers to stay in her cage, where she feels safe. She would love a home with an outgoing, affectionate cat that can be her buddy. She is keeping her paws crossed that a very patient and understanding family will adopt her soon. Coginchaug Area Transition garden in the works Coginchaug Area Transition plans to organize a Common Good Garden, specifically planted and tended by volunteers in order to supply fresh and healthy (no chem-
icals) produce to those who may not have ready access to it. Usually Common Good gardens are hosted by churches
or other houses of worship, but in this case, CAT’s aim is to use land behind the Middlefield Community Center (if approved by the Board of Selectmen) and assemble a
group of volunteers from local churches, organizations, individuals and through the CAT network of friends and supporters.
For more information, call Betsy St. John (860-3499174), Judy Moeckel (860280-7638), Jen Huddleston or Sue VanDerzee (860-3490777).
