he body may grow old but the spirit is forever young; or, at least that’s what I believe. I will always cherish my youth and when I cannot anymore, I guess you can call it curtains for me. As a child, I loved the Transformers and seeing it on the big screen this summer over and over again fully awakened that excitement I felt years ago. See, you can be told to put your Toyz away, but it’s not completely possible because the greatest toy is your mind; and from it, one can imagine and voyage wherever you want. Ten years ago, who would of thought about emailing on the go, and PDA’s and high def TV’s and talking cars as a reality and not just in a sci-fi movie? Well, the future is now and you can get there faster, or in luxury, if you can afford the Toyz displayed on the following pages of this publication. As a treat, you can take it with you as we have video downloads ‘for free’ for your mobile players and cell phones; don’t even mention it! We are all part of the Toyz nation and trust me when I say this is just the tip of the iceberg. Every quarter, I will give you more and every day you can check us out online at www. ownerstoyz.com. You can also drop me a line at toyzmaster@ownerstoyz.com to let me know what you think. I came. I saw… you know the rest. The Owners have just begun Toyz! Enjoy.

o recognize brilliance in Ian Callum’s marvelous work with the XKR is a breeze and a delight. A total redesign including an all-aluminum body, the XKR boasts a supercharged 4.2L V8 that roars to 420hp. I spent a glorious week with the XKR and having spent time behind the wheel of the XK, the differences are outstanding. Both editions of the XK are fabulous coupes; however the ‘R,’ with its additional power and interior with metallic and carbon fiber simulated touches bore a sportier characteristic. Already light with an aluminum body, the ‘R’ was truly exciting to drive. With paddle shifts you can truly enjoy all six-speeds and the build quality is immaculate so you almost get the impression you are in a jet. 20inch wheels came with the vehicle I drove and the large brakes which bear some Brembo components were extremely quick. Driving on I-70 West through the mountains in western Maryland, I was able to properly enjoy the handling and acceleration the boost in power and stiffer suspension provided. At this price point no one should be contemplating value. At slightly over $80K, the XKR cuts its competitors by over $10-$15K; a nice investment in some commodities maybe, or even tech stocks, nonetheless with the premium sound system, breathtaking design which received compliments and comparisons to the Aston (given they were both designed by the same person). The XKR is a must have and an aspiration for my own personal fleet. Visit www.jaguar.com for more information and visit www.OwnersToyz.com for video. — Damola

o gain perspective of the massive success enjoyed by Bentley since their acquisition by VW, you have to remember that in 2003, they sold less than one-thousand cars and this year they are going to reach their capacity of 10,000 vehicles. The Bentley Continental GT has been widely successful worldwide and I had the joy of driving the all-new performance edition, the GT Speed. Bearing even more torque and power than the already fast all-wheel drive GT, the speed is the first ever Bentley to top 200mph. With 600hp and 553lbft of torque, I was thrown back into my seat reaching 0-60mph in .5 seconds quicker at 4.3 seconds. Not only do you get more power with the Speed, you also get the Mulliner treatment with diamond stitched upholstery, lowered ride height and suspension along with a new front grille and air intake. There are no mysteries to the Bentley GT. It is simply the best Grand Tourer, and its success attests to that fact. The Speed just gives you more sporty dynamics and, of course, more power if the 552 (the standard engine) gives you wasn’t enough. The Speed, like the GT, is also an all-wheel drive allowing the monstrous power to be distributed evenly to the 20inch wheels. At a cost $20K north of the $175K you will pay for the GT, the Speed is the only way to GT. For more info, visit www. bentleymotors.com or visit www.ownerstoyz.com for video footage. — Damola

orn from a venerable heritage that spans 60 years of the finest in sports cars, the 612 Scaglietti is a true 2+2 coupe and is powered by Ferrari’s V-12 engine that yields 434lb-ft of torque and 540 hp. The 612 has a top speed of 199 mph and reaches 0-60 in a mere 4.1 seconds, but that is not the primary allure of the Scaglietti. If you want pure speed you may try the F430 Scuderia, which has been fine tuned to be a world class beater on the track. The 612 is more about fine Italian motoring, an appreciation of elegance, and the exclusivity the stallion grants you. For over 60 years, the house of Enzo has made “toys” that grown men desire to play with to lure “Barbie look-a-like’s” to come along for the ride. The 612 Scaglietti is the “Ultimate Luxury Four-Seater” just as the marketing materials suggest! It is one of the featured vehicles in Microsoft’s next iteration of the racing game, “Project Gotham Racing 4,” and it’s a highly revered coupe worldwide. ince the inception of the second generation Escalade, Cadillac has been infusing a fresh and innovative design philosophy into its vehicles. With the introduction of the Cadillac Sixteen the new philosophy had peaked with a breathtaking concept that displayed the ability of an American manufacturer to produce an ultra luxury sports car that married performance and style. Under the leadership of Bob Lutz (who gave the world a glimpse of the CTS on 60 minutes) and Ed Welburn, the 2008 CTS represents the finest in automotive engineering with a superior quality of materials, a passion-invoking design, and performance via a base 3.6 L engine that develops 300hp. Similar to the all new Escalade, the CTS also takes cues from the Sixteen with the new signature grill and side vents. Sharing from its sibling, the SRX, the CTS has 2 sunroofs that cover 70% of the roof area so as to open the cabin. The CTS will also now offer a six speed transmission in both manual and automatic. Pricing has yet to be announced but the 2007 CTS retailed from slightly over $30,000. For more information visit www.cadillac.com. — Damola

eveloped as a study that has origins 45 years ago when Mercedes built 4-door convertible versions of the 300d, the Ocean Drive concept is a stunning convertible interpretation of the S600. Seeing a gap in the market for full-size convertibles below the $350K price point of the Bentley Azure and the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead, the Ocean Drive concept is a perfect execution of style and function. The Drive concept features all the amenities that have made the S Class a top-seller and more, like an automatic soft-top that retracts in 20 seconds, 21-inch wheels, DVD entertainment, and a rear champagne compartment. Performance is swift with the same 6L V12 twin turbo engine that develops 517hp. Perfect for a weekend excursion along the coastline, the Ocean Drive has an audience among several demographics who can truly appreciate a great coach and value the open air experience. — Damola

eaching back to 1941 and invoking the spirit of the Continental Cabriolet, the Lincoln MKR concept is one of the most exhilarating concepts to be debuted by the legendary name plate. The MKR concept is a four-door coupe combining sleek design with fuel-efficient power. Commanded by a 3.5 L V6, the Lincoln MKR delivers 415hp and 400 lb-ft of torque from an E85 ethanol engine. As is expected from Lincoln, the interior is of the highest grade with a black oak instrument panel and creamy, cashmere, leather seats. The large twin-port grille with the star implanted in the middle is a distinctive signature that should make its way into the design language of all Lincolns. Fitted with 21-inch chrome wheels and outfitted with 4-wheel Brembo disc brakes, the MKR means business with crowd-gathering style. The MKR also features suicide doors and several chrome touches. There is no confirmation on whether it will be built but rest assured some of the design cues will make it into future Lincolns. For more information visit. www.lincoln.com.

ntroduced as a concept at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show, the Cadillac Sixteen was an automotive marvel. Inspired by the custom build Fleetwood coach of the 1930’s the sophisticated aluminum chassis possesses a 16 cylinder engine that generates 1000 hp and 1000 lb-ft of torque. The Sixteen was created to illustrate the new design philosophy of Cadillac which has enjoyed success with the Escalade, the first vehicle to adopt cues from the Sixteen. The Sixteen sleek design, signature grill, 24in high polished wheels all made it into the new Escalade. Expect more Cadillac vehicles to take cues from this awe inspiring vehicle.

outed as a research vehicle for evolving fuel technologies, the Mercedes Benz F-700 gives a peek into what may be the next iteration of the benchmark S-Class sedan. Running on a 4-cylinder DiesOTTO drive system (which incorporates the benefits of a diesel engine, but runs on regular old unleaded) ... that displaces just 1.8L, the F-700 has a highly efficient engine that just emits a mere 127 grams of C02 per km and gets 44.3 mpg. To achieve this efficiency, they use a direct injection engine along with turbo charging, making it perform similar to the current 3.5L V6 engine or the 3.0L V6 turbo diesel. As expected, comfort and passenger space are sumptuous. What is great is the commitment by Daimler to produce an eco-friendly sedan that still will excel in quality and performance. lready assured production as per the settlement with the UAW, the Volt represents a massive undertaking by two American Iconic and Titanic companies GM & GE. The pairing of these companies on a project of this scope signals the imminent threat Global Warming bears to our survival and the willingness for Big Corporations to play a part in introducing new technologies to consumers that allow then to be more socially responsible yet making minor alterations to their current lifestyles. Due in 2010 the Volt is a true innovation in motoring as you can use an all electric power train for trips under 40 miles or you can fuel with E85, or gasoline or even biodiesel all with GM’s new E-Flex Propulsion System. The design of the Volt came courtesy of the best young minds in design and features a cutting edge interface. But for me the selling point in fact the deal closer is not having to fill up for as much as 640miles. That is more than phenomenal for more information visit www.chevrolet.com/electriccar

n a joint venture with it’s 30% owned entity VW AG Porsche is developing a hybrid powertrain that will also make it’s way into the Q7 and the Toureg. Still in developmental stages but expected to debut in 2008 as a 2009 model year option the Hybrid is estimated to get an average fuel consumption of 26mpg which represents over a 25% over the current model. The Cayenne Hybrid will feature a full-hybrid design where the hybrid module (clutch and electric motor) is positioned between the combustion engine and the transmission. Other unique features of the Cayenne Hybrid include the power steering and vacuum pump for the brakes, as well as the air conditioning, which operate on electric power. Technical components, such as the oil pump in the Cayenne’s automatic transmission, have been replaced by electrically powered units. Porsche plans to introduce similar hybrid technology in a version of its Panamera four-door Gran Turismo. The Panamera will debut in 2009, with a hybrid to follow. aving driven both the Yukon SLT and the Denali I have grown to love their blend of power and luxury refinement. At a recent GM drive event I made it my purpose to drive the all new Yukon Hybrid and see what the rave is about. I have to admit I had questions in regard to a 5000 plus vehicle operating on hybrid power but with a CVT transmission along with a more than capable battery supplying additional power I was impressed with how the SUV hauled up mountains in NY. Interiors were of the same quality as the other Yukons but that was not my primary concern that’s the simple part my thoughts were on weather this Truck can be just as capable operating with a Hybrid system and the answer was yes. A display was available showing when gasoline power was used and when the switch went to battery power and from my brief encounter I have nothing but high remarks. When informed that you get sedan fuel efficiency like mid 30’s on highway and in the 20’s in daily driving I was floored and with an Active Fuel displacement system supplementing a hybrid I can see how. The Yukon Hybrid is not available till 2008 but I assure you if you are in the market for an SUV make sure you put this one on your list. For more information visit www.GMC.com

hile the bean counters were struggling with the balance sheet, a veritable group of journalists were wowed by the awesome work done by the GM design team. GM is showcasing several new product lines from the G8, an all-new rear drive sedan to the soon to be award winning Cadillac CTS and the upgraded H2 which now boasts a 6.2L motor and a six-speed transmission. Saab also introduced a new Aero edition to the 97X along with a new 9-3. We were given an opportunity to drive the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky on the track and the experience was exhilarating! Pontiac Communications Manager Jim Hopson gave me driving instructions and showed me how to maximize the performance of the lightweight turbo charged convertible. The attention to detail and the new commitment the interior design team exhibited was evident on all the vehicles; especially the new Malibu, the CTS, and the H2. There were several vehicles to drive, but a standout was the new Tahoe Hybrid which was impressive with its fuel economy of a small car reaching over 20mph in city driving and mid 30’s in highway. I was informed that the towing capabilities don’t suffer greatly as the Tahoe can still tow over 6000lbs. Overall I was impressed by the collection and have a great outlook for GM products. fter a historic night where the Baltimore Orioles gave up over 30 runs, my esteemed colleagues and I got the opportunity to drive Nissan’s new rave, the Rogue. Built on an all new platform, the Rogue is a new crossover offering from Nissan that is low-priced, yet fun to drive with a lot of technology and features standard. With CVT, driving the Rogue from Baltimore to Gettysburg was fun. It also is offered available with Bluetooth and a keyless start. Especially with these options, I can see this vehicle making a mark with young buyers and college graduates who can appreciate the functionality the Rogue brings. You can tell the engineers put a lot of attention to the lifestyle of the consumers with the integrated storage and power outlets. Starting at just over $19K, the Rogue is a good value and should fare well in the entry SUV segment. — Damola

TOYZ: TOYZMAKERS * -AYS $ESIGNING A .EW 'ENERATION OF &ORDS Once upon a time Ford Motor Company was flourishing with capital and aquired several brands making it a true global player in the automotive industry as the brands extended from every day cars to the most exclusive name plates. Now Aston Martin has been sold and rumors persist of an impending Jaguar and Land Rover sale. We hope not, but obviously markets dictate and though the design of the Jaguar XF is truly refreshing, the balance sheet rules. Three years ago while concepts like these were mere sketches we had the priviledge of siting down with Ford’s chief of design J Mays. We had and interesting interview and having had dinner with him recently at an auto event I have to say the passion is still there which is great. On that note we invite you to enjoy this rare reprint from our second issue of Owners Illustrated Magazine.

his career as an exterior designer at Audi, where he was credited with designing the stylish Audi 80. Three years later, he moved to Munich Germany and joined BMW. There, he was responsible for exterior design proposals for the BMW 5 and 8 series. After his stint at BMW, Mays returned to Audi as a senior designer. In his new position, he was responsible for developing aerodynamic research vehicles for Audi Rally and Trans Am programs. He also developed full-scale model proposals for the Audi 100, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Polo and Audi Cabrio. He also designed the Audi AVUS concept car. Mays later moved back to the United States to join Volkswagen of America’s Design Center in California. There, he established a design center infrastructure that included facilities and equipment needed for the development of full-scale exterior and interior models. He was also responsible for the design and branding of the Volkswagen Concept 1, which later became the Beetle. In 2003, Mays joined the Ford family, which includes Aston Martin, Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln-Mercury, Mazda and Volvo. Prior to joining Ford, Mays had returned to Audi AG where he spent 10 years as a design director, responsible for worldwide Audi design, strategy, development and execution. OIM had an opportunity to speak with Mays at the New York Auto Show and get a sense of the vision that he has for Ford. One of our key questions was what made Mays switch from companies like BMW and Audi to Ford. “It’s a little bit like the difference in classical music and Hip Hop

ach decade, car designs and other manufacturing innovations seem to improve by leaps and bounds. Luxury car manufacturers such as BMW, Lexus and Mercedes have gone to great lengths to create stylish and luxurious vehicles for the high-end consumer. Unfortunately, the average consumer rarely benefits because most of the vehicles are priced beyond their reach. Armed with the talent and experience of J. Mays, who has designed luxury vehicles for J Mays such companies as BMW and Audi, Ford Motor Company is introducing a new level of style and luxury for the average consumer as well as the luxury enthusiasts. J. Mays is a Vice President in Ford’s Design group and he is on a mission to bring style to the masses. Born in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, Mays attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. After graduating in 1980, he traveled to Ingolstadt, Germany and began
- - one is an elitist brand and one is really accessible,” he stated. In his view, the philosophy of the more prestigious car makers is “if you got the money, we might sell you a car . . . Ford is a far more populist-oriented company,” he explained. Mays also enjoys Ford because of the variety of models he gets to work on. “The pleasure that I get out of working [at Ford] is to one minute be designing an F-150 pick-up or a Lincoln pick-up then, I get on a plane and the next morning I’m designing Aston Martin in London. So that’s a quite nice thing, to be able to change hats and change personalities,” he admitted. One of Mays’ notable projects is the Lincoln Mark LT Pick-Up for 2006, which combines the luxury and design elegance of Lincoln with the functionality of America’s best-selling truck. “We wanted to do a more highend truck with a little more bling in it.” said Mays. “The various trucks that we did for Ford weren’t quite enough spangle for us. We wanted to do something that we could add more chrome to, that we could add more overt and color palette to. That look is a lot more American . . . American design is always at its best when the volume is turned up a little bit too loudly,” explained Mays, who also admitted that automotive designers watch Hip Hop videos to get design cues. The Mark LT is part of Lincoln-Mercury’s plan to introduce 11 new products in six new segments within the next four years. Harley Davidson fans should anticipate the new F- 150 version of the Harley truck. The truck has 22 inch wheels and Mays feel that it will be a “real good” crossover for Ford. “When you think of the Harley trucks, for whatever reason, people think that white guys drive Harley trucks. I was just down in Augusta 3 months ago and there were Harley trucks everywhere in James Brown’s neighborhood,” he stated. Aviator fans can expect changes on that model as well. “People loved the interior in the [old] Aviator, but they were still a little disappointed in the exterior, being it was still a little too close to the Explorer,” confessed Mays. “We wanted to go from body on plain to uni-body, so the next generation Aviator is actually based off of the Mazda 6 architecture,” he explained. “We wanted something that felt more like a car, than it felt
like a SUV,” he said. Changes are also in store for Jaguar. “You’re going to see some stuff coming from Jaguar that pulls it out of the retro-mode that it’s been in over the last 2-3 years,” said Mays. “We want to start creating Jaguar products that are as innovative as Jaguar products that were seen in the 60’s,” he added. When asked whether a Jaguar SUV was in the works to compete with the Cayenne from Porsche, for example, Mays responded “definitely not!” He feels that Jaguar’s simplicity and elegance make it unique and there are no plans to adapt those characteristics for an SUV. Sometimes its better to leave well-enough alone. Land Rover, on the other hand, plans to battle the Cayenne head on with the new Range Stormer. This concept car, with a design influenced by Hip Hop, made its debut at the Detroit Auto Show. The Range Stormer will be a high-performance 4x4 in the mould of the Range Rover, but with more sporting and aggressive overtones, such as futuristic floating seats, scissor doors that open vertically, rear diffuser with massive tailpipes, 22 inch wheels and a 4.2 liter supercharged V8 that produces 370 horsepower. It’s the same engine that is utilized in the Jaguar XJR, XKR as well as the S-Type R. Hmmm, no Jaguar SUV, huh? We’ll see. Mustang celebrated its 40th Anniversary in April and in honor of this milestone, Ford introduced the Mustang GT-R. “The Mustang GT-R blends today’s breathtaking design, Ford Racing’s unmatched history and the most advanced racing technology into the ultimate Mustang,” says Mays. “Mustang’s iconic image grew with every checkered flag, so we think the Mustang GT-R is an appropriate tribute to the car’s 40th anniversary, and a hint at what’s to come,” he added. The Mark LT, Mustang GT-R and new designs for F-150, Aviator and Jaguar are a mere sampling of the 65 models of car and trucks that Ford has on deck for consumers over the next few years. “We (Ford) can give people a focus that no other manufacturer in the world can,” says Mays. Have you driven a Ford lately?

n icon in the automotive industry with interests as vast as wheels, design, TV, and retail, Owners Toyz was granted the privilege of a few moments with the one and only legendary Chip Foose at the New York Auto Show. He spoke about his new limited edition F-150 that he produced for Ford. Can you tell us about this new vehicle. Well, we worked under the hood first. We brought it up to 450 horsepower because it was a supertruck. It is now 500-ft lbs 46 • OwnersToyz.com

of torque. We are putting 22-inch wheels on it and we’ve also put a lowering kit on to bring the truck down two inches. We’ve actually done a ground effect. There is a front fascia bolted to the bottom of the front bumper and we constructed a new grill and put it behind the bumper and we built rockers. We’ve constructed our fascia underneath the rear and we put a bed liner in it. To top it off, we also got new headrests and carpeting. Obviously, it’s your wheels that you have with MHT? We have the Foose wheels and these may not be the produc-
racing exhaust and the bedliner. But most of all, you have the horsepower. It’s the highest-rated horsepower of any truck in this market right now. Four hundred and… …450 horsepower with 500-ft lb of torque. What gets you excited about design these days? Actually what got me excited, first of all, was that Ford approached me with doing an F-150 for them. (laughter) …And I get to put my name on it. That’s from the heart. But, what gets me excited is that I did get to lower the truck which, you know, gives the truck the right stance. We have that body kit and we have the stripe kit. In production, we’re going to bring that red stripe down a little bit and I can’t wait to see the ten different color options. We are making black, white, a silver, gray, red and a maroon truck. We will also offer two different stripe packages. One is silver with the bright red and the other will be a deep charcoal with a maroon stripe. The deep maroon will go on the bright red truck. The bright red will go on the maroon truck and then on all of the other colors you can put both, the charcoal or the silver stripe, so it’s a combination of ten different color combinations. It is going to be exciting just to see all those lined up and then I’ll take my pick.
tion wheel because I’m working on a new one. We didn’t have it completed here, but I actually want to release a new wheel for this truck. We’re also working on a badge that wasn’t done for this show. It will say Foose F-150; and then inside, we showcase floor mats with the Foose in it. We also have the Foose in the headrests, done very subtlety, in the grey on the black and then they have the red sport. We started out with the FX2 sport. So these started out from the FX2 sports? Exactly. There’s a lower fascia and then there’s also the Ford
Of course. So, what else can we expect from Foose Design? You are such a legend and have done so many things in the industry. What else can we expect? I have the Foose Coupe. We just sold one at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in West Palm Beach, Florida for [$]330,000. We sold production car number one for [$]600,000. I have the green one. What you’re going to see next is the all-aluminum GT motor in the Foose. We are only building 50 of those with Metalcrafters in Fountain Valley [California]. It’s an all autoclave carbon fiber body weighing 2280 lbs and makes 550 horsepower - and that’s a performance vehicle. It is a lot of fun…at Foose Design. We have a complete prototype, the ‘32 Ford Roadster that I’m building for the Ridler Show. [It] probably won’t be out for eighteen months and I’m doing a 1970 Cougar right now for the owner. He lives here in New York. Also, I am just finishing up my P32. It’s a ‘32 Ford Roadster. The story goes…from the late ‘40’s, a World War II fighter pilot missed his airplane and turned his roadster into something that would mimic it. And that’s a lot of fun. But most of all, it’s what’s next with Ford. We’re talking about a few projects that’ll be very exciting, but you’ll have to wait until we debut those. OwnersToyz.com • 47

Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Cristina Cheever. I’m the Vice President of Marketing & Communications for Fisker Coachbuild. We’re a new, modern day coachbuilding company that takes awesome technology and brings it up to the next level. This is the Fisker Tramonto, 2007 Fisker Tramonto. It is number 15 of 150 cars. We build our business off of exclusivity so you will only ever see a hundred and fifty in the world. It’s based off Mercedes Benz technology with a wonderful, growling V-12 Bi-turbo engine which we’ve taken up to 700 horsepower. It delivers a 1,000-lb foot of torque and the Michelins in the rear offset all of that torque and performance. It goes from 0 to 60 in under three and a half seconds and you get all the finest crafted leathers hand-stitched and built in Italy and from carbon fiber on the exterior. How did you start working with Fisker? I was heading up marketing and public relations for Aston Martin in North America for about four years. Henrik Fisker was the Chief of Design over at Aston Martin and had designed the DB9 and the V8 Vantage. We worked together on launching everything and he wanted me to come over and help him start this business. It’s been a very exciting endeavor. Wow, so tell us a little about Fisker. He came from Aston Martin and everybody is aware of his world-renowned work at Aston Martin. The DB9 is a totally gorgeous vehicle. So, give us an idea as to what Fisker is all about. Sure. Henrik Fisker, the name behind Fisker Coachbuild is Henrik Fisker along with his partner Bernhardt Koehler. The two of them met several years ago working at BMW and up the ranks towards Aston Martin and Ford Motor company. Now Henrik has designed some amazing pieces of art, timeless beauties for the road such as the Z8 for BMW, the DB9, and the V8 Vantage from Aston Martin. He decided that he wanted to do something a little bit different and his partner Bernhardt has really helped him to do that. The two of them founded this company two years ago. We’re supported by a group of international investors and we do really exciting exclusive products and this is only the beginning. Our second product comes out in about three months. It Fisker Tramonto is called the Latigo CS. It is built on the M6 for BMW and again will get 650-plus horsepower. Wow, so this is interesting. Explain to our readers what a coachbuilder does and what that is. Coachbuilding was a very popular art form in the 1930’s and ‘40’s. It is where someone would go and buy a chassis from a manufacturer and then they would take it to a custom designer to create something very distinctive and unique for themselves. So, what we do is we’ve modernized the approach. We’ve streamlined it to where we choose the technology and we couple that with our amazing design. We do
this all by hand in Italy. We buy carbon fiber from many other companies that use carbon fiber in the auto industry as well. But the coachbuilding is really on top of existing, sound, proven, tested technology and it really does set us apart and make us offer something that’s so unique to the end user. We have something for all the end users because our price ranges vary from [$]185,000 all the way up to this one which is $369,000. What is the future goal for Fisker? The future goal for Fisker is to introduce a new car every year based on the coachbuilding aspect of the business. Also, design services are becoming increasingly more important to our business. We’re providing design to other automotive companies out there in the industry. We just introduced a car called the Artega GT at the Geneva show. But, longterm, we really want to build our own sports car. So, we’ll get the fan base; we’ll get the customers who want our product; make sure we have a good, sound standing behind us and then build our own sports car. Nice. Let me ask you this, as a woman in the automotive industry what advice do you have for other women who are trying to get into a position like yours? How do you get in that high-end sector? Sure, well let me tell you, being a female in the auto industry is very challenging. However, the best word of advice is to never be intimidated and always be yourself; always stand for what you believe in and make sure you fight for what you believe in. People basically hire you because you have a mind to do what they need you to do. I mean, hire a man, hire a woman; but, being a woman, it is challenging especially when you get the funny comments at the auto shows. But, we know a lot about our cars and when you’re passionate about something, it shows in your work. I feel that aspect is what has helped me excel in the auto industry. How did you actually get a start in the auto industry? I was an intern while in college with Jaguar Cars North America in Mahwah, New Jersey and it was in the finance… What college? Ramapo College of New Jersey, a small school up in northern Jersey. I got my start as an intern. I was infused with the whole green blood thing going on and little by little, I guess, I went after what I wanted. I was hired at Aston Martin about six years ago in California and then two years ago I branched out to really have a chance to make a difference. We’ve started something from scratch here; a clean sheet of paper with Fisker Coachbuild. So, it’s been the most exciting challenge yet.

f you want something, you have to work hard for it. Respect is earned and not given… These adages prove true when referring to Cristina Cheever with Fisker Coachbuild. Having gotten her start at Jaguar and moving on to Aston Martin, she now has a challenge as VP of Marketing and Communications for the exclusive Coachbuilding Company. We were fortunate to get a few moments with her at an auto show. She introduced us to Fisker Coachbuild and their new car named the Fisker Tramonto.

As changes have totally transformed Chrysler we can’t help but to remember a short history two years ago to be exact when a young designer turned the industry on its ears and wowed Journalist around the globe with his work on the LX platform. Now Daimler and Chrysler have spilt and the Magnum is no more in its memory we are reprinting an exclusive interview we ran in Owners Illustrated Magazine.
"
y now, everyone has seen the all new Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Magnum. And there is no denying they have radically changed the views on American automotive design. Everyone from multi-millionaire athletes and entertainers like 50 Cent have owned these vehicles. The question, however, is how did these vehicles come about? OIM demystifies the 300, the Magnum, and the new Charger, by talking one-on-one with the designer who set it all in motion. Ralph Giles, a Canadian native, has been working with DaimlerChrysler for 13 years. Had had a lot to share on these cars and the overall process of automotive design to manufacture. If you are like myself who had dreams of designing cars someday, or you like to customize vehicles, there are some interesting things Ralph spoke to us about. Here is our exclusive interview. So, how did you get started? Well, it’s, pretty simple. There’s about four design schools in the country. I went to the one that happens to be in Detroit, called, College of Art and Design in downtown Detroit. To get into that school you actually have to have some inclination already or you have to be an artist of sorts. I was always into sketching cars since I was a young man…literally. I never knew at the time that it was such a career as car designing.…I always thought it was more of an engineering degree, but it’s a much more artistic career than I thought. So it’s kinda cool because I don’t do too much math everyday. There’s a lot of industrial design schools, but there’s only a really, really limited amount of automotive design schools. And those are more like vocational schools, where you’re pretty much – I mean they are credit colleges, but the minute you’re in, you’re in car design. It’s very concentrated. So how long have you been with Chrysler? Since 1992, so approximately 13 years now. 50 • OwnersToyz.com
So, what was the first car you were involved with? The first car I was involved with was a concept car, actually a few concepts, called the Dodge Intrepid ESX. It was a hybrid electric. It was actually a precursor to the last generation of Intrepids. So it was kind of a fun project. I did mostly interiors at that time. So when was the decision made, design wise, to try to combine, I guess the LHS, the Intrepid, 300M, and Concorde, to all be under the 300 design? Well, we don’t think that way, actually. We don’t combine ideas. We like to call it more heritage. We have our own heritage that comes from 50 years ago and obviously every time you make a car, it’s part of history. Some people want to try to tie it in. You know, we don’t really mix it all together. That’s a misconception I think got out there. But the decision was made to do this kind of car several years ago. If you’ve been paying attention to our concept cars, you can do some research, you can find that we’ve been doing kind of premium Chrysler concepts for the last ten years or so. The one which is probably closest to the 300, was called the Chrysler Chronos. So there’s a lot of rich heritage. Our company was striving to move the brand forward and upwards. So these concept cars were a way of exercising this you know, trying to find a formula. The 300 borrows a little bit from the Chronos in terms of the front end, there’s some of that magic there. But that’s where the inspiration comes from. Actually when I look at the 300 design, I can also see a lot of the heritage of the original 300. Matter fact, when that car was being clayed up, in the very, very beginning, we had a 300, a C300, a 1955 C300 in the studio, just for inspiration. I mean, to remind everyone that we were trying to create something really special here. Not necessarily to aid anything, just to kind of get the mood in the right way.
Of course. So what was the inspiration behind the design? Well, there’s nothing less than a few things going on. First of all, we wanted to create what we call a noble proportion. We wanted the car to be, not a typical sleek sedan. We wanted to get back up to, first of all, getting the car to feel more upright. Basically we lifted the passengers about 2 inches. So they sit a little more proudly in the car, they see down the road better. And people are used to that now; they drive a lot of SUVs, a lot of trucks. So, it’s not imperative for them to go back to a low-slung car. We wanted to create something a little different. And that drove a different aesthetic. It drove a totally different look to the car. We tried doing the sleek looks over the package. And it just didn’t look good. We started to look at more upright looks – and when I say “upright” I mean the grille stood up, the windshield’s more vertical. That kind of silhouette worked much better with this new package that we’re gonna do. Not to mention the HEMI. We knew from day one we were gonna put the “HEMI” in the car, and that’s a good-sized engine. It requires quite a good-sized front end to carry that engine. So then also… You need a longer hood. Exactly. So that dictated a certain look. Then once we got going, we realized we have something that looks rather classic. You know, we have a very classic proportion, which resonated extremely well with people, when we went to early research. So, was there any inspiration from the Bentley? Not really. We never had a Bentley in our studio and said, “let’s look at that,” you know what I mean. What the irony is, when you come up with the proportions, I mean if you look at a Bentley frontally, it carries five people, it has a big V8 engine, the people sit up right. So all of a sudden, yeah, you have a similar overall silhouette. But I dare you if you put the cars next to each other, there’s nothing in common. Absolutely nothing. But it was one of the problems when we did the research and people said the same thing. The Bentley is easily a 20% bigger car than ours in every measure. It’s much longer, much taller, much bigger. I mean, it’s just the presence. I think that’s a beautiful compliment because I think the 300 definitely has presence, and presence is what a Bentley has, that’s what a Rolls-Royce has. When you see one of those rolling down the road, you’re like “Oh my gosh, there’s somebody important in that car,” you know what I mean? And the 300, at a wonderful price point, has that same respect. And that’s the magic of the car. For $25 to $30,000 you can feel like royalty. Are you guys designing a convertible for the 300? I cannot talk about future products. We get asked that a lot, but we are always cooking up stuff.
showroom floor already looking somewhat tricked out, you know what I mean? So there’s a little bit of that spark already, just in the nature of the car. And when we did the 300 we knew we’re gonna come out with 20” wheels, we have them now on the SRT, going into production in a few months. So we had to kind of leave that room in there. And then, the minute you do the wheels, you’re just like “uh oh,” we left them enough room to do that.(add wheels) I talked to Myles, owner of Dub Magazine. That’s the one thing that started the whole craze. We realized, this is one of the only cars – the only other car you can put 20s and 22s on is the BMW 7 series. There’s no other passenger car that can fit wheels that big. So it’s like, he said “this car is gonna blow up”. And he was right…it did. So, again, I think it’s that we’re more like-minded. We enjoy, and love cars so much that it just comes out in the product. People that love cars gravitate to cars like that. So, it’s a cool relationship. I know that it does have some components from the E-Class. How much of that is that… Yeah, and again, that’s another huge misconception about the car. That’s great that you would think it shares with the E-Class, but the EClass is a whole different size. We have a much longer wheel base, a different track. There’s only, the transmission, and the steering column I would say are verbatim pieces from the E-Class. And actually those are made in America. We want to re-develop because it’s good, you know what I mean? The rest of the car is more of the philosophy. Mercedes has 30-40 years of rear driving experience. And they’ve consulted us and helped us develop the best rear drive we could, but there’s no parts that are shared. It’s just the philosophies are the same, you know? Our parts have to be different dimensions, different materials, because we have a bigger wheel and tire than they do. Different vehicle weights, different power components. It’s more of using the experience of Mercedes and making sure we get it right the first time than using actual parts. OK, that’s really interesting right there, because, it’s like having the best engineers consult and then to be able to offer these great technologies to people in an affordable way. Precisely. And that’s really what merging is all about. That’s what we’re supposed to be doing as a global company. That is what Daimler Chrysler’s advantage is over any other manufacturer. Our engineers, some fly over to Germany and others fly from Germany to the US. And we’re constantly trading ideas, because it’s some things they’re good at, and some things we’re good at. So merging turns out to be a great thing. Going from there to the Magnum. Which, I guess is the same L… what’s the platform? LX Platform.
How much, do you think, does the urban after market culture influence what you’re doing? Well, I like to put it this way: I’ve been asked that question a few times. But I’ve been thinking about this for a few months and I think what happens is we at Chrysler, we’re such enthusiasts ourselves. You know, we’re car enthusiasts, too, just like everybody else. And we think we have a likemindedness to those guys. And I myself, you know every time I get a car, I put wheels on it. Every time—I like to customize a car. And at Chrysler, I would argue that our cars leave the

Of course. There was a convertible at the [NAIAS 2005] show, however. Yes, there was a four-door convertible done by an outside company, called America’s Specialty Cars. They did a wonderful job. We’re very, very happy they did that. We think it’s a compliment to our vehicle. But, we have no association to that project.

the philosophy? Well, actually, the Charger’s not necessarily about doors. And I guess we expected a little bit of angst when we showed the car with 4 doors. And I think as time goes on people will get it. We already have some special things worked up for the car that you’ll see very shortly that will underscore the car’s attitude. I have nothing but positive thoughts about this car. I think it’s gonna blow up just as well as the others. Again, it’s all about the attitude. It’s what I would call a 4 door coup. It’s got a very rakish roof, it’s got a very rakish body/side, absolutely menacing front end – A very athletic body. You have to see it in person, just like the 300; you gotta be on the highway and see these things driving by you, and then people will be like “Ok, I got it now.” So, I’m pretty confident about that car.

LX Platform? I mean, one thing about the Magnum it’s like totally revolutionized the station wagon. I mean, it’s like now wagons are cool. You know, I remember talking about this car, and that car’s really special to me. Because honestly it was a little bit of a struggle. The American station wagon has really been a forgettable thing, you know what I mean? So for us, you know I remember being in a meeting, and talking to my guys and saying, “trust me on this one because we’re gonna do this one with love. We’re gonna really love this thing. And make it cool.” You know… granted, it has 71 cubic feet of space; it’s not the biggest wagon in the world. And that was never the point. The point was we wanted it to be the coolest wagon in the world, and I think we did that. What was the inspiration and what was some of the design philosophy behind that? Well, again the design philosophy was to have something that was more steady. Ok, the typical wagon formula is almost like a shrunken down SUV, like a box basically. And we wanted to make the car have some drama. The wagon in our mind was really an alternative to a sedan. A lot of people in our situation, a lot of young men in my studio that are just having young families, they kind of need a car that does everything. They like the handling of a sports car, they like the space of an SUV. They like, you know, the functionality of putting the seats down to carry big stuff once in and go to Home Depot or whatever. So, this car is really a result of, “hey, what would you do if you had a clean sheet of paper and you needed something that had all these attributes?” And a wagon was like the perfect formula. So, it combined functionality and style like no other. That was really what we wanted to do. And we love it! Have you seen the brand new SRT-8 Magnum that was shown?
I guess traditionally, the Charger has always been a 2-door. I guess a lot of people remember it from The Dukes of Hazzard. So what’s 52 • OwnersToyz.com
So what is your exact role? Like in your job description? I call it director. It’s actually a very accurate title. It’s very much like a movie director. Actually, I don’t sketch anymore because I’m in management. I coordinate the events, I pick the sketches, I help manage the execution, I deal with engineering, deal with marketing, and deal with public relations. Kind of like the hub for a vehicle. I manage all the requests from engineering and make sure it doesn’t compromise the design. If I need to fight for something, I go to bat for it, whatever… because I’m really directing the execution and the creation of a vehicle. But I have a great team of designers and a great team of engineers. So I’m part of a vertical team of easily 3000 people. So think of it that way. No one person puts a car together. So what advice can you give to young, aspiring designers? Honestly, my advice to them is first of all there’s no such thing as barriers. I thought there would be when I first started this business, but there really aren’t. If anything, your color makes you that much more noticeable. It can be an advantage in some way, because it’s missing. There really isn’t enough color in the industry, and I think that should happen. But it starts at the school level – people getting into the industry in the first place. Anything is possible, especially in this country. You just gotta want it. There’s financial aid, there’s all kinds of mechanisms to go around the financial issues that’s in the way. It’s really about dreaming and going for it!

I was actually gonna ask you about that because I love the wheel package. Oh, yeah, that came out of our studio. It came from an enthusiastic bunch of guys saying, “why not?” You know, no one’s ever done that – only the Germans have done that, and again, that’s at twice the price of us. So we’re offering a very athletic family vehicle. It’s a really cool combination.
Will there probably be an SRT? Perhaps, perhaps.

n what is a landmark agreement, Microsoft and Ford Motor Company have entered into an agreement to provide Microsoft’s Automotive technology exclusive in (12) 2008 models of Ford Lincoln and Mercury. SYNC is the ultimate driving companion operating MP3 and phone devices through voice commands and steering wheel controls. IPod’s and Zune players are both compatible with this technology as are many others (the software is upgradeable to technology not currently available on the market). I had the pleasure of a personal demonstration in Las Vegas during CES and was able to tell the car to play Beyonce with the technology responding and playing the song. With SYNC you can also specify song. MP3 players are connected through a USB 2.0 port, but phones operate via Bluetooth and I was able to give voice commands to make calls. This technology also adds safety to the driving experience as you no longer have to fidget with your devices while driving. In fact, it can even reply to emails though not with detailed messages yet. The SYNC is not going to be for only high premium vehicles. The 2008 Ford Focus will feature the SYNC along with the Fusion, Five Hundred, Edge, Freestyle, Explorer and Sport Trac. Mercury’s Milan, Montego and Mountaineer; and Lincoln MKX and MKZ will also feature SYNC. Thus the technology will be on all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles in the near future. A full listing of the SYNC features includes: •
Voice-activated, hands-free calling: Simply press the “Push to Talk” button on the steering wheel, and then say the name of the person you wish to call. SYNC will automatically connect with the names in the mobile phone’s contact list.
•
Uninterrupted connections: No need to hang up in the middle of a cell phone call as you enter your vehicle, simply touch the Telephone Button on the steering wheel, and SYNC will instantly connect to a Bluetooth phone.
•
Advanced calling features: SYNC includes the same features offered on mobile phones, including caller ID, call waiting, conference calling, a caller log, a list of contacts, a signal strength icon, and a phone battery charge icon – all conveniently located on the radio’s display screen.
•
Voice-activated music: Browse the music collection on your digital media player, mobile phone or USB drive by genre, album, artist and song title using simple voice commands, such as “Play genre Rock,” “Play” or “Play Track.”
•
Instant voice recognition: SYNC’s advanced voice recognition technology means when you’re ready to use your phone or digital music player, just speak simple voice commands.
•
Ring tone support: For supported phones, SYNC will play personal ring tones. If you’ve configured unique ring tones to identify specific callers, SYNC will automatically play those, too.
•
Automatic phonebook transfer: SYNC will automatically and wirelessly transfer all the names and numbers in a mobile phonebook.

Multilingual intelligence: SYNC is fluent in English, French and Spanish. For more information visit www.syncmyride.com, www.microsoft.com, www.ford.com 54 • OwnersToyz.com

y now, the world over has been introduced to the Transformers. This blockbuster film grossed over $700 million at box offices worldwide and DVD sales have topped all others since its release. Yet, this success started humbly with a plan to bring to life these robots that were so instrumental in so many peoples childhood. Beyond the Autobots and Decepticons and their respective leaders Optimus Prime and Megatron is a series to toys from Japan made prior to 1984. Named Transformers by toymaker Hasbro, they would be marketed to US audiences via a four-part comic book by Marvel and an animated series tagged, “More than meets the Eye,” or for true fans, Gen 1. The animated series of these Robots who came to earth in search of Energon to save their home planet Cybertron was captivating and moving. So much so, the story led to an animated movie in 1986 with the death of Optimus Prime shocking fans worldwide. Initially, a plan to introduce a new truck line titled “Ultra Magnus,” the marketing of these robots struck a cord so deep in the childhood of American children that they became more than just toy trucks, they became heroes and eventually Optimus came back to the animated series and Cybertron lives happily ever after.

TRANSFORMERS
Director Michael Bay (center), and actors Shia LaBeouf (left) and Josh Duhamel on the set. So engaging was the Transformer story line it remained in the hearts and minds of fans and the 20th Anniversary release of the animated movie on DVD was highly successful. Making a live action film, however, proved a different challenge but several high ranking executives and producers had been mulling the idea for quite some time. Steven Spielberg is the largest; but, others like Michael Bay, Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Shooter), Ian Bryce (Saving Private Ryan), Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto of The X-Men Series would eventually unite to make a dream team with Hasbro and bring these toys to life once again. All have claimed they wanted to make the movie since their childhood but it was a conversation between Lorenzo and Hasbro COO Brian Goldner that spurred movement. Don Murphy approached partner Tom De Santo about making the movie after walking through a Comic-Con convention in San Diego. According to Don, “I was walking around looking at a lot of properties and franchises and all of a sudden it hit me. The kids of the 80’s have grown up and now they probably want to see movies based on all this stuff around me, all their beloved characters and stories. Oh my God! This makes perfect sense!” But, just a great idea does not a movie make and DeSanto who is an avid comic book fan with over 35,000 in his own collection knew this wouldn’t be an easy task. “It is hard to get these movies made, so you better love what you do because otherwise you are in for a few dreary years trying to make the idea a reality,”
58 • OwnersToyz.com
Pontiac Solstice he said. However, Don Murphy had a previous relationship with Hasbro so there was a pipeline. But, the biggest boost was Steven Spielberg’s excitement over the idea. “I’ve been one of the biggest fans of Transformers since they first came out… I’m not talking about buying the toys for my kids; I’m talking about reading the comic books and buying the toys for myself. I always thought the Hasbro line would one day ‘transform’ into a big summer movie,” says Spielberg. As a longtime science fiction aficionado having been inducted into its Hall of Fame, Steven Spielberg would be the perfect executive producer and his Dreamworks Pictures would pair with Paramount to make the live action film. Obviously, there is more to the story, like finding writer John Rodgers or casting Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Jon Voight, etc. However, besides that, the greatest aspect is the partnership with the Air Force and GM to update these robots. The 2009 Camaro which became Bumble Bee has become a fan favorite and you can see I am one too. GM also introduced the all-new Top Kick, the Solstice, and a Hummer via this movie, giving it a modern American feel. You can view videos of the new Camaro at www.ownerstoyz.com and they even have plans to make a convertible too. Conversely, make sure to get a copy of the Transformers DVD and also the 20th Anniversary edition of the animated movie. You can catch more information on new toys at www.hasbro.com, www. trasformersthemovie.com.

SPEED KILLS
T
he fourth installment of Project Gotham Racing is by far the greatest in the already highly successful franchise. While at Vegas for this past SEMA show, I happened to venture towards the Michelin booth where they had a simulator running a demo of the game. Michelin sponsors one of the trial tracks in the game and from all looks of it, this is the most realistic one by far. I have heard of accounts of real Formula One racers spending hours at the simulator racing against each other and getting times close to their actual times in a real competition. Now, obviously, we all can’t have a simulator in our homes, but Microsoft is coming out with the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel. This wheel is meant to increase the gaming experience and gives life-like reactions and controls. I haven’t had a chance to play yet so I can’t personally vouch. Hopefully my good friends over there will get me set up and then I’ll have the opportunity to update you online along with providing some video footage. What is totally new, however, is the inclusion of motorcycles which now provides a new excitement to the game. Makers from Ducatti to BMW have provided licenses in addition to Honda so now you can race Lambo’s in your Ducatti 900. Doing tricks also enhances your profile and will make you a favorite among fans. Speaking of Lambo’s, I grew up dreaming of a Countach and had a red one posted on my wall. A little fun fact to know is now you can play with the Countach and other classic wheels including the Corvette Sting Ray and the 1993 Toyota Supra. As always, the most fun is had on X Box Live because you are able to race against gamers worldwide and truly measure your wheels skills. Out this holiday, you can always visit www.xbox.com for more information. 68 • OwnersToyz.com
