Middlefield on track to join health district By Lauren Takores Town Times

Middlefield officials are moving toward joining the Plainville-Southington Regional Health District, after the positions of town sanitarian and health director were eliminated in this year’s budget. “The health district will provide us with the services that are normally provided in-house,” First Selectman Ed Bailey said Tuesday, such as granting septic system and well permits and conducting food provider and restaurant inspections. “By joining a health district,” Bailey said, “we’ll have greater resources to tap into, such as educational programs, outreach programs.” Connecticut State Troopers James Bria, left, and Alexander Cintron began in April as Middlefield’s resident state troopers. members of Troop F in Westbrook.

There are a few new faces in law enforcement around town.

The troopers formerly assigned to Middlefield and Rockfall were replaced in April. Brendan Rea retired and Timothy Kendrick was transferred to a Major Crime Unit, according to Connecticut State Police officials.

Middlefield has been assigned new resident state troopers and Durham has gained a summer shift trooper. Resident state troopers are

over, with Bria on day shift and Cintron covering evenings. Bria, 32, graduated from the police academy in 2014 and is a former Comcast lineman. A desire to help people brought Bria to law enforcement, he said.

The sanitarian and health director position were cut in the latest budget, which was passed in May. Former sanitarian Lee Vito had retired, and former health director Dr. Matt Huddleson had stepped down. Because Middlefield is classified a part-time health department, the town had a difficult time finding a new health director, Bailey said. Middlefield’s budget allots $50,000 to join the health district. The town would pay an initial amount to buy into the health district reserve and an annual per capita cost, which is based on municipality population. Towns are billed quarterly. The state Department of Public Health has grants of $15,000 available to towns with part-time health departments. Bailey said the town intends to apply for this grant.

The town has $150,000 available from a federal grant through the state Department of Housing. The money is in a revolving fund, according to First Selectman Ed Bailey, and as loans get repaid, the money is loaned out again.

Income limits for the program are $47,000 for single household and $66,000 for a family of four. Bailey said the money is for repairs, not enhancements, such as replacing a home’s roof, digging a new water well or installing a septic system.

Not to rush things, but I can’t wait for next summer It’s still July, but already I am bemoaning summer’s demise. I hate being like this. I want to be the sort of intrepid soul who lives for the day, with nary a thought of impending doom. (Yes, I would classify the end of summer as “doom.”) such shenanigans. But I can’t seem to help it. I do this every year. Because once we hit August –and we’re almost there – it seems like the season is rolling away from us at a fast clip. Already it feels a little dimmer, outside my window, when I get up at 5, and I’m noticing that it is getting dark a bit earlier at day’s end. I think it’s way too early for

Actually, I’m pretty mellow for most of July, all wrapped up in summer’s glow like I am. I feel like we’ve just gotten started. It’s at the end of the month that my angst kicks in. All through August I will, though I wish I didn’t, keep a running tally in my head of the remaining summer days that are allotted to us.

To Steve Obsitnik, the other four GOP gubernatorial candidates can be divided into two categories — “career politicians” and financial sector executives.

Middlefield joins Sustainable CT

ARTIST HONORED

By Lauren Takores Town Times

The Middlefield Board of Selectmen voted this month to participate in the Sustainable CT municipal certification program. Sustainable CT is a voluntary program in which towns choose actions aimed at sustainability and implement them to earn points toward a certificate. Action items include improving watershed management, supporting arts and creative culture, reducing energy use and increasing renewable energy, designing streets that meet the needs of walkers and bikers as well as cars, improving recycling programs, assessing climate vulnerability, supporting local businesses and providing efficient and diverse housing options. Local action First Selectman Ed Bailey said on July 17 that some existing town programs count toward completing action items. Alanna Rondinone, of Middlefield, received honorable mention recognition at the annual “The Joy of Art!” juried art show at The Hospital for Special Care.

“We don’t have that problem,” Bailey said. The town is, however, working on promoting public transit and mobility strategies, and those actions would count toward certification. Durham First Selectman Laura Francis was a member of the CCM Task Force on Sustainability, which turned into an advisory committee she vice-chaired that created the vision for Sustainable CT. December 2017, to become certified as a Sustainable CT community. Francis said she’s looking forward to partnering with Middlefield to perhaps plan some programs together, such as Middlefield’s proposed solar park on the closed part of the DMIAAB landfill site. There is no cost to participate and towns select their own actions. Sustainable CT is administered by the Institute for Sustainable Energy at Eastern Connecticut State University. Three foundations – Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, Common Sense Fund, and Hampshire Foundation – supported the creation and coordination of the program. More than 50 municipalities have registered to participate, according to Sustainable CT officials. LTakores@record-journal.com 203-317-2212

School records to be destroyed

CAT OF THE WEEK Cat Tales rescued Robin from a burnt, abandoned house, two days after finding her seven, twoweek old kittens. She was a good mother. All her kittens have been adopted and she is ready for her forever home. At 2-years-old, she is a playful and friendly cat who loves to be petted and brushed. She has never met a dog, but with proper introductions with a cat-friendly dog, she would probably be fine. For more information and to meet Robin, call 860-344-9043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit CatTalesCT.org/Robin.

Officers From A1

“Right now I’m more than happy where I am,” he said. “I think this is a great town.”

That helps foster community policing, he said, which is knowing people and creating a rapport, versus reactive policing when officers show up when something bad happens.

As the daytime trooper, Bria is a visible face in the community, on duty when businesses are open and people are out and about.

“It’s something I can work on as opposed to just arresting people,” he said.

“When you’re the resident trooper and you work in a town, you’re the community contact,” Bria said Monday.

Middlefield lies in the northwest corner of Troop F’s territory. There’s a patrol trooper on duty assigned to the whole district, but

it’s Durham’s resident state trooper, Larry Morello, whom he works with most closely. “It’s a partnership,” Bria said. “We have to work together because our towns are so joined at the hip … We have different concerns up here than Durham does, but our communities are still very much linked.” Cintron, 29, majored in psychology and cognitive science at the University of

Connecticut and worked at Rushford in Middletown as case manager. He graduated from the police academy five years ago, and said he found overlap in the two areas of work. “Especially in today’s world,” Cintron said, “we don’t have a lot of mental health places and rehab places, so (police are) usually the folks that go out and respond and try to deal with those issues.” He said he finds a difference

Letters to the Editor Make the district red again To the editor: After careful deliberation I have decided to pursue a run for the United States Congress in the 5th Congressional District of Connecticut as an Independent Conservative candidate. My decision came as a result of my conservative views, which are not aligned with the Connecticut Republican Party. To say that I am disgusted with the insider politics is an understatement. And I share this sentiment with so many in the 5th District.

The 5th Congressional District needs someone who is willing to put the interests of the American people and our country first. Disheartened Republicans and conservatives feel that the party has deserted them and they want their representation back.

Let’s blaze a new path together based on commonsense politics that puts the interest of the people before the wishes of the political insiders. Let’s turn the 5th Congressional District red again. John Pistone Independent Conservative candidate for Congress

I plan to give it to them!

Our children’s health depends on vaccine avoidance, organic food and contact with nature. If public schools continue to require vaccines, make other plans.

August is vaccine month for school children. “Cancer prevention” HPV shots fail to prevent cervical cancer and have horrible toxicity, including stroke, seizures and sudden death.
