McKeen to face Fasano in November election By Matthew Zabierek Record-Journal staff

WALLINGFORD — Aili McKeen defeated Josh Balter in Tuesday’s Democratic primary for the right to challenge Republican incumbent Len Fasano in the 34th Senate District this November. With all but three precincts

and absentee ballots counted, unofficial numbers had McKeen leading by nearly 2,000 votes, the New Haven Register reported. McKeen declared victory on her campaign’s Facebook page Tuesday night. “Together, we did it. We won,” the post read. “Now it

is time to bring our party together and work together for the common good. Together, we can win in November.” The 34th District covers parts of Wallingford, Durham, East Haven and North Haven. Fasano, of North Haven, has not been challenged for the seat since 2012, when he defeated

Democrat Steve Fontana with 58 percent of the votes. McKeen works as an inventory specialist for a public insurance adjuster and is running for office for the first time. Balter is a 20-year U.S. Navy veteran who is now a Branford-based lawyer specializ-

It’s Abrams vs. Suzio By Matthew Zabierek Record-Journal staff

MERIDEN — While many local politicians were bracing for the primaries, Republican Ernestine Holloway was campaigning at the grocery store, on the bus, at picnics and City Council meetings.

MERIDEN — Democrats on Tuesday elected Mary Daugherty Abrams as the nominee to take on Republican incumbent Len Suzio in the 13th Senate District.

Holloway is challenging 12-term Democrat Emil “Buddy” Altobello in the 82nd House District, which covers parts of Meriden, Middlefield and Rockfall.

Abrams, the party’s endorsed candidate, defeated challenger Alex Tiktinsky in the Democratic primary, receiving more than 70 percent of votes. Abrams swept every precinct and received 3,995 votes, or 72 percent, to Tiktinsky’s 1,490 votes, according to unofficial results tabulated at Abrams’ headquarters. Those numbers do not include absentee ballots.

”I want to help the community,” Holloway said. Holloway ran for mayor in 2017 after the city’s GOP endorsed Irene Masse. The election was a big win for Mayor Kevin Scarpati, an unaffiliated candidate, whose 4,128 votes easily toppled Masse. Holloway garnered 520 votes.

Regional School District 13: Engage, Empower, Thrive By Kathryn Y. Veronesi

The most significant and valued connections, however, are those that exist between people. This year parents and the community will experience improved communication from our district and schools as another means of connecting our community to our schools. Our goal is to deliver timely and pertinent information on a predictable schedule

The board will host a Community Engagement session on Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 5:15 to 8 p.m. to provide current information on the utilization process and to give community members an opportunity to offer feedback

One area in particular, the connection to learning in the natural environment, has been identified as a priority by our Strategic Visioning Committee.

Improved communication will mean that our community is more aware of the experiences of our students and staff within the context of our goals and priorities.

This year the Board of Education will continue to make decisions that support district growth and improvement which will include finalizing its recommendation for building use and grade reconfiguration.

Over the course of the past year, the theme of “connection” has been identified as a defining feature of RSD13 and something students, parents, staff and community members want to be a part of increasing. Explicit and subtle connections exist across personal and curricular areas, all of which enhance student learning and development.

Youngsters enjoy messy fun at library By Diana Carr Special to Town Times

On a recent Saturday, youngsters flocked to the Durham Public Library for some messy fun. Tables were set up with colored water, measuring cups, mixing bowls, glue and cans of shaving cream in anticipation of Slime Saturday Summer Edition.

Happy participants rolled the stuff around in their hands, made balls, pulled it into strings.

Nine-year-old Sophia Fappiano, of Durham, was another Slime Saturday newbie. “I really like this,” she said. “I One girl made a glove out of liked that I got to make slime and play with it. Slime Saturday Summer Edition wraps up Aug. 25. The messy fun takes place from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Registration is requested.

Make your own slime: Mix 1/3 cup of Elmer’s School Glue, 1/3 cup of water, and one drop of blue food coloring. Stir until fully combined. Add shaving cream (about ½ cup) until the glue mixture is not sticky to the touch. Stir until fully combined. Measure ¼ cup of water. Add one teaspoon of Insta Snow, and watch as the snow grows. In another measuring cup add ½ cup of hot water. Add one teaspoon of borax. Stir until you can no longer see the borax. Add the Insta Snow mixture to the glue mixture and stir. Slowly add the borax mixture to the glue/Insta Snow mixture and stir until slime begins to form.

Get the facts To the editor: I attended the first phase of the Korn school feasibility presentation and workshop on July 31. A tour was given by David Heer, chairman of the feasibility study committee. The attendance was more than what was expected and there were many questions throughout the evening from interested citizens of Durham. Heer explained how the building offers many opportunities for community, recreational and senior activities, as well as an art center, after school programs and much more.

The most relevant question on everyone’s mind was the cost. The cost to renovate has been budgeted for $7 million, while the cost to build from scratch has been estimated at around $18 million.

Kristen Tyrseck, left, gives a shout as auctioneer Tom Gagliardi seeks out bids at the Art Bra 2018 fundraiser Aug. Photos by Richie Rathsack, Record-Journal 9.

“It’s a flamingo that represents balance and getting balance back into your life after you’ve been hit by the storm of breast cancer,” she said. “My best friend was an art teacher in Southington and she died of metastasized breast cancer, way too young.”

Gladkosky said her best friend would have loved the Art Bra event, which inspired her to create a bra along with the North Haven church group. The inspired “balance” bra was sold during the auction for more than $1,000. Other designs included a Harry Potter-themed bra called “Griffindor House Cups,” shown after the first male model of the night, Brian Hubbs, who sported a pink cow girl-styled bra called “Nice Rack.” The models danced out in

the artists’ creations to a variety of music coordinating with the individuallythemed bras. A raffle was also held for a selection of bras displayed on tables throughout the event hall. More than 500 people attended the 10th anniversary celebration. “It’s a lot of fun, it’s a lot of laughs,” Willett said. “There are times where we do remember those survivors that we have lost that have fought a hard battle.” akus@record-journal.com 203-317-2448 Twitter: @KusReporter

Living on the edge (a smidge) at the Ridge I am so proud of myself. Recently I was brave for about five minutes. Okay, maybe it was only two minutes. But still. You may recall my previous trepidation regarding the upcoming outing that my place of employment was going to have for us. It seemed that any ideas that were tossed about did not sit well with me.

One of my comrades later told me that I looked petrified. I was. And I thought for sure that I was going to go hurdling off into the bushes, because it seemed I was veering to the right a lot. At that point I thought landing in the bushes sounded good, because at least that meant I had stopped. The biggest surprise, though, and it wasn’t a good one, was the beating my tailbone took. This is also a time for us to formally introduce and acknowledge our teacher of the year, Mr. Tim Fisher, director of bands at Cogin-

chaug Regional High School. Mr. Fisher exemplifies the pledge of our mission statement, “Through engagement in authentic learning all Regional School District 13 students are empowered to thrive and contribute as global citizens.” Mr. Fisher’s music room is a place where students feel safe and welcome, where they bring their very best effort each day. Together, conductor and musicians understand that their collective passion and commitment

creates an impact that is far greater than anything they could create individually. Mr. Fisher’s skilled influence engages his students. On the stage, in the community or in the classroom student empowerment is palpable.

Tiktinsky, a 2016 graduate of Colgate University, moved to Meriden from Fairfield earlier this year after getting involved in the district while working for Susan Bysiewicz when she was exploring a run for the seat.

Tiktinsky said Tuesday’s results are not indicative of how hard his campaign worked, noting his campaign

Because Abrams and Tiktinsky’s views on campaign issues largely mirrored each other, the candidates tried to separate themselves in other ways. Abrams emphasized her longtime connections and experience in the district, while Tiktinsky promoted himself as a “new wave of Democratic leadership” needed to fix the state’s problems.

Tuesday’s results are a good sign for Democrats heading into the general election. Suzio won election in 2016 by defeating Democrat Dante Bartolomeo by less than 1,000 votes, despite the fact the district has a higher number of registered Democrats than Republicans.

Tiktinsky, 24, has raised objections to the primary process over the past months, saying he didn’t feel like the local party gave him a fair chance to receive the endorsement over Abrams. He petitioned onto the ballot by collecting more than 918 signatures.

Abrams said.

Holloway believes state lawmakers should do more to change notification laws at the state level. She also said the city needs more buses running after 5 p.m., and taxes are too high, causing people to leave the state. Education is also worrisome with too many children not meeting basic educational standards upon graduation. “Why are they leaving, why do we have so many blighted and empty houses?” Holloway said. “These are issues everybody should talk about.” Holloway was licensed and ordained by Refuge Temple Council of Churches and has been an evangelist pastor for 30 years. She has resided in Meriden for 12 years, establishing the Hope on Hobart program which she says has fed more than 2,800 families in the city during the holidays. Additionally, Holloway says she has provided more than 3,000 children with backpacks filled with school supplies and regularly hosts multi-neighborhood events. These events, Holloway said, are the key to dissolving racial barriers dividing the city. Holloway is campaigning in Middlefield and Meriden. She looks forward to debating her Democratic opponent.

Altobello agrees with Holloway that taxes are too high and that population growth is slower than other states. He said the biggest issues facing the state are the costs of health care rising beyond inflation, jobs and the economy. Altobello ran unopposed two years ago, but is used to competing against a GOP opponent. He also looks forward to a debate. “Certainly after the primaries, I’m open to it,” Altobello said. mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255
