Kinetic Junglist Movement (KJM) participate in DETOUR 2012 with an excerpt of the play Birth of Cicada. Kinetic Junglist Movement is a neo-ritual collective perfomance dance company founded by Amy Secada in 2004. With a focus on paving the way for experimental urban dance theater, Kinetic Junglist Movement creates a space between dream and reality and combines multimedia technology, couture costume design, untamed live scores and the unique junglist movement. Kinetic Junglist Movement captivates the audience with a fusion of African dance, capoeira and yoga with a solid base of modern dance and house dance.
Amy Secada has dedicated her life to reuniting the primal momentum of ancestral and urban expression. Secada discovered her contemporary ritual freestyling in the Jungle and House clubs of NYC in the late 90’s. She has since devoted her passion for the arts to the study of capoeira, yoga, chanting, contact improve and various ritual and afro dance styles from around the world. Secada has lived and studied extensively in India, Africa and Brazil gathering inspiration and a deeper understanding of the healing power of dance and song. In 2004 she founded Kinetic Junglist Movement, an experimental dance collective which lead to international recognition for her unique “Urban Roots” technique. Nike Women acknowledged the athleticism of Secada’s technique in 2007, which lead to a series of solo Nike commercials and performance opportunities with Madonna and Fergie. She is also the curator of the legendary experimental dance festival the Urban Roots Project held in NYC since 2006. Secada is currently living and performing in Brazil for dance theatre collective “Vertente Unica” and developing new works for KJM.
DETOUR DANSEHALLERNE KJM
Kinetic Junglist Movement, Neo-ritual performance collective. Paving the way for experimental urban dance theater since 2004, KJM creates a space between dream and reality combining multimedia technology, couture costume design, untamed live musical scores and the unique “Urban Roots technique. KJM is dedicated to the progression and renewal of ritual art as a tool for self discovery and healing through ancestral and urban expression. Gracing international theatres for almost a decade KJM continues to create new works, perform and represent the legendary primal essence of the NYC Junglist subculture.
The Urban Roots journey incorporates moving meditations, breath work and an exploration of the grounding and healing techniques of African dance and Capoeira. Guided improvisational dance is shifted into ritual and a means to communicate with the spirits. Deep levels of consciousness will be revealed and energy blockages will awaken through your ancient movement and personal expression.
WHAT IS A JUNGLIST? The term “Junglist” hails from the Jungle, Drum and Bass subculture of the UK and American underground in the early 90’s. A Junglist represents the not only the music and aesthetic, but also the lifestyle of the crossroads of roots and electronic culture. Today Junglists have refined and transformed their spectrum of rhythm and sound creating new genres such as Glitch, IDM, Dubstep and countless other subgenres with a similar respect for heavy bass lines, raw electronic melodies and Afro influence. KJM is proud to represent the gritty NYC Jungle scene that is infamous for it’s raw unleashed cyphers and “Underbelly of the Underground” tribal movement.
