CATS OF THE WEEK

Bailey, 3, and Milo, 2, are best friends who were rescued as strays. They came to Cat Tales and formed a wonderful bond. Milo loves his belly rubbed and Bailey is a little shy, but likes to be petted. The pair would like to be adopted together. Milo is FIV+ but he’s a lover, not a fighter so it’s very difficult for other cats to catch. The pair would be great at cuddling while watching TV or snuggling on the bed. Come meet the best friends. For more information, call 860-344-9043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit http://www.CatTalesCT.org/cats/Bailey.

Cheryl Pizzo, chair of the Middlefield Democratic Town Committee, said, “As Mary meets with voters they will immediately connect with her genuineness. She brings compassion, conviction and most importantly integrity to the race. She is a champion for the people.” Judy Villa, chair of the Cheshire Democratic Town Committee, commented, “Mary Abrams is a person who cares deeply about government as a force for

good, having come forward to make a difference in our state senate that is locked in a battle of political views. A former school teacher and principal, she knows how to work with all stakeholders to reach fair legislation that balances the needs of citizens with fiscal reality.” In addition to the endorsement of the towns represented by the 13th Senate district, Abrams also has received the endorsement of the Working Families Party, Connecticut ALF-CIO, CSEA SEIU and the political action organization Politica. — Press Release

Summertime … and the livin’ is easy Dear Summer,

I have developed a fondness, as of late, of writing letters, which is rather amazing considering how much I hated writing them when I was a kid. And you, my friend, are up to bat. So let us give credit where credit is due. I just love the way you line up the birds in the morning, under my window it seems, to serenade me into the day. And when I

The insect world has been snacking on me, and it is not to my liking. I have been itching like crazy, what with this bump and that bump. And I am trying not to scratch so much because that just keeps the whole debacle going. I seem to be losing the battle, though. I just hate itching, and if you had a body, I’m sure you would, too.

climb back into bed at day’s end, I am lulled into Dreamland by the cheerful sounds of crickets. It’s one of my favorite sounds. I always feel like all is right with the world when I hear them. I do have one point I would like to bring up, however. I get up at 5 every morning, and I am pleased to see that you get up with me. I glory in the sun shining brightly through my window in the early morn. But lately it seems that sun is not arriving quite so early, and it’s only July. Please bring it back.

But m’lady, I am giving you a “thumbs up” on everything else. I love having all my windows open, and going barefoot, and not having to put on tons of winter gear when I walk out the door. I love the fresh organic veggies I get every week at a farmer’s stand. I love swirling ‘round and ‘round in my pool, reading and drinking tea. I love going to the beach and paddling around in the saltwater, which is my life’s blood. I love the mint and the lemon balm that sprawls all over my backyard. And the honeysuckle that drapes over my fence. And I love the way the birds talk to each other all day. It’s a neverending symphony. I will also say that I am pleased with my tan. Skin experts say to skip the sun and the tan, but that is not going to happen. I look so pasty in the winter, and now I look so healthy. I’m stickSee Carr, A15

than that inherent in human trafficking?

Indefinite detention of American citizens was made legal in the NDAA, which Obama signed and Trump is using against natural-born citizens of illegal immigrant parents. Further back are statutes resultant of the post 9/11 Patriot and Victory acts where vague descriptions of enemies could be applied to Americans indiscriminately. A cursory familiarity of any such acts without conscientious study beyond reports of popular media outlets is our biggest mistake as citizens. Delving into history, as well as congressional documents, would be a sound start.

Prevention of Lyme disease certainly starts with tick control. There are many good products available from your veterinarian, both topical (spot-ons, collars, sprays) and oral. Spraying the yard and environment will help. There are a number of natural and organic treatments for your dog and the environment, but pick something that works in your area, advises Cary. Keeping the lawn mowed and the yard manicured will also help. Ticks like long grass, brush and usually shady areas. Cary says there is also a vaccination program that is very effective. Check with your veterinarian for their protocol and to see whether to vaccinate or not. It may be decided your dog is not a candidate. Lyme disease is a complicated disease with many questions still alluding researchers, says Cary. Your veterinarian is your best friend when it comes to how you should approach it with your dogs, relative to diagnosis, treatment, tick control and vaccination. Use that valuable resource.
